Our History
Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was the first online participatory-science project, also referred to as community science or citizen science, to collect data on wild birds. Birds Canada joined the project in 2009 to provide an expanded capacity to support participation in Canada. Two years later, we successfully carried out the first nationwide bird-watching activity within Canada. In 2013, we became a global project when we began entering data into eBird, the world’s largest biodiversity-related participatory science.
Project Goal
Each February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds. Over these four days we invite people to spend time in their favorite places watching and counting as many birds as they can find and reporting them to us. These observations help scientists better understand global bird populations before one of their annual migrations(迁徙).
Join Us

One popular piece of advice for boosting creativity is to learn something new every day. But here’s the catch: This only works if that new information is very different from what’s already in your head. This is where most of our modern habits fall short. Internet searches, for instance, give you information that you’re already interested in. So, what can be done For me, I choose to read obituaries (讣告).
I’m not talking about the half-page write-ups of celebrities. I mean the small-print obituaries in the New York Times Sunday edition. These people aren’t famous. At first glance, their lives might seem like little more than a collection of dates and achievements. But for me, they’ve become a source of creativity — each one an insight into a life I would have never imagined.
Here is an obituary that I read one Sunday morning: Norton Garfinkle died on March 202025 at the age of 94. Garfinkle was a professor at Amherst College and an entrepreneur. He founded a company that detected land mines for the U. S. and foreign governments. He invented a news database and sold it to Reuters. He developed PLAX, the first pre-brushing dental rinse (漱口液).
You’ve probably never heard of him. I haven’t, either. But reading his stories introduces you to a mix of fields — oral hygiene (卫生), database design, and other areas that you’d rarely, if ever, encounter all in one place. It’s exactly the kind of conceptually distant material that helps fuel creative thinking.
When reading an obituary, remember to ask questions. What led someone to invent PLAX or build search tools for financial news decades before Google Even if you don’t find all the answers, just posing the questions helps you keep curiosity and connection, thus boosting creativity.
Keep asking “Why ”, and look for distant connections with your own life. Creativity is a daily practice available to anyone.
4. How do most people think creativity can be improved
A. By following unique advice. B. By boosting brain functions.
C. By getting new information. D. By reading obituaries online.
5. What does the example of Norton Garfinkle mainly illustrate
A. Creativity originates from achievements.
B. Technologies help offer insights into history.
C. Obituaries often reveal different personalities.
D. Obituaries can expose readers to various fields.
6. What does the author suggest we do when reading obituaries
A. Avoid too much detail. B. Compare various fields.
C. Ask thoughtful questions. D. Focus on famous names.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing this text
A. To argue against modern habits of learning.
B. To recommend a way to enhance creativity.
C. To share the experience of reading obituaries.
D. To show obituaries as a source of factual data.

One trained California sea lion named Ronan can keep a beat better than some people, according to a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports. Ronan, a 15-year-old sea lion considered non-releasable after malnutrition, joined UC Santa Cruz’s Pinniped Lab in 2010.
To put Ronan’s beat keeping to the test, the team designed an experiment to assess Ronan’s consistency and coordination (协调) in moving in time to the beat of a drum. They beat a drum at 112,120, and 128 beats per minute(bpm). They then presented these same sounds to 10undergraduate students between 18 and 23 years old and asked them to wave their hands in time to the drum beat. The team used video tracking software to monitor how precise the undergraduate’s timekeeping was.
Overall, Ronan’s timekeeping was more accurate and less variable than the human test subjects. Ronan’s accuracy also increased with the tempo (节奏). At the tempo of 128 bpm, her average tempo was 129 bpm. The human subject’s average was only 116.2 bpm. After completing the test, Ronan was rewarded with a toy filled with fish and ice.
Since this study only tested timekeeping with one trained sea lion and 10 humans, larger studies are needed to see if these results can be found.
There is no shortage of great musicians among humans, who demonstrate high musical talent through their highly influential works. While humans may corner the market of writing songs, rhythm itself is more widespread across the animal kingdom. “Humans are animals. The more we look, the more we find that human capabilities exist in other species,” says Peter Cook, a study co-author. “To understand the human mind, how humans think and act, we need to examine the foundation of our behavior and cognition (认知). Studying other species provides a window into just that.”
8 Why did the researchers beat the drum with varied beats
A. To test Ronan’s tempo accuracy.
B. To train Ronan to follow the beats.
C. To measure Ronan’s speed of learning beats.
D. To demonstrate drum skills to human subjects.
9. What can we learn about Ronan from the study results
A. Her performance improved with rewards. B. She followed the beat better.
C. Her consistency declined without practice. D. She could adjust her average tempo.
10. What does the underlined phrase “corner the market” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Need capabilities. B. Discover new ways.
C. Establish dominance. D. Grasp marketing skills.
11 What can be the best title for the text
A. Sea Lion Ronan: A Beat-keeping Winner
B. Sea Lion Ronan: A Window to Animal Behavior
C. Sea Lion Ronan Succeeds in a Drum Competition
D. Sea Lion Ronan Equals Humans in Sensing Beats

Amazon announced it has made a robot, Vulcan, with a sense of touch that will be capable of grabbing about three-quarters of the items in its warehouses (仓库). Vulcan, launched in Dortmund, Germany, on Wednesday, is to be employed around the world in the next few years. Aaron Parness, Amazon’s director of robotics, described Vulcan as a “fundamental step forward in robotics. It’s not just seeing items. It’s feeling them.”
In warehouses, Vulcan will be able to identify objects by touch using AI to work out what they can and can’t handle and figuring out how best to pick them up. They will also work alongside humans who take items off shelves and put them back, while robots on wheels bring the shelves to them, of which Amazon now has more than 750,000 in operation. What’s more, Vulcan will be able to put items on the upper and lower levels of the shelves so that humans no longer need to use ladders (梯子) or bend so often during their work.
The development is likely to raise fears of job losses as employers reduce human involvement in distribution (配送) centres, which employ thousands of people. Some experts predicted in 2023 that 300m jobs worldwide could be automated out of existence by 2030 as a result of the development of AI, with many more roles largely transformed.
However, Tye Brady, the chief technologist of robotics at Amazon, said robots could not completely replace humans in the group’s warehouses but were there to improve safety in the workplace. “People will always play an important role,” he said, “while machines will handle the simple, boring, and repetitive tasks.”
Brady said the latest generation of robots moved safely alongside people and were able to “ask for help” so that they could learn new ways of doing things. “It’s really exciting to bring both the mind and the body together,” he said. “It’s finally here, and it’s just the beginning.”
12. What do we know about Vulcan from the first paragraph
A. It’s able to see and feel objects.
B. It has already been used widely.
C. It can replace most human workers.
D. It’s developed by engineers in Germany.
13. What does paragraph 2 talk about
A. The challenges of working with robots.
B. The functions of Vulcan in warehouses.
C. The limitations of AI in warehouse tasks.
D. The number of robots on wheels in Amazon.
14. What might be a consequence of introducing Vulcan
A. The risk of unemployment. B. The concerns about safety.
C. The decrease in workers’ salaries. D. The demand for more distribution centres.
15. How does Brady feel about the robotic future
A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.

“Who wants to show us your special project first ” Mrs. Williams asked my class. For this project, we were allowed to do anything as long as we did it ourselves.
“Don’t call on me. Don’t call on me.” I talked to myself. “Michael, your project, please.” Michael, that was me. I swallowed the baseball-sized lump in my throat and stood up. Jayce, my deskmate, whispered some words of encouragement to me, saying, “Go for it.” I walked to the front of the class and set my birdhouse on the table. “This is my birdhouse,” I began. “I looked online for plans to build it. Then I designed it by myself. My dad cut four pieces of wood using the measurements I gave him for the walls.” I turned the birdhouse to show my class all four sides.
Luka’s hand shot up. We were supposed to take questions if anyone had them. Luka was my friend, but he always asked a billion questions. I looked at the clock above the class door, just wanted to finish and sit down.
“So if your dad cut the wood, what did you do ” he asked. The lump in my throat was now the size of a basketball. “I came up with the idea and talked with my dad about it. And I figured out how to nail the roof so I can clean out the house after the birds leave.” I lifted the roof to show everyone. “Then I nailed all the walls together.” I picked up the heavy hammer (锤子) I had borrowed from Dad. I had left one of the nails sticking out a little so I could demonstrate.
As I gave the nail a hit, the hammer came down on the roof instead of the nail. The birdhouse landed in a noisy pile (堆) at my feet. There was a loud gasp (倒抽气), and then nobody spoke. “I wanted to show you how to build a birdhouse — and how to take it apart,” I said, thinking fast. “As you can see, I did it all myself.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The class broke into laughter and then started clapping for me!

A. Cautious. B. Optimistic. C. Concerned. D. Doubtful.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. A 15. B

Dear Alex,
I hope this email finds you well. I’m writing to share an exciting activity with you — the Dragon Boat Festival Culture Activity held in our school last week.
The activity kicked off with an informative lecture. A professor was invited to introduce the cultural significance of the festival. After that, there were hands-on activities. We tried making zongzi, a traditional rice dumpling. What’s more, there was a dragon boat model-making competition. Our team worked together: cutting, gluing and decorating, and finally created a wonderful model.
This activity not only allowed me to have a deeper understanding of our traditional culture but also made me proud of being part of such a rich cultural heritage. I sincerely hope that you can experience the charm of the Dragon Boat Festival someday.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】One possible version:
The class broke into laughter and then started clapping for me! “Fascinating project, Michael. Real builders know accidents happen,” Mrs. Williams said, coming towards me. She was smiling so big that all her teeth showed. “Are you all right ” she asked me under her breath. I nodded. As I walked to my seat, Jayce gave me a high five. “Wow. That was almost a disaster, but you handled it so well!” he said. Looking at the birdhouse, I held my head high. I couldn’t wait to tell my dad the good news!
When I got home, Dad was shocked when he saw a pile of wood in my schoolbag. I told him how the birdhouse fell apart and how I reacted. Dad laughed heartily and said, “Son, you were really brave. The important thing is that you keep calm and never give up.” Inspired by his words, I determined to rebuild the birdhouse. This time, with Dad’s guidance, I cut the wood myself, hammered the nails firmly, and finally completed a better birdhouse. Looking at the newly-made birdhouse, I realized that this experience was about learning to persevere in the face of setbacks, and the value of family support in the journey of self-improvement.
