Poetry probably had its origins in traditional folk music tens of thousands of years ago. In that era, as writing had not been invented, people would sit around and sing songs to convey feelings. These songs reflected themes, ranging from hunting animals or sowing crops to the joys and sorrows of life. Since nothing was written down, over the years different versions of these songs developed, and each area would have its own respective rhythm. In addition, people would recite stories of past heroes. As these stories were often quite long, they often had rhymes and rhythm to make them easy to recite. While in the beginning such songs and stories had a very simple format, over time they became more complicated and more polished. These were no longer the works of amateur sitting around, but works of true poets who tried to get every syllable of their poems delicate and to the point.
