Nothing screamed freedom for me as a kid like green rubber boots. Each winter meant new boots for my little brother and me. Sometimes they were Christmas presents, but more often they were simply necessities for two boys who took their job of getting dirty very seriously and whose feet grew like they stepped in fertilizer(肥料) each night.
Depending on the model, they might have long yellow laces(鞋带) all the way up the front and a strip of yellow rubber around the top. Sometimes we got the common slip-on kind, but I liked the lace-up type better. I loved threading those laces in and out and in and out and then fastened them down tight at the top to lock the legs of my overalls or jeans in place. You couldn’t maintain the wavy effect with the slip-on kind, so you couldn’t look like a British soldier for very long with those.
The only drawback to the laces was that over time the plastic tip would wear off and the laces would be worn out. Then threading them through the eyes got to be a chore—especially when some weeds or insects would grab hold of the ends and make a sticky mess.
Getting boots at the store was nice, but nothing was better than getting boots in a wrapped-up box. The best ones have a pretty lid and open like a treasure chest. Sometimes a big sticker with a picture of the boots greeted us from under the wrapped paper. But every time, raising the lid released a sweet smell of rubbery goodness.
I loved the smooth inside of the boot, and moving my toes in it. There was always plenty of space for growing feet. Then came the important walk around the room and up and down the hall, booming along on the hardwood floor. Best of all was the bang of the back door, the clumping down steps, and the heavy, thunderous thunk, thunk across the yard to the nearest hole of mud and freedom.
24. What does “stepped in fertilizer” in paragraph 1 imply about the brothers
A. Their feet grew rapidly. B. They liked to play in the fertilizer.
C. They deliberately damaged their boots. D. Their shoes were often covered in mud.
25. Why did the author prefer lace-up boots
A. Longer durability. B. Extra space for growth.
C. Visual effect on clothing. D. Easier outdoor movement.
26. How does the author view the laces’ drawback
A. Disappointing. B. Insignificant. C. Regrettable. D. Confusing.
27. Where is the passage most probably taken from
A. A children’s storybook. B. A personal recollection.
C. Customer feedback. D. A history textbook.

New research indicates that physical activity lowers cardiovascular (心血管的) disease risk in part by reducing stress-related signals in the brain.
In the study, which was led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), people with stress-related conditions such as depression experienced the most cardiovascular benefits from physical activity.
To assess the mechanisms (机制) underlying the psychological and cardiovascular disease benefits of physical activity, Ahmed Tawakol, MD, an investigator and cardiologist in the Cardiovascular Imaging Research Center at MGH, and his colleagues analyzed medical records and other information of 50,359 participants from the Mass General Brigham Biobank who completed a physical activity survey. A subset of 774 participants also underwent brain imaging tests and measurements of stress-related brain activity.
Over a median follow-up of 10 years, 12.9% of participants developed cardiovascular disease. Participants who met physical activity recommendations had a 23% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared with those not meeting these recommendations. Individuals with higher levels of physical activity also tended to have lower stress-related brain activity.
Significantly, reductions in stress-related brain activity were driven by gains in function in the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮质), a part of the brain involved in executive (执行的) function (i.e. decision making and impulse control). It is known to control stress centers of the brain.
As an extension of this finding, the researchers found in a group of 50,359 participants that the cardiovascular benefit of exercise was substantially greater among participants who would be expected to have higher stress-related brain activity, such as those with pre-existing depression.
Analyses accounted for other lifestyle variables and risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Moreover, reductions in stress-related brain signals partially accounted for physical activity’s cardiovascular benefit.
“Physical activity was roughly twice as effective in lowering cardiovascular disease risk among those with depression. Effects on the brain’s stress-related activity may explain this novel observation,” said Tawakol, who is the senior author of the study.
28. Why did the research group analyze medical data of the participants
To find out how exercise lowers cardiovascular risk.
To evaluate the impact of cardiovascular disease.
To examine the impacts of cardiovascular disease.
To test how much physical activity the participants needed.
How may physical activity lower cardiovascular disease risk
By promoting function of the brain.
By controlling stress centers of the brain.
By decreasing stress-related brain activity.
By reducing executive function of the brain.
What advice may Tawakol give
To work out regularly. B. To eat healthily.
To be in a good mood. D. To avoid cardiovascular disease.
In which section may the text appear in a newspaper
Mind and learning. B. Matter and energy.
Science and society. D. Health and medicine.

ChatGPT appears to have better “bedside manners” than some doctors—at least when their written advice is rated for quality and empathy (同理心), a study has shown.
The study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, used data from social news website Reddit’s Ask Docs forum, in which members can post medical questions answered by verified healthcare professionals. The team randomly sampled 195 exchanges from Ask Docs where a verified doctor responded to a public question. The original questions were then posed to the AI language model ChatGPT, which was asked to respond. Finally, a panel of three licensed healthcare professionals, who did not know whether the response came from a human physician or ChatGPT, rated the answers for quality and empathy.
Overall, the panel preferred ChatGPT’s answers to those given by a human 79 percent of the time. ChatGPT responses were also rated good or very good quality 79 percent of the time, compared with 22 percent of doctors’ responses, and 45 percent of the ChatGPT answers were rated empathic or very empathic compared with just 5 percent of doctors’ replies.
Christopher Longhurst, of UC San Diego Health, said:“These results suggest that tools like ChatGPT can efficiently draft high-quality, personalized medical advice for review by clinicians, and we are beginning that process at UCSD Health.”
Professor James Davenport, of the University of Bath, who was not involved in the research, said: “The paper does not say that ChatGPT can replace doctors, but does, quite reasonably, call for further research into whether and how ChatGPT can assist physicians in response generation.”
Some noted that, given ChatGPT was specifically designed to be likable, it was not surprising that it wrote texts that came across as empathic. It also tended to give longer, chattier answers than human doctors, which could have played a role in its higher ratings. Others cautioned against relying on language models for factual information due to their tendency to generate made-up “facts”.
What does the underlined word “verified” in paragraph 2 mean
dedicated. B. licensed. C. intelligent. D. enthusiastic.
What is the percentage difference in empathy ratings between doctors’ responses and ChatGPT’s responses
A. 17 percent. B. 40 percent. C. 57 percent. D. 74 percent.
34. What’s Professor Davenport’s view regarding the paper’s proposal for additional investigation into ChatGPT’s support for physicians
Objective. B. Indifferent. C. Unconcerned. D. Disapproving.
What concern was raised about using ChatGPT
A. Its responses might be one-sided. B. It fails to give empathic responses.
C. It may produce unreliable information. D. It is unable to offer high-quality advice.

Ten-year-old Riley Christensen and her mother, Lynn, were sitting in front of the family computer, checking out models and prices of bikes. “Let’s pick one out for your birthday,” Lynn suggested to her daughter. The air in the room was filled with excitement as they scrolled through various options, envisioning the joy when Riley cycled around the neighborhood. They laughed together, exploring the features of each bike, and discussing colors.
As Riley scrolled down the home page of the Bike Rack, a shop in their town of St. Charles, Illinois, a video link for Project Mobility caught her eye. She clicked on it out of curiosity, unaware that this simple click would unfold a profound story of compassion and sympathy. The video clip began to narrate the inspiring journey of Bike Rack co-owner Hal Honeyman. Through it, Lynn and Riley were transported into the world of Project Mobility, witnessing how Hal Honeyman had transformed a passion for biking into an organization dedicated to providing specially engineered bicycles for those facing physical challenges. The video footage (镜头) painted a vivid picture of the positive impact these adapted bikes had on individuals — accident victims, injured veterans (老兵), and children with disabilities, including Hal’s own son, who had been born with cerebral palsy (脑瘫).
“I don’t want a bike for myself. I’m going to buy a bike for one of those kids,” Riley told her mother. Two days later, she showed Lynn a letter she had written asking for donations. “I think it’s amazing for a guy to make bikes for kids who can’t walk,” the letter said. “I saw how happy a boy was when he got one... I’m writing to ask for your help.”
Lynn was blown away by her daughter’s effort, but doubts quickly emerged. The cost of just one of those special bikes could be as high as $4,000. Riley could never raise the money.

Dear David,
I’m writing to share a plan with you. As graduation approaches, our class intends to give a meaningful gift to our school, and I’d like to get your opinions.
After heated discussions, we’ve come up with two ideas. One option is to donate a collection of classic literature, aiming to enrich the school library and inspire the younger students’ love for reading. Another proposal is to plant a memorial tree on campus, symbolizing our eternal bond with the school. This tree would grow alongside future generations of students, bearing witness to their growth.
I’m eager to hear your thoughts. Which idea do you think is more appealing Or do you have any other creative suggestions Your advice would be invaluable to us. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. It was a picture of the pumpkin we had carved together. Underneath, Brian had written, “My first real win with my brother. Even if we didn’t get first, it was a victory because we worked as a team.” Seeing those words, a wave of guilt washed over me. I remembered how I had selfishly taken all the money and lied to him. I realized how much I had let him down. I turned to Brian, ready to confess everything.
Paragraph 2:
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything ” I was shocked. Brian just smiled gently and said, “I always knew. But I also knew that you needed that game more than the money at that time. And I was proud of our teamwork, not the prize. I hoped one day you’d understand the real meaning of winning together.” His words made me feel even more ashamed. I apologized sincerely, vowing to make it up to him. From then on, I truly understood my role as his guardian angel and the importance of true brotherhood.
