After a long day at work, Yuan Hui, a volunteer teacher in a village in Enshi, Hubei province, decided to stay back in the office until late. This is the 10th year of his volunteer teaching career in the Countryside.
Located deep in the mountains, the village was struck by poverty. Despite all challenges, Yuan believes that it was a precious experience growing up among his students. “I did not come here on a whim. I love teaching from the bottom of my heart,” says Yuan, who teaches a variety of courses, including history, geography and music, in different primary and middle schools in Enshi.
“Since I was a high school student, I’ve dreamed of being a volunteer teacher. Different from the traditional teaching style, I feel there is another way, and I hope to have the opportunity to put my ideas into practice,” he says, adding that his teaching may have a greater impact on students living in mountain villages with limited education resources. “Spreading joy and knowledge among others makes me feel satisfied. Living in the woods, I seemed to have reached a deep understanding with nature, and discovered the essence of life,” he says.
When Yuan first started teaching, he visited every student’s family on the weekends. “Most of them were left-behind children, and some were from single-parent families,” says Yuan. He decided to help the children with their studies by developing good habits. “In such cases, it’s important to help them build up their confidence,” says Yuan. To achieve that goal, Yuan designed a lot of activity-based courses, encouraging children to express themselves more confidently. Yuan’s unique teaching methods became more popular in the county, and other schools invited him to deliver lectures. “I think I’m living a happy life,” he said in one of his lectures.
Over the past years, Yuan has won many national honors. “I think they are a result of my devotion. Only through devotion can one possess inner peace and joy,” he says.

Have you ever stepped into a restaurant or shop and been greeted by a seated cat figure with its paw(爪子) up in the air These cats, known as maneki-neko, are found all around the world, but are native to Japan.
In Japanese maneki means “beckoning”(招手示意) and neko means “cat”. Business owners place the cats in their shop entrances in the hope that the cats will bring in good luck, as well as paying customers. For this reason, English speakers often refer to them as “Lucky Cats” or “Welcoming Cats”.
To people from Western countries, the waving gesture looks like a “hello”, but in Japan and other Asian countries, an upright arm with fingers moving is a way to say, “Come here”. While the name maneki-neko implies this gesture, some historians believe the upright pa w shows that the cat is washing its face. This idea might have some truth in its gesture as an old Japanese belief says that a cat washing its face means a visitor is sure to arrive. An ancient Chinese tale supports this idea: “If a cat raises its pa w over the ears and washes its face, then clients will come.”
Whether a maneki-neko is washing its face or calling someone to approach, its paws indicate further clues to the fortune it might bring. When the right paw is raised, money is said to come, while the left pa w is believed to attract customers. The higher a cat’s paw is, the more fortune a cat is thought to bring.
Like Japan’s beloved Hello Kitty character, maneki-neko figures are modeled after a native cat called Japanese bobcats, known for their short tails. Because of an old tale, these cats have long been relevant to luck. According to the story, a monk(和尚) was sitting under a tree when his cat beckoned with his paw for the monk to come to him. Puzzled, the monk walked over to the cat. A large branch fell where the monk had just been seated.
12. Why do businessmen prefer placing a cat figure near the gate of shop
A. Because the cat means good fortune. B. Because the cat will pay customers’ bill.
C. Because the cat is more lovely than the dog. D. Because the cat is praised by English speakers.
13. What is the meaning of a cat putting the right pa w up
A. It implies washing its face. B. It waves goodbye to you.
C. It makes the client puzzled. D. It shows the road to wealth.
14. What can we learn about the maneki-neko figures
A. It has a long tail with luck. B. It is often seated under a tree.
C. It is based on native bobcats. D. It is more popular than Hello Kitty.
15. Which of the following is the best title of the text
A. A Cat and a Monk. B. A Cat with its Lucky Paws.
C. A Cat and its Friends Hello Kitty. D. A Cat with its Japanese Name.
