Whenever I think of Ms. Anita Moore, I always smile and feel lucky to have her as my teacher. All of her students knew she loved being a teacher. Her classroom was always a safe place where we were encouraged to share, think, and express ourselves.
One of the memories that always stuck with me was a reading class when Ms. Moore read a story aloud and started to cry. The main character in the story reminded her of her grandmother. She stopped to share about her relationship with her grandmother and made the connection as to how that relationship helped understand the story.
Ms. Moore tried her best to make a connection with each student in her classroom. She knew what we liked and used that information to bring our interests into the classroom. That is one of the reasons why Ms. Moore will always be my favourite teacher. She brought various types of books to our classroom and allowed us to take them home. It was she that helped my love for reading grow.
Ms. Moore also went beyond classroom instruction. She decided that our school should have a choir(合唱团)and that all of her students should audition(试演). Without her, I would never have taken part in this type of after-school activity. Once it was time for the annual 5th grade weekend camping trip, my parents refused to let me attend. Ms. Moore came to my home to persuade(说服)them. Although I was still not allowed to go, it was amazing to me that a teacher would visit my home to help me be part of a school tradition with my classmates.
Ms. Moore was a wonderful example of a caring teacher. From her, I’ve learned to make connections with students and look for ways to help them learn and feel successful.
24. Why did Ms. Moore cry in the reading class
A. The story was too sad.
B. She was moved by the students.
C. She thought of her own grandmother.
D. She helped her students understand the story.
25. What can we learn about Ms. Moore from Paragraph 3
A. She was good at writing books.
B. She bought many books for poor students.
C. She inspired the writer’s love for reading.
D. She was the favourite teacher of the whole class.
26. Which of the following can best describe Ms. Moore
A. Positive and humorous. B. Responsible and caring.
C. Inspiring and strict. D. Knowledgeable and confident.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To express opinions on teaching literature.
B. To discuss how to become a caring teacher.
C. To introduce the classes and activities in her school.
D. To share her memory about her teacher, Ms. Moore.

A new attempt to predict earthquakes with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) has raised hopes that the technology could one day be used to limit earthquakes’ impact on lives and economies. Developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin, the AI algorithm correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week before they happened during a seven-month trial in China.
The AI was trained to find unusual patterns in real-time seismic data that researchers had paired with the data of previous earthquakes. The outcome was a weekly forecast in which the AI successfully predicted 14 earthquakes within about 200 miles of where it estimated they would happen and at almost exactly the calculated strength. It missed one earthquake and gave eight false warnings.
It’s not yet known if the same approach will work at other locations, but the effort is a significant achievement in research for AI-driven earthquake forecasting.
“Predicting earthquakes is the ultimate goal,” said a professor, who is a member of the research team. “We’re not yet close to making predictions for anywhere in the world, but what we achieved tells us that what we thought was an impossible problem is solvable in principle.”
The researchers said that their method had succeeded by following a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was given a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, then told to train itself on a five-year database of seismic recordings. Once trained, the AI gave its forecast by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes among the background rumblings in the Earth.
“Our future goal is to combine both physics and data-driven methods to create a generalized system that we can apply anywhere in the world,” said the AI’s lead developer. “The new research is an important step towards achieving that goal.”
28. What do we say about AI predicting earthquakes
A. The rate of accuracy is high.
B. It has got proven worldwide.
C. The prediction is completely random.
D. Earthquakes can be controlled by scientists.
29. Which can best explain the underlined word “seismic” in paragraph 2
A. Related to weather patterns. B. Related to earthquakes.
C. Related to volcanic activities. D. Related to ocean currents.
30. What is researchers’ attitude towards AI predicting earthquakes
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Optimistic. D. Unfavorable.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. The Development Of Earthquake
B. AI’s Role in Predicting Earthquakes
C. AI’s Forecast about Natural Disasters
D. The Understanding of Earthquake Physics

Plants have been important to humans since ancient times. They give us food, clothes and shelter. Their beauty brings us happiness, and many plants can also cure us. Recently, scientists found a plant that can better clean polluted air.
Scientists at a research institution in the UK studied how well plants can capture (捕获) pollution from cars. Car exhaust fumes (汽车尾气), as well as tire and brake particles, cause many health problems. Since previous research has shown that trees help remove air pollution, researchers decided to test three types of plants: hawthorn, western red cedar, and franchet’s cotoneaster (西南枸子).
Researchers found that franchet’s cotoneaster was the best at capturing pollution. This is because of its hairy and complex leaf structure. They also discovered that thick barriers over six feet high were the best at reducing pollution. In areas with heavy traffic, franchet’s cotoneaster absorbed 20% more pollution than the other plants.
A co-author of the study said, “We know that in just seven days, a 1-meter length of well-managed thick barrier will capture the same amount of pollution that a car emits (排放) over a 500-mile drive.” The researchers recommend planting franchet’s cotoneaster along busy roads.
This is great news for city planners, landscapers, and gardeners. Originally from China, franchet’s cotoneaster is a hardy evergreen that can survive temperatures as low as -23℃. It grows well in the UK and can also grow well in places like California, the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, and around the Great Lakes.
Thanks to this study, franchet’s cotoneaster has shown to be very useful. It allows gardeners and landscapers to help the environment. When these super plants are grown in urban gardens, on streets, and along highways, they will clean the air and add beauty to the surroundings.
32. Which aspect of plants is mainly mentioned in paragraph 1
A. Varieties of plants. B. Living environment.
C. Benefits of plants. D. Medical properties.
33. Why is franchet’s cotoneaster effective in capturing pollution
A. It requires less water.
B. It is taller than other plants.
C. It grows faster than other plants.
D. It has hair y and complex leaf structures.
34. What can we infer about franchet’s cotoneaster from paragraph 5
A. They will be planted less by gardeners.
B. They will be imported more from China.
C. They can adjust to the cold temperature.
D. They should be planted in correct places.
35. What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph
A. To highlight the environmental benefits of franchet’s cotoneaster.
B. To describe the appearance of franchet’s cotoneaster.
C. To compare franchet’s cotoneaster with other plants.
D. To explain how to plant franchet’s cotoneaster.

Sophia was a teenager going through changes in her behaviour and dressing style. One day after school, Sophia’s mother prepared a plate of delicious vegetables and rice and asked Sophia to have dinner, but she refused to eat it, insisting it wasn’t what she liked. Then she absent-mindedly knocked over a vase filled with beautiful roses. Her mother ignored it, but moments later, Sophia asked loudly, “Mummy! Why did you throw away some of my clothes and change the setting of my room ” Her mother was shocked as Sophia had never raised her voice so high.
At night when Sophia’s father came home, her mother discussed the matter with him. He listened carefully and asked Sophia’s mother to remain calm, no matter what Sophia did. “It’s time that we stepped back. Don’t do anything for her — no cooking, no laundry (洗衣物), no searching for her missing things…” he said.
The next day, Sophia overslept. Her mother didn’t wake her up or prepare breakfast, just putting some money on the table. Sophia grabbed the money and rushed to school. That afternoon, when Sophia returned home, she found there wasn’t any food prepared. Feeling unnoticed, Sophia went into her room, locked the door, and began to cry as if releasing the emotions she had bottled up for a long time.
After about 20 minutes, the doorbell rang. Quickly, Sophia dried her eyes and stepped out of her room. When she saw her mother return with a handful of shopping bags, she came in front of her, asking the reason for no breakfast or dinner. Her mother said gently, “Now that you have grown up and have your own thoughts, I’ll let you make some personal choices.” Then her mother headed to the kitchen, signaling Sophia to follow. Feeling confused, Sophia came into the kitchen with her mother.

Last Week, our school held a lecture on disaster prevention and relief in our school hall.
Delivered by a distinguished expert, the lecture shed light on various types of disasters. In addition, the lecture emphasized the importance of disaster prevention and response strategies through demonstrating the consequences of floods occurring lately. What impressed me most was that the lecture also stressed the importance of community cooperation in times of crises.
Overall, the lecture has left a lasting impact on me. It has equipped me with essential knowledge and motivated me to be responsible in the face of emergencies.

Her mother opened the bags and asked Sophia to look and choose by herself. Inside were fresh vegetables and grains that Sophia loved. “You’re old enough to decide what to eat and how to manage your time,” her mother said softly, handing her a recipe book. Excited but nervous, Sophia decided to make a beef sandwich. Having never cooked before, she naturally had difficulty throughout the process. Fortunately, her mother offered her helpful instructions, resulting in a not-so-good dinner. Sophia realized how hard the housework was.
The next morning, Sophia woke up with the determination to change. She went to the kitchen where her mother was making breakfast and apologized for her recent strange behavior. Her mother replied gently, “It’s okay. I’m just happy you’re better.” Sophia hugged her and promised to help with more chores. Later that day, she sorted out her clothes without complaining and bought a new vase for her mother after school. After dinner, as they washed the dishes together, Sophia understood that growing up meant learning to properly give rather than trying to take without any sense of gratitude.
