Unit 1 Face values
A
Courage is a huge theme in my life,a quality I constantly seek, appreciate, and analyse. The root of“courage” is“cor”,the Latin word for heart.Originally, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart”. While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays,I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.
I recently witnessed an example of true courage.During a mountain-climbing trip with my 15-year-old daughter and some college students,I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group.Despite my suggestions to rest, she persisted until she couldn’t breathe properly.
Panicked,I called out to the front for help, but there was no response, and we had no cellphone signal.Fortunately, two students just came back to check on us.They offered assistance and calmed us down.As we continued at a slower pace, they shared their own experiences, from starting out as beginners like my daughter to becoming consistently among the first to reach the peak.
“You know,” one of them said, looking at my daughter,“I was just like you when I started. But with practice and proper pace, you’ll get there too.”
“Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact,it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it.That’s how we improve and grow.”
Reaching the mountain top was a huge relief for both my daughter and me.However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasising the importance of staying together in tough environments.Their words led the group to apologise to us for overlooking our struggle.
I was totally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learnt that it’s okay to be the least experienced in a group.Courage,I’ve come to realise, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage,we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little better.
( )1.Why does the author mention the original meaning of courage
[A] To argue for the true essence of courage.
[B] To question the common opinion of courage.
[C] To show the changing meaning of courage.
[D] To compare different interpretations of courage.
( )2.What did the two students suggest the author’s daughter do
[A] Challenge her own limits.
[B] Seek help whenever possible.
[C] Keep to a suitable pace.
[D] Stick with experienced climbers.
( )3.Which action in the mountain-climbing story is an example of true courage
[A] The mother asked the girl to rest.
[B] The girl tried hard not to fall behind.
[C] The group celebrated their reaching the top.
[D] The two students pointed out the group’s fault.
( )4.What does the author intend to tell us
[A] Kindness connects us all.
[B] Being a beginner takes courage.
[C] With courage, everyone can be perfect.
[D] We don’t have to be a hero to be brave.

Empathy(同理心) is one of those strange qualities—something almost everyone wants, but few know how to truly give or receive it.In a world where self-satisfaction is emphasised,it is in short supply but high demand. This is all the more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy for those around them.
What Is Empathy —Many people confuse sympathy and empathy, but they are two distinct values.Empathy is not just the ability to understand someone’s feelings;criminals often take advantage of people by appearing to understand their feelings and subsequently gaining their trust.Empathy is more than that. Not only is it the ability to recognise how someone feels, but it also values and respects the feelings of another person. It means treating others with kindness, dignity, and understanding.
Kids Need To See Adults Show Empathy—While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts,in most cases kids need to see empathy modeled by the adults around them.It begins with the way parents relate to their children.Parents who show an interest in the things that matter to their kids and respond to emotions in a positive and caring way are teaching the skill of empathy.
Meet Emotional Needs—When children have their emotional needs met,two things happen. They learn how to meet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored in what they are receiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give to others when the need arises but first they need to receive. An empty jug cannot fill a cup.
It’s a good idea to talk to kids about emotions and how other people experience them.Give their emotions names(for example, jealousy, anger, and love) and teach them that these are normal.Talk to them about how to handle emotions in a positive way and point out situations where other people are experiencing emotions.Teach them about respecting the emotions of others and show them how to act in a situation where a response is required.
( )5.Why is the next generation taught to have empathy
[A] Because people tend to centre themselves.
[B] Because everyone lacks empathy.
[C] Because empathy is a strange quality.
[D] Because it’s better to give than to receive.
( )6.Which situation can empathy be used in
[A] When a mathematician is calculating the area of a farmland.
[B] When a teacher is comforting a student about his failure in exams.
[C] When a criminal is cheating a victim.
[D] When a dancer is dancing to music.
( )7.What does the underlined sentence “An empty jug cannot fill a cup.” mean
[A] An empty jug is too small to hold a cup.
[B] It’s a must to talk to kids about emotions.
[C] Adults should set an example to kids.
[D] Kids give empathy with their emotional needs met first.
( )8.What is the main topic of the passage
[A] How to train kids to have empathy.
[B] How to distinguish sympathy and empathy.
[C] How to help kids finish empathy-related tasks.
[D] Whether kids can be trained to be more empathetic.

2.【解析】 根据下文尤其是“if you actually took a chance on yourself”和“Don’t let your future self be disappointed by your present self.”
3.【解析】 设空处前的“It doesn’t matter how...in their fields.”
5.【解析】 设空处前的“Sometimes,following your passion...and your dreams.”
