The toucan (巨嘴鸟) is a colourful bird. Take a look at these facts about the toucan, and you may learn something you didn’t know before!
Toucans live in the forests of South America. Their home is in danger. It is advised not to buy rainforest wood and to make sure toucans have their habitat.
Toucans have a black body about 24 inches long. They have a colourful beak (鸟喙). It is 1/3 as long as the bird’s body. It may look very big, but thankfully, for the toucans their beaks are not too heavy.
Toucans use their beaks to peel (剥皮) and eat different kinds of fruit, which is the kind of food they eat most often. Sometimes toucans will choose insects or the eggs of other birds to eat. Toucans get most of their water from the fruit they eat, so they don’t need too much water.

New research has found that just like natural engineers, wild horses are good at digging wells (挖井) in deserts (沙漠) which provide valuable drinking water. This helps other animals too, as black bears and American badgers (獾) have been found drinking at the wells.
A team of researchers from Australia, Denmark and the US set up far-away cameras at four places in deserts in the US. Wild horses had used their feet to dig wells two meters deep at these places, so they could reach water under dry riverbeds and small rivers. The cameras were used to watch the places and were set to record whenever an animal walked by.
The scientists saw many horses moving around, but they were most interested in which other animals came to drink at the wells. Over three summers, beginning in 2015, the team saw 57 kinds of other large animals visiting the wells, including wild cats and deer. The team also found that the wells gave water to desert plants.
Researcher Erick Lundgren, from Aarhus University in Denmark, described the wild horses as “natural engineers”—animals that change the environment around them. Perhaps the best known natural engineers are beavers (河狸). Beavers cut down trees with their teeth, creating space in woods where sunlight can reach smaller plants and allow them to grow. Then beavers use the wood to build walls across rivers, which help clean pollution in water and protect their homes.
More than 12,000 years ago, several kinds of horse-related animals lived in North America but they all died out (灭绝). Today’s wild horses develop from animals that were brought to America by humans in the past few hundred years.
