UNIT 2 MORALS AND VIRTUES
Ⅰ.阅读理解(每题2.5分,共20分)
A
(2025·八省联考)
Jim Johnson,a mail carrier,was an institution in the leafy Westmoreland,Westhaven and Westover Hills neighborhoods,just north of downtown Wilmington,where he delivered much more than the mail.He knew all the kids and their pets by name;he carried in the groceries;he took note of unlocked doors,offered gardening advice,and taught more than a few young boys the art of the curveball.When he wasn’t doing all that,Jim was running across a checkerboard of green lawns(草坪) to ensure the local postal service did not fall short of its daily promise.
Though the postal service is often disparaged now,the trust in local postal service lives on.In many communities,that trust is won every day when life-saving medicine,greeting cards,social security checks,college acceptance letters—even the bills—appear in mailboxes in front of the houses.
After more than three decades,Jim approached his final days on the job much like any other.He drove a boxy postal truck to North DuPont Road for the first unofficial stop of the day.Butch,a dog who belonged to one of the neighbors,was waiting just like every day before.And just like every day before,he got into the jump seat and they were off.On the route,Jim and Butch had become inseparable.Now,the dog and the mailman would ride off to retirement together.At every stop,Jim accepted the parting good wishes of families that had become his own.There were tears and laughter,and hugs filled with warm memories.
It’s been 33 years since Jim left the route,but we are still reminded of the deep bond established between community and letter carrier.That’s what the postal service means to us.

B
  Helping others is not only good for them but a good thing to do.It also makes us happier and healthier.Giving also connects us to others,creating stronger communities and helping to build a happier society for everyone.So if you want to feel good,do good!
Doing things for others—whether unplanned,small acts or regular volunteering—is a powerful way to increase our own happiness as well as that of those around us.The people we help may be strangers,family,friends,colleagues or neighbours.They can be old or young, nearby or faraway.
Giving isn’t just about money,and therefore you don’t need to be rich.Giving to others can be as simple as a single kind word,a smile or a thoughtful gesture.It can include giving time,energy,care,skills,thoughts or attention.Sometimes these mean as much,if not more than financial gifts.
Scientific studies show that helping others boosts happiness.It increases life satisfaction, provides a sense of meaning,increases feelings of ability, improves our mood and reduces stress.It can help to take our minds off our own troubles too.
Kindness towards others is the glue which connects individual happiness with the wider community and social well-being.Giving to others helps us connect with people and meets one of our basic human needs—relatedness.
Kindness seems to be contagious (有感染力的).When we see someone do something kind or thoughtful,or we are on the receiving end of kindness,it inspires us to be kinder to ourselves.In this way,kindness spreads from one person to the next,influencing the behaviour of people who never see the original act.Kindness really is the key to creating a happier,more trusting local community.
( )5.Why can giving help to build a happier society
[A] It can bring confidence.
[B] It can connect us to others.
[C] It can make us healthy.
[D] It can make us rich.
( )6.What can we infer from Paragraph 4
[A] Helping others makes our trouble disappear forever.
[B] We feel more content with life by helping others.
[C] Helping others removes a sense of meaning.
[D] We feel no stress by helping others.

[C] Happiness. [D] Wealth.
( )8.What is the main idea of the text
[A] Helping others is good for ourselves.

  One day,my nine-year-old younger brother Jeff came home from school earlier than me.When I returned home,I found he was shouting at our mum—who was busy cooking in the kitchen—about the clothes that needed washing.
“Mum,why haven’t you washed my clothes ” he asked,pointing at the dirty clothes he had taken off two days before.“I want to wear them tomorrow,” Jeff added.However,the clothes that he was wearing still looked clean.“Dear,I’ll wash it after cooking,” Mum told Jeff,looking anxious and upset.Without replying,Jeff unhappily went to his bedroom and closed the door,with a long face.
I was shocked about Jeff’s bad behaviour towards Mum.How unsympathetic he was! Our washing machine had been out of order for two months.Because our parents were on a tight budget and were too busy,they still didn’t buy a new one.So recently our family had to wash our clothes by hand,which was time-wasting and truly hard work.
Just when I decided to scold my little brother,Dad came home from work,and I told him what had happened.
Dad was upset and felt sorry for Mum,knowing how hard she worked all day.She was a saleswoman in a supermarket and did all she could to support our family.Often,Dad tried to help with some of the housework.He didn’t want Mum to have too much burden,knowing her heavy work as a saleswoman.I also tried to spare time to help do housework,sharing some of the family burden.However,Jeff was a lazy and naughty boy,who hardly did housework.
Now,our dad decided it was high time to teach him a lesson.“Jeff,come here,” Dad called out.“I have some good news for you.” Jeff immediately came and asked excitedly,“What,Dad ” “Your mum and I are too busy recently.Tonight,I want you to wash your own clothes,” Dad smiled.Jeff immediately refused,shaking his head.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
“Then,you won’t get your pocket money next week.I’m serious,” Dad replied.
Paragraph 2:
At 9 pm,Jeff was still struggling to rinse (漂洗) the clothes,realising the work wasn’t easy at all.

When One day after school and work
Where At home
What Jeff shouted at Mum for not washing his clothes.The family’s washing machine was out of order and they had to wash clothes by hand.Dad decided to teach Jeff a lesson by asking him to wash his own clothes.
Theme The importance of understanding and sharing family responsibilities
Conflict & Clue Conflict:Jeff’s selfishness and lack of responsibility in demanding his clothes be washed immediately versus the family’s efforts and difficulties in managing household chores Clue:①The washing machine being out of order for two months ②The family had to wash clothes by hand,which was time-consuming and labour-intensive. ③Jeff refused to wash his own clothes when asked by Dad.
Para.1 “Then,you won’t get your pocket money next week.I’m serious,” Dad replied. Q1:How did Jeff react to his father’s requirement Q2:Did Jeff really understand the consequence of not doing the housework Q3:How was Jeff feeling when ready to wash the clothes
Para.2 At 9 pm,Jeff was still struggling to rinse (漂洗) the clothes,realising the work wasn’t easy at all. Q1:What did Jeff learn from the work Q2:Did Jeff realise his mistake Q3:Did this experience change Jeff’s attitude towards housework
  One possible version:
“Then,you won’t get your pocket money next week.I’m serious,” Dad replied.Jeff’s face turned pale at Dad’s stern words.He bit his lip,his eyes filled with disbelief and panic. For a few seconds,he just stood there frozen,unable to believe that his favourite pocket money was in danger.Then,a sense of determination seemed to dawn on him as he slowly bent down to pick up the dirty clothes.With a heavy heart and a reluctant pace,he headed towards the washbasin,murmuring under his breath,“I’ll do it myself.”
At 9 pm,Jeff was still struggling to rinse (漂洗) the clothes,realising the work wasn’t easy at all.His hands were red and sore and he felt an exhaustion he had never experienced before.Mum and Dad walked over and saw his efforts.Mum gently patted his head and said,“Dear,now you know how hard it is for us.”Jeff nodded,his eyes downcast and filled with remorse.“I’m sorry,Mum and Dad.I was so selfish and didn’t understand your efforts.I’ll change.”From that day on,Jeff started to help with the housework more often,becoming a more understanding and responsible boy.
点津:bit his lip为动作描写,his eyes filled with disbelief and panic为独立主格结构,也是神态描写,描写Jeff的惊讶和怀疑;
frozen为形容词作伴随状语,生动形象地描绘出Jeff当时呆立不动的状态。unable to...为形容词短语作状语,增添了句子的丰富性,揭示了Jeff内心的震惊和担忧;
介词短语With a heavy heart and a reluctant pace作状语,以及现在分词短语murmuring under his breath,“I’ll do it myself.”作状语,细腻地表现出Jeff从抗拒到无奈接受的过程;
his eyes downcast and filled with remorse为独立主格结构作状语,“downcast”和“remorse”描绘出Jeff认错时的内疚和后悔之情;
现在分词短语becoming...作伴随状语,给出了一个积极的结局,展现了这次经历对Jeff的良好影响,也传递了积极的价值观。
