Book 3 Unit 4 Adversity and Courage

Good morning, honorable judges and teachers. Today I’m very honored to stand here sharing my lesson with you. My teaching presentation consists of 5 parts:they are Teaching philosophy, Teaching analysis, Teaching procedures , Blackboard design and Teaching reflection.
First of all, I designed this period of class following the direction of New English Curriculum Standards. In this book, I have learned many teaching theories, such as the theory of English Learning Activity, Core Competencies, and Big ideas of the whole unit, which guide me to design this lesson in a scientific way.
Then, let’s move to part 2 Teaching analysis. It consists of four parts: teaching material, students analysis, teaching objectives and teaching methods. The lesson is taken from the PEP Compulsory Book 2 unit 3 The Internet. The theme of this unit is Human and Society. The big idea of the whole unit is to deeply know the use and influence of the Internet, develop positive values towards it and pay attention to online safety.
Having analyzed all the texts of this unit, I made this form. In this form, we can clearly see the type, theme, content and objectives of each text, which helps me have a better understanding of the whole unit. I have also got the small idea of each period. According to it, I divide this unit into 7 periods and sort them into three big groups based on their functions in the whole unit. The lesson I’ll present is the second period of this unit. The type of this period is reading and thinking. It tells us a story of an unemployed old woman whose life has been greatly changed by the Internet. She was inspired and helped on the Internet, so she began to use the Internet to help others.
It aims to guide students to explore the use and influence of the Internet. It conveys that people can be changed and connected by the Internet and become stronger together. The passage is a narration. By analyzing the title and writing style, students can have a better understanding of the passage.
As for the students, they’re in Grade One. They are familiar with the Internet and are very interested in the topic. They’ve already had some knowledge of the Internet, and acquired some reading and thinking skills ,but their vocabulary is limited, so they lack confidence to get involved in class and still need to be guided to think deeply and develop positive values towards the Internet.
Based on the analysis of material and students, I sort out the Teaching objectives of the whole unit which still focus on improving students’ Core Competencies: Language competence, Thinking quality, Culture awareness and Learning ability. After analyzing the whole unite, the objectives of this period are much clearer. In this period, students will take part in a series of learning activities, in which they will have a better understand of the text, learn to predict the content and attitude by reading the title , be aware of the convenience and changes brought by the Internet and willing to help others through the Internet At last , they’ll reflect themselves and relate their own online experiences then make a presentation
As for teaching and learning methods, activity-based and situational teaching methods are adopted. Cooperative learning and Autonomous learning methods are applied.
Next, Let’s move to teaching procedures.
At the beginning of the class, I showed a short video of the Internet . All these tasked made good preparations for careful reading. In this section, students were guided to read the entries one by one. Each diary was accompanied with several questions to think about. The first question was the one that needed detailed information, while the others were relatively demanding. For example, ...these two question required students to analyse and infer based on details., which not only trained their reading ability but also the ability of thinking and analyzing. The second and the third diary entry were coped with in the same way.
After that, students were guided to make some summary on the whole according to the two lines: the story line and the feeling line. The story line could clearly present us with the development of the story, while the feeling line showed up the lead character’s feelings change in the story, which surely deepened students’ understanding of the story and paved way for the later section as well.
In order to examine learning effect and train students’ abilities of organizing language and expressing, Students were asked to work in groups and choose a diary to act it out. A sample was offered to help them. Students needed to design lines according to the story. This activity was fun and creative, which was popular among students.
After their performance, students were asked to reconsider the meaning of the title. They turely understood that failture meant that the expedition was a failure, but it was also a success because the captain Shackleton saved all the men and took them home due to their perseverance.
That’s what should be highlighted: the courage in the adversity. Therefore, at the end of lesson, students were reminded that No matter what kind of adversity we are faced with, we should always be full of courage and be perseverant, calm, positive, hopeful for the future.
After this lesson, I made timely reflection. Most of the objectives were achieved. But there were still two questions puzzling me: how to guide deeper and more efficient reading and how to motivate higher participation of each student. I will work hard on these problems and try to find proper solutions.
