When is a shed (小屋) more than just a building When it’s a potentially life-saving
shelter for men who are struggling. That’s the idea around which the Men’s Sheds movement
— led by the UK Men’s Sheds Association (UKMSA) is designed.
While garden sheds are typically used by individuals for personal projects and the
activities there are often done alone, Men’s Sheds are all about social connections and
friendship building, as well as sharing skills and knowledge. “We know how well the
movement helps with loneliness, social isolation (孤立) and both physical and mental health,”
said Rob Lloyd, the UKMSA spokesperson.
Last year, the national finalists in the 2024 Shed of the Year awards were announced,
recognizing the groups and individuals that have helped fight loneliness that year. Among the
groups is the Shrewsbury Men’s Shed. Simon Rouse, its chairman, talked about their
approach: “We’ve been trying to combine two things: capable men who have health problems
with challenges that make them realize they are still alive and have a lot to offer.”
He explained that local charities and community groups have long lists of jobs they
would love to do but can’t afford. “Our Men’s Shed has well-equipped workshops and skilled
men with time on their hands and worries they might want to park for a while,” said Rouse.
“If we put the two together, it’s a win for the men, their families, the local charities and
community groups. Our members have enjoyed supporting our local community through a
variety of things, including repairing electrical equipment, and building a reading tree as well
as play equipment for local schools.”
Rouse said that these men once thought the best was over for them, but now winning the
award would be a rich reward for their years’ effort. “Now we’ll really see what we’re capable

of,” he said. “The award would give our members another fantastic encouragement for them
to continue to spread the word about the value of Men’s Sheds.”
4. What is the main goal of the Men’s Sheds movement
A. To finish personal projects.
B. To help men with social and health challenges.
C. To help improve men’s problem-solving skills.
D. To let more people know about charity organizations
5. How does the Shrewsbury Men’s Shed help struggling men
A. By funding local charities.
B. By upgrading their workshops.
C. By providing medical assistance.
D. By involving them in voluntary tasks.
6. Why is winning the award significant for the shed members according to Rouse
A. It increased their earnings.
B. It ensured them of more work chances.
C. It changed their opinions of themselves.
D. It improved their well-being and fame.
7. What is the best title for the text

Weighted blankets are filled with small glass balls, cotton or other fillings. This makes
them heavier than usual blankets. As temperatures drop, a weighted blanket can be a popular
choice to help you keep warm. Some people say the extra pressure of the cover also helps to
ease their worries and make them fall asleep faster.
Scientists may not know exactly how the blankets work, but they have a few ideas. The
heavy and even feeling from a weighted blanket may calm the brain’s fight-or-flight response.
The evenly distributed weight on you tells your body you are in a calm environment. The
extra pressure may also cause the brain to release the hormone oxytocin (催产素), sometimes
called the “love hormone”, which the body creates during loving moments, such as hugging.
Experts suggest that for the majority of healthy adults, the weight of the blanket they
select should be about 10 percent of their body weight. However, the blankets are not good
for everyone. For example, some people may find them too hot to use, especially during
warmer weather. People with breathing problems or disorders such as sleeplessness should
check with a doctor before using a weighted blanket. Do not use weighted blankets for
children under three years old. The weight can limit their movement and breathing.
There is little scientific research on whether weighted blankets help with sleep, anxiety,
or other health issues. The studies that exist involve small groups of people. And most of the
study subjects are people with conditions including sleep problems, long-term pain, and
mental and developmental disorders. So, there is not much scientific evidence to support
health improvement claims about weighted blankets.
Dr. Daniel Barone is a sleep medicine expert at Weill Comell Medicine in New York City.
He suggests the use of weighted blankets to his patients after they try other traditional
treatments and medicines.
“If it doesn’t hurt and it may help, it’s worth a shot,” he said.
8. Why do some people choose weighted blankets
第 7页/共 47页
A. To stay warm or reduce anxiety. B. To cure sleeplessness completely.
C. To replace traditional medicines. D. To speed up the flow of blood.
9. What is the disadvantage of weighted blankets
A. They have a bad smell. B. They are for heavy people only.
C. They may cause breathing issues. D. They are expensive for most
people.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The wide application of weighted blankets.
B. Problems with the research on weighted blankets’ benefits.
C. Details of ongoing research on weighted blankets.
D. The process of scientific research on weighted blankets.
11. What does Dr. Barone’s statement “it’s worth a shot” mean
A. It’s too risky to try. B. It’s not necessary to try.
C. It deserves trying. D. It will definitely work.

At a conference last week, I received an interesting piece of advice: “Assume you are
wrong.” The advice came from Brian Nosek, a fellow psychology professor. He wasn’t
objecting to any particular claim I’d made — he was offering a strategy for pursuing better
science, and for encouraging others to do the same.
To understand the context for Nosek’s advice, we need to take a step back — to the
nature of science itself. Despite what many of us learned in elementary school, there is no
single scientific method. Just as scientific theories change, so do scientific methods.
Assuming you are right might be a motivating force, sustaining the enormous effort that
第 8页/共 47页
conducting scientific work requires. But it also makes it easy to interpret criticisms as
personal attacks, and for scientific arguments to develop into personal battles. Beginning,
instead, from the assumption you are wrong, a criticism is easier to be viewed as a helpful
pointer, a constructive suggestion for how to be less wrong — a goal that your critic probably
shares.
Nosek’s advice may sound pessimistic, but it’s not so foreign to science. Philosophers of
science sometimes refer to the “pessimistic meta-induction (元归纳)” on the history of
science: All of our past scientific theories have been wrong, so surely our current theories will
turn out to be wrong, too. That doesn’t mean we haven’t made progress, but it does indicate
that there is always room for improvement—ways to be less wrong.
I like the advice because it builds in an awareness of our limitations and a readiness to
accept the unknown (“there are things I do not know!”) along with a sense that we can do
better (“there are things I do not know yet!”). It also builds in a sense of community — we’re
all in the same boat when it comes to falling short of getting things right. Perhaps the focus on
a shared goal — our goal as scientists and humans of being less wrong — can help make up
for any harm in scientific motivation or communication.
12. Why did Nosek send the advice
A. To express opinions about my claims. B. To remind me to be open to
criticism.
C. To encourage me to take up science. D. To better my understanding of
psychology.
13. How does assuming you are wrong help
A. It motivates scientists to make efforts. B. It addresses personal attacks and
conflicts.
C. It sets a constructive improvement goal. D. It contributes to a deeper insight
into yourself.
第 9页/共 47页
14. What does the author think of science theories
A. Dynamic. B. Testable. C. Pioneering. D.
Well-established.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Accept the Unknown B. Aim to Be Less Wrong
C. Get Engaged in Psychology D. Dig into the Nature of Science

Tomato Changed My Life
第 14页/共 47页
Doing things-without being planned was never my strength.
As a 14-year-old, I would refuse to go for walks around the block with my friends if I
was the least bit behind in my schoolwork.
Unlike most teenagers, I lived not in my room, but in an unused kitchen upstairs where I
spread my books and papers on a large round table. I spent considerable time there, working
continuously for hours, and my mother worried. She would try to lure (引诱) me away.
“Come and watch the parade!” she would call from downstairs. “All neighbors are out there!”
She thought of all kinds of tricks-the swimming pool, ice cream, stray cats and turtles-to
remove me from my -studies, but nothing ever worked.
Later, in college, the pattern continued. The library and my college dorm replaced the
unused kitchen at home. When spring came along friends would stop by my dorm or peer into
my library room to persuade me to play Frisbee on the lawn. “No, I would almost always say.”
I have too much to do.
My college study days were gone, but not my need and love for schedules. My friends
and sisters tried to keep me away from my plans, but they were hardly ever successful.
This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my
plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden
lured me out of my tightly scheduled world. They drew me with the power of a lover’s gaze.
Hundreds of them were turning ripe and red by the minute, decorating the garden like
decorations on a Christmas tree.
“If I have time , I’ll make tomato sauce (番茄酱).” I told myself. But my long week in
the house by myself was already filled with things to do: writing, and finishing a project that I
brought home from the office.
Then, watching the fascinating tomatoes continuously falling to the ground in
ever-greater numbers, again I mentally argued about all the things I had planned and needed
to do.

第 22页/共 47页

And most of the
study subjects are people with conditions including sleep problems, long-term pain, and
第 25页/共 47页
mental and developmental disorders.

Assuming you are right might be a motivating force, sustaining the enormous effort that
conducting scientific work requires.
I like the advice because it builds in an awareness of our limitations and a readiness to
第 28页/共 47页
accept the unknown (“there are things I do not know!”) along with a sense that we can do
better (“there are things I do not know yet!”). It also builds in a sense of community — we’re
all in the same boat when it comes to falling short of getting things right. Perhaps the focus on
a shared goal — our goal as scientists and humans of being less wrong — can help make up
for any harm in scientific motivation or communication.
12. Why did Nosek send the advice
A. To express opinions about my claims. B. To remind me to be open to
criticism.
C. To encourage me to take up science. D. To better my understanding of
psychology.
13. How does assuming you are wrong help
A. It motivates scientists to make efforts. B. It addresses personal attacks and
conflicts.
C. It sets a constructive improvement goal. D. It contributes to a deeper insight
into yourself.
14. What does the author think of science theories
A. Dynamic. B. Testable. C. Pioneering. D.
Well-established.

how to be less wrong—a goal that your critic probably shares.(相反,从你错了的假设开始,

Learning that you are conducting a survey about students’ difficulties in English
extracurricular reading, I’m writing to share my thoughts.
Personally, there exist some common difficulties among students such as lack of suitable
reading materials, little spare time after class and heavy academic pressure from exams. To
address these, I suggest teachers recommend proper reading materials according to students’

Tomato Changed My Life
Doing things-without being planned was never my strength.
第 44页/共 47页
This summer, though, while house sitting for my parents, I was persuaded to change my
plans in the most unexpected way. The sight of tomatoes growing in my mother’s garden
lured me out of my tightly scheduled world
