Reading body language is not an easy task. It can be challenging because interpreting the signs that another person reveals requires considering individual differences. In this sense, it can be compared to a doctor assessing a patient’s condition. Considering the whole picture is also key to reading people’s body language accurately. For example, when lying, some people avoid eye contact. By comparison, others may maintain eye contact even longer than usual. Moreover, body language differs in various cultures, and it is appropriate to “do in Rome as the Romans do”. For example, the gesture for “OK” in many cultures can be perceived as “money” in Japan or “zero” in France. By contrast, employing such a gesture in Brazil or Germany is rude and can anger people! Of course, some body language is shared by all cultures. For instance, people have a tendency to say “Goodbye” by waving hand while seeing friends off, and smiling often gets people through difficult situations and break down barriers.
