Swim shorts, cold fjords (峡湾) and hot water bottles-Lewis Pugh’s approach to climate campaigning is far from conventional. The Ilulissat glacier carves icebergs that are over a kilometre tall including, legend has it, the one that sunk the Titanic. As well as feeding legends, it feeds the Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland, and it’s across the mouth of this fjord that Lewis Pugh completed an extremely tiring swim in September, in an attempt to bring about meaningful action on the climate crisis.
Pugh, an endurance swimmer and UN sponsor of the oceans, completed the 7.8km swim on 7 September. Over 12 days, he faced water temperatures of between 0 and 3 degrees. His attempt was hampered (阻碍) by icebergs and ice, which blocked the mouth of the fjord.
“It feels like running across a motorway, except that instead of dodging cars, I’m in 0℃ water dodging icebergs,” he posted on social media. Wearing only speedos (a swimming suit brand), he had to monitor his body temperature constantly due to the risk of hypothermia (低温症).
It made Pugh, who was born in Plymouth, the first person to complete a multi-day swim in the Polar regions. He used hot water bottles and hot chocolate to warm up after a period of time in the water, and described the swim as the most challenging of his career.
“We rely on ice for our survival,” he said. “Ice keeps our planet cool enough for us to live. But we are losing it fast. No ice, no life.”
“We have seen so many natural disasters this year-from wildfires in Greece to foods in Germany, extreme snowstorms in Texas. But I also want everyone to be aware of what is happening here in the Arctic.”
Pugh will visit the COP26 conference in November to call for 30 per cent of the world’s oceans to be safeguarded as marine protected areas by 2030. His approach has been described as “speedo diplomacy”.
4. Why does the author mention “Ilulissat glacier” in the first paragraph
A. To stress the extreme challenge of Pugh’s swim. B. To show the urgent need for Arctic protection.
C To recall the historical sinking of Titanic. D. To describe the dramatic landscape of Greenland.
5. What does the underlined word “dodging” mean in paragraph 3
A. Following. B. Passing. C. Avoiding. D. Ignoring.
6. Which of the following can best describe Lewis Pugh
A. Outgoing. B. Persistent. C. Demanding. D. Stubborn.
7. What does “speedo diplomacy” probably refer to
A. Advocating extreme sports via social media.
B. Preventing natural disasters with joint efforts
C. Promoting environmental policies by swimming.
D. Establishing a marine protected area through negotiation.

A desire for offline community and connection is fuelling a resurgence (复兴) of interest in book clubs in the UK. Move over, Netflix-there’s a novel favourite pastime in town.
“The rise of book clubs is a testament to our longing for deeper connections,” says Holly Cooke, founder of The Lonely Girls Club.
Across the UK, book clubs are experiencing a comeback. Eventbrite reported a 350% increase in book club listings over the past four years, with more than 127,000 attendees getting together over their shared love of the written word. Meetup revealed that “book club” has surged back into the top 10 most searched events, reclaiming its popularity after a dip in 2021.
The resurgence of book clubs is more than just a statistical anomaly (反常). Many believe it’s a cultural phenomenon.
“I discovered the book club on Eventbrite in 2021 as things were starting to open up following the Covid-19 lockdowns,” says Marta Kizym, a regular attendee. “I loved it because we were all just relaxing at home, but what I really cherish is meeting new people and forming genuine connections. I’ve made many close friends through the book club, people I can truly be myself with.”
In an era of digital overload, book clubs also provide a welcome digital detox. After spending lockdown glued to screens, people are finding comfort in physical books and in-person discussions. “People don’t want to be on their phones any more,” shares Cooke. “They’re trying to get away from technology in a variety of different ways.”
Laura Menendez, another book club goer, adds: “For me, it’s the feeling of being welcome in a non-consuming space that circles around community. It’s one of the few things you can do nowadays that don’t involve spending money or consuming anything. It has restored my belief in the value of community and diversity in communities.”
Obviously, book clubs are proving that the age-old tradition of reading together is far from out-dated. The signs are, it’s never been more relevant.
8. Why does the author include numbers in paragraph 3
A. To contrast book clubs with online entertainment.
B. To dismiss the trend as a temporary phenomenon.
C. To emphasize the renewed popularity of book clubs.
D. To demonstrate the economic profitability of book clubs.
9. What do we know about the book clubs from paragraph 6
A. They help reduce screen time through offline activities.
B. They make criticism of modern technology use.
C They lose appeal with the popularity of digital reading.
D. They require members to use digital devices for club activities.
10. What can be inferred about the book clubs from Laura Menendez’s words
A. They focus more on social interaction than reading.
B. They primarily attract people who dislike consumption.
C. They encourage authentic friendships beyond community.
D. They offer a community independent of consumerism.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards reading together
A. Doubtful. B. Optimistic. C. Dismissive. D. Cautious.
D
Did you make any resolutions this new year If you did, are you keeping to them Well done if you are. A survey in America suggests half of new-year resolvers give up by the end of March. More scientific studies confirm that it takes months for a new behaviour to stick.
Habitual behaviour emerges in response to dopamine, a chemical associated with pleasure. Two brain systems are involved. One, in the basal ganglia (基底核), responds automatically to certain stimuli. For example, your morning alarm is a stimulus that activates your “getting up” habit. This will include sub-habits such as “shower”, “get dressed’’, “drive to office”, each with their own triggering stimuli and dopamine reward. The other brain system, which is goal-directed, is located in the cortex (大脑皮层). Its dopamine reward comes from a deliberate action being successfully performed. This goal-directed system can override the stimulus-response one. For example, if the radio tells you of a traffic problem, the “drive to office” sub-routine will need conscious adaptation. For one-time adaptations of habits, this arrangement of routine and override works well. But permanent changes, such as breaking an old habit requires weakening the stimulus-driven system to reduce the relevance of old stimuli and strengthening the goal-directed one to increase that of new ones.
In a paper published recently, Eike Buabang and his colleagues at Trinity College review the evidence behind various ways. In practice, most approaches seem to operate on the stimulus-response side. Deliberate repetition trains the brain so that what was once goal-directed becomes automatic. In the case of driving to work, the reward to do this is strong—you won’t get paid otherwise.
Why people learn bad habits in the first place remains mysterious. Most habits form precisely because they are helpful. Automatic behaviours, such as those involved in a morning routine, reduce cognitive load and free mental resources for other tasks, such as working out what to say in the ten-o’clock meeting. But these mechanisms can be disrupted. The nicotine taken in by smoking tobacco — a type of habit so powerful that it has a special name, “addiction” stimulates dopamine production directly. This is something natural selection could not have foreseen. Non-addictive habits like procrastination are harder to explain.
In the end, though, when it comes to habit-formation, the old joke gives us the solution: “How many psychoanalysts (精神分析学家) does it take to change a light bulb Only one, but the light bulb has to really want to change.”
12. What do we know about habit formation according to paragraph 2
A. Dopamine rewards are only produced by goal-directed behaviors.
B. Habit building system needs restructuring for a permanent change.
C. The goal-directed system cooperates with the stimulus-response one.
D. The stimulus-driven system requires conscious effort to activate habits.
13. What enables the goal-directed system to become automatic
A. Repeated practice. B. Frequent overrides.
C. Reduced mental load. D. One-time adaptations.
14. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The force behind nicotine addiction. B. The benefits of building good habits.
C. The complexity of forming bad habits. D. The value of foreseeing natural selection.
15. What is the best title of the text
A. Old habits die hard B. Habit is what keeps you going
C. Let’s make the right resolutions D. It takes resolution to keep resolutions

A couple of years ago, my wife bought my four-year-old son a set of wooden ramps (坡道) that could be combined with furniture to create courses for little balls to run through. The first course was easy to build. ____16____ Could we make the balls turn corners or go uphill Would the piano bench support a ramp The possibilities seemed endless. Over the next two years, we kept adjusting and adding elements to our courses. By the time my son lost interest, we had become experts, seeing ramp potential in almost anything.
I hadn’t expected to enjoy the ramps so much. ____17____ This is a form of effortful repetition. In many areas of life, we repeat tasks to perfect them. This is repetition in pursuit of an ideal.
____18____ It allows for exploration and discovery. For instance, when cooking, you can adjust ingredients over time, developing your cooking talent. In music, you can vary your performance, creating new compositions. Repainting a landscape can reveal new artistic opportunities. In these cases, repetition leads to an expanding set of possibilities, not a fixed endpoint
We’re used to exploring things ourselves, but as artificial intelligence advances, it can relieve us of the burden of trying again. AI systems can generate new versions of existing things, such as custom recipes based on a photo or multiple versions of a song or image. This raises key questions: Can automated exploration replace human creativity Is this variation the same as human creativity ____19____
It feels strange to imagine that soon we may need to remind ourselves to think. AI thinks for us and promises to do the thinking in many contexts. In a world dominated by technology, we already have to remind ourselves to disconnect, go outside, and have non-technological experiences. If we’re not careful, our minds will do less as computers do more. ____20____
A. But as our ambitions grew, so did the challenges.
B. And we may never be able to enjoy another ramp ever again.
C. How come this man-made technology outperforms our brain
D. There’s also another kind of repetition that combines variation.
E. It’s hard for us to decide whether to be the passengers or pilots of our lives.
F. But they turned out to be a special experience of trying, failing and trying again.
G. As AI improves, we may be tempted to let it take over the process of exploration.

Two days before New Year’s Eve, the world outside Kelly’s home was blanketed in a quiet frost. Twinkling lights hung from the roof, and the house smelled like cinnamon and pine. The day had unfolded like any other holiday afternoon-grocery delivery, a bit of tidying, and a spontaneous gesture of generosity. When she tipped her Uber delivery driver an extra $130 through the app, Kelly felt a quiet joy, imagining how it might brighten someone’s day. She gave it no further thought.
Until the next evening.
It was just after dusk when her doorbell rang. Startled (受惊的), Kelly glanced at her phone and tapped the Ring camera app. There, bundled in a thick jacket and shifting nervously on her feet, stood the same delivery woman from two days before. Her cheeks were tinged pink from the cold, and her eyes carried a restless intensity. She cleared her throat.
“Hi,” the woman began, her voice tentative but urgent. “I am so sorry to bother you. I’m not a psycho, I swear. I’m with Uber.”
Kelly blinked in confusion. The woman gave a tight smile and gestured toward the house with gloved hands, her breath misting in the air.
“I delivered your groceries the other day. I... I think you were overcharged,” she said quickly. “I got a $130 tip and — I just — I didn’t sleep last night. I kept thinking maybe it was a mistake or your card got hacked (被侵入) or something.”
Her voice trembled, part from the cold and part from the weight of anxiety she had clearly carried all night. She rocked on her heels, as though fighting the urge to flee. “I didn’t know how else to find you but to come back. I just — I didn’t want it to affect your account.”
Kelly stepped outside, a mix of surprise and warmth sweeping over her. “You got the money ” she asked.
The woman nodded. “Yeah. I received it. But I wasn’t sure if it was meant for me or not.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
“It was for you,” Kelly said with a smile, her voice softening.

46. Dear Chris,
I’m thrilled you’re exploring Chinese poetry! The line you mentioned literally means “Close friends within the world’s bounds feel like neighbors, even at the earth’s edge.” It highlights how true friendship exceeds physical distance through emotional connection.
This philosophy stems from traditional Chinese values. Ancient scholars believed spiritual bonds outweighed geographical separation, reflecting Confucian ideals of harmony and collective unity. Such lines reveal our cultural emphasis on enduring relationships over physical closeness.
Keep up your poetic journey — it’s a wonderful window into China’s soul!
Yours,
Li Hua
47. “It was for you,” Kelly said with a smile, her voice softening. The woman stared at her, lips parted slightly, unsure whether to believe her ears. Her eyes welled up. “Thank you... I’ve been delivering every day this month just to cover rent,” she whispered. “But I couldn’t sleep thinking it might not be rightfully mine.” Kelly’s gaze lingered on her, moved by her honesty. “You came all the way back just to make sure ” The woman gave a shy nod. Kelly felt a warmth swell in her chest. “I wish more people were like you,” she murmured. Under the porch light they hugged and said goodbye. (95 words)
The Ring camera recording everything, Kelly decided to do one more thing. She uploaded the short video to a neighborhood group with the caption: “Some hearts shine even brighter than holiday lights.” The post quickly spread-likes, comments, then shares. Messages poured in praising the woman’s honesty and humility. A small community fund was soon set up in her name, and strangers offered donations and even job leads. That night, as Kelly watched snowflakes drift lazily past the window, she glanced at the glowing screen one last time. There, frozen in the video’s thumbnail, was the woman’s face lit softly by the porch light-nervous, brave, and unmistakably kind. (95 words)
