UNIT 4 NATURAL DISASTERS
Ⅰ.阅读理解(每题2.5分,共20分)
A
Are flash floods becoming more serious According to the Environment Agency (EA), around tens of thousands of properties in England alone are at risk of flooding.Climate change is bringing more unpredictable weather patterns, wetter weather and rising sea levels.Therefore protecting your home from flooding has never been more important.Here are some things you can do.
First, stay informed. Download the corresponding weather app and allow notices.This app will provide you with real-time weather warnings allowing you to take appropriate measures.
Depending on the severity of the warning, this could range from ensuring you have a good supply of drinking water to leaving.Extreme weather events are an unstoppable force—
sometimes leaving the area will be your only safe option.
Second, know the level of risk by looking at flood maps.You may be required to have flood insurance if you live in a high-risk area.
Third, create an emergency plan.If you need to leave in a hurry, do you have a place to stay Also, could you weather the storm Make sure you always keep emergency supplies to last several days, including a first-aid case.Having a way of recharging your mobile phone is worth considering too.
But be particularly careful when travelling by car.Don’t drive through flooded streets—it’s difficult to judge the water depth, and roadways hidden below the water can collapse.If floodwaters cause your vehicle to lose control, give it up and seek the higher ground. Rapidly rising water can sweep the vehicle away.Know your surroundings and head to the higher ground, and listen to the radio updates when in a flood.
Plan for the worst; hope for the best.The Met Office predicted that extreme rainfall events could be four times as frequent by 2080 compared to the 1980s.In the face of increasing climate-related challenges, adopting a proactive approach to flood protection seems increasingly advisable.

On 1 January 2024, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake occurred on the Noto Peninsula (能登半岛) on the country’s western edge, Japan.More than 2,000 active fault lines (断层线) lie beneath Japan, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
Many scientists have long considered earthquake forecasting to be impossible.But given recent improvements in artificial intelligence, some researchers have been studying whether that could change.
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have increased such hopes for earthquake prediction with a seven-month trial in China.In all, the algorithm (演算法) successfully forecast 14 earthquakes, each within about 320 kilometres of its actual epicenter (震中).Meanwhile, it missed one quake and predicted eight that never happened. The trial was part of an international AI-design competition, one of a few such events held in recent years to advance earthquake prediction technologies.
Sergey Fomel, a geoscientist at UT Austin and a member of the research team, says in a statement.“We’re not yet close to making predictions for anywhere in the world, but what we achieved tells us that what we thought was an impossible problem is solvable in principle.”
Additionally, machine learning could help detect hidden patterns in data or collect more data to better inform earthquake forecasting, Hutchison writes for an academic journal.For example, some researchers are showing how AI might use recordings from a specific seismic site to anticipate an earthquake’s magnitude.One team has built and trained neural networks to predict where aftershocks may occur after an initial strike.And others are using machine learning to identify and extract seismic waves—the vibrations that spread through Earth during tectonic activity (构造活动)—from other noises in the ground.
( )5.What’s the function of the first paragraph
[A] To explain a concept.
[B] To introduce a new topic.
[C] To supply a summary.
[D] To provide an example.

[A] The recent progress in theories.
[B] The use of traditional methods.
[C] The increasing number of earthquakes.
[D] The advancements in artificial intelligence.
( )7.What do we know from the third paragraph
[A] The trial was conducted by Chinese.
[B] The algorithm was totally successful.
[C] AI shows promise in earthquake prediction.
[D] The AI competition only focused on earthquakes.
( )8.What is the best title for the passage

For many, an act of kindness is its own reward. But Eva Hachey found her selflessness answered in ways she could never have imagined.
For weeks, Eva Hachey had imagined adopting a golden Chihuahua with a white spot on its forehead. And there he was, at her local SPCA in Fredericton, New Brunswick.The dog had been treated unkindly by his previous owners and was timid. “He’d come to me, then back away and growl, then come back to me,” Hachey said. “After 15 minutes, the attendant picked him up and put him in my lap.He started giving me kisses.He stole my heart in that moment.” She adopted the ten-month-old puppy on the spot and named him Bruno.
Bruno lived happily with Hachey and her 35-year-old daughter, Angel Hutchinson, for five months.Then, on the evening of 26 September 2016, Hachey, 52 at the time, returned home as usual at 8 p.m.from her job as a chiropractic(按摩疗法) assistant and office manager.And as usual, she ate supper in front of the TV in the living room.Around 10:30 p.m., a friend called, just as Bruno went into Hutchinson’s room to go to sleep for the night.Hachey and her friend chatted a bit, and as Hachey hung up, she noticed the time was 11:08 p.m.
“The next thing I remember was a male voice saying, ‘Eva, Eva, wake up.’ It was an emergency doctor,” said Hachey.“I looked around, and the room was just full of people.And I said, ‘What are you doing in my house ’”
What they were doing was saving her life.By the time Hachey hung up with her friend, Hutchinson had been fast asleep in her bedroom and Bruno had been in his usual spot next to her under the blankets.Hachey believed Bruno heard something odd then and possibly went to the living room to investigate.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Unexpectedly, Bruno ran back to the bedroom and tried every means to awaken Hutchinson.
Paragraph 2:
A year later, Hachey finally fully recovered.

What Eva Hachey adopted a golden Chihuahua named Bruno, who later saved her life after she suffered a stroke.
明确主题定冲突 Theme The power of kindness and the unexpected rewards of showing compassion.
Conflict & Clue Conflict: Eva had a medical emergency and the doctors were in a race against time to save her life. Clue: Bruno heard something odd and then went to the living room to investigate.
预设问题定走向 Para.1 Unexpectedly, Bruno ran back to the bedroom and tried every means to awaken Hutchinson. Q1:How did Bruno manage to alert Hutchinson Q2:What thoughts and emotions went through Hutchinson’s mind when she was awakened by Bruno Q3: What measures did Hutchinson take
Para.2 A year later, Hachey finally fully recovered. Q1: What did Hachey do to Bruno Q2:What did Hachey do to show her gratitude and appreciation after recovery Q3:How did the strengthened bond between Hachey and Bruno impact their future
  One possible version:
Unexpectedly, Bruno ran back to the bedroom and tried every means to awaken Hutchinson.He jumped onto the bed and pawed at Hutchinson’s face, barking loudly.
When that didn’t work, he bit her sleeve, pulling hard. Finally, Hutchinson opened her eyes, confused at first but soon realising something was wrong when Bruno led her to the living room.Without hesitation, Hutchinson called the police on her phone.The ambulance finally arrived and Hachey was rushed to the hospital.It turned out that she suffered a stroke and would have died without the quick response.
A year later, Hachey finally fully recovered. She hugged Bruno tightly,tears of gratitude in her eyes.Hachey threw a party to celebrate her recovery and thanked all the people who had helped her.She said Bruno was her hero and she would cherish him forever.
Bruno, as if understanding the significance of what he had done, wagged his tail happily around her.From that day on, their bond grew even stronger as they continued to share a life filled with love and trust.Actually, any act of kindness is its own reward, no matter how small it seems.
点津:中jumped onto,pawed at为动作链描写;barking loudly为现在分词作伴随状语;
为过去分词和现在分词作伴随状语;
中It 作形式主语,代替后面的that从句;
为独立主格结构;
为过去分词短语作定语。
