When you walk along the towpaths lining London’s 100-mile network of canals, a life on the water can appear idyllic. The boats dotting the winding banks look impossibly charming, romantic and colorful. Even better, they’re cheap to acquire compared with buying a conventional land-based house or apartment in the city.
“It’s so peaceful here,” said David Ros, who has been living on the London waterways for 15 years. “I wake up in the morning and open the side door looking out over the river, and the ducks are waiting for me to feed them. It’s a really nice way to live.”
He bought his current houseboat six years ago for £30,000. Dating from 1940, it has an open kitchen, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and a double bedroom. It’s a nice setup, if a bit crowded.
Mr. Ros says he’ll never live on dry land again, as he prefers being surrounded by nature. But the reality is, he probably couldn’t afford a place he wanted. Home prices remain out of reach for many in London, with an average sale price of about £508,000, a 50 percent increase over the past decade. Meanwhile, a two-bedroom houseboat will now run you around £190,000.
The option is almost too appealing—a new wave of residential boaters is stretching London’s canal support system past its limits. Boaters have been living on Britain’s canals since the industrial revolution. But according to the Canal & River Trust, which looks after the nation’s waterways system, the number of residential boats in London has ballooned by 86 percent over the past decade, to more than 4,000.
With all the new boats on the water, even this affordable living option is becoming less attainable. Mr. Ros’s winter coal supply costs £22 per bag, and he needs at least 20 bags for the season. Prices for diesel and gas are also up about 50 percent, and the basic price of a boat license is rising.
1.What does the underlined word “idyllic” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Appealing and disturbing. B. Simple and graceful.
C. Fashionable and romantic. D. Pleasant and peaceful.
2.What does David Ros think of his boat
A. Old-fashioned. B. Far from satisfactory.
C. Well designed. D. Spacious.
3.Why does the author mention the Canal & River Trust
A. To show the affordability of houseboats. B. To make a convincing comparison.
C. To trace the history of houseboats. D. To confirm the present situation.
4.Why is a houseboat becoming less affordable
A. Living on a boat takes more coal and gas for fuel.
B. Overall expenses of living on a boat are on the rise.
C. The canals are filling up with residential boats.
D. Land-based house prices are continuously increasing.

A housewarming party is a special party to be held when someone buys or moves into a new apartment or house. The person who bought the house or moved is the one who throws the party. The party is a chance for friends and family to congratulate the person on the new home. 1 And it is a good time to fill the new space with love and hopefully presents.
2 Some people register a list of things they want or need for their new home at a local store or stores. Some common things people will put on a gift registry include kitchen tools like knives and things like curtains. Even if there isn’t a registry, a good housewarming gift is something to decorate the new house with, like a piece of art or a plant.
3 This is often appreciated since at a housewarming there isn’t a lot of food served. There are usually no planned activities like games at a housewarming party. The host or hostess of the party will, however, probably give all the guests a tour of their new home. Sometimes, because a housewarming party happens shortly after a person moves into their new home, people may be asked to help unpack boxes. 4
Housewarming parties get their name from the fact that a long time ago people would actually bring firewood to a new home as a gift. 5 Now most homes have central heating and don’t use fires to keep warm.
A. This isn’t usual though.
B. It is traditional to bring a gift to a housewarming party.
C. You can also bring food or drinks to share with the other guests.
D. If you’re lucky enough to receive gifts, keep them in a safe place.
E. It also gives people a chance to see what the new home looks like.
F. The best housewarming parties encourage old friends to get together.
G. This was so that the person could keep their home warm for the winter.

由下文提到的对点缀在蜿蜒的河堤的船的描述: look impossibly charming, romantic and colorful (迷人、浪漫、色彩绚烂)和下文David Ros的话“It’s so peaceful here”可推出, 沿着运河散步, 应该是发现水上的生活是平静祥和、充满诗意的, 故D项中的pleasant and peaceful (宜人宁静)正确。
由第三段中的“It’s a nice setup, if a bit crowded.

1.E 根据空前的 “The party is a chance for friends and family ...”和空后的 “it is a good time to fill the new space...”
3.C 根据设空处后一句中的 “since ... there isn’t a lot of food served (温居聚会上可供应的食物不多)”可推知,设空处应与温居聚会上的食物有关。
