Outside an art museum in Topeka, Kansas, some kids are playing happily in what looks like a large Hobbit House while others are walking through the house’s archway into a twisted twig (细枝) tower. The tower, made entirely of sticks, is a sculpture built by Patrick Dougherty.
Dougherty has created more than 200 stick sculptures all over the world. “I design my sculptures to look like they’ve always been there,” he says. And he likes people to get involved in his work. If they arrive during the three weeks he takes to build a sculpture, he lets them build, too. “I want my work to help people enjoy nature.”
As a child, Dougherty learned to love nature while traveling through the woods. He would spend hours bending sticks into shelters for his brothers and sisters. When he grew up, he majored in art and learnt to make sculptures with clay. But it was too heavy to make the lines and shapes he imagined.
One day, he watched thin, young trees waving in the wind. They reminded him of the sticks he built shelters with as a boy. Soon after, he began his first creation made out of sticks.
To begin a sculpture, Dougherty digs holes and buries tall young trees in the ground for support. Then he weaves smaller sticks around them. He uses strings to hold and bend the twigs while he’s weaving. When he removes the string, the sticks stay in place. It usually takes four tons of sticks to build a sculpture, and Dougherty chooses materials that would otherwise be wasted.
Dougherty’s sculptures last two to four years. But even after that, they serve a purpose. The wood is cut up into tiny pieces called mulch, which makes soil rich and helps new plants grow after it breaks down.
4. What does the description of kids playing in paragraph 1 function as
A. A vivid lead-in to the sculptor. B. A clear display of the sculpture.
C. A brief introduction to the museum. D. A lively advertisement of the artistic work.
5. What can we infer about Dougherty from the text
A. He is likely to waste tons of sticks and other materials.
B. He is devoted to the construction of all kinds of sculptures.
C. He likes using twigs to replace the sticks before weaving them.
D. He likes to invite visitors to build sculptures together with him.
6. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Soil. B. Wood. C. Mulch. D. Architecture.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A natural art museum B. A friendly competitor
C. Protecting the environment D. Bending sticks into sculptures
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. C 7. D

Many of us like to dine out and treat ourselves to delicious food. Among the top choices are hearty dishes with high-fat meat, despite the fact that they may be unhealthy. Plant-based food, however, gives diners a smarter choice. According to a report, two popular chains announced they were introducing items featuring meat substitutes (替代品) in China.
“It advances our goal of bringing plant-based protein to the world,” said Ethan Brown, chief executive of Beyond Meat.
The plant-based meat substitute has been popular in the US and the UK for years and offers meat-lovers a healthy alternative to an otherwise unhealthy eating habit.
Despite the negative impacts on our health, the attractive taste and convenience of fast food have made it a popular choice across the world for decades. But with the introduction of the plant-based food, it’s likely that fast food won’t be considered “junk food” any more, as the calorie intake (热量摄取) for typical fast food items will be reduced. The meat substitute also provides rich protein and different nutrition.
Another factor contributing to the product’s popularity is a new group of environmentally-aware consumers. On average producing 1 kilogram of meat sends out 36. 4 kilograms of carbon dioxide. With such a high carbon emission, many environmentalists choose to cut down on the intake of meat, making the plant-based diet characterized by environmental protection a popular choice.
Introduced at the end of April in 2020, plant-based food seemed to come at a time when increased animal-human interactions are blamed for COVID-19. Therefore, the introduction of meatless dishes means a safer choice for consumers.
Without doubt, the newcomers on the Chinese table represent a change in people’s eating habits that are heading toward healthy, environmentally-friendly and less animal-human interaction.
8. What is implied in the first paragraph
A. People’s tendency to eat healthily. B. The popularity of unhealthy eating.
C. People’s addiction to plant-based meat. D. The charm of delicious food.
9. What can we learn about plant-based food
A. It has negative impacts on our health. B. It is nutritious but low in calories.
C. It produces few greenhouse gases. D. It prevents disease transmission.
10. What can be inferred about the plant-based meat substitute
A. It has gone on sale worldwide. B. It might be badly accepted in China.
C. It’s expected to be promising in China. D. It’ll raise the public’s environmental awareness.
11. What does the text mainly talk about
A. The characteristics of healthy food. B. The popularity of plant-based food.
C. Types of common plant-based food. D. The advantages of plant-based food.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. C 11. D

Whether foreign or familiar, movies can have great influence on our lives. A recent study by researchers from Ohio State University found that meaningful films can actually help us handle life’s challenges.
Lead researcher Jared Ott and his colleagues made two lists of 20 films made after 1985. One list contained films described by users of the movie website IMDb using words such as meaningful and inspiring — including films like Hotel Rwanda and Up. Films included in the second list were considered less meaningful, like Ratatouille and Fight Club.
The study included 1,098 participants of different ages who were hired online. Individuals were randomly selected to receive one of the two lists and then were asked to identify which movies they’d seen. They then were asked to respond to a survey regarding one of the films they’d seen. The survey questions are about how you feel about the film, how it matched your values and how it might have shifted what you think of lived experience. The results showed that participants who discussed meaningful movies were more likely to say the film helped them understand difficulties in life. These participants also felt more encouraged to help others.
Researchers owe these positive effects to the more meaningful films’ emotional range, mixture of happiness and sadness and their ability to inspire viewers. “They help make people realize that life often involves both joy and gains, as well as sorrow and losses, and that the very coexistence of such elements is often what provides meaning in our lives,” Ott says. “It makes sense that a focus on more universal themes of what it means to be human might resonate (共鸣) with people in a more long-lasting way.”
While a causal relationship between meaningful films and positive psychological well-being can’t necessarily be established through this research Ott points out that film is a readily available resource that can possibly help individuals achieve a greater sense of self.
12. How can Hotel Rwanda benefit movie-goers according to the study
A. By enriching their daily life. B. By improving their life skills.
C. By helping them to live happily. D. By enabling them to be kind.
13. What were the participants asked to report in the study
A. How they deal with difficulties in life. B. What causes their confusion about a film.
C. How a film impacts their views on life. D. Why a film makes them feel encouraged.
14. What is the purpose of Jared Ott’s words in paragraph 4
A. To evaluate the research. B. To explain the findings.
C. To share his opinions on films. D. To stress the importance of films.
15. What might be the best title for the text
A. Meaningful movies are easily available nowadays
B. Film is a medium where people can gain guidance
C. Researchers confirm the advantages of seeing films
D. Meaningful movies help deal with life’s challenges
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. D

Languages disappear for many reasons. Sometimes younger generations stop learning a language because parents want children to fit in with new environment. ___16___ Native American children of the late-19th century were required to attend boarding schools where educators forbade them from speaking their native languages.
The United Nations ranks endangered languages according to their risk level. For example a “critically endangered” language is one that even grandparents don’t speak often. New York’s Onondaga language is an example with only 50 speakers left. An “extinct” language has no speakers. It is gone forever. Alaska’s Eyak language is one example. ___17___
Different languages contribute to cultural diversity. ___18___ Languages can show how a society looks at the world and what it values. A language may describe something in a way that is funny, too. In Welsh, it rains not cats and dogs, but old wives and walking sticks.
The Endangered Language Alliance wants to save languages from disappearing. ___19___ However, its efforts are limited. If an endangered language is going to make a real comeback, it’ll probably get its start in schools. For nearly 100 years, public schools in Hawaii did not teach the Hawaiian language. Now students can keep learning in Hawaiian from elementary schools to college and beyond.
___20___ At least one did. In 1881, a Jewish linguist named Eliezer Ben-Yehuda brought the 3,000-year-old language Hebrew back to life. Today it is one of the official languages of the country of Israel, with more than 4 million speakers.
A. The last person who spoke it died in 2008.
B. Why should we save endangered languages
C. With just 5 speakers left, it is absolutely endangered.
D. Saving these languages helps us understand other cultures.
E. Can a language with zero native speakers come back to life
F. Sometimes societies force minorities to give up their language.
G. The nonprofit group finds native speakers and records their stories.
【答案】16. F 17. A 18. D 19. G 20. E

【答案】May 15th, Sunny
Dear Diary
Our school held the annual “Science & Technology Day” yesterday and I found it to be a hugely rewarding experience. Activities included technological knowledge quizzes, student research exhibitions and advanced technologies lectures. My classmates and I really enjoyed it all and deeply appreciated the efforts of the organizers.
I took part in the “create your own robot” competition, which was a great learning opportunity. The hand-on experience really helped me to better understand the theory behind robotics.
Thanks to the festival, I have a much clearer understanding of technology and its applications than before. It has motivated me to focus on science as a career, and hopefully make a meaningful contribution to our society.
I can’t wait for the next festival.
第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kristie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there ” She glared at me—something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off for the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him, Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment.

After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. He pulled up my skirt and skillfully tied the drawstring with a beautiful knot. Seeing what Henry did for me, something deep in my mind began to change. It seemed as if my cold heart began to melt slowly and my annoyance at him gradually gave way to guilt. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thanks,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. Without his knotting skill, the performance would have been quite different. “KNOT a problem. You are my sister,” he grinned innocently, saying humorously. Surrounded by the cheerful atmosphere, I felt a flood of warmth of a big family. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a new person in my corner of the world after all.2023—2024年度高二年级下学期期末考试模拟卷

第二节 (满分25分)
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
