Adams Cassinga has had many identities: refugee (难民), journalist, mining consultant. And now, defender of wildlife.
As a child, he was fascinated by, animals — gorillas living in the forests outside his hometown of Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) — but his path to conservation was winding. His father, who feared Adams would be taken as a child soldier, sent him to South Africa. In Johannesburg, Adams learnt to survive on the streets while teaching himself English in public libraries. After he was granted official refugee status, he studied journalism and landed his first job working for a local newspaper. While working as an investigative reporter in 2016, Adams was shot three times! Adams changed career paths again, this time to work in the profitable mining industry in South Africa. In this role, he returned years later to the DRC to visit gold mines.
One day, while flying to a gold mine in northeastern Congo, Adams saw the wounds of mining operations on the lush forest landscape. He began to think about the beauty of his country’s wild places and the struggle to protect them. After volunteering as an honorary ranger (护林人), Adams took his wildlife mission one big step further, founding Conserve Congo in 2020. Conserve Congo fights illegal hunting and trafficking (非法交易) through undercover investigations in pursuit of criminals in the illegal wildlife trade. With a team of volunteers including police officers, politicians and students, Adams steals into trafficking networks and conducts organized traps with the authorities.
Adams places great value on winning over the hearts and minds of the police officers he works with. “They need to understand the reason behind what we do. We have to transform them into nature lovers. They can only protect what they know and love,” he says. It also partners with multiple national parks, helping to prevent illegal hunting, training volunteers to patrol the parks with rangers, and buying uniforms and other supplies for rangers. To date, the non-profit has worked on more than 6,000 criminal cases, rescued hundreds of trafficked animals from chimps to parrots, and seized tons of ivory and pangolin scales.
4. Why was Adams sent to South Africa by his father
A. To study journalism. B. To become a wildlife defender.
C. To avoid being taken as a child soldier. D. To work in the mining industry.
5. What made Adams decide to change his career to wildlife conservation
A. His love for the mining landscape. B. Being shot as an investigative reporter.
C. The profitable nature of the mining industry. D. Seeing the damage of mining operations to the forest.
6. How does Adams involve police officers in his conservation efforts
A. By training them to work in mines. B. By transforming them into nature lovers.
C. By hiring them as undercover agents. D. By providing them with uniforms and supplies.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Adams
A. Persistent and dedicated. B. Ambitious and humorous.
C. Careful and friendly. D. Generous and optimistic.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. A

Wearing noise-cancelling headphones (降噪耳机) to block out distractions has become increasingly common, especially among young people. However, recent studies suggest that the widespread use of these headphones has led to a significant rise in hearing issues. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the problem is not actually related to the ears but rather results from the brain.
This condition, known as Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), occurs when the brain has difficulty in processing sounds or words, distinguishing them from background noise, which makes it difficult for individuals to engage in conversations in social situations or clearly hear instructions at work or school. While APD has historically been linked to childhood brain injury, ear infections, or genetic factors, experts now suggest that the rise in noise-cancelling headphones may be contributing to the condition.
Although noise-cancelling headphones can be useful in protecting people from loud noises, experts believe they may untrain the brain’s ability to naturally block out background noise. Claire Benton from the British Academy of Audiology explained that by blocking everyday sounds like train noise or traffic, the brain might “forget” how to filter out (过滤) distractions. It’s similar to relying too often on a crutch (拐杖) — just as leg muscles weaken from lack of use, constant use of noise-cancelling headphones may create an artificial environment, where the brain no longer practices filtering out distractions, making it harder to function naturally.
“Those complex, high-level listening skills in your brain don’t fully develop until your late teens. If you have only been wearing noise-cancelling headphones during this crucial period, you may be slightly delaying your ability to process speech and noise,” explained Claire Benton. “Therefore, using them in moderation and occasionally exposing yourself to natural environments can help maintain the brain’s auditory processing abilities. The key lies in balance — protecting your hearing from harmful noises while still giving your brain opportunities to exercise its natural filtering abilities.”
8. What do recent studies suggest about the use of noise-cancelling headphones
A. It improves hearing ability. B. It leads to a rise in hearing issues.
C. It has no impact on health. D. It makes people more focused at work.
9. In what way are noise-cancelling headphones similar to a crutch
A. They both create an artificial environment for people.
B. They both have a negative impact on mental health.
C. Over-reliance on them can lead to the weakening of a natural ability.
D. They both protect people from potential dangers.
10. Which is the key to maintaining the brain’s auditory processing abilities
A. Avoiding any exposure to loud noises at all costs.
B. Only Using noise-cancelling headphones.
C. Ignoring the potential risks and continuing to use headphones.
D. Moderate use of headphones and exposure to natural sounds.
11. How does the author feel about the use of noise-cancelling headphones
A. Cautious. B. Strongly supportive. C. Unconcerned. D. Completely negative.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. A

An old wooden stove (厨灶), bearing rich vivid images, took center stage in Haiyan County, Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, in early February. The images feature historical figures, fairy tales, animals and flowers, all of which are pictured in bright colors. “They all represent people’s respect to heroes and wishes for good fortune,” says Zhao Shengbo, who created the zaotou (a kitchen stove) artwork.
The special art form in Jiaxing was listed as a national cultural heritage in 2011. It was once common for farmhouses, especially those along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, to have a zaotou with auspicious figures or patterns. Locals burned firewood in it to cook, before gas burners or microwave ovens were available. Historical evidence shows the art has a history of at least 300 years.
Most of those engaged in zaotou painting were bricklayers in rural areas where they were often hired by villagers to build a stove in their new home on a good day and paint pictures on the stove. Tools used to produce such art included brushes, rulers, and paint.
Folk craftsmen later also came to express life’s passions through zaotou paintings. They first whitewashed the mud-made stove with limewater (石灰水), and drew the patterns based on the shape of the stove, before applying the final coat of paint. Later, watercolors were applied, mostly red, yellow and blue. “But no matter what material is used, the stove painting is always symbolic and contains good wishes for the owners,” Zhao says.
Although some villages have recently improved the traditional zaotou into an electricity-powered stove for environmental protection, as local authorities have given more support to preserve cultural heritage, zaotou painting has grown with new power. “Now that zaotou paintings have been receiving more support from various sides, I’ll make my effort to create more works and reach out to those who show interest,” Zhao says.
12. What do the images on the zaotou mainly symbolize
A. The beauty of nature. B. The local history and culture.
C. The development of folk art. D. People’s respect for heroes and good wishes.
13. Which can replace the underlined word “auspicious” in Paragraph 2
A. Simple. B. Lucky. C. Strange. D. Complex.
14. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about
A. The steps of creating zaotou paintings. B. The tools used in zaotou painting.
C The materials used in zaotou painting. D. The development of zaotou painting.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text
A. How Gas Burners Replaced Zaotou in Jiaxing

D. The Secret Bond Between Zaotou Painting and Western Oil Painting

Tips for Using Less Plastic
In today’s world, plastic pollution is a pressing environmental issue. Making small changes in our daily lives can significantly reduce our plastic consumption. Here are some practical tips to help you use less plastic.
Carry Your Own Reusable Bags
Gone are the days of relying on single-use plastic bags at the grocery store. ____16____ These bags are not only more durable but also come in various sizes and styles. For example, you can choose a large, sturdy bag for your weekly groceries or a smaller, foldable one for quick trips to the market. By using reusable bags, you can avoid the countless plastic bags that end up in landfills or oceans each year.
____17____
Every time you buy bottled water or coffee in a disposable cup, you contribute to plastic waste. Reusable water bottles and coffee cups are a simple and effective solution. Invest in a high-quality reusable water bottle made of stainless steel or glass. Not only will you save money in the long run, but you can also ensure that the water you drink is free from potential plastic contaminants.
Say No to Straws
____18____ They are often used for just a few minutes but take hundreds of years to decompose. If you really need a straw, consider using a reusable one made of metal, bamboo, or silicone. These reusable straws can be easily cleaned and reused, and they come in fun colors and designs. You can even carry a portable straw with you when you’re out at restaurants or cafes.
Buy in Bulk and Avoid Excessive Packaging
When shopping, try to buy products in bulk whenever possible. ____19____ Many grocery stores now offer bulk sections where you can purchase items like grains, nuts, and dried fruits. Bring your own reusable containers to fill up, and you can avoid the unnecessary plastic packaging that often comes with pre-packaged items.
Choose Plastic-Free Alternatives for Household Items
There are many plastic-free alternatives available for common household items. For example, you can replace plastic toothbrushes with bamboo ones. For storing food, use glass containers with metal lids instead of plastic wrap or plastic storage bags. ____20____
A. Opt for reusable water bottles and coffee cups.
B. Instead, keep a few reusable bags in your car or purse.
C. They are convenient but cause a lot of environmental problems.
D. This reduces the amount of packaging waste you generate.
E. You can also recycle plastic items properly to reduce waste.
F. Straws are among the most commonly used and littered plastic items.

An Unforgettable Earthquake Drill Experience
Last Thursday, our school conducted an earthquake drill to enhance students’ safety awareness and emergency response skills.
The drill took place in the classroom and on the playground at 8 a.m. When the alarm sounded, we quickly hid under our desks, protecting our heads with books. Then, following teachers’ instructions, we evacuated orderly to the playground within three minutes. Teachers also demonstrated first-aid methods for treating injuries.
The drill was highly meaningful. Not only did it teach us how to stay calm in emergencies, but it also strengthened teamwork. Everyone agreed that such practical exercises were essential for safety education.
第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Years ago, I led my 8-year-old daughter Kate and a group of middle school students on an educational tour (研学旅行) to England.
One day, near the end of the visit, we were on a platform (站台) of the subway and prepared to head to their next destination. It was 5 pm and the station was rather crowded. I had been holding Kate’s hand tightly to keep her close. However, as I let go to count my students and ensure everyone was present, a train pulled into the station.
At that moment, Kate, caught up in the flow of the crowd, inadvertently (不经意地) stepped onto the train. As the train doors began to close, I just realized what had happened. I felt very nervous when I saw Kate inside the carriage (车厢). I tried to get on the train to bring Kate back out, but it was too late. The doors were shut, and the train began to move, gradually picking up speed.
My heart raced as I ran along the train. My eyes locked on my daughter through the glass window. Kate’s face was a picture of fear and confusion, her small fists pounding against the window as she cried out for me. Beside Kate stood a man dressed in a black jacket, his dark glasses adding an air of mystery — and, to me, a sense of dread (恐惧). I thought he was a bad guy (坏人). As the train disappeared into the tunnel (隧道), I was left standing on the platform, fearful and helpless.
Wiping away tears, I quickly turned to the platform for help. My voice trembled as I struggled to convey what had happened. With all that done, I was waiting anxiously.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly one of my students shouted, “Look! Kate has returned!”

The idea that the man was a bad person was wrong.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Suddenly one of my students shouted, “Look! Kate has returned!” I raised my head, and to my great relief, there stood my little girl, safe and sound. Overwhelmed with emotion, I rushed to Kate and hugged her tightly, tears streaming down my face. Then I noticed the man in a black jacket standing a few steps behind my daughter. Kate explained that the man had witnessed what happened and immediately stepped in to help. He had comforted her, guided her off the train at the next stop, and brought her back on a returning train to reunite with me.
The idea that the man was a bad person was wrong. I was flooded with gratitude and regret. Before I could properly thank him, however, the man quietly walked away, disappearing into the crowd. I wished I could find him to express how deeply his kindness had impacted me. The experience left a lasting impression on me. Not only had the man saved my daughter, but he had also taught me a valuable lesson about not judging others based on their appearance.三校联考2025年春季学期高一年级第二次月考
