It was the scene from every parent’s worst nightmare when 8-year-old Rihaan was left lying in the middle of the road, with his bike bent beside him as the car that hit him stopped suddenly.
On hearing the loud bang, my husband, Ashish, ran down the drive way, picked his limped son up into his arms and carried him inside. Seeing Rihaan was bleeding badly from his head, legs and arms, my husband and I were both terrified he’d been seriously injured.
I called triple zero. But I was overcome with shock and struggling to speak. It was young Aarush, Rihaan’s brother, who took over the call, communicating key information to emergency services. Then, he quickly took clean towels to press on Rihaan’s wounds and stop the blood. When he noticed his brother’s eyes wide with fear and tears falling down his cheeks, he also tried to comfort him.
After a short time, an ambulane and the police arrived, and the professionals could take over from Aarush. Rihaan was rushed to hospital where scans showed he was concussed (脑震荡) but luckily had broken no bones.
“He’d been thrown 7 metres in the air.” Ashish recalled. “And wearing no helmet, he was very lucky the driver was not speeding. We don’t blame the driver, for it could have been anyone,” Ashish said.
With Rihaan recovering well, it meant the focus turned quickly to his brave brother. After the accident the operator who took Aarush’s call, Nick Smith, nominated (提名) him for a Junior Triple Zero award. As for Rihaan, who is back on the bike and always wears a helmet now, he agrees his brother was a hero. “But I’d quite like a modal too,” Rihaan, said cheerfully, “I suffered all the pain and then he got the award!”
24. What happened to Rihaan
A. He was hit by a car. B. He broke his arms.
C. He was trapped in a car. D. He fell off his bike.

Parents who force their children to have piano lessons are keeping them away from classical music, Lang Lang, a world-leading pianist, has suggested. The Chinese musician stresses that children who are forced into piano lessons can end up shunning music.
Lang Lang has launched an initiative (倡议) through his foundation (基金会) to put piano lessons into primary school schedules, so they are not just an after-school activity for the rich. The lessons, designed by professionals, can be taught by any teacher and the foundation has donated dozens of digital pianos to schools. The initiative uses tablets (平板电脑) and keyboards to get children playing right away, from Beethoven to Mozart.
Lang, who became famous in his mid-twenties, expressed his strong disagreement with the parents who forced their children to have piano lessons because “the neighbour’s kid does”. He said: “ Those parents don’t even know what music is. They get their kids to play without knowing what they are going to listen for.”
Lang said children had to be educated about classical music to truly enjoy it. “You really need to have a good childhood education in music. Take the reading of Shakespear as an example. If you don’t learn Shakespear in schools, you are less likely to pick it up later.”
The school initiative, Keys of Inspration, is running in 100 schools in America and 110 in China. And the UK programme has started in four primary schools in London. The initiative was created partly because arts education had been forced out in schools. Lang added: “When I came to America, the first day I realized few students in the high school knew Mozart. In the regular schools they just simply don’t have art and culture.”
28. What does the underlined word “shunning” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Avoiding. B. Appreciating.
C. Making. D. Performing.
29. Why did Lang Lang launch the initiative
A. To design piano lessons for teachers. B. To present pianos to primary schools.
C. To make his foundation more famous. D. To give more kids access to piano lessons.
30. How did Lang Lang stress the importance of a good childhood music education
A. By telling a story. B. By making a comparison.
C. By giving an example. D. By using an expert’s words.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Art lessons are fully valued in schools. B. Music schools have been started worldwide.
C. The lack of arts education is a global problem. D. Most Americans know nothing about Mozart.
D
A dropped bag of chips disturbed a cave ecosystem in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. This cave is almost cut off from the outside world, so introducing anything foreign can be harmful. “Things in the damp cave get wet quickly,” says park guide Ashley. The snack attracts tiny organisms (有机体), causing unwanted growth. Soon, small animals like crickets and spiders came to eat, spreading the pollution. Rangers (护林人) found the bad within hours. “But that can be all it takes.” Says Ashley. “I’m sure some crickets got a bit of the snack.”
Over 500 million people visit American public lands each year, creating many chances to harm wild places. “When you look at the numbers, it’s unbelievable,” says Watts, head of the Leave No Trace Center in Colorado, an organization aimed at minimizing human impact on nature.
Food waste takes a long time to break down, especially in certain areas. “It takes much longer for an apple core to rot in a desert than in a forest,” says Blye, a teacher at the University of Utah. Leaving waste leads animals to an unnatural diet and changes their behavior with sometimes terrible results. Bears who taste garbage and become a threat to humans may have to be put down. “Bears can get used to unnatural food in three weeks,” says Watts. “Everyone loses in this case.”
Biological waste is also problematic. Dog waste brings new bacteria into the ecosystem and scares away deer. Meanwhile, human waste and toilet paper introduces dangerous bacteria into water sources.
In national parks, trails (小路) are designed to avoid sensitive areas. Stepping off the trail, even for a quick photo, can scare wildlife away. Impacts from many visitors result in long-term damage to nature and wildlife. But people don’t think of that when they see the perfect photo opportunity. “It’s just such a hard thing to resist,” says Blye. The risk to sensitive ecosystems isn’t obvious. “It’s easy to think, oh, there’s wild flowers over there. I shouldn’t step on that,” says Blye, but these tiny ecosystems full of small organisms essential to desert life provide many benefits, including reducing the risk of erosion (侵蚀) and helping absorb rainfall, and can take hundreds of years to return to its original state.
32. What does Ashley mean by “But that can be all it takes.”
A. The rangers’ work is efficient. B. The damage has been done.
C. The cleanup takes a long time. D. The pollution has spread widely.
33. What is a result of foreign waste in public lands
A. A change in animal behavior. B. A lack of food supplies.
C. A decrease in bactearial species. D. An increase in regional conflicts.
34. Why does the writer mention wildflowers in paragraph 5
A. To praise their benefits to desert life. B. To highlight our damage to ecosystems.
C. To stress their significance for photography. D. To show our unawareness of nature’s sensitivity.
35. What can we learn from this passage
A. We should encourage wildlife protection B. We should leave no trace in the wild
C. We should promote national park tourism D. We should save ecosystem from damage

In communication, one common mistake is to do too much. Simple messages work well. If the message isn’t clear, there’s no real value between speakers. Being clear and short is a great communicative skill. 36
Keep your audience in mind.
Your audience will be more interested when you talk about things that are important to them. 37 This can make them desire to understand and talk about the information.
