We find the owl at the very edge of our woods the morning after the storm. Wings flight-frozen and round eyes glassy. I touch its feathers lightly with my fingertip and I’m surprised because they still feel real even though the owl has slipped away somewhere else and Dad is already digging a hole for it in the rain-soaked earth.
I lift its body and it’s huge in my hands but the hollow bones do most of the work for me and I almost think the owl might shake the stiffness from its feathers and fly away. I really don’t think this one should go into a hole in the ground. I say that to Dad and he says that it’s the circle of life and that now the owl will become part of nature again. Feeding the soil with its flesh and growing the roots of plants from its feathers.
Dad shifts the last of the dirt with his spade and sits down at the base of a tree with a huff of air that smokes around him. I put the bird in the hole and mark it with a smooth pebble (鹅卵石) so I’ll always know.
After we’ve buried the owl, we walk all around the woods and clear the worst of the damage from the winds and the rain. The damage isn’t as bad as it’s been before and it feels like the storm has cleaned everything back to being new and fresh. I use my hawk eyes and search the ground in flicks and sweeps and I find treasures in the rain-raked earth just like always. Pieces of pottery and something that could be a Roman coin. I slip them into my pocket and they bump against each other to tell their stories to me, but I’ll listen later.
I help Dad load the best of the fallen branches on to the trailer so we can cut them for fire wood or maybe a bonfire, and then we drive over the muddy paths and back to our house.
4. What do we know about the owl when the author finds it
A. It is already dead. B. It is hidden in a hole.
C. It is to stiff to fly away. D. It is trying to flee the woods.
5. Why does the author mark the hole with a pebble
A. To make future visits convenient. B. To show sympathy for the owl.
C. To keep the site clear of plants. D. To draw the attention of passers-by.
6. What message does the author want to convey by mentioning the owl
A. Storms make trees take deeper roots. B. In nature’s embrace, time stands still.
C. The darkest hour has only sixty minutes. D. With every leaf’s fall, a new life rises.
7. What does “I’ll listen later” in paragraph 4 reveal about the author
A. Money-driven. B. Wonder-seeking.
C. Artistically talented. D. Emotionally sound.

Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted But it is more than just a topping for cakes or a sweetener for tea. It’s a miracle of sorts.
Honey is the only food product made by an insect that humans eat. Even with all our technical abilities, no one has figured out how to make artificial honey. There’s really no substitute (替代品).
A single pound of honey may require a beehive of up to 60,000 bees to visit two million flowers. No wonder some people call it liquid gold! Although amber-colored clover honey tends to be most common, honey comes in a variety of shades and flavors, depending on the flowers that the bees gather nectar (花蜜) from.
Honey has been used throughout history in a number of ways. One of the most remarkable things about it is that it never goes bad. It may crystallize, meaning that it becomes solid in parts, but simply warming it slightly will melt the crystals and return the honey to its liquid form.
No one knows exactly how long honey has been used by humans, but Spanish cave paintings dated at 7,000BC show early evidence of beckeeping. Honey was also used by the ancient Egyptians as a sweetener, as a gift to the gods, and even as an element used to create mummies. Honey has been found inside the Egyptian pyramids, and although that honey was more than 3,000 years old, it would still taste like honey and be safe to eat. No other food has such lasting power!
Besides its many uses as a sweetener, honey has long been used as a medicinal remedy (疗法). Because it’s difficult for any kind of bacteria (细菌) to survive in honey, it makes a perfect barrier on cuts and can prevent infection. Honey is also an effective remedy to relieve a painful throat. It has even been found to be as effective in easing coughs in children.
The next time a bee flies through your garden or you spread some honey on a piece of toast, think about the miracle of honey.
8. According to the passage, what makes honey unique among the foods that humans eat
A. Its various shades. B. Its natural creation.
C. Its delightful sweetness. D. Its remarkable history.
9. Why does the author mention the honey in the Egyptian pyramids
A. To illustrate that it never goes bad.
B. To show the cleverness of Egyptians.
C. To compare it with the honey in Spain.
D. To inform that it originates from Egypt.
10. What is one of the medicinal uses of honey
A. Promoting bacterial growth.
B. Curing throat pain.
C. Preventing infection in wounds.
D. Resisting common colds.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Honey: a Sweet Miracle of Nature
B. Honey: a Timeless Treasure
C. Honey: a Natural Medicinal Remedy
D. Honey: a Common Sweetener
D
In the 1930s, the first cake mixes (蛋糕粉) which only required water were invented and some people argued that this approach, the easiest, was the best. But others thought cooks would want to do more. The cake-mix argument may be out-dated, but its central question remains: Just how demanding do we want our technologies to be
Then what is a demanding technology Two elements are included: One is that it is technology that takes time to master, and the other is that its operation includes some real risk of failure.
Therefore, a piano is a demanding technology, as is a programming language or a machine system.
However, so-called easy technologies usually require little concentrated effort and produce predictable results. Clearly, easy technologies have remade human society over the past century, but the problem is that, as every individual task becomes easier, we demand much more of both ourselves and others. As a result, we are faced with a larger number of small tasks(writing hundreds of e-mails)instead of fewer difficult tasks (writing several long letters). And, when every task is easy, nearly all people are multitasking (多任务处理).
Easy technologies supposedly free us to focus on what matters, but sometimes what matters gets eliminated. Everyone knows that it is easier to drive to the top of a mountain than to hike; the views may be the same, but the feeling never is. Following the same idea, we develop into beings that can do more. However, we can’t get the same satisfaction as we expect.
I don’t mean that everything needs to be done the hard way. But we must take challenges seriously, or we’ll face the danger of becoming creatures whose lives are less satisfying.
12. What makes demanding technologies different from easy technologies
A. It requires much effort. B. It takes little attention.
C. It achieves intended effect. D. It deals with machines.
13. What is a possible result of easy technologies
A. More time for concentration. B. Writing much longer letters.
C Lower expectations on others. D. Doing various tasks at a time.
14. What does the underlined word “eliminated” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Noticed. B. Stressed. C. Improved. D. Removed.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage
A. The Argument Over Cake Mixes B. What Is A Demanding Technology
C. The Problem With Easy Technologies D. What Challenges Do Humans Face

That December morning, I decided to take Apple to pay a visit to my aunt. I’d had Apple only a couple of weeks, but we’d become nearly inseparable. I opened the car door. Apple jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I started the car and set off.
It’s always tricky turning around. I live in a remote area up in the hills, surrounded by woods. I have to drive up the mountain to get to my driveway, which is hardly wide enough for one car and ends at a steep (陡峭的) valley.
I twisted around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to cover my eyes. I felt a shake as the left rear (后部的) part of the car dropped. Oh, no! The car slipped and rolled. We landed upside down. I felt a sharp pain in my chest and my legs. I couldn’t move. I looked over to find Apple. She was still in the passenger seat and fortunately she was okay.
I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911. But just as I’d feared; there was no signal (信号) at the bottom of this valley. Now what Windy, my closest neighbor, lived a quarter mile uphill from me, and had her own driveway. It was unlikely that she or anyone else would drive up to my house.
Apple barked nervously. At least I could get her out of here. There was a hole in the driver’s side rear window. “Come on, Apple,” I said. Painfully, I reached over, picked her up and gently put her head through the hole. “Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley.
As the sun set, it turned cold. I trembled with cold and pain. Had Apple found her way home She hardly knew the area. My pulse (脉搏) was weakening. I closed my eyes. Suddenly I was awakened by loud barks.
