The Urban Sustainability Challenge (USC) is a national competition inviting high school teams to design actionable solutions for urban environmental issues. Teams of 3-5 members propose projects in three categories: waste management, green transportation, or energy efficiency. The competition emphasizes innovation, feasibility (可行性), and community impact.
Program Structure:
1. Proposal Submission (by November 10):
Submissions must include a 10-page report with technical diagrams, budget plans, and a feasibility analysis.
Example: A 2022 winning project from Seattle proposed solar-powered trash compactors to reduce landfill overflow.
2. Mentorship (导师制) Phase (December-February):
Shortlisted teams receive guidance from engineers and urban planners.
Teams attend biweekly workshops on prototyping, cost-benefit analysis, and public presentation skills.
A 2023 team from Boston improved their electric bike-sharing model after feedback on battery efficiency.
3. Final Pitch (March 15):
Live presentations are evaluated by a panel including the CEO of Green Cities Foundation and the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy.
Top three teams receive grants up to $10,000 and mentorship to implement their projects.

On a bright September day in the French Alps in 2022, John McAvoy was 38 kilometres into a very exhausting ultramarathon through rough mountain paths. Battling tiredness, he pushed his body and mind through the final leg of the race. With the finish arch in the famous town of Chamonix just four kilometres away and the cloud-topped peak of Mont Blanc high over him, McAvoy welled up with emotion.
In that moment, he felt so free and alive. It was quite the opposite from where his life had been a decade before. He had just been released from prison after serving a 10-year sentence.
Now 40 years old, McAvoy has spent the last 10 years rebuilding his life from one of crime to one with purpose. It was on this day, while running the ultramarathon, that he realized how impactful conquering (征服) this mountain run could be for inner-city kids like him. After all, sport had helped him live a normal life again and open up his world. It could do the same for others.
With the help of Youth Beyond Borders, McAvoy started the Alpine Run Project, which recently led 12 disadvantaged British young people through their own Mont Blanc races. The participants, from refugees (难民) to young reformed criminals and those who grew up in Children’s home, were matched with coaches, consultants and physiotherapists. After a six-month training program, the youth travelled to the Alps to meet up with McAvoy for their race.
McAvoy says the highlight of this project for him was watching Yasmin Mahamud, a 20-year-old refugee from Syria, run through the finish arch and into the arms of her new friends. It was a life-changing high for Mahamud, too-inspiring her to keep running, take up martial arts and go to university to study physiotherapy.
“It changed my point of view on life, says Mahamud. Pushing herself to complete the race gave her a brief experience of her own potential through hard work and devotion.” I will always be thankful to John for giving me this opportunity and guidance.
4. How did McAvoy feel before the finish arch
A. He felt totally collapsed. B. He was peaceful and hopeful.
C. He was satisfied with his pace. D. He felt as if completely reborn.
5. What can we learn about McAvoy from paragraph 3
A. He was a builder 10 years ago. B. He realized the importance of sport.
C. He ran to make up for his past wrongs. D. He had sympathy for the inner-city children.
6. Who most probably took part in the Mont Blanc races
A. A running coach. B. A travel lover. C. A homeless teenager. D. A skilled athlete.
7. What message does McAvoy’s story convey
A. Live for the moment. B. Dream big and climb high.
C. After the storm comes the rainbow. D. Run after the light and become the light.
C
Clothes were once used until they fell apart. Not today. In high-income countries in particular, clothing and footwear are increasingly frequently bought, thrown away and replaced with new fashions, which are themselves soon thrown away and replaced.
The so-called ‘Fast fashion’ is having a surprising environmental impact. The first one is water. The fashion industry consumes anywhere from 20 trillion (万亿) to 200 trillion litres every year. Then there are micro-plastics. Plastic fibres are released when we wash polyester (聚酯纤维) textiles, which make up between20% and 35% of the micro-plastics choking the oceans. Added to this are specific chemicals, such as those used to make fabrics stain resistant and the pesticides required to protect crops such as cotton.
Change is badly needed, but will require the fashion industry to work harder to embrace more of what is known as the circular economy. That will involve at least two things: refocusing on making things that last, and so encouraging reuse; and more rapidly expanding the technologies for sustainable manufacturing processes, especially recycling. There’s a big role for research-both academic and industrial-in achieving these and other ambitions.
Researchers could begin by helping to provide more accurate estimates of water use. There is also work to be done on improving and expanding textiles recycling. Undoubtedly, used textiles go to landfill in part because there are relatively few systems that collect, recycle and reuse materials. Such recycling requires the manual separation of fibres, as well as buttons and zips. Different fibres are not easy to identify by eye, and overall such manual processes are time-consuming. Machinery that can help is being developed. Technologies also exist to recycle used fibres chemically and to create high-quality fibres that can be reused in clothing. But these are nowhere near the scale needed.
Another challenge for researchers is to workout how to get consumers and manufacturers to change their behaviour. Other research questions include finding ways to encourage people to purchase long lasting goods; exploring how to satisfy desires for something new while reducing environmental impact; and understanding why certain measures can be successfully scaled up whereas others fail.
8. Why does the author mention “water”, “micro-plastics” and “chemicals” in Paragraph 2
A. To provide an idea. B. To prove a point.
C. To give a definition. D. To present new concepts.
9. Which of the following goes against the concept of “circular economy”
A. Efforts are made to lengthen the lifespan of textiles.
B. Worn-out clothes are used as dishcloths and oil rags.
C. High-quality fibres are created to be reused in clothing.
D. Fashion industry is encouraged to release new lines more often.
10. What is the right thing for the fashion industry researchers to do
A. To make sure that all of the used textiles go to landfill.
B. To separate fibres, as well as buttons and zips manually.
C. To improve and expand textile recycling to a larger extent.
D. To encourage consumers to satisfy their desires for fashion.
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Say Yes to the So-called Fast Fashion
B. Cut Fast Fashion’s Environmental Impact
C. Address the Academic Challenges for Researchers
D. Improve the Efficiency of the Separation of Fibres
D
Has someone ever told you something that made you doubt your own memory or judgment If so, you may be a victim of gaslighting: “Gaslighting” is a kind of psychological abuse to gain power over others by purposely making other people think they’re wrong even when they’re right. The term comes from Patrick Hamilton’s play in 1938. Lead character Jack Manningham seeks to convince his wife Bella that she is going crazy, by saying she is imagining the dimming of the gas light in their home, when it was actually he who lowered the brightness of the light.
Gaslighting is initially used to talk about what happens in romantic relationships. However, many individuals also experience gaslighting at work. In fact, a recent survey has found that 58% of the respondents said they have experienced gaslighting at work. It’s unsurprising since gaslighting usually involves a power relationship and a need to control others. In the workplace, the dynamics between a boss and his employee can be the perfect breeding ground for this type of behavior. You boss may tell you to handle an assignment in a certain way, but when you do, he gets annoyed and says it isn’t what he wants. It makes you feel like your memory is faulty.
In order to find out whether your boss’s behavior really constitutes gaslighting or he is just a poor communicator, you could write down your experiences and ask yourself what really has happened, what his motives might be, and how your emotion is affected. But always be careful because gaslighters know how to fly under the radar. They are skilled at weakening an employee’s confidence and sense of reality in a clever and hard-to-prove way.
To protect yourself, at the end of the conversation with your boss, repeat back what you have heard and follow up with an e-mail restating the main points, documenting the interactions between you two. But don’t get your hopes high that this will automatically solve the problem, Robin Stern, author of The Gaslight Effect, warns, because it’s hard to get a gaslighter to change his behavior pattern. If things don’t improve, you may want to consider getting out of the gaslighting situation by looking for a new position.
12. Why does the author mention Patrick Hamliton’s play in paragraph 1
A. To introduce a famous play in history. B. To show the origin of the term “gaslighting”.
C. To describe how people go crazy in daily life. D. To explain the relationship between couples.
13. Why is gaslighting common in the workplace according to the text
A. Because employees are too sensitive. B. Because bosses are poor communicators.
C. Because employers want to dominate. D. Because work assignments are too difficult.
14. What is suggested for employees to determine if their boss is gaslighting them
A. E-mailing their boss to ask for documents. B. Having an argument with the boss.
C. Recording and analyzing their experiences. D. Making a complaint to the superiors.
15. What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To introduce gaslighting’s origin and its solutions. B. To highlight gaslighting’s harm and its reasons.
C. To discuss a survey on gaslighting and its effects. D. To explain gaslighting’s definition and its types.

I was so caught up in my busy work life that I only focused on my own routines. Every day, I was trapped in a self-centered bubble, rushing from one task to another, completely unaware of the beauty that could exist between people.
That fateful day at the supermarket changed everything. I stood there, mortified, as the clerk informed me that I was $ 12 over what I had on me. Panic started to set in as I realized I might have to leave some of the essential items behind. I began to remove items from the bags, feeling embarrassed and a bit flustered.
Just then, another shopper, a middle-aged man with kind eyes, stepped forward and handed me a $20 bill. “Please don’t put yourself out, ” I told him, trying to decline his generous offer. “Let me tell you a story, ” he said, his voice soft yet carrying a weight of emotion. “My mother is in the hospital with cancer. I visit her every day and bring her flowers. I went this morning, and she got mad at me for spending my money on more flowers. She demanded that I do something else with that money. So, here, please accept this. It is my mother’s flowers. ”
I was stunned by his kindness and the depth of his story. I stared at him in disbelief for a moment. Then I thanked him profusely and accepted the money, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt.
As I left the store, I couldn’t stop thinking about the man and his mother. I thought about the selflessness of his act, sacrificing his intended gift for his sick mother to help a stranger in need. I’ve always believed in helping others, and this moment reminded me why it’s so important. It wasn’t just about the money; it was about the connection.
The next day, I went to the hospital where the man’s mother was staying. I brought a small bouquet of flowers and asked the receptionist for her room number. When I entered the room, I saw an elderly woman lying in bed, her face pale but her eyes full of warmth. I introduced myself and told her about her son’s act of kindness.

Dear Ms. Sun,
Considering the recent continuous high temperature and the operation of the school’s central air-conditioning, I’d like to propose some suggestions to prevent students from suffering colds and coughs due to abrupt temperature changes
Firstly, it is advisable to maintain the air-conditioning temperature at round 26℃. A proper indoor temperature can narrow the gap with the outdoor temperature, reducing the body’s burden of adapting to sudden changes and minimizing the risk of illness. Secondly, regular ventilation is essential. Opening windows for 10-15 minutes every two hours helps refresh the air, removing stale air and decreasing the spread of germs in enclosed spaces
I sincerely hope these suggestions can be of some help.
Best regards,
Li Hua
Version 2
Dear Ms. Sun,
Due to the recent continuous high temperature, the school has turned on the central air-conditioning. To prevent students from suffering colds and coughs caused by abrupt temperature changes. I’m writing to share my suggestions with you.
Firstly, the temperature should be kept at 26℃. Doctors suggest keeping the indoor temperature 5-8℃ lower than outside. If the AC is too cold, students may feel dizzy or catch a cold when going outdoors. Secondly, opening windows during breaks is important. Fresh air can reduce germs in closed rooms. For example, we could open windows for 10 minutes every two hours. Finally, reminding students to bring jackets is helpful. Those sitting near AC vents can wear them to stay warm.
These steps are easy to follow but can make a big difference. Thank you for caring about our health.
Best regards,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
She listened absorbedly, a proud smile spreading across her face. Tears welled up in her eyes as I described how her son had come to my aid without hesitation. She reached out and gently held my hand, expressing how deeply moved she was by his kindness. I could see the love between them, even in that brief moment. She told me how difficult it had been for her recently, but that her son's compassion gave her strength and hope. I stayed with her for a while, chatting and sharing small laughs. Before I left, I promised to visit again. That day, I realized the power of human connection — it can bring light into the darkest times and heal hearts in unexpected ways.
Some time later, I received a letter of gratitude from the man. In the letter, he thanked me for visiting his mother and said that she had cherished the flowers and the conversation. He wrote that seeing her smile that day meant more to him than words could express. He also shared how inspired he felt by my gesture, and that it reminded him not to lose faith in the goodness of strangers. Enclosed in the letter was the $20 bill again, with a note saying, “Pass it on.” I smiled, realizing that kindness truly has a ripple effect — one small act can spark a chain of warmth and hope.
