Bear Grylls’s Adventure Tales
Mr Grylls has established himself as television’s foremost survivalist. In episodes of a well-known TV show,he has been dropped into some punishing environments (the sand of the Sahara, the frigid Siberian wilderness) with little more than a knife,a water bottle, and the instructions to make it out alive.Below are excerpts (摘录) from an interview with him.
Q:When did you first grow interested in the outdoors
A:My late dad had been a climber. He started taking me out into the wild at a young age, doing everything from climbing sea cliffs hundreds of feet up to making boats and building treehouses. He taught me to take risks but to always listen to my inner voice and to work out clever solutions even when the situation has left you dramatically low on tools.
Q:Last time when you were in southern Africa, your parachute (降落伞) failed to open, resulting in an injury that nearly left you paralysed. What effect did that have on you
A:Those long months during recovery were a bitter time for me.I couldn’t move and was in constant pain.It was while I was lying there that I determined to refind my childhood dream of climbing Mount Qomolangma.I counted myself blessed to be able to leave that hospital fully recovered, and determined to live life boldly and without regrets.
Q:What was your most dangerous trip
A:Probably a small expedition I led across the Arctic Ocean in an open inflatable boat.We hit very unusual subzero storms off the ice packs of Greenland and gale-force winds. In a tiny open boat, you are truly at the mercy of the weather, and your survival is then taken out of your hands and put into those of Mother Nature. All five of us had to face the prospect of death during those nights.

Recently,as I watched my son Nathan play basketball for his high school team,I was starting to feel sorry for myself and for him.His team was facing adversity on the court and he was playing in a hostile environment—it was the opponent’s home gym filled with their supporters, and Nathan’s team was trailing (落后) for three quarters of the game.As for me,I had been dismissed from my job earlier in the day.
During my drive home,I kept telling myself that I would find work again in a short time—I was confident in my experience and ability. This was the same belief that I tried to instill into my son.
The basketball game entered the fourth quarter with Nathan’s team still trailing.I saw the resolve on his as well as his teammates’ faces as they fought back to not only tie (打成平局),but then go ahead by three points. Then,a player from the other team made an unbelievable shot to tie again. With a tie game and seconds on the clock,Nathan found himself with the ball and with skill and confidence, and he proceeded to make a basket with a defender hanging all over him.The other player was called for a foul (犯规).
As Nathan stood at the foul line preparing for a shot that would put his team up by three points,I saw the focus and determination on his face—there was no room for self-doubt.Nathan was able to tune out all the distractions and nail the free throw (罚球) with such skill. It was as if he had done it a thousand times.
As I sat there,my heart bursting with pride,it dawned on me that I had taught him perseverance in the face of adversity, and he had just taught me the same lesson. That brief moment of self-doubt and feeling sorry for myself was blown away by the actions of my son on the basketball court. He will play in the finals, but it doesn’t matter if he wins or loses. At this moment,we both won.
( )4.What did the author estimate his son’s team would be like at first
[A] The team would lose the home match.
[B] The team would finally win.
[C] The team would win the championship.
[D] The team would lose the away match.
( )5.What can we know about the author according to Paragraph 2
[A] He is self-doubting and pessimistic.
[B] He is self-confident and optimistic.
[C] He is hardworking and intelligent.
[D] He is easy-going and warm-hearted.
( )6.What does the underlined phrase “tune out” in Paragraph 4 mean
[A] Avoid. [B] Focus.
[C] Create. [D] Receive.
( )7.Which of the following is the best title for the text

My cousin Allen was the coolest person in all of Minneapolis.By the age of 19,he was a top football player at the University of Minnesota.I wanted to be just like him.So when Allen asked me to join him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota,I said yes!
After planning the trip,we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite,Allen pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站) where the foresters worked.
Allen knew all the tricks of an experienced camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest floor,he started the campfire using only stone and steel—no matches. After a day of travelling,we were very hungry. We ate beef and rice and some soup as well.
Exhausted,we crawled into our sleeping bags early.Allen was still talking about his past camping adventures when a sudden wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped and it began to snow.Allen knew of a way to increase the temperature inside the tent.He dragged a log from the woods, wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log and then placed it near the campfire. The heat from the fire reflected into the tent.Soon the tent was warm again and thoughts of lake fish filled my dreams.
I was still dreaming when Allen woke me up in a panic. Our tent was on fire! The snow had stopped during the night, but the wind had fanned the flames of the fire towards our tent.Frightened by the flames,I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Allen inside.Without any hesitation,I reached into the burning tent, grabbed him,and dragged him to the icy lake.We checked each other to make sure neither of us was hurt.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Later,as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm,we considered our situation.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly,we heard a noise in the forest.

  One possible version:
Later,as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm,we considered our situation. Our campsite was deep in the forest and we were completely cut off from the outside world, with all of our supplies consumed by the fire. Our bodies shivered as all we had on us was thin underwear. We yelled for help, but unsurprisingly, there was no response.“The ranger station!”Allen suddenly shouted with excitement. “If only we could catch the forester’s attention!” We fed some wood into the dying fire, pinning all our hopes on someone noticing it. After waiting what seemed like centuries,we were on the edge of mental collapse.
Suddenly,we heard a noise in the forest. With it becoming louder and closer,Allen recognised it as the sound of a jeep. Then the noise came to an abrupt end,and I saw a dark shape moving towards us.It was a forester! He had spied the light and smoke and came to check. We quickly jumped into his warm vehicle as he put out the fire.On the way to the ranger station,we briefly explained what had happened and expressed our sincere gratitude for his timely help.At the station,we put on some warm clothes and called our parents. It was only when we hung up the phone that we finally realised we had managed to survive the accident.
