In my early childhood, I was often surprised when I saw my father making only a little money with difficulty. Being a child, I was unable to understand him. When I was older, my father started doing a part-time job at home. He used to bring some work back and work till late.
My father taught me how to read when I was five. He took care of me all night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He also cared about my lessons and often helped me get ready for exams. Later he sent me to New Delhi for the best education. Whenever I needed money, he never said no. He always tried to collect money for my studies.
Two years ago, I got a job at a hospital in New Delhi. When I helped my first patient, I got a strong feeling of satisfaction. When I got my first salary (薪水), I spent it all on myself.
When I returned home one evening, I heard my father talking with one neighbour. He was very proud to tell him about my job. He also told him that I had a higher salary than him. A dream that his son should become better than himself came true.
I was unable to move. The past 23 years came into my mind in a moment. I knew that my father loved me very much. I could understand the meaning of my father’s wish. It’s common that parents and children disagree with each other. That’s what we call conflicts (冲突). Some of the conflicts are easy to end. Others may need parents to help. To someone’s surprise, by solving them together, family conflicts can help children learn important life skills.
Some simple childhood games show how conflict and repair work. For example, in peek-a-boo (躲猫猫), a baby might feel a little unhappy and worried when he can’t see his parent. But when the parent returns, everything is OK. As children grow older, they play games like hide and seek. There are small moments of upset followed by great fun and joy. These games help children prepare for all kinds of problems in the future.
As children grow up, they develop their life skills by working through conflicts. When a conflict is too serious for a child, parents may step in (介入). To set a good example, parents could try to remain cool first — don’t be too excited or angry. Next, they can say some kind and nice things to make children feel better. Then they can have a face-to-face communication. This helps them rebuild the love and trust for each other. In this way, children learn that sometimes things go wrong. But if they deal with them properly, they can always rebuild healthy and strong relationships with others. A healthy process (过程) of going through conflict and repair with their parents promises children’s happiness and social success in the future.
43. Why are family conflicts helpful according to Paragraph 1
A.Because they can help parents learn.
B.Because they can teach children skills.
C.Because they can solve parents’ problems.
D.Because they can bring family to an agreement.
44. The writer tells us the conflict and repair work by ________ in Paragraph 2.
A.telling stories B.showing facts
C.listing numbers D.giving examples
45. According to the passage, parents ________ first when children can’t solve conflicts.
A.cool themselves down B.make children happy
C.say nice and kind words D.leave children alone
46. Which can be the best title for the passage
A.The Lessons in Daily Life B.The Life Skills in the Future
C.The Art of Conflict and Repair D.The Fun of Simple Games
C. Choose the best answer (根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案)(8 分)
New Year was coming. I told my mother that the only gift I wanted for the New Year was a Pogo Stick (弹簧单高跷). However, my mother said that they were so expensive that we couldn’t afford one.
On a Saturday before New Year, my family went shopping together. While my mother and I were picking out the gifts, my dad said, “I’ll be back soon. I need to see something in the tool area.” A moment later, he came back with a long box. I was wondering if there was a Pogo Stick in it.
When we arrived home, my dad put the box in the garage (车库). While my parents were busy with their housework, I quietly walked out to the garage and found the box. I was so happy because I thought as long as I opened that box, my bright Pogo Stick would appear! To my surprise, inside the box there was only an ugly old broom (扫帚).
On New Year morning, I got some nice gifts, but I didn’t get the present that I really wanted. After cleaning up the room after dinner, my dad went out. When he came back in, he was carrying a beautiful Pogo Stick. I couldn’t believe it! The Birthday Surprise
Fiona carefully counted her savings for the third time. Three months of pocket money, plus what she earned helping Aunt Mei water plants—just enough for the strawberry cake at Sunny Bakery. Her mother’s birthday was tomorrow, and she wanted to make it special.
The next afternoon, Fiona rushed home with the precious cake box held tightly in her arms. Rain began to fall as she ran, but she protected her package like a treasure. When she arrived, the house was quiet—her mother was still at the hospital working her nursing shift.
Fiona worked quickly. She set the cake on their small kitchen table, carefully placing five pink candles around the edges. She found their good plates (the ones with little flowers that Mom loved). Just as she lit the last candle, she heard someone knocking at the door.
“Surprise!” Fiona shouted as her mother stepped inside.
For a moment, her mother just stood there, rainwater dripping from her coat, staring at the flickering candles. Then her tired eyes filled with tears. “You... you remembered it was my birthday ”
Fiona ran to hug her. “Of course! You always make my birthdays special. This year I wanted to do the same for you.”
As they shared the cake—the sweet strawberries mixing with the salty tears on their cheeks—Fiona understood something important. The best gifts were the ones that said “I see you” and “I love you” without any words at all.
That night, as her mother kissed her goodnight, she whispered, “This was the happiest birthday ever.” And Fiona knew it was true, because her own heart had never felt so full.

Dear Bill,
How time flies! I miss you so much. Last summer, I visited many cities in China. I’d like to tell you something about my travel experiences.
I first went to Shanghai and visited Disneyland. The parade with Disney characters was magical, and I felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Then I traveled to Hangzhou and rowed a boat on the West Lake. The peaceful water and surrounding hills made me forget all stress. Finally, I toured Beijing’s Palace Museum. Walking through ancient palaces, I was amazed by China’s rich history.
This trip not only broadened my horizons but also let me appreciate the beauty of different cultures. I hope you can visit these places too!
Best wishes!
Li Hua
