What is a GPA
A GPA, or Grade Point Average, typically ranging from one to four, is a number reflecting your course performance on average. It’s used by universities to determine whether students meet academic standards and by students to enhance job prospects or secure admission into post-graduate programmes.
Example: Academic Transcript of Jane Smith ● Winter 2023
Courses Letter Grade Grade points Credit hours Tota1 points GPA
Creative Writing A+ 4.0 3 12 -
Psychology A- 3.7 3 11.1 -
History B+ 3.3 3 9.9 -
Computer Science F 0.0 2 0 -
Total - - 11 33
How to calculate a GPA
● Determine the letter grade and the number of credit hours for each course you take in a term;
● Translate the letter grade to grade points using your school’s grading system;
● Multiply the grade points by the credit hours for that course;
● Add up all the credit hours for the courses;
● Divide the sum of total points by the total credit hours and you get the GPA.
What are the consequences of failing college courses
● Every failing grade (F) significantly impacts your GPA for that academic year, limiting clubs, organisations and programme choices, as competitive programmes require top GPAs.
● Most financial aid programmes require a specific GPA.A sharp drop in GPA due to several course failures may lead to removal from financial aid programmes, unless you retake the courses and pass.
21.What is Jane Smith’s GPA this term
A.3.3. B.3.0. C.2.8. D.1.0.
22.What would be a result if you get one F in college
A.School removal. B.Loss of financial aid.
C.Choice limitation. D.Disqualification from sports.
23.Where is this text probably taken from
A.A student handbook. B.A job fair poster.
C.An application form. D.A school schedule.
The famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, “I always do what I can’t do so that I can learn how to do it.” It strikes a chord with me because that’s exactly what I’ve done these years.
One of my earliest memories of doing before learning is of baking scones (烤饼) when I was about 10 years old. I wanted to bake them to surprise my mother when she returned home.
Before that I’d observed how my mother baked them many times. As I started to try, I didn’t know I shouldn’t handle the dough with my hands too much once I’d added the baking powder. However, I knew exactly how to roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter to cut the scones, because my mom had already taught me.
By the time my mom arrived home, the smell of freshly baked scones welcomed her into the kitchen. They were baked to golden brown perfection-flat, as a result of over handling the dough, but they tasted OK. My mom sweetly praised me for my attempt, rather than scolding me for the state of the kitchen, which was like a tornado had just blown!
Have my attempts always been successful I wish! Some of my kitchen disasters were of such proportions that even the dogs wanted nothing to do with them. My gardening failures didn’t live to see another season.
But my habit of doing before learning is still helpful. Whatever computer program or application I have to learn, I do so by simply starting to use it. I do, learn, and improve. So if you ask me whether I regret that I tend to do first and learn later, I’d say I don’t, because what I have discovered from those is the wisdom to know when it’s OK to do and then learn, and when it’s probably better to learn and then do!
24.What can we learn about the author’s first experience of baking scones
A.She practiced hard before actually trying.
B.She turned to her mom when necessary.
C.She wanted to perform better than her mom.
D.She managed to do it despite a little imperfection.
25.How did Mom respond to the author’s attempt
A.She made improvements to the scones.
B.She expressed her appreciation for the job.
C.She shared her first experience of baking.
D.She was surprised by the mess in the kitchen.
26.What does the author think of her practices of “doing before learning”
A.Most of them have ended up in failure.
B.They are just a barely usable method.
C.They contribute a lot to her self-improvement.
D.They only apply to the learning of specific skills.
27.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To stress the importance of keeping learning.
B.To show the benefits of doing before learning.
C.To encourage people to do something they can’t do.
D.To call on readers to change their way of learning.
The interplay between literature and scientific research has been evident throughout history. At a surface level, literature often anticipates future scientific developments, and science, in turn, provides a rich source of inspiration for literary creation. However, the interaction between these two goes beyond mere creativity; it invites deeper thoughts on the ethical (道德的) and philosophical impacts of technological advancements.
For instance, science fiction works like Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot play a direct role in shaping and inspiring the development of artificial intelligence (AI). This book pictures a future where robots coexist with humans and are governed by the “Three Laws of Robotics”. These laws not only influence the real-world AI research but also become a cornerstone in the debate surrounding AI ethics. These fictional laws provide more than just a blueprint for scientists; they serve as a bridge, making complex technological issues easier for the public to grasp.
Yet, the influence of literature on science extends even further. Take Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem as an example. The scientists in this fiction are not merely pioneers of scientific breakthroughs — they also represent the difficult choices and inner conflicts that humanity faces. Through their struggles, Liu presents a profound question: As science pushes us into new territory, are we truly prepared to bear the responsibility for the unforeseen impacts of technological advancements in the future
The true value of literature in relation to science is its ability to stir the pot. It not only question what we can achieve through science but also whether we should pursue these achievements. While science focuses on problem-solving and innovation, literature makes us consider the broader influence on nature and society, ensuring our progress is guided by wisdom, understanding, and humanity.
28.What do we know about I, Robot
A.It instructs scientists in detail. B.It boosts research on bridges.
C.It facilitates public access to science. D.It sets laws for robots in the real world.
29.Why does the author mention The Three-Body Problem
A.To point out the complexity of science.
B.To warn about the dangers of technology.
C.To show literature’s moral concerns about science.
D.To suggest literature’s direct influence on innovation.
30.What do the underlined words “stir the pot” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Explore and explain. B.Challenge and reflect.
C.Assume and examine. D.Educate and entertain.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Science: the Blueprint of Literature B.Science: a Whisper in Literature’s Ear
C.Literature: a Critical Insight into Science D.Literature: the Gateway to Scientific Ideas
Nearly 10 million people worldwide live with Parkinson’s disease. While Parkinson’s is incurable, some of its worst symptoms can be relieved and controlled using medications. A major problem of getting effective treatment at the right time is identifying the disease soon enough, before patients experience the symptoms brought on by irreversible (不可逆转的) neuron loss.
But scientists might have just the thing to change the situation. And it involves a nose. In a study published in the journal ACS Omega, researchers from Zhejiang University created an “e-nose”, a portable device that can detect body smells specific to Parkinson’s patients.
It may come as a surprise to learn Parkinson’s patients have their own smells. But after a retired nurse in Scotland made headlines in 2015 for a heightened sense of smell that led to her own husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis (诊断), scientists have been trying hard to create a device that could smell the disease before physical symptoms start to show.
Over the years, scientists have found people with Parkinson’s tend to produce more sebum than the average person. This sebum mixes with other overproduced substances to produce certain, unique smells.
To track down these smells, the Zhejiang University researchers swabbed (用拭子擦拭) the upper backs of 31 Parkinson’s patients and 32 healthy volunteers. Using machine-learning software, they were able to identify three smell compounds that healthy volunteers lacked. The researchers then tested the e-nose on sebum taken from 12 Parkinson’s patients and 12 healthy people. The device was found to be about 71 percent accurate in distinguishing healthy sebum from Parkinson’s sebum.
These are encouraging findings, but before the e-nose is ready for clinical use, the team needs to test it on many more people to improve the accuracy of the models. They will also need to test whether factors like race affect the e-nose’s performance in any way. But for now, as the number of people living with Parkinson’s in the U.S. is expected to rise to 1.2 million by 2030, a nose might be the best option to detect this disease.
32.What makes it difficult for Parkinson’s patients to get effective treatment
A.It’s not a curable disease medically. B.Its early signs are not easy to notice.
C.It involves irreversible neuron loss. D.Its medications are in short supply.
33.What did the Scottish nurse find
A.Her husband had a heightened sense of smell.
B.Her husband’s body gave off a strange smell.
C.A smell could relieve her husband’s Parkinson’s symptoms.
D.A smell caused her husband to suffer from a disease.
34.What will the researchers do concerning their invention
A.Refer to more academic articles. B.Create more lab models.
C.Conduct a broader test. D.Expand its market outside the U. S.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.People living with Parkinson’s are on the rise.
B.This e-nose can smell Parkinson’s.
C.Parkinson’s patients produce more sebum.
D.Researchers have found treatment for Parkinson’s.
Have you ever thought about pouring used cooking oil down the sink Just turn on the tap and flush (冲走) it all away. 36 Not only does this bad habit cause problems in your house, backyard, or neighborhood, but pouring such substances down the sink also creates widespread problems for the entire wastewater system and the workers responsible for its maintenance.
The smooth day-to-day operation of our wastewater collection and treatment relies on the cooperation of people to “do the right thing”. Many water management authorities across Australia are in broad agreement: Please don’t pour oils down the sink. They all offer advice on far better alternatives. But the water industry has no control over what we do in the privacy of our homes. 37
When still hot, oils are often liquid and can be easily poured away. But down in the sewer (下水道) pipes, they rapidly cool and solidify. 38 According to Western Australia’s Water Corporation, it is estimated that 30% of sewer blockages are due to oils.
39 Think about hair and so-called “flushable wipes”. They can build up over time, creating “fatbergs”: horrible masses of wipes, hair, hardened oils and other waste. Oils act as the glue that helps fatbergs build up at choke points in sewer systems.
There are more responsible ways of handling oils than just flushing them away. 40 Small amounts of cooking oil can safely be composted Even just pouring oils into the rubbish is better. But remember, you may need to cool hot oils down before putting them into the bin.
A.It is really up to us.
B.Please don’t do that.
C.Blocked sewers are bad for us.
D.Some engines can run on cooking oil.
E.This is a serious and common problem.
F.Cooking oil can actually be recycled and used to make biofuels.
G.Oils also cause trouble by combining with other flushed-away materials.

My heart beat faster and faster as I headed towards the door. In my head, I could hear the words my kids kept telling me, “Do it, Mom. You never do anything for yourself. Just follow your dream.”
“What are you doing here You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!” My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words.

根据第四段中“My mom sweetly praised me for my attempt, rather than scolding me for the state of the kitchen (妈妈亲切地表扬了我的尝试,并没有因为厨房的状况而责骂我)”可知,妈妈对作者的尝试表示赞赏。故选B项。
根据最后一段“But my habit of doing before learning is still helpful. Whatever computer program or application I have to learn, I do so by simply starting to use it. I do, learn, and improve. So if you ask me whether I regret that I tend to do first and learn later, I’d say I don’t, because what I have discovered from those is the wisdom to know when it’s OK to do and then learn, and when it’s probably better to learn and then do!(但我在学习前做的习惯仍然很有用。
由文章第一段“The famous Spanish painter Pablo Picasso once said, ‘I always do what I can’t do so that I can learn how to do it.’ It strikes a chord (引起共鸣) with me because that’s exactly what I’ve done these years.(西班牙著名画家巴勃罗·毕加索曾说过:‘我总是做我做不到的事,这样我才能学会做。’这句话引起了我的共鸣,因为这正是我这些年来所做的)”以及根据最后一段“But my habit of doing before learning is still helpful.

根据第二段“These fictional laws provide more than just a blueprint for scientists; they serve as a bridge, making complex technological issues easier for the public to grasp.(这些虚构的定律为科学家们提供的不仅仅是一个蓝图;它们还充当了一座桥梁,让公众更容易理解复杂的技术问题) 可知,这本书促进公众获取科学。故选C。
根据第三段“The scientists in this fiction are not merely pioneers of scientific breakthroughs — they also represent the difficult choices and inner conflicts that humanity faces. Through their struggles, Liu presents a profound question: As science pushes us into new territory, are we truly prepared to bear the responsibility for the unforeseen impacts of technological advancements in the future
根据划线词后文“It not only question what we can achieve through science but also whether we should pursue these achievements. While science focuses on problem-solving and innovation, literature makes us consider the broader influence on nature and society, ensuring our progress is guided by wisdom, understanding, and humanity.(它不仅质疑我们通过科学能够取得什么样的成就,还质疑我们是否应该追求这些成就。

由文章第一段中“A major problem of getting effective treatment at the right time is identifying the disease soon enough, before patients experience the symptoms brought on by irreversible (不可逆转的) neuron loss.
由文章第三段中“But after a retired nurse in Scotland made headlines in 2015 for a heightened sense of smell that led to her own husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis (诊断), scientists have been trying hard to create a device that could smell the disease before physical symptoms start to show.
由文章最后一段中“These are encouraging findings, but before the e-nose is ready for clinical use, the team needs to test it on many more people to improve the accuracy of the models.
通读全文,尤其是第二段中“In a study published in the journal ACS Omega, researchers from Zhejiang University created an “e-nose”, a portable device that can detect body smells specific to Parkinson’s patients. 因此,B项“This e-nose can smell Parkinson’s.

36.上文“Have you ever thought about pouring used cooking oil down the sink Just turn on the tap and flush it all away.(你有没有想过把用过的食用油倒进下水道? 提出了一个设想,即把用过的食用油倒进下水道里然后冲走,下文“Not only does this bad habit cause problems in your house, backyard, or neighborhood, but pouring such substances down the sink also creates widespread problems for the entire wastewater system and the workers responsible for its maintenance.(这种坏习惯不仅会给你的房子、后院或邻居带来问题,而且将这类物质倒入下水道还会给整个废水系统以及负责维护该系统的工作人员带来广泛的问题。)”
37.根据上文“But the water industry has no control over what we do in the privacy of our homes.(但水务行业无法控制我们在家中私密空间的行为。)” 故选A。
38.根据上文“When still hot, oils are often liquid and can be easily poured away. But down in the sewer pipes, they rapidly cool and solidify.(油在热的时候通常是液体,可以很容易地倒掉。
39.根据下文“Think about hair and so-called ‘flushable wipes’. They can build up over time, creating ‘fatbergs’: horrible masses of wipes, hair, hardened oils and other waste. Oils act as the glue that helps fatbergs build up at choke points in sewer systems.(想想头发和所谓的‘可冲洗湿巾’。
40.根据上文“There are more responsible ways of handling oils than just flushing them away.(处理油脂的方法有很多,比仅仅把它们冲走更负责任。)和下文“Small amounts of cooking oil can safely be composted. Even just pouring oils into the rubbish is better. But remember, you may need to cool hot oils down before putting them into the bin.(少量的食用油可以安全地堆肥。

根据倒数第三段中“I felt full of excitement and energy.
根据倒数第二段中“Walking back to my car, I remembered how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and had proudly watched them bravely perform in public.

根据第二段“ ‘What are you doing here You’re a single mom of five. You’re fifty years old!’ My thoughts were fighting with my kids’ words. 可知作者在报名课程之前内心充满了自我怀疑和纠结,她对自己作为五个孩子的单身母亲且已五十岁还要去追求梦想这件事感到不安,体现出她的焦虑和不自信;根据倒数第三段中“Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. ‘You are fine. I see so much potential in you,’ he told me. I felt full of excitement and energy. Before taking the class, she was worried/anxious and not confident. After she took the first class, she became confident. /She changed from being nervous and hesitant to being energetic and confident.
根据第一段中“In my head, I could hear the words my kids kept telling me, ‘Do it, Mom. You never do anything for yourself. Just follow your dream.’ 可知,孩子的这些话语不断在作者脑海中回响,成为她鼓起勇气报名课程的重要动力,鼓励她去追求自己的梦想及根据倒数第三段中“Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me for holding the sticks well and following along with him. ‘You are fine. I see so much potential in you,’ he told me. Because her kids encouraged her and the drum teacher praised her for her performance. /Because her kids and drum teacher gave her much support.
根据倒数第二段中“Walking back to my car, I remembered how many times I had driven my kids to their competitions and had proudly watched them bravely perform in public. Maybe one day I would have the chance to stand on the stage. 及最后一段“I started the car and couldn’t wait to go back home. She would share her experience/excitement/happiness with her kids in the class and continue to practice. /She would thank her children for encouraging her to follow her dream bravely.

70.Dear fellow students,
Recently it’s common to see some uncivilized practices on campus such as littering and wasting resources. I, on behalf of the Student Union, would like to call on everyone to contribute to an eco-friendly campus.
Firstly, we should make recycling as easy as possible. A simple way to do this is bearing garbage classification in mind, throwing different kinds of waste into different dustbins.
Secondly, conserve water, electricity and paper. For example, turn off the tap and the lights when not in use, and reuse used paper on the back, thus reducing waste of resources.
Let’s make the campus a greener place! Only through joint efforts can we achieve this goal.
The Student Union
