Unit 2 A life’s work
Ⅰ.阅读理解(每题2.5分,共20分)
A
It was a cold May morning when I received an email from an old friend inviting me to join a 10-day all-girls surf trip.I knew I had to say yes.The trip seemed simple enough.10 women aged 30 to 45,all complete strangers, were to meet on the coast of Portugal to try something new:surfing in the Atlantic Ocean.I have always loved travelling,so I eagerly sent an email to my boss asking for time off to make the trip.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt over my past 33 years,it’s that adults typically spend their days mastering the things they’ve done before. It seems like we pride ourselves on becoming experts in whatever field we’ve fallen into, knowing more about less. Now,in theory, this is a great strategy,as it allows you to become really good at one particular thing, but it also kind of ends up leaving some skills lacking.
I met my new surfing companions on the grass of the hotel lawn in a small surf town called Ericeira.Despite our different personalities and backgrounds,we were all united in a strong desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle and grow.
The shores at Ericeira, where beginners learn to surf, are shallow and covered with slippery rocks. They make for softer waves but are difficult to ride.
Guided by our amazing coaches, together,we faced the waves.Sometimes,it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us,but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air.Honestly,I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked.
Learning a new skill taught me the humility (谦虚) that can come from doing badly at something new,and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on.While surfing might not be my lifelong passion, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try.

Lima, the capital of Peru,is the world’s second largest desert city. The region is water-stressed.The annual rainfall is less than 4 cm.Access to water is an ongoing problem for the residents of this place.
When industrial engineer Abel Cruz was a boy,his weekly work was to climb down a valley in the foothills of the Peruvian Andes to fetch the family’s water from a spring.“It was downhill from the house, far away and steep,” he says.Cruz began dreaming up better ways to collect water. Then he noticed that subtropical plants capture rain and mist with their wide leaves.Actually Lima doesn’t lack in humidity (湿度).Located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains,it is close to the Pacific Ocean, which ensures that blankets of dense fog roll in for three-quarters of a year.Eventually,Abel Cruz struck upon the idea of a fog net.
Each upraised net is 20 square metres, where micro-droplets of water suspended in the foggy atmosphere condense (凝结) and drip down into collection tanks.Approximately 200 to 400 litres of water is collected daily from each net.Locals can fetch it in buckets for small-scale farming.Working in Lima with support from the Creating Water Foundation,Cruz has installed over 3,600 nets on hillsides around the city to capture fog drifting from the Pacific Ocean.Cruz raised funds for hundreds of nets in Peru with his revolutionary initiative. He aims to set up even more fog harvesters, and to treat the water to make it drinkable.
“The planet has less and less fresh water,” Cruz points out,“because the glaciers that are natural reservoirs are disappearing. So we must find a way to accumulate and save water for times of drought.” The technology is life-changing for many families who normally have to rely on water tanks being delivered to them. His approach brings rural development. Moreover, he is also trying to bring healthy and clean water to urban areas lacking water.
( )5.Why does the author mention Cruz’s childhood experience in Paragraph 2
[A] To illustrate the urgency of reducing poverty.
[B] To highlight his responsibility for the family.
[C] To trace the origin of Cruz’s great invention.
[D] To stress Lima’s terrible geographical conditions.
( )6.What do we know about Cruz’s invention
[A] It was inspired by subtropical plants.
[B] It used collection tanks to condense water.
[C] It lowered costs in building irrigation channels.
[D] It solved the drinking water issue with fog harvesters.
( )7.What may Abel Cruz’s efforts lead to
[A] Guaranteeing crop harvests in Peru.
[B] Promoting the recycle of water resources.
[C] Ending poverty by improving traditional farming.
[D] Improving the life quality for people in water-stressed areas.
( )8.What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage
[A] To describe the functions of an innovative fog-catcher.
[B] To call people’s attention to the worsening water crisis.
[C] To seek more support in raising funds for water collection.
[D] To introduce Abel Cruz’s invention and its great significance.
Ⅱ.七选五(每题2.5分,共12.5分)
Supporting Others
We’re always being told that the secret to happiness lies in helping others.Indeed,it’s natural to want to support those we care about, especially if we are in a position to do so.1.
When we offer support,it may not always be wanted.2. In this case, offering support in the manner of “...if I were you,I would...” can feel like a scolding rather than support. If our support feels conditional,it can feel burdensome.
  3. When someone is trying to manage illness or a house move, just saying “What would help you today ” can be amazingly supportive.Or,suggest what you can do for them: picking up some shopping, taking the dog for a walk.Even if it’s not needed, just knowing you’ve been thought of can be supportive in itself.
Try to be mindful of offering support that is disabling, rather than enabling. My son, when aged five, wanted to make a cup of tea.I could see how inspiring it was for him to be able to do this.So I filled the kettle and took him through the safety measures. It felt like a huge risk but it worked. His pleasure was immeasurable. The same principle applies when we offer support that increases someone else’s capacity.4.
Sometimes the only support that’s needed is to listen without judgement.5. This reassures them that someone cares enough to listen while they ground themselves. When times are tough, remember to keep things stable.Waiting until the storm has passed is all it takes.
Support often works best when it’s a two-way process. It is good to know how to accept help from others as well as offer support to them.
A.Here are the pros and cons of supporting others.
B.Just be there, while someone lets out their feelings.
C.Ask what support is needed and provide a practical one.
D.This can often be a bigger gift than just doing it for them.
E.But we can do more by thinking about the support we offer.
F.Because being judgmental can only make someone annoyed.
G.Sometimes people are trying to manage life in their own way.

Supporting Others
We’re always being told that the secret to happiness lies in helping others.Indeed,it’s natural to want to support those we care about, especially if we are in a position to do so.1.
E
When we offer support,it may not always be wanted.2. In this case, offering support in the manner of “...if I were you,I would...” can feel like a scolding rather than support. If our support feels conditional,it can feel burdensome.
G
  3. When someone is trying to manage illness or a house move,
just saying “What would help you today ” can be amazingly supportive.
Or,suggest what you can do for them: picking up some shopping, taking the dog for a walk.Even if it’s not needed, just knowing you’ve been thought of can be supportive in itself.
C
Try to be mindful of offering support that is disabling, rather than enabling. My son, when aged five, wanted to make a cup of tea.I could see how inspiring it was for him to be able to do this.So I filled the kettle and took him through the safety measures. It felt like a huge risk but it worked. His pleasure was immeasurable. The same principle applies when we offer support that increases someone else’s capacity.4.
D
Sometimes the only support that’s needed is to listen without judgement.5. This reassures them that someone cares enough to listen while they ground themselves. When times are tough, remember to keep things stable.Waiting until the storm has passed is all it takes.
Support often works best when it’s a two-way process. It is good to know how to accept help from others as well as offer support to them.
B
A.Here are the pros and cons of supporting others.
B.Just be there, while someone lets out their feelings.
C.Ask what support is needed and provide a practical one.
D.This can often be a bigger gift than just doing it for them.
E.But we can do more by thinking about the support we offer.
F.Because being judgmental can only make someone annoyed.
