Power of Public Speaking has partnered with ASI Innovation Labs to integrate artificial intelligence into the Pops Classroom platform for improving public speaking skills. The first project is the Pops Advisor which provides an automatic evaluation of students’ video presentations with visual feedback.
The Advisor offers on-demand comments to students practicing public speaking from anywhere. This flexibility benefits instructors, who can be as hands-on or hands-off during practice. While students can operate autonomously with the tool, instructors can also choose to keep track of students’ progress.
Criteria
Using machine learning models, the Pops Advisor analyzes the following criteria:
Delivery Introduction Body Conclusion
Vocal Style Vocal Quality Vocal Filler Eye Contact Body Language Credibility Attention Central Idea Preview Connective Support Language Connective Credibility Organization Signaling Ending Summary Memorable Ending Credibility
Feedback
The presenter receives feedback on the above four categories. And this feedback is given in the following formats:
Recommendations
To provide presenters with valuable feedback for the next practice, recommendations focus on specific aspects needing improvement. For instance, the recommendation can be “Your message is clear, but be sure you are grabbing your audience’s attention in your introduction to ensure they are listening.”
Speech Metrics (指标)
Useful speech metrics serve as quantitative descriptors on several aspects of the presentation including number of words, total presentation time, speaking rate and vocal fillers percentage.
Pops Advisor can be used in any classroom setting where students are presenting, particularly in the Basic Public Speaking Course. When you are considering what can be achieved by your students toward skill development in a single school semester, Advisor increases the overall development.

My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I tried incredibly hard to focus on the words that I spent hours putting down on paper. I tried to defeat my fear of speaking in public on numerous occasions throughout my life. During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting. Public speaking had been my nemesis for as long as I could remember.
Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to join the public speaking group Toastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work.
It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out. Science has made this country a place where dreams come true—this is why we all need to protect science. In addition, as a science writer, I try to get readers to understand how science is related to their daily lives.
So I ended up on that frightening stage on that sunny Saturday in April—Earth Day. Despite the body shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I looked out into the crowd of like-minded science supporters and I felt comfort.
Reaching that milestone goal of getting through a speech truly changed me. At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures.
24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “nemesis” in Paragraph 1
A. Advantage. B. Annoyance. C. Preference. D. Confusion.

A. He began to feel less worried. B. He became a polished speaker.
C. He remained a shy speaker. D. Things became worse for him.
26. What made the author want to speak out on Earth Day
A. It was a good chance to learn science. B. It was a test organised by Toastmasters.
C. He must rise up to defend his job. D. He couldn’t have people attacking science.
27. What lesson did the author draw from his successful speech
A. Frustration can be stepping stones to success.
B. Science can lead us to make wonderful changes.
C. Any difficulty can be overcome with great efforts.
D. Passion can motive us to achieve the unachievable.

Cats aren’t known for their sensitivity. But a new study published in the journal Applied Animal Behaviour Science suggests that our feline friends may care more about us and other pets in the house than we give them credit for. What it found was that cats responded to the loss in a way that looked strikingly similar to mourning.
To dig deeper into this phenomenon, a team led by psychologist Jennifer Vonk and her co-author Brittany Greene embarked on a comprehensive investigation. They surveyed 412 cat owners or caregivers, asking them how their cat reacted after the death of another pet in the house. Participants used a five-point scale to indicate changes in the cats’ behaviours in the days and weeks after the death. The recorded behaviours were numerous: altered sleep, eating and playing habits, increased vocalisation, spending more time alone, seeking human attention by sitting or lying near them, showing fear or curiosity, interacting with remaining pets, grooming changes, and even searching for the lost pet by sniffing its usual spots.
Respondents were also asked to describe the relationships between the cat and the deceased pet, as well as their own bonds and grief. This indicated that cats form connections and respond emotionally to loss.
It seems cats get sad when a companion dies, though it’s hard to prove this. Some cats changed their eating and playing habits. Others sought more human interaction. And some even searched the house for their missing family members, lingering around the places where they used to play or sleep. Still, Jennifer cautions that there could be other reasons for the changes in the behaviour besides cats’ grief. They might be eating more because they now have more access to the food bowl, or they might be playing less because they no longer have a playmate.
But, she says, even if they do experience grief, it’s probably different from the kind that humans feel. It’s more likely they’re noticing that something has changed in their social environment, and they are responding to the change with feelings of fear or anxiety.
28. What is the main finding of the study on cats
A. Cats are very emotionally stable animals.
B. Cats react only by changing their eating habits.
C. Cats avoid interaction with humans after a pet dies.
D. Cats might display mourning behaviours like humans.
29. What was the method used by researchers to gather data
A. Conducting interviews with professionals.
B. Asking cat owners about their cats’ changes.
C. Studying the cats’ interactions with their owners.
D. Observing the cats in a controlled environment.
30. According to the study, which of the following behaviours may be unrelated to grief
A. Sitting or lying near humans. B. Seeking more interaction with humans.
C. Eating more when there is food around. D. Searching the house for the missing pet.
31. Why does Jennifer think cats react emotionally to another pet’s loss
A. They are experiencing the same grief as humans.
B. They feel abandoned and fearful when left alone.
C. They respond to changes in their social environment.
D. They have developed strong friendships with other pets.
D
The United States contribution to coastal plastic pollution world-wide is significantly larger than previously thought, possibly by as much as five times, according to a study published Friday.
According to the research, published in Science Advances, two factors contributed to the sharp increase: Americans are using more plastic than ever and the current study included pollution produced by United States exports of plastic waste, while the earlier one did not.
The United States, which does not have sufficient infrastructure (基础建设) to handle its recycling demands at home, exports about half of its recyclable waste. Of the total exported, about 88 percent ends up in countries considered to have inadequate waste management.
“When you consider how much of our plastic waste isn’t actually recyclable because it is low-value, polluted or difficult to process, it’s not surprising that a lot of it ends up polluting the environment,” said the study’s lead author, Kara Lavender Law, research professor of oceanography at Sea Education Association, in a statement.
The study estimates that in 2016, the United States contributed between 1.1 and 2.5 million tons of plastic waste to the oceans through a combination of littering, dumping and mismanaged exports.
At a minimum, that’s almost double the total estimated waste in the team’s previous study. At the high end, it would be a fivefold increase over the earlier estimate.
The ranges are wide partly because “there’s no real standard for being able to provide good quality data on collection and disposal of waste in general,” said Ted Siegler, a resource economist at DSM Environmental Solutions, a consulting firm, and an author of the study.
Mr. Siegler said the researchers had evaluated waste-disposal practices in countries around the world and used their “best professional judgment” to determine the lowest and highest amounts of plastic waste likely to escape into the environment. They settled on a range of 25 percent to 75 percent.
Tony Walker, an associate professor at the Dalhousie University School for Resource and Environmental Studies in Halifax, Nova Scotia, said that analyzing waste data can amount to a “data minefield (危机四伏的局面)” because there are no data standards across municipalities. Moreover, once plastic waste is shipped overseas, he said, data is often not recorded at all.
Nonetheless, Dr. Walker, who was not involved in the study, said it could offer a more accurate accounting of plastic pollution than the previous study, which likely underestimated the United States’ contribution. “They’ve put their best estimate, as accurate as they can be with this data,” he said, and used ranges, which underscores that the figures are estimates.
32. According to the research, what has made the US contribution to coastal plastic pollution higher than thought
A. More unrecyclable plastic waste has been produced.
B. Some once excluded data is now included in the study.
C. Americans have begun to export plastic waste recently.
D. People have no device at home to dispose of plastic waste.
33. The total estimated plastic waste was ___________ according to the team’s previous study.
A. about 0.26 million tons B. about 0.55 million tons
C. about 1.1 million tons D. about 2.2 million tons
34. Why is there a wide range in the team’s estimate
A. Countries around the world vary a lot in the amount of plastic waste.
B. More plastic waste has escaped into the environment than before.
C. No such data-related standard is widely acknowledged.
D. The team hopes to give a possible prospect.
35. It can be inferred from the passage that Tony Walker ___________.
A. doesn’t think the team’s estimates are that accurate
B. underestimates the US contribution to plastic waste
C. doesn’t think that the team should provide such estimates
D. feels regretful that he hasn’t been involved in the study

We sometimes take our loved ones’ concern for granted and show our worst mood to the family. During my growth, an experience in senior high school stood out in my memory.
As a taxi driver, my dad drove through chaotic streets with heavy traffic. Sometimes he had to deal with rude passengers and struggle with thin income. Despite these, he never complained. Dad was devoted to our family and cared much about us. The sunflower keychain I had given him as a Father’s Day gift in fifth grade had long lost its shine. Yet he had it attached to his leather belt everywhere he went. Every day, he simply headed out early in his worn-out uniform with two patches (补丁) and returned late with a tired but warm smile. When we joked about his “fashionable patches”, he’d laugh and say, “These are my medals of honor!”
As I entered senior high school, my world became overwhelming. Math problems danced in my head. My grades didn’t improve but even declined. School pressures skyrocketed. Even small things would set me off. Dad’s daily “How’s school today ” felt like another weight on my back. I was mean to his inquiries, even though I knew he meant well.
One day after a frustrating exam, I returned home, my backpack strap (肩带) cutting into my shoulder. Dad was calculating the taxi bills then. “Hey,” he said, with a smile on his face, “How is …”
“STOP IT!” The words exploded out of me. “You’re always in my business! Can’t you just ... leave me ALONE ”
He froze. The pen he was holding rolled off the table. His face fell, as if I’d thrown cold water on him. Then he stood up slowly and walked to his room. The door shut softly—not a slam (砰地关上), just a quiet click—that somehow hurt me worse.
I was shocked myself and my eyes fell on the keychain, my mind racing. ______________________________

The most common form of traveling overseas nowadays is by airplane. To ensure a pleasurable trip, travelers have to be familiar with the entire procedure from booking tickets to coping with in-flight emergencies. To start with, there are a number of factors that have an effect on travelers’ choices about airlines, including the service, the airfare, and the length of time to destination. Once you’ve booked the ticket, you need to arrive at the airport at least one hour in advance. After that, check your luggage at the main ticket counter and get your boarding pass. When these two things are done, travelers have to pass through the security checkpoint where an X-ray machine is ready to scan if there are any prohibited items. This is for all passengers’ safety. Then go towards the gate to wait for boarding. After travelers go on board, there are still a few things that need to be kept in mind. The plane is equipped with emergency exits, life jackets under the seats, and oxygen masks overhead. Remember to read the safety instructions card that is put in the pocket of the seat in front of you.

A. Advantage. B. Annoyance. C. Preference. D. Confusion.
25. How did the author behave towards public speaking after leaving Toastmasters
B 25. C 26. D 27. D
根据第一段中“During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting.(在大学期间和我最初的几份工作中,当我必须做报告或主持会议时,我会感到异常紧张。)”
根据第二段中“At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work. (在每次会议上,我们都被迫与其他演讲者竞争奖项。你可能会认为我在经历这些之后会成为一名出色的演说家,但这些经历似乎都不起作用)”可知,作者在Toastmasters练习并参加很多比赛,但是仍然没有成为一个娴熟的演讲者,仍然无法克服障碍,还是腼腆无法表达。故选C项。
26. 细节理解题。根据第三段中“It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speakout. (直到最近,当科学和科学机构在疫情大流行期间受到不公平的理由的攻击帮助时,我才决定我必须发声)”可知,因为自己所在国家的科学和科研机构受到言论攻击,这使作者要挺身而出捍卫科学,不能任由人们攻击科学。故选D项。
27. 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures. (在将近四十岁的时候,我明白了激情可以点燃我心中的火焰,去做我从未梦想过的事情。导致我演讲的黑暗一定会带来新的机会和冒险)”可知,作者意识到激情能够燃烧内心的火焰,然自己做到曾经不可能完成的事情。故选D项。

D 29. B 30. C 31. C
根据第一段最后一句“What it found was that cats responded to the loss in a way that looked strikingly similar to mourning.(研究发现,猫对损失的反应与哀悼惊人地相似。)”
根据第二段中的“They surveyed 412 cat owners or caregivers, asking them how their cat reacted after the death of another pet in the house. Participants used a five-point scale to indicate changes in the cats’ behaviours in the days and weeks after the death. (他们调查了412名猫主人或看护者,询问他们的猫在家里另一只宠物死亡后的反应。参与者使用五分制来指示猫在死后几天和几周内的行为变化。)”可知,研究人员对412名养猫人士展开调查,询问他们在家中另一只宠物死后,他们的猫有何反应、行为有何变化,然后据此进行数据收集。故选B。
30. 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“Still, Jennifer cautions that there could be other reasons for the changes in the behaviour besides cats’ grief. They might be eating more because they now have more access to the food bowl, or they might be playing less because they no longer have a playmate. (不过,珍妮弗提醒说,除了猫的悲伤之外,可能还有其他原因导致猫的行为变化。他们可能会吃得更多,因为他们现在有更多的机会接触到食物碗,或者他们可能会玩得更少,因为他们不再有玩伴。)”可知,猫的行为变化可能还有其他原因,比如因为更容易获取食物而吃得更多,但这一行为和悲伤无关。故选C。
31. 细节理解题。根据最后一段“But, she says, even if they do experience grief, it’s probably different from the kind that humans feel. It’s more likely they’re noticing that something has changed in their social environment, and they are responding to the change with feelings of fear or anxiety.

B 33. B 34. C 35. A
根据第二段“According to the research, published in Science Advances, two factors contributed to the sharp increase:Americans are using more plastic than ever and the current study included pollution produced by United States exports of plastic waste, while the earlier one did not.(根据发表在《科学进展》上的研究,有两个因素导致了塑料的急剧增加:美国人使用的塑料比以往任何时候都多,目前的研究包括了美国出口塑料废物产生的污染,而之前的研究没有)”可知,因为现在的研究包含了之前未考虑的数据,所以美国对沿海塑料污染的“贡献”比之前认为的要高。故选B项。
根据第五段“The study estimates that in 2016, the United States contributed between 1.1 and 2.5 million tons of plastic waste to the oceans through a combination of littering, dumping and mismanaged exports.(该研究估计,2016年,美国通过乱扔垃圾、倾倒和管理不善的出口向海洋排放了110万至250万吨塑料废物)”以及第六段“At a minimum, that’s almost double the total estimated waste in the team’s previous study.(至少,这几乎是该团队之前研究中估计的垃圾总量的两倍)”可计算出之前研究中估计的塑料垃圾总量约为1.1÷2=0.55百万吨。故选B项。
根据第七段“The ranges are wide partly because ‘there’s no real standard for being able to provide good quality data on collection and disposal of waste in general,’ said Ted Siegler, a resource economist at DSM Environmental Solutions, a consulting firm, and an author of the study. (DSM Environmental Solutions的资源经济学家、该研究的作者泰德·西格勒(Ted Siegler)表示,范围很广,部分原因是‘总体上没有能够提供高质量废物收集和处置数据的真正标准’)”可知,数据范围广是因为没有被广泛认可的数据相关标准。故选C项。
35. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Nonetheless, Dr. Walker, who was not involved in the study, said it could offer a more accurate accounting of plastic pollution than the previous study, which likely underestimated the United States’ contribution. ‘They’ve put their best estimate, as accurate as they can be with this data,’ he said, and used ranges, which underscores that the figures are estimates.(然而,没有参与这项研究的沃克博士说,与之前可能低估了美国贡献的研究相比,这项研究能更准确地计算塑料污染。他说:‘他们给出了最好的估计,在这些数据的基础上尽可能准确’,并使用了范围,这强调了这些数字是估计值)”可知,沃克博士认为研究团队的估计是基于现有数据尽可能准确的,但也只是估计,言外之意是他认为这些估计并非绝对准确。故选A项。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I was shocked myself and my eyes fell on the keychain, my mind racing. ______________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I knocked at the door and it opened. ___________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1
I was shocked myself and my eyes fell on the keychain, my mind racing. The faded sunflower, once golden and bright, now mirrored Dad’s silent sacrifices. Memories flooded in: him skipping meals to pay for my textbooks, his cracked hands gripping the steering wheel, and the way he proudly called his patches “medals.” My outburst replayed in my head, sharp and ugly. Guilt gnawed at me as I realized his questions weren’t prying—they were his lifeline to my world. The quiet click of the door echoed louder than any argument.
Paragraph 2
I knocked at the door and it opened. Dad sat on the edge of his bed, the sunflower keychain trembling in his hands. “I… I’m sorry,” I choked out. He looked up, eyes weary but soft. “I just wanted to know you’re okay,” he murmured. Tears blurred my vision as I hugged him, his patched uniform rough against my cheek. “Your medals are real,” I whispered. He laughed, a warm sound that melted the tension. From then on, his “How’s school ” became a bridge, not a burden.
