It was then that I noticed for the very first time that the boy could not see: he was blind. I felt a strong sense of guilt when I learnt it. Ashamed and moved, I reached for the flower, my hand trembling. Tears shone like the sun as I thanked him for picking the very best flower. “You’re welcome,” he smiled, and then ran off to play, not realizing the impact he’d had on my day. Though blind, he had brought light to me, a self-pitying woman, who was accustomed to looking at the cracks of life, unable to live the moment. Indeed, life is tough and cruel, but the boy never lost the power to sense the beauty of everything. And generously, he was offering me the power.
For all of those times I myself had been blind towards the world around me. Depression is a horrible state, which would ruin my energy, took me away from the experiences and people I love, and left me feeling sick and unhappy. Having learned from the boy, I came to realize that the daily life is actually an opportunity to understand beauty. The beauty of life is in its shades of light and dark, heartbreak and healing, joy and sadness, laughter and tears. All I need to do is to see everything with my heart.
