At my mother’s fiftieth birthday party, I finally held the legendary card standing for family toughness. The cheap card, featuring a ragged (破旧的) bag lady and the message “Here’s to another glorious (辉煌的) year”, bore handwritten marks from decades ago — a silent proof of the hardships Mom and Aunt Anna went through.
Mom’s life had been a gauntlet: a bad first marriage, the struggle of raising five sons alone, and a painful separation from her grandson when grandparents’ rights were unrecognized. Aunt Anna faced darkness while waiting for Uncle Aaron’s return from a faraway war, their shared faith mirroring Mom’s fight against hopelessness.
From the mid-1900s on, in moments of hopelessness — when bills piled high and hope died away — they held onto the card like trapped souls grasped a piece of floating wood. Each Christmas, they mailed it back and forth, messy messages of dark humor serving as battle cries for surviving another year. The tradition ended when Mom remarried, and Anna preserved the card in plastic, noting it belonged to Mom. This weathered card was their constant life preserver through storms.
As a child, I’d never grasped their sacrifices (牺牲) — how they skipped meals to feed us, or Mom’s “diet” excuses while wasting away. Yet Mom’s solid belief that things would work out was matched only by her quiet toughness.
Decades later, the card’s worn edges told a story of sisterhood. Across the room at the party, Anna and Aaron laughed, while my stepfather Edward, the man who restored Mom’s joy, hosted guests warmly. On the wall hung my brother Jay’s photo, beside a flag and a picture of his son, who reunited with us in 2020 — a promise fulfilled.
This unlikely symbol of hope proved that glory lies not in ease, but in the love that ties us. The ragged bag lady’s weary smile, paired with their annual tradition, taught me that “another glorious year” is not a wish for perfection, but a victory of spirit: proof that even in darkness, family and faith turn survival into something special.
4. What does the underlined word “gauntlet” refer to in paragraph 2
A. A shiny mirror. B. A shared faith.
C. A tough journey. D. A recognized right.
5. What can be learnt about Mom and Aunt Anna
A. They enjoyed a glorious life. B. They fought in a faraway war.
C. They overcame difficulties bravely. D. They exchanged cards on birthdays.
6. What does the card between Mom and Aunt Anna mean
A. Their simple reminder. B. Their joyful present.
C. Their holiday decoration. D. Their survival symbol.
7 What’s the best title for the text
A. The Glorious Year B. The Card of Hope
C. Mom’s Tough Life D. The Ragged Bag Lady

Proper nutrition is crucial for improving athletic performance, supporting recovery, and overall health. Now, a new study from the University of South Australia reveals that it is also key to reducing the risk of injury, especially for females.
A systematic review of nearly 6,000 adult distance runners explored the link between diet and exercise-related injuries. It found female runners with lower energy and fat intakes faced higher injury risks, who consumed 450 fewer calories and 20g less fat daily than uninjured peers (同龄人). Additionally, the study also found that a low-fibre diet increased the likelihood of bone stress injuries in both female and male runners, with both injured female and male runners having three grams less fibre in their diet per day compared to those who remained injury-free. Interestingly, runners’ intakes of protein, alcohol, and calcium (钙) did not influence injury risk.
Sports dietitian and UniSA researcher, Erin Colebatch, emphasizes that nutrition plays a crucial role in reducing injury risk. “Distance running is a popular activity for many people, helping them stay healthy and keep fit. Yet about 50% of adult runners sustain running-related injuries,” Colebatch says. “Nutrition is key to improving athletic performance, providing the energy, recovery support, and injury prevention needed to maintain both endurance (忍耐力) and overall health. Many long-distance runners underestimate their energy needs. When they don’t fuel their bodies properly, they increase their injury risk. Recognizing the impact of diet on injury risk helps reduce it.”
Senior researcher, UniSA’s Dr. Alison Hill, adds that clinicians need to support female runners to achieve sufficient energy and fat intakes while guiding all runners to improve their fibre consumption. “When runners don’t consume enough energy, their body’s needs go unmet, which over time can lead to issues like loss of Lean Body Mass, tiredness, and bone breaks,” Dr. Hill says. “While this research offers valuable insights for runners of all levels, additional studies are necessary to explore how these findings apply to a broader range of athletic abilities.”
8. What does the study find according to paragraph 2
A. Protein impacts injury possibility.
B. Calcium lessens injury probability.
C. Limited energy harms male runners.
D. Low fat intake is risky for female runners.
9. What can we infer about running with less energy from Erin Colebatch’s words
A. It boosts athletic performance. B. It raises the injury likelihood.
C. It improves energy recovery. D. It reduces diet-injury link.
10. What will the follow-up study focus on
A. Supporting female runners' diets. B. Guiding fibre consumption ways.
C. Increasing energy intake levels. D. Applying findings to more athletes.
11. Which column of a newspaper is the text probably taken from
A. Entertainment. B. Fashion. C. Wellness. D. Culture.

VR games like Beat Saber and Space Pirate Trainer usually require large and dramatic movements, such as raising one’s arms above the head or quickly side-stepping, which can be difficult or impossible for people who use wheelchairs or have limited mobility (移动性). To decrease these barriers, the researchers created MotionBlocks, a tool that lets users customize (定制) the game’s controls to fit the movements they can do.
VR games are not only fun experiences but also serve as vital social spaces, especially for younger generations. However, there is still room for improvement in certain aspects. Johann Wentzel, the lead researcher and a recent Computer Science PhD graduate, has emphasized that “VR technology relies on a lot of large movements, which creates a barrier for people who can’t complete them. As soon as you have an application that isn’t accessible to everyone, you’re functionally leaving out people with disabilities from these social spaces.”
In the research, 10 individuals with mobility limitations were first invited to play VR games, sharing their challenges and suggesting solutions. Based on their feedback (反馈), the team developed MotionBlocks, a tool that customizes VR controller inputs in 3D space. “It’s a bit like how traditional video games allow you to remap your controls, but our method is much more adjustable and works in 3D space,” explained Dr. Daniel Vogel, a professor at Waterloo.
Then users set possible movements and link them to game actions like Beat Saber’s swings. MotionBlocks translates these into the required 3D motions, bridging the gap for accessible VR.
Finally, the researchers tested MotionBlocks together with the ten participants. The feedback was decisively positive, with users reporting greater enjoyment, less tiredness, and a feeling that something was finally designed for people with disabilities.
The researchers have no current plans to sell or release MotionBlocks. Instead, they hope it will serve as a proof-of-concept for the VR industry. “I’d like to see a motion accessibility feature like this integrated into every VR system on the market,” Wentzel said. “Everyone deserves to be able to access VR in a way that works for their needs.”
12. Why are Beat Saber and Space Pirate Trainer mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To list popular VR games. B. To introduce game features.
C. To compare movement types. D. To show shortcomings of VR games.
13. What is Johann Wentzel’s attitude to VR games according to paragraph 2
A. Indifferent. B. Dismissive. C. Critical. D. Supportive.
14. What do we know about the research
A. Data collection was a lengthy process.
B. All participants gave positive feedback.
C. The results were far from satisfactory.
D. The research unfolded in two phases.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The vision of researchers.
B. A limitation of the research findings.
C. A suggestion for industry integration.
D. The current sales plans for MotionBlocks.

In today’s rapidly advancing technological landscape, the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has caused widespread debate and concern. ____16____ However, a closer look reveals a more delicate perspective. Just as previous technological advancements have coexisted with human capabilities, AI is not a threat to fundamental skills but rather a transformative tool.
____17____ Just as calculators did not end math skills and typing did not eliminate (消除) handwriting, AI does not signal the end of reading and writing or of education in general. Elementary school teacher Shannon Morris says AI tools like ChatGPT answer questions, and provide personalized content for students based on their interests. ____18____ Moreover, AI simplifies teachers’ tasks like grading and creating vocabulary lists.
Similarly, AI enhances efficiency for professionals. ____19____ AI can handle tasks like scheduling meetings, sorting emails, prioritizing daily tasks, and managing social media content. This frees up time for more meaningful and rewarding work. The technology can also help with brainstorming, understanding difficult concepts, finding errors in code, and learning languages via conversation, making complex tasks more manageable.
As Carri Spector of the Stanford Graduate School of Education puts it, “I think AI knowledge is similar to driver’s education: We’ve got a powerful tool that can be a great benefit, but it can also be dangerous. We want students to learn how to use it responsibly.” In reality, understanding and practicing the responsible application of AI isn’t merely an option; it’s an essential requirement. ____20____
A. They also help with studying and research.
B. When it comes to students, AI aids learning.

Deep within the forest, where the paths turned like ancient tales, lay a secret village. Its existence was known only to the creatures that called it home. Among them were four extraordinary friends: Ollie, whose calls carried the weight of centuries; Benny, whose strength could move mountains; Rosie, who could disappear in a flash of white fur; and Rascal, always ready to turn over a new stone in search of adventure. Tied by a shared belief in the power of unity, they were about to start a journey that would test their bond.
One day, the animals were gathered around a campfire, discussing their latest adventure. They had just returned from a journey to the other side of the forest, where they had discovered a hidden treasure collection. It had been a dangerous journey, but they had worked together to overcome every barrier. As they sat around the fire, Ollie spoke up. “My friends,” he said, “we have proven time and time again that we are stronger together than we are alone. But I fear that we have become self-satisfied. We must continue to challenge ourselves and work together if we are to achieve great things.”
The other animals nodded in agreement, and they began to brainstorm ideas for their next adventure. After much discussion, they decided to explore a mysterious cave that was said to be filled with treasure. The journey to the cave was long and dangerous. They had to cross a wild river, climb a high mountain, and find their way through a thick forest. But they worked together, using each other’s strengths to overcome every barrier.
When they finally reached the cave, they were amazed by what they saw. The walls were lined with shining jewels and precious metals. But as they began to gather the treasure, they heard a loud thundering sound. Suddenly, the ground began to shake, and the walls of the cave started to break. The animals realized that they had caused a trap, and they had to escape quickly if they wanted to survive.

【答案】Dear Chris,
How’s everything going I’m writing to share an exciting event with you. Our school organized a one-month “Exploring Historical and Cultural Knowledge” activity to deepen students’ understanding of history cultivate critical thinking, and promote traditional Chinese culture.
During the event, we attended fascinating lectures by historians, engaged in lively group discussions, and visited local museums. We also participated in a historical knowledge quiz, where teams competed to answer questions about China’s rich past.
This activity not only broadened my historical horizons but also made me appreciate the depth of Chinese culture.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】Teamwork was the key to their survival in the dangerous cave. Each animal played a crucial role. Benny used his strength to move heavy rocks, paving the way; Rosie ran through narrow passages with incredible speed; Rascal's sharp wits helped uncover hidden exits; and Ollie guided them through the complex cave with wisdom. As they fled, they knew unity was their lifeline. They shouted warnings about approaching threats, shared safe routes, and supported one another through exhaustion and fear, never leaving anyone behind. Finally, they managed to burst out of the cave, breathing heavily for air and completely exhausted, but still alive.
They collapsed on the ground, laughing and crying with relief. From that day forward, the animals understood that by working together, they could achieve anything. This newfound strength became their guiding principle. They fearlessly took on adventure after adventure, tackling dangers and overcoming problems as a united team. Their bond grew stronger with each challenge they faced, and they found happiness in the assurance that they could always count on one another, no matter what lay ahead.
