Neil Shuttleworth, an 82-year-old English man, was hardly able to walk because of osteoarthritis in his right ankle. Problems began after he accidentally stepped into an unseen hole in a road surface while on holiday in Cyprus several years ago. Thankfully, he received an artificial ankle made from the materials of bulletproof (防弹的) vests.
Neil, a retired printing specialist from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, paid for the operation himself since it is not currently available on the National Health Service (NHS). When he finally chose to have the operation, he said it was because he had just one ambition: to walk hand-in-hand with Christine, his wife of 34 years. “Actually, I wasn’t expecting to run a marathon. I would like to walk down the Promenade de la Croisette in Cannes with my wife, but without the pain I had lived with for far too long.” Neil said.
The operation uses polyethylene (聚乙烯) materials that are used to make bulletproof vests, but with extra added vitamin E. Since the E-poly is made from strong plastic fibers, it is expected to last much longer than current replacement.
Before he was injured, Neil had an active lifestyle which involved running and cycling across the UK and Europe. After he stepped into the hole, which was several inches deep, he said he could not walk more than a few hundred yards as the pain in his ankle was so severe. Neil is now one of the first patients in the UK to have such an ankle replacement operation.
After wearing a special walker boot for six weeks following his operation, Neil received a strict six-week treatment that adopts special exercises. He is now able to walk a couple of miles, and he uses a running machine in order to build his fitness levels even further. “The results of Neil’s operation are impressive and there is at least an 80 to 90% chance the ankle replacement will survive for 10 to 15 years.” said Professor Nick Harris, who performed the operation.
4. What caused Neil Shuttleworth’s injury in his ankle
A. A car accident. B. A fight with someone.
C. An accidental step into an unseen hole. D. An unsuccessful operation
5. What kind of life did Neil live before he was injured
A. Passive. B. Active. C. Pitiful. D. Tiresome.
6. Which of the following statement is true
A. Neil’s operation was very common in the UK.
B. Neil’s ambition for the operation is to run a marathon.
C. After the operation Neil could walk as well as before.
D. The operation benefits from the E-poly.
7. What is the doctor’s opinion about the operation
A. Regretful. B. Puzzled. C. Satisfied. D. Disappointed

Mosquito repellents (驱蚊剂) have come a long way. For decades the market leader was DEET, which fights the insects off successfully, but only for an hour or two. Recently, Icaridin has become available. This lasts up to eight hours and is just as effective. Yet both are mildly poisonous to cells grown in culture (培养物). The search is thus on for something that is unquestionably not poisonous at all.
Francesca Dani of the University of Florence, in Italy, thinks she might have the answer. As she and her workmates describe in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, they looked at a range of chemicals called aldehydes and ketones, and produced something that seems a good, long-lasting, safe mosquito repellent.
Dr Dani knew from the scientific literature that some aldehydes and ketones have insect-repelling properties. Such chemicals, however, evaporate (蒸发) faster than DEET. But she also knew from her own work that hydroxylated cyclic acetals, which form from certain aldehydes and ketones when exposed to alcohol, evaporate much less rapidly. That, she thought, might be the key to the puzzle.
She and her workmates therefore made a score of hydroxylated cyclic acetals and tested their mosquito-repelling qualities against those of DEET and Icaridin. The standard way to do this is to spray (喷) some onto the back of a volunteer’s hand and have him or her then put both hands into a mosquito cage. The unsprayed hand acts as a control, and it is thereby possible to decide, by comparing the number of insects landing on each, how effective such a repellent is.
As expected, DEET scored 95% protection efficiency. Such protection was provided by 8.3 micrograms of the stuff being applied per square centimetre of skin, and lasted two hours. For Icaridin, a fifth of that amount produces an equal repelling effect for eight hours. To the researchers’ satisfaction, two of their hydroxylated cyclic acetals performed as well as Icaridin. And when they tested them on cell cultures, they found that one, called 12a in the paper, killed none of the cells exposed to it.
8. What is the problem with DEET
A. It can be harmful. B. It is not effective.
C. It is eco-friendly. D. It lasts less than an hour.
9. Which of the following may play a key role in preventing evaporation
A. Aldehydes. B. Ketones. C. Icaridin. D. Alcohol.
10 How was the test performed
A. By comparing different repellents. B. By putting a volunteer into a cage.
C. By counting the number of dead insects. D. By spraying some repellents onto mosquitoes.
11. What conclusion can be drawn about 12a
A. It works well even after 12 hours. B. It is a cheap alternative to Icaridin.
C. It is a promising mosquito repellent. D. It will soon be available on the market.

Discovering any collection of Paleolithic (旧石器时代的) art is rare, according to Aitor Ruiz-Redondo, an archaeologist at the University of Zaragoza in Spain. Only about 400 such sites have been found worldwide, and archaeologists all hope to know more about the art. Therefore, the discovery of more than 100 prehistoric designs, which were created over 24,000 years ago with unique techniques and preserved in a cave due to a lucky chemical occurrence, is simply extraordinary.
Cova Dones, the cave in question, lies close to Spain's eastern coast in Valencia, while most of the country’s ancient art, including the famous prehistoric cave paintings of Altamira, is in northern Spain. First explored by Ruiz-Redondo and his team in 2021, Cova Dones is home to at least 110 paintings, drawings and carvings. Many of the designs feature animals, like female red deer, wild horses and now-extinct oxen. Besides, most of Cova Dones’ paintings were done in clay and conserved.
The walls and standing water of Cova Dones are rich in calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a natural paints preservative. Early humans likely dug red clay from the cave’s floor and walls and mixed it with water at their feet. Whether intentionally or not, they created paints that were strengthened. Over time, water falling into the cave coated their artwork with a layer of calcium carbonate, sticking it to the wall for Ruiz-Redondo to find so many centuries later.
Determining the age of cave art is tough work. Ruiz-Redondo’s team are awaiting a full laboratory analysis of Cova Dones’ designs, including radiometric age measurement of their mineral coverings, but until then, a couple of logical approaches have provided some clarity. First, some of the designs are drawn in a style that’s typical of a period about 21,000 to 40,000 years ago, as evidenced by findings at other Paleolithic sites. Second, a drawing was marked by a cave bear, which went extinct 24,000 years ago, indicating the art is older.
Ruiz-Redondo states that archaeology has always had a romantic part — a sense of discovery. He adds, “Especially with the paintings, nobody has seen this horse in thousands and thousands and thousands of years, until now.”
12. What does the underlined word “preservative” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The stable temperature. B. A fading-resistant technique.
C. The undisturbed environment. D. A protective substance.
13. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The process of creating the paintings. B. The challenges of exploring cave art.
C. The methods of dating cave artworks. D. The meaning of conserving the works.
14. What does the horse painting in Cova Dones mean to Ruiz-Redondo
A. A connection to the past. B. A motivation for art research.
C. A symbol of a regional culture. D. A representation of romantic art.
15. Which is the best title for the passage
A. An Effective Method of Preserving Prehistoric Art
B. The Ways to Discover Prehistoric Art
C. The Effort in Determining the Age of Prehistoric Art
D. An Extraordinary Archaeological Discovery of Prehistoric Art

Jocelyn and Eileen lived only a block apart, and their lives seemed to move perfectly together. Where Jocelyn went, Eileen followed, and where Eileen dreamed, Jocelyn built. But as the years passed, the closeness began to change. It started slowly: Jocelyn chose a college in a distant city, while Eileen stayed close to home. Phone calls and text messages became the way they communicated with each other. At first, they made it work. But soon, the calls grew shorter, and the messages came with increasing delays.
A year turned into two. Jocelyn came home for Christmas during her second winter break. They planned to meet at their favorite café. But when Eileen arrived, the warmth she expected wasn’t there. Jocelyn looked different, as if the city had reshaped her. Her words were rushed, her laughter slightly guarded.
They talked, but it wasn’t like before. Jocelyn’s stories of her fast- paced life in the city felt foreign to Eileen. Eileen spoke about her job at the local bookstore and her recent painting classes, but Jocelyn’s absent-minded nods hurt. There was a gap between them now, wide and growing.
A week later, during a rare evening walk together, the tension finally surfaced.
“You never ask about me anymore,” Eileen said, her voice trembling (颤抖). “It’s like you’re here, but you’re not really here.”
Jocelyn stopped, surprised. “That’s not fair. I’m trying, Eileen. But everything’s different now. Life is different.”
“You’re different,” Eileen shot back. “We used to share everything. Now I feel like I’m just some small piece of your past.”
Jocelyn hesitated, searching for words. “I didn’t mean for this to happen,” she said quietly. “But maybe we’re just growing in different directions.”
The silence between them was heavier than the winter air. They both knew the truth in Jocelyn’s words, but neither wanted to admit how much it hurt.
Later their meetings grew less frequent. Their conversations became just the occasional holiday greeting.

47.
One spring morning, Eileen received a large express package from Jocelyn. Surprised, she opened it to find a box filled with carefully chosen items: a photo album of their childhood adventures, a necklace she had once admired in a shop but never bought, and a handwritten letter. In the letter, Jocelyn apologized for the distance that had grown between them. She admitted she had been swept up in her new life, but wanted Eileen to know she still cherished their friendship deeply. The letter ended with a promise to reconnect and honor the bond that had shaped them both.
Eileen felt a rush of emotions as she read Jocelyn’s heartfelt words. Tears filled her eyes. She realized that while their lives had taken different paths, the foundation of their friendship remained strong. That evening, she called Jocelyn, and they talked like they hadn’t in years — openly, with honesty and without judgment. They laughed, shared updates, and reflected on how far they had come. Though their lives had changed, they realized their bond didn’t have to disappear. It could evolve, growing with them, into something new but equally meaningful and lasting.
