Unit 6 At one with nature
Ⅰ.阅读理解(每题2.5分,共20分)
A
People today are not unfamiliar with terms such as “going eco-friendly” and “sustainable lifestyle”.However, there exists a group of sceptics (怀疑论者) who believe that going eco-friendly is merely a fad (一时的风尚).I disagree with this viewpoint.Going eco-friendly is not merely a fad and it does,in fact, change the beliefs and attitudes of people.
The long-term presence of environmental organisations shows the efforts that people have made towards going eco-friendly.Organisations such as World Wide Fund For Nature advocate people to go eco-friendly.The high involvement of the organisations and the participants is thus a strong indicator that going eco-friendly is not merely a fad but a trend that can last decades.
Another strong indicator is the emergence of sustainable products in many industries, such as organic produce and electric vehicles. The consumer demand, coupled with eco-conscious (有环保意识的)businesses,is behind the sharp increase in such products. This shows a shift in the beliefs and attitudes of people towards adopting a sustainable lifestyle. Thus,it seems quite certain that going eco-friendly is not merely a fad.
While some people who broadcast their eco-friendly practices are criticised for just hoping to project an eco-conscious image, there are a number of people who have been practising the zero-waste lifestyle for years. For those who have done so for years, and not mere days or months,it is indeed a commitment that can only come with a true change in beliefs and attitudes towards caring for the earth.
The call to save the earth looks set to stay. With the development of technology and the appearance of many platforms advocating going green, people are more willing to change their beliefs and attitudes when they can learn about and appreciate the positive impact of the work of different environmental organisations and individuals. It is hoped that these effects will go a long way in ensuring that our planet will remain a suitable place to live in.
( )1.Why does the author mention World Wide Fund For Nature
[A] To appreciate its environmental efforts.
[B] To encourage people to go eco-friendly.
[C] To evidence the universal recognition of going green.
[D] To highlight the difficulty in changing people’s attitudes.
( )2.What does the underlined word “emergence” mean in Paragraph 3
[A] Sudden disappearance.
[B] Sharp increase.
[C] Gradual development.
[D] Limited application.
( )3.What does the author expect of technology development
[A] It may discourage people from a sustainable lifestyle.
[B] It may boost the business of organic produce.
[C] It will be used to project an eco-conscious image.
[D] It will promote environmental awareness.
( )4.What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
[A] To prove going eco-friendly a lasting trend.
[B] To popularise the eco-friendly products.
[C] To offer strategies to go eco-friendly.
[D] To advertise for eco-friendly platforms.
B
I used to want to be a zookeeper, but after becoming a wildlife rescue worker,I found that this work is even more valuable than I thought. Not only can I help injured wild animals, but I can also facilitate their return to the wild.We make every effort to accomplish this goal:Hiding food under rocks and fallen leaves to simulate (模拟) a natural environment,or doing our best to maintain some distance from the animals and prevent them from bonding with humans.
I am often asked whether I feel sad when it’s time to release the animals — to tell you the truth,I’m always pretty willing to let them go.All of my efforts have been towards allowing them to return to the wild, and the wild is where they belong,so there’s no reason for reluctance on my part. But it is true that sometimes there is no way for an animal to go back to the wild,or to keep it from bonding with humans.
Last year,I rescued a light-vented bulbul (白头鹎).The bird,initially lacking feathers,
recovered under our care.It was scheduled for release during its adolescent period, during which it’s relatively easy to socialise. But an injury to its flight feathers delayed its return to the wild. The bird imprinted on humans during the following two months, which was a critical cognitive (认知的) development period, leading it to return to us after being released.
When we engage in wildlife rescue,we have to teach animals how to maintain a high degree of caution around humans. If they become too trusting of humans,it is very likely that our success in releasing them will not depend solely on the animals or our work here, but rather on the attitude of humans towards them.If human can maintain a respectful and non-intrusive (非侵入性的) attitude,it will not be a bad thing, and our release attempt could then be successful.
( )5.What do we know about the author’s job
[A] It was his initial career choice.
[B] It forbids close interaction with animals.
[C] It mainly aims to cure injured animals.
[D] It involves both rescue and release efforts.
( )6.Which of the following best describes the author’s feeling to release the rescued animals
[A] Ambitious. [B] Cheerful.
[C] Sorrowful. [D] Anxious.
( )7.What does the underlined phrase “imprinted on” mean in Paragraph 3
[A] Was attached to.
[B] Was aware of.
[C] Was sensitive to.
[D] Was cautious of.
( )8.What is the key to the success of wildlife rescue work
[A] Animals’ faith in humans.
[B] Humans’ knowledge in the work.
[C] Humans’ attitude towards animals.
[D] Animals’ ability to survive in the wild.
