Vivien He is a senior at a high school in Rolling Hills Estates. Growing up in Southern California, where earthquakes often happen, this 18-year-old girl has spent lots of time hiding under her school desk during earthquake drills. These ground tremors (small earthquakes) are the world’s deadliest natural disasters. And they’re often unpredictable.
Earthquake early warning systems do exist. One is the Shake Alert system on the U. S. West Coast. Earthquake monitoring stations in the Shake Alert network detect ground shaking when a quake strikes. Those stations then alert people that the ground under them may soon start to shake. But it’s hard to predict how much the ground will shake at any given place. And people closest to an earthquake’s source are out of luck. They’ll feel the shaking before they can get an alert.
Therefore, Vivien built an at-home earthquake sensor. Called the Qube, this device uses a motion sensor called a geophone to feel tremors that may mark the beginning of a bigger quake. Then, it can warn users by sounding the alarm or sending text alerts. To build it, Vivien bought a machine and watched YouTube videos to learn how to use it. Then she went to work in a spare bathroom.
During nine months of testing, Vivien’s Qube detected all earthquakes over magnitude 3 around Los Angeles. The motion data captured by her Qube also matched those from a nearby seismometer (地震仪) in the Southern California Seismic Network.
Vivien is now building up a network of Qubes around Los Angeles. “I have eight devices in different homes,” she says. A widespread Qube network could serve as a role similar to that of ShakeAlert seismic stations. When one Qube starts to shake, it could alert users across town to an oncoming quake. But unlike earthquake monitoring stations, Qubes are tiny and inexpensive. About the size of a Rubik’s cube, one Qube costs less than $100 to make. So, many more of them could be installed around a city.
4. What can we learn about Vivien He when she was little
A. She used to like playing hide and seek in school.
B She was often at risk of experiencing an earthquake.
C. She once got injured severely in an earthquake drill.
D. She showed no interest in studying natural disasters.
5. Why does the author mention the ShakeAlert system
A. To prove the necessity of early earthquake monitoring stations.
B. To compare ShakeAlert with Vivien’s Qube in terms of accuracy.
C. To highlight the technological advancements in earthquake detection.
D. To show the drawback of existing earthquake early warning systems.
6. What’s the main function of Vivien He’s device
A Monitoring tremors and sending alarms. B. Collecting data about minor earthquakes.
C. Predicting the center of an earthquake. D. Assessing the sizes of earthquakes.
7. What’s implied about the network of Qubes
A. It’s very challenging to build it. B. It has limitations in large cities.
C. It can be easily applied at a low cost. D. It just requires eight devices in each place.

The famous marshmallow test, where children are asked to choose one marshmallow now or two later, may reveal more than willpower. Recent research suggests the ability to delay gratification (满足) could help protect against cognitive (认知) decline. This skill strengthens the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for planning and reasoning. Just as regular physical exercise helps maintain muscle strength, regularly practising delayed gratification may help maintain cognitive functions throughout life. Over time, it will definitely build up mental resilience.
Resisting immediate rewards stimulates “cool” controlling strategies in the prefrontal cortex, while giving in to temptation involves emotional decision-making areas. Regular practice of these “cool” strategies contributes to cognitive reserve, which highlights the importance of mental stimulation. This regular practice will potentially delay cognitive decline. It’s not just about willpower, but the ability to plan for the future, which is essential to make healthier lifestyle choices that benefit brain health.
These skills can be developed at any age. While early childhood lays the foundation for delayed gratification, adults can strengthen self-control through consistent practice. Strategies like setting specific goals enhance these abilities. Studies show those who regularly practice self-control tend to maintain better cognitive functions as they age, demonstrating stronger problem-solving skills.
Physical activity matters in this relationship. Research shows that higher physical activity is linked to better cognitive function, especially in older adults. Delaying gratification helps maintain regular exercise habits, creating a positive feedback circle that supports brain health. The more we practice delayed gratification, the more we strengthen our brain’s ability of self-control and protect against future cognitive decline.
To develop these skills, start with small delays and gradually increase the waiting period. Set achievable goals and practice mindfulness to manage emotional urges. It’s never too late to start building cognitive resilience, and the small choices we make today can have a lasting impact on our mental health in the long term.
8. How does the author illustrate delayed gratification in paragraph 1
A. By defining concepts.
B. By giving descriptions.
C. By making comparisons.
D. By conducting surveys.
9. What’s the function of practicing “cool” controlling strategies regularly
A. Enhancing cognitive reserve.
B. Arousing emotional awareness.
C. Developing temptation resistance.
D. Boosting willpower performance.
10. How can adults improve their problem-solving skills
A. By building physical fitness gradually.
B. By exercising self-control consistently.
C. By making feedback circles immediately.
D. By establishing major objectives successfully.
11. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Delayed gratification benefits brain health.
B. Physical activity increases muscle strength.
C. Waiting period influences cognitive function.
D. Positive mindfulness manages emotional drive.

DeepSeek, an AI tool developed in China, has become a global hit with over 100 million users in just six months. Within weeks, the number of its users increased dramatically, reaching more than 100M users across over 100 countries. From students to engineers, people use it to solve math problems, write reports, and even create art. Adopted by education, healthcare, and finance sectors, it topped app stores in 35 nations globally.
AI has been widely applied in all the walks of our lives. For instance, a hospital used it to analyze patient data and find the best treatment plans 10 times faster than before. Researchers even accelerated cancer drug discovery by analyzing 50 million chemical compounds in weeks instead of years with the aid of AI. Another case showed how farmers in a pilot project in Kenya, used AI to increase farm yields by 25% through smart farming strategies.
DeepSeek’s adopted a unique algorithm (算法) which is designed to be fast and efficient, using advanced but lightweight models that work quickly without needing a lot of resources. They focus on specific tasks, like coding or solving technical problems, and adapt to learn from detailed data. This makes it more competitive than general-purpose models like ChatGPT in specialized areas.
However, Dr. Li Stevia, an AI safety researcher, warns about risks. “If AI grows too fast without rules, it might make mistakes or be used improperly,” she said. She worries that rapid development could lead to issues like false information or privacy leaks.
To address these concerns, DeepSeek’s team announced a new “Safety Check” feature. This tool will automatically review AI suggestions for accuracy and safety before showing them to users. “We want AI to help, not harm,” said project leader Zhang Wei.
12. What is the first paragraph mainly telling us about DeepSeek
A. Its target users. B. Its sales ranking.
C. Its powerful uses. D. Its wide popularity.
13. What is the author’s purpose in mentioning hospitals and farmers
A. To show AI can solve real problems. B. To compare different AI tools.
C. To explain how to use smartphones. D. To criticize AI’s high cost.
14. Why does DeepSeek outperform ChatGPT in special tasks
A. Because it uses more computational resources for training.
B. Because it focuses on broad applications to ensure adaptability.
C. Because it uses a specialized model to learn from detailed data.
D. Because it prioritizes slower processing to guarantee accuracy.
15. How will DeepSeek’s team remove Dr. Li Stevia’s concern
A. By raising service prices. B. By adding a “Safety Check” tool.
C. By stopping free services. D. By using expensive computers.

Time Management Strategies for Senior High Students
As a senior high student, balancing academic responsibilities with personal life can feel overwhelming. Between completing assignments, reviewing notes, and preparing for exams, it’s easy to lose track of time. However, with proper strategies, you can turn this challenge into an opportunity for growth. ___16___
___17___ This means identifying which tasks are urgent and important, and tackling them first. Create a to-do list every morning, ranking tasks from high to low priority. A common mistake is focusing on easy tasks first — resisting this temptation will significantly boost your efficiency.
Another essential technique is minimizing distractions. A recent study reveals that students lose 22 minutes of focus after each interruption. Two measures are common. If social media tends to distract you, set clear boundaries, such as turning off notifications during study hours. ___18___
Regular breaks are equally vital despite seeming counterproductive. The Pomodoro Technique — working for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break — has proven effective. ___19___ A short walk or some light stretching will help maintain your concentration throughout longer study sessions.
Mastering time management isn’t about doing more tasks, but doing the right tasks effectively. ___20___ With consistent practice, you’ll find yourself accomplishing more while reducing unnecessary stress. Remember, the habits you develop now will benefit you far beyond the college entrance examination.
A. Regain full concentration after interruption.
B. Physical activity is a great way to stay healthy in daily life.
C. Here’s a step-by-step guide to optimize your schedule.
D. Success begins with recognizing your most valuable matters.
E. You can also consider using apps that block access to entertainment websites.
