The vast area of Patagonia remains mostly unaffected by men, but oil pollution, long-time climate change and local fisheries still pose many risks to the millions of Magellanic penguins (企鹅) that return there to breed (繁殖) and nest each year.
“They are the lords of this place,” says Pablo Borboroglu, the founder and president of the Global Penguin Society. “Most people think that there are only three or four species of penguins and they all live on ice because of movies or cartoons,” he says, but these assumptions are far from true. Of 18 species of penguins, only four are limited to Antarctica. “The penguins that are facing more problems are the ones that have to coexist with the humans,” he notes.
Borboroglu thinks that mutually beneficial coexistence between humans and animals is essential for the penguins’ survival. His team promotes eco-tourism and fosters conversations with governments and entrepreneurs (企业家) . In many developing countries, leaders want to help save species, but hard financial realities sometimes get in the way.
Still, there are victories. Ten years ago, Borboroglu and his team discovered a new group of penguins. There were only six pairs. So, his team made a plan to reward locals. They pushed to establish an ecotourism operation, and worked with locals on management plans. The effort created jobs for people and generated local interest in the penguins. Ten years later, they counted almost 2,600 pairs, and the number continues to grow.
Borboroglu also firmly believes that investing in public education will ensure lasting impact, especially among young people. So, he designs education programs teaching an appreciation of penguins and their needs, knowing that these children will someday be future leaders.
8. What’s the common misunderstanding about penguins
A. All of them live on ice. B. There are 18 species on the Earth.
C. They are facing survival problems. D. Only 4 species live on Antarctica.
9. Which may Borboroglu agree with about the penguins’ survival
A. Entrepreneurs should help with financial difficulties.
B. Developing countries should do more to save penguins.
C. Governments should control the development of tourism.
D. Humans should coexist with penguins in a friendly way.
10. Why does the author make a comparison in Paragraph 4
A. To show penguins’ ability to breed. B. To prove the achievement the team got.
C. To inspire people’s interest in penguins. D. To introduce ways to protect penguins.
11. What will Borboroglu do to continue protecting penguins
A. Choose the future leaders. B. Build colder habitats for penguins.
C. Raise money for penguins. D. Promote education projects among the young.
D
In recent years, gene editing has appeared as one of the most groundbreaking and argue-about fields in modern science. At its core, gene editing involves the strict operation of an organism’s DNA, allowing scientists to add, remove, or modify genetic material.
The potential benefits of gene editing are vast. In the medical field, it holds the promise of treating and even curing genetic diseases, offering hope to patients who previously had few treatment options. Beyond treating diseases, gene editing could also play a crucial role in agriculture. Scientists could potentially edit the genes of crops to make them more resistant to pests, droughts, or extreme temperatures. This would not only increase food production but also reduce the need for harmful pesticides and herbicides. Crops could be engineered to have higher nutritional value, addressing issues of malnutrition in many parts of the world.
However, gene editing is not without its risks. One of the major concerns is the issue of “off-target effects.” When using tools like CRISPR-Cas9, there is a possibility that they may cut DNA at unintended locations. These off-target cuts could lead to unforeseen genetic changes, potentially causing new health problems, such as an increased risk of cancer.
Another significant concern is the concept of “designer babies.” There is a fear that gene editing could be used not just to treat diseases but also to improve certain characteristics in humans. Parents might be able to select for characteristics such as intelligence, height, or eye color. This raises questions about the fairness of access to such technology.
Furthermore, there are long-term ecological risks associated with gene editing. If gene-edited organisms are released into the environment, they could potentially interact with wild populations in unpredictable ways. For instance, a gene-edited pest-resistant plant might have unforeseen effects on the insects that rely on it for food, destroying entire ecosystems.
As gene editing technology continues to develop, it is essential that scientists, policymakers, and society as a whole engage in a comprehensive and ongoing discussion. Striking the right balance between using the potential benefits of gene editing and reducing its risks will be crucial for the future of this powerful technology.
12. What does the underlined word “malnutrition” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. poor nutrition B. cancer C. flood D. education quality
13. Which is a potential benefit of gene editing
A. Causing off-target effects in human genes.
B. Treating genetic diseases and improving crop quality.
C. Creating “designer babies” with selected characteristics.
D. Destroying ecosystems when gene-edited organisms are released.
14. What does the author think about the future of gene editing
A. It should be completely banned due to its risks.
B. Scientists should develop it without any restrictions.
C. Society needs to discuss to balance its benefits and risks.
D. Only wealthy countries should be allowed to use this technology.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Risks of Gene Editing
B. The Wonders of Gene Editing
C Gene Editing: Benefits and Risks
D. Gene Editing in Agriculture and Medicine

At the opening ceremony of the campus basketball cultural festival, the spotlight was flashing and the music was exciting. The entire gym was immersed in a warm and lively atmosphere. The members of the school basketball team, dressed in brand-new uniforms, made a brilliant entrance in the cheers of the crowd. However, only the team captain, Liam, had a slightly heavy step and his eyes were filled with worry. He was well aware that the upcoming city-wide high school basketball league was a huge challenge for this team, which had been in decline recently.
After the opening ceremony, with anxiety overwhelming him, Liam dragged his heavy feet towards the coach’s office. Coach Johnson sat in his office, the dim light casting shadows across the walls decorated with medals and photographs of his basketball-winning teams. Liam, stepped inside, his eyes filled with uncertainty. “Coach, I need your advice. The team’s been struggling, and I don’t know how to bring them together.”
Coach Johnson smiled, motioning (示意) for Liam to take a seat. “Let me tell you a story,” he began, his voice soft and reliable. “When I was about your age, I was part of a basketball team that faced challenges similar to yours,” he said, his eyes distant with memory. “We were talented, but we lacked the trust that true teamwork requires. We played for individual glory, not for each other. As a result, we found ourselves losing basketball games we should have won, our potential unrealized. One day, our coach pulled us aside and shared a profound (深刻的) truth: ‘The heart of team work lies not in the scoreboard, but in the bonds with one another. When you play for each other, when you lift each other up, you become unstoppable. ‘From that moment on, we shifted our focus. We started playing for each other, celebrating our teammates’ successes as if they were our own. We picked each other up when we stumbled, and we faced challenges as a united group.”
Liam’s eyes widened with understanding, a glimmer of hope sparking within him.

46. Dear fellow students,
With the global environmental problems becoming increasingly severe, it’s high time we took action to protect our planet. A healthy environment is the foundation of our survival and development, providing us with clean air, water, and abundant resources. Once damaged, it will bring irreversible disasters to humanity.
Here are some practical measures we can take. First we should reduce waste by recycling and reusing items. Second, using public transportation, cycling, or walking instead of private cars can cut down on carbon emissions. Third, we can start from daily habits, like turning off lights when leaving rooms and saving water.
Let’s join hands and become environmental protectors. Every small step matters. Together, we can make a big difference!

47. One possible version:
Liam nodded, a newfound determination settling in his chest. He decided to put Coach Johnson’s advice into action right away. The next day, he called the team together before practice. Instead of talking about skills or plays, he asked everyone to share their thoughts and goals. At first, the players were shy, but soon they began to open up. Through honest talks, they started to understand and support each other more. Liam made sure every voice was heard and every effort was appreciated. During training, he encouraged teamwork over personal success. Slowly, the team spirit grew stronger. Players began to trust one another, work harder, and enjoy the game again.
Here came the key basketball game of the season. The gym was full, and the energy was high. As the game started, it was clear this was no longer the same struggling team. They moved as one — passing with trust, defending with unity, and playing with heart. When mistakes happened, there were no angry words, only helping hands. Even under pressure, they stayed calm and focused on supporting each other. In the final minutes, they faced a tough lead change, but instead of panicking, they stayed united. With one last play, Liam passed the ball to the right teammate, and the crowd cheered not just for the win, but for the team spirit that made it possible.
