But this summer, we will add two more weeks. By the end of the six-week course, they’re really good and hearing them play is what gives me the most pleasure.
W: So, how do you find the young musicians
M: We advertise on the Internet. Anyone between the ages of sixteen and twenty can complete the application form and email it to us, along with a short recording of their playing. The course is in English, so a basic level of spoken language is necessary.
W: And at the end of the course, there’s a concert tour.
M: That’s right. I book concert halls and work out the programmes months in advance. Ticket prices aren’t high, and lots of people buy them. We don’t make a profit. We just take enough money to pay for the students’ travel and living expenses abroad. It’s a fantastic experience for them.

Thick smoke nearly covered the sky in Altadena, California, as Gail watched flames swallow her next-door neighbor’s house. Each ember (火星) carried by the powerful wind could lead to the burning of her home — and all she can do is watch.
Although she made several calls to 911, Gail said that obviously they were very busy. Several fires broke out around Los Angeles. As flames spread to Gail’s property, burning down her garage, community members came to help.
Volunteers have grabbed water hoses and are trying desperately to keep the flames at bay by watering Gail’s roof and yard. But as the wind shifts, a terrible reality sets in.
“Though I’m happy that my house is standing right now, I don’t have a lot of hope,” she admits.
The wildfires in Los Angeles County together consumed thousands of acres in just over a day. To the west, the Palisades Fire is already among the most destructive fires in California’s history — and none of it has been contained. But even as the fires rage (肆虐), stories of heroism are beginning to emerge.
Thousands of local firefighters and first responders are trying to contain the flames and evacuate residents—even as their own homes were burned down. Working under immense heat and thick smoke, some firefighters and first responders are pulling 48-hour shifts, battling the flames and evacuating residents and protecting lives.
As the fires burn throughout Los Angeles County — and edge closer to historic Hollywood symbols — the National Guard has been called together to help with the response to the fires.
“This is a tragic (悲剧的) time in our history here in Los Angeles, but a time when we’re really tested and see who we really are,” Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said to the guards.
As the Eaton Fire advanced on homes, police officers went door to door to evacuate people, including elderly residents and people with mobility limitations. “They saved many, many lives in the last 22 hours.” said McDonnell. “Their efforts were heroic.”
24. What happened after Gail dialed 911
A. Several fires were controlled. B. No firefighters came to help.
C. Fire spread to volunteers’ houses. D. Her neighbor’s house was rescued.
25. Why did the author quote Gail’s words
A. To express Gail’s excitement.
B. To prove she was a grateful person.
C. To indicate the seriousness of the city fire.
D. To show the community members were helpful.
26. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 6
A. The result of the fire. B. Firefighters’ routine.
C. Some heroic behaviors. D. Methods of putting out fire.
27. How did Jim McDonnell’s words sound

Meg Locker,28, didn’t realize that she was spending a lot of time and money on shopping. Last January, while cleaning, she tried to check how many bottles of face and body lotion (润肤乳) she had and was shocked to see how many unopened products there were. “It’s terrifying,” she says. “It wasn’t until it was all piled up that I was like, ‘I could literally go years without needing to buy something.’”
Like many people in their 20s, Locker was sold a lifestyle by social media content creators. This lifestyle populated by a wealth of products has become so normal on social media that many young people like Locker think they should try to replicate it — only to find their homes filled to the ceiling and their bank accounts emptied. But these trends are impacting more than just the space and finances of consumers: Overconsumption may be impacting our mental health.
Cathrine Jansson-Boyd, a professor of consumer psychology, explains that though we don’t personally know the content creators on social media, we still compare ourselves to them. This, in part, drives some of us to buy more things than we actually need, even if we don’t have the same lifestyle as the creators we follow online. We feel like we could become closer to them or feel better about our lives if we have similar clothes or something.
“It’s got to do with our self-worth sometimes,” Jansson-Boyd said. “We are very social creatures and we compare ourselves against others all the time. And the fact is that when we engage in this social comparison, we’re comparing upwards to someone we kind of think is, for whatever reason, superior to us.”
Locker admits that she used shopping to try and follow the example of influencers she admired to reduce negative feelings. She’d have a rough week at work and would spend time unwinding by heading to a department store. “Then before I know it, I’m spending $300, essentially on junk food,” she says.
28. What is the purpose of paragraph 1
A. To prove women’s purchasing power. B. To give an example of a new fashion.
C. To show a phenomenon among the young. D. To introduce the background of the story.
29. What does the underlined word “replicate” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Change. B. Adopt. C. Value. D. Popularize.
30. Which statement might Jansson-Boyd agree with
A. Most women consumers get joy from shopping online.
B. People tend to compare with the disadvantaged groups.
C. People always achieve their self-worth by comparing with others.
D. Social media content creators contribute to our overconsumption.
31. What change might happen to Locker
A. She will become a much wiser consumer.
B. She will release her stress by shopping online.
C. She will stop following those famous influencers.
D. She will increase the frequency to a department store.
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. A

Reporting in Proceedings Biological Sciences, researchers found that a species of branching coral (珊瑚) benefited from a reef-dwelling crab (寄居蟹), especially when the coral was heat-stressed and wounded. The findings support the idea that positive species interactions can reduce coral reefs from multiple environmental threats.
“Foundation species like corals create the base of an ecosystem: They form structures that other species use for shelter and provide food for other organisms. Learning how these species respond to stress can help us design better strategies to conserve them—and, in turn, other species that rely on them,” said first author Julianna Renzi.
For their study, Renzi and colleagues collected samples of a type of branching coral from a designated research area during a heat wave. They placed the coral samples in tanks fed with seawater and exposed them to one or a combination of treatments, including physical wounds, a harmful algae (藻) , and crabs. For each treatment, they measured coral tissue loss over the course of a month to measure coral health.
The team found that high water temperatures appeared to cause tissue loss in the coral samples. However, the amount of tissue loss varied depending on the experimental treatment. For example, the presence of algae increased the probability of significant tissue loss by six-fold compared to treatments without algae. By contrast, crab tankmates decreased the risk of major tissue loss by more than 60%compared to treatments without crabs.
Surprisingly, crabs seemed particularly beneficial to the wounded corals, which experienced less tissue loss than either uninjured corals exposed to crabs or injured corals without a crab. What’s more, coral wounds rarely grew when crabs were present but, in some cases, appeared to expand in the absence of crabs.
Further studies suggested that crabs avoided living coral tissue, instead feeding in areas of recent tissue loss. The team observed that wounded corals lost algae faster than uninjured corals. The finding suggests that crabs and other organisms might remove the algae—in effect, cleaning their habitat.
The team’s findings support an ecological concept that positive species interactions may be particularly important under environmental stress and could potentially contribute to some species’ resilience against stressors.
32. What did the researchers do in the experiment
A. They assessed the severity of the injured corals.
B. They tested the effect of climate change on corals.
C. They employed various ways to deal with coral samples.
D. They made a list of factors affecting the health of corals.
33. What does the author want to show in paragraph 4
A. Algae is the biggest threat to corals.
B. Water temperatures can benefit corals.
C. The tissue loss of corals happens anytime.
D. The treatment decides the corals’ injury degree.
34. What is the significance of the findings
A. They can contribute to coral preservation.
B. They can help to solve more puzzles of the sea.
C. They can partly settle the global warming problem.
D. They can improve the relationships between species.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Crabs Mainly Survive on Corals.
B. Coral Tissue Can Get Damaged Easily.
C. Species Compete against Each Other to Survive.
D. Heat-stressed Corals May Benefit from Coral-dwelling Crabs.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. D

The Cycles of Life
My mother took the container from my hands. Its leaves hung down the sides of the pot. For several months each year, the plant grew well, but in the winter months it would turn brown. For several years, Mom cared for it through the winter, rewarded with a revival of greenery each year in the early days of spring.
My mother’s health grew worse over the decade of the plant’s life. During a visit from Aunt Marion in late spring, when both the plant and my mom faced a difficult recovery, the plant changed hands again. Mom asked her sister if she could take care of the plant. Leaving Mom’s house with a pot of soil and the dried plant, Aunt Marion carried it home, determined to save it.
During that summer, the leaves broke through the soil, and the plant grew again. As before, each winter it withered (枯萎), to be renewed again in spring, starting with tiny shoots pushing through, developing tear-shaped leaves.
The plant cycled as it had done under my short care and my mother’s care until one spring when Aunt Marion thought it couldn’t survive and put it out with the trash. On a visit, my cousin Carole, seeing the plant on the rubbish, decided to give the determined plant one further chance. Carole took the container to her sunroom hoping she could do something with it.
In the years since I first brought the plant home, four women from the family have cared and nurtured it, each in her own time. During those years, I also cycled through times when life was lush and green and times when I felt there would be no restoration of my heart’s remains following difficult barren periods. A decade after my mother died, I moved over 500 miles from home, hoping for new beginnings. During the long winter months after the move, everything familiar was distant and I longed for the connections left behind.

【答案】One possible version:
The first June after the move, I returned for a visit and stayed with my cousin Carole. I was eager to see the family and friends I missed. One morning, as we shared coffee and conversation at Carole’s kitchen table, I commented on the beauty of the plant hanging in her kitchen window. I saw it! The tiny, dark green leaves spilled over the sides of the flowerpot. Carole told me that was my mother’s plant. I was shocked. Gone nearly twelve years, my mom returned to me in spirit on that soft spring morning.
My eyes were filled with tears as I examined this plant more closely, recognizing the tiny leaves. I thought of my mother and what she did to the plant. When I left, I took several cuttings. I carefully placed them in a small pot and watched them take root and grow. Eventually, they filled two large pots. The plant passed through the hands of my mother, my aunt and my cousin until it returned to me. It became a sweet reminder of the blessings we shared and how together we were rooted and grew through each other’s love and nurturing.
