California DREAM Loan Program
The California DREAM Loan Program, funded by the state and University of California, aims to provide qualified undergraduates with the option to borrow loans to help cover the expense of attending UC.
How it works
A loan is borrowed money that you have to pay back with interest.
Each UC campus will determine the amount a student can borrow based on available funding and number of qualified students. The maximum amount of a loan is capped at $4,000 each year, per student.
You can borrow every year if you are a qualified student at UC or until you receive a maximum of $20,000 in DREAM loans.
What you need to do
Make sure you apply for financial aid by filing a California Dream Act application. There are no separate forms required to apply for the California DREAM Loan Program, but you’ll need to apply for financial aid every year to be considered for the DREAM Loan Program.
You may see a DREAM Loan offered as part of your financial aid award letter. You do not need to accept the loan if you don’t want to—it’s not necessary.
If you’re interested in borrowing from the California DREAM Loan Program, but don’t see an offer in your financial aid award letter, reach out to the campus financial aid office.
Make sure to check your email and your campus student website on a regular basis in case the financial aid office contacts you.
21.How much can a student borrow at most through the program each year
A.$2,000. B.$4,000. C.$10,000. D.$20,000.
22.What should the students do to get the loan
A.File an annual application.
B.Fill in separate application forms.
C.Ask for a financial aid award letter.
D.Contact the financial aid office regularly.
23.Where is the text probably taken from
A.A tourist brochure. B.A scientific journal.
C.A university website. D.A government report.
Driving home from work, Will spotted a For Sale sign on the last remaining farm in the city of Milwaukee. An idea flashed through Will’s head. He could grow food here.
Most people in the neighborhood were not eating well. “Folks were living in what I call a food desert,” Will says, “I knew I had to do something, because you can’t have a healthy community without healthy food.”
Will hired some neighborhood teenagers to help him get started. They “grew” new soil by composting, which means collecting food waste and piling it up until it breaks down and turns into soil. Then they made good natural fertilizer (肥料) before starting growing food. Today, Growing Power Community Food Center is growing enough food to feed people in the neighborhood. In the winter, the compost gives off enough heat to keep the greenhouses warm as it breaks down into soil. Goats, chickens, and turkeys live behind the greenhouses. Red-eyed fish are swimming in aquariums (水族箱) at the center of the greenhouses. The fish are for eating, but they also help the plants grow. The water they swim in, enriched by the fish droppings, is channeled toward the pots containing vegetables. Then it is cleaned by other plants, and returned to the fish tank as pure water. “We don’t waste anything here,” Will says.
“The city farm of the future is a multi-storied building, angled toward the sun. This idea, called ‘vertical (垂直的) farming’, is a new way to feed more people. You grow fish on the bottom floor and pump the water up to the top. Then the water is piped down from floor to floor, through beds of growing plants, ranging from leafy greens up high to mushrooms lower down. By the time the water returns to the fish on the bottom floor, it’s clean again.” Will says, “Growing food is powerful and it can change the world!”
24.Why did Will decide to grow food in Milwaukee
A.To enable people to eat better.
B.To make some profits by farming.
C.To build a harmonious community.
D.To transform the desert into a farm.
25.What do we know about Will’s food centre
A.It works like a forest and wastes nothing.
B.It is a greenhouse and provides heat in winter.
C.It is a city farm and employs chemical fertilizers.
D.It collects conventional soil and uses animal waste.
26.Which of the following can best describe Will
A.Thoughtful and faithful. B.Adventurous and generous.
C.Creative and ambitious. D.Humorous and farsighted.
27.What is Will talking about in the last paragraph
A.The procedure of water cleaning.
B.The influence of vertical farming.
C.The vision for future city farming.
D.The description of a future building.
There’s a beautiful song by the Indigo Girls released in 1989 called Closer to Fine. The song is about how our thirst for certainty in this world can, surprisingly, mislead us.
We seek rock-solid answers to life’s big questions (e.g. What is the purpose of life What's the right career path for me ) because we think this will allow us to achieve happiness and contentment. For most of us, though, the belief that there are definitive answers to life’s many hard questions can lead to greater levels of dissatisfaction, anxiety, and unhappiness.
We all have the evolutionary (进化的) need to survive, but this world presents us with countless challenges to our survival. As civilization has grown more complex, the existential threats to our well-being have increased dramatically. Due to what is called evolutionary mismatch, we face lots of threats and challenges which are foreign to us from an evolutionary standpoint. Such threats include global climate change, racial inequality, dealing with trolls on social media, and so on. For our ancient brains, dealing with so many complex uncertainties creates existential anxiety. We simply did not evolve (进化) to live in the world in which we now live. Thus, we are unconsciously drawn to find certainty, in the hope of making life more predictable, controllable, and, perhaps most importantly, safe.
However, the nature of the universe is change. We are a part of this universe and so we are change as well. This is the “being” part of us as human beings. Much unnecessary suffering comes from living in disharmony with the universe, which includes trying to impose (强加) certainty, and predictability upon an ever-changing world. In order to become “closer to fine”, we need to learn to accept and embrace uncertainty through being more flexible so that we are living in greater harmony with the universe. As martial artist Bruce Lee advocated, we use “no way as way”.
28.What does the underlined word “definitive” mean in the second paragraph
A.Reasonable. B.Certain. C.Positive. D.Detailed.
29.What does the evolutionary mismatch in paragraph 3 refer to
A.The evolutionary needs and our existential anxiety.
B.The increasing challenges and modern civilizations.
C.Our desire to survive and our desire to find certainty.
D.Our ancient brains and countless complex uncertainties.
30.What did Bruce Lee advocate
A.Be flexible. B.Be predictable.
C.Change the universe. D.Accept suffering.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.Find Certainty in an Uncertain World B.Embrace Uncertainty to Be Closer to Fine
C.How to Deal with Anxiety in Modern Life D.How to Satisfy Evolutionary Needs to Survive
A new NASA-led study has found that how rain falls in a given year is nearly as important to the world’s vegetation (植物) as how much. Reporting on Dec.11 in Nature, the researchers showed that even in years with similar rainfall totals, plants grew differently when that water came in fewer, bigger bursts.
Scientists have previously estimated that almost half of the world’s vegetation is driven primarily by how much rain falls in a year. Less well understood is the role of day-to-day variability, said lead author Andrew Feldman, an ecosystem scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
The team analyzed two decades of field and satellite observations spanning diverse lands cap es from Siberia to the southern tip of Patagonia. They found that plants across 42% of Earth’s vegetated land surface were sensitive to daily rainfall variability. Of those, a little over half grew better in years with fewer but more intense wet days. These include drier landscapes like grasslands, croplands and deserts. In contrast, broadleaf forests and rainforests in lower and middle latitudes (纬 度) tended to grew worse under those conditions, possibly because they could not tolerate the longer dry periods. Statistically, daily rainfall variability was nearly as important as annual rainfall totals in driving growth worldwide.
The new study relied primarily on a suite of NASA missions and datasets, which provides rai n and snowfall rates for most of the planet every 30 minutes using a network of international satellites. To measure plant response day to day, the researchers calculated how green an area appeared in satellite imagery. “Greenness” is commonly used to estimate vegetation density and health. They also tracked a faint reddish light that plants give off during photosynthesis (光合作用), when a plant absorbs sunlight to transform carbon dioxide and water into food. This faint light is an obvious sign of flourishing vegetation.
Feldman said the findings highlight the vital role that plants play in moving carbon around Earth — a process called the carbon cycle. “A finer understanding of how plants thrive or decline day to day, storm by storm, could help us better understand their role in that critical cycle,” Feld man said.
32.What is the main focus of the NASA-led study in the article
A.The global distribution of rainfall in a given year.
B.The role of satellites in monitoring rainfall and vegetation.
C.The impact of daily rainfall variability on vegetation growth.
D.The relationship between rainfall totals and vegetation growth.
33.What is the relationship between rainfall variability and plant growth
A.All types of vegetation respond similarly to rainfall patterns.
B.Lower latitudes rainforests grew better after longer dry periods.
C.Drier landscapes benefit from fewer but more intense rain events.
D.Rainfall variability shows a relatively weaker influence on plant growth.
34.Which method did researchers use to measure plant responses to rainfall variability
A.Conducting field experiments in specific locations.
B.Monitoring rainfall totals using a network of satellites.
C.Measuring the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by plants.
D.Analyzing satellite imagery for vegetation density and health.
35.What is Feldman’s attitude toward the findings of this study
A.Cautious. B.Positive. C.Skeptical. D.Neutral.
The Power of Peers
Do birds of a feather really flock together People do tend to choose friends who are similar to them. Many behaviors spread socially. Activities in certain brain areas change when other people are around. 36 You can use the power of social relationships to gain healthier habits — and motivate others to do the same.
37 Teens are especially responsive to peer influence. At the same time, the reward system in the teen brain becomes extra sensitive. Teens are just learning to explore the social world. Understanding other people’s values and being influenced by them are important parts of socializing.
A research shows that even just having another peer around can change the reward response in the brain and also the risk-taking tendencies of teenagers. Some people seem to be more easily influenced than others and more sensitive to feeling included or excluded by others. 38 But it’s also a time that peer influence can help teens thrive if it gets them more involved with their community or helps them learn behaviors to get along with others.
It’s the quality of friendships — not quantity — that really makes the difference. Friendships you feel you want to let go of may be low quality. 39 High quality friendships provide understanding, support, and recognition of your self-worth. These types of friendships are more steady and satisfying.
Spending time with friends can be especially helpful for people. Noticing that our behavior is influenced by other people, we can be intentional and try to focus on the people who are doing the things we want to get into ourselves. 40
A.Adolescence is such a risky period.
B.That can affect what you choose to do.
C.Peer pressure can sometimes lead to competition.
D.People care about what others think across all different age groups.
E.They are linked to poor academic performance and behavioral issues.
F.Sharing your healthy habits could also make a real difference to others.
G.The number of friends you have determines your level of social influence.

I was confident at the audition (试演) for the school play and felt pleased to get a role. It just felt good to be in the play, even if I had only four or five lines. I worked hard at perfecting those lines. I repeated them over and over again. I put in the emphases and intonations (语调) that my drama teacher had suggested and, because I was on stage much longer than for just four or five lines, I had many actions to rehearse (排练) and perform. “Do them in front of a mirror,” my drama teacher had advised me. “Watch how you look; practice and rehearse as often as you can.” I did just that. I worked and worked at it. It was fun and exciting rehearsing.
Then finally the big night came. Suddenly, things felt different. The theater was full of people. As I dressed, I could hear the chatting and noises of the audience. I looked around at the other more experienced actors and saw that their previous confidence seemed to have disappeared. Had they got their makeup right Was the costume done up correctly What if they forgot their lines The more people talked about their anxiety, the more nervous everyone became. The worries spread from person to another—like a baton (接力棒) being passed in a relay race—until the whole of the backstage area seemed to be full of tension and worry.
I was on stage early, at first performing my non-spoken role in the background with several other guys around the same age. When, suddenly, I heard my cue (出场提示), the lights were bright in my eyes, I couldn’t see the audience but knew there were hundreds of people out there all watching me. The words that had flowed so easily when I stood in front of a mirror didn’t want to come, and when they did I found myself hurrying into them. I tried to slow down my thoughts and my words.

81. A Campus Environmental Protection Week
Last week, “Campus Environmental Protection Week” was held at our school. A variety of engaging activities were organized. There were informative lectures on environmental protection delivered by experts, where students learned about the importance of reducing waste, conserving energy, and protecting wildlife. Waste sorting competitions were also held, with students competing to see who could sort waste materials correctly and quickly
This event has not only enhanced our awareness of environmental protection but also inspired us to take practical actions in our daily lives. It is our responsibility to protect the environment and make the world a better place.

She offered words of encouragement and praised my resilience under pressure. Reflecting on the night’s events, I realized that even amidst the chaos and uncertainty, I had persevered and delivered a memorable performance. With newfound confidence, I eagerly awaited the next opportunity to step into the spotlight.
