(2024·安徽黄山模拟)
Living in a city, you may face fewer parking spaces, more pollution, less personal space, and more traffic and noise, all of which contribute to higher stress levels, often translating to aggression (好斗情绪).And now, researchers have found evidence that this behavior applies to song sparrows (歌雀) too.But it comes with a surprising benefit to the youngest generation of city sparrows.
There are fewer city-living song sparrows than in the countryside.
However, the increased aggression observed in the males can be connected to a more pressing need to defend territories in urban settings. But that increased aggression doesn't mean the males fail in their duties as fathers. In fact, the researchers were surprised to find that the opposite may be true.
“Male songbirds are thought to reduce parental care when they are more aggressive.Yet this study showed that urban male song sparrows provided more care for their young,”says Dr Samuel Lane, lead author of the study.“Against our expectations,we found that they visited nests more often and were more successful parents than the males in the countryside.”
The researchers carried out their studies at six sites across southwest Virginia, the USA,across four breeding (繁殖) seasons. They found that the high survival rate of their chicks was subject to many factors. Not only did male sparrows visit their nests more often, but they also began feeding chicks earlier in the day.Despite the challenges of being a city bird, hatching success was observed to be higher in urban habitats. And even though brood parasitism, one species laying eggs in the nest of another,is typically higher in urban areas, the researchers observed that rates of nest predation, the act of other animals eating eggs or young birds, were lower, further contributing to the overall nesting success of these sparrows.
Lane said,“Our study adds to growing evidence that certain species of songbirds even benefit from living in urban environments when there is enough green space for them to find food and nest locations.”
The team hope ongoing research in this area will contribute to the establishment of urban environments aimed at offering improved support for wildlife.

A professor at the University of South Florida recently published a paper she knew barely anyone would read.At least, not outside her field. The paper had to do with the impact of algae (海藻) blooms and depletion (退化) of coral reefs on the region's tourism industry.
The work of completing the paper was _____,says Heather O'Leary. It involved tracking visitors'reactions to the environment on social media.“Part of the data for months was just reading posts:dead fish, dead fish, dead fish,”she recalled.“We were really thinking every day about the Gulf of Mexico and the waters that surround us,about those risks, and the risks to our coastal economy.”
glum
O'Leary wanted people to pay attention to her paper and raise their environmental awareness. But she couldn't come up with any solutions. However, attending concerts at USF's School of Music inspired and gladdened her.She reached out to its director of bands,Matthew McCutchen.“I'm studying climate change and what's going down at the coral reefs,”he remembered her saying.“And I've got all this data from my paper and I'd like to know if there's any way that we can turn it into music. So people can know about my paper.”
Indeed there was.Composition professor Paul Reller worked with students to map pitch, rhythm and duration to the data.It came alive,O'Leary said,in ways it simply couldn't be done on a spreadsheet.
“My students were really excited to start thinking about how students from other majors, such as the music students, heard patterns that they did not normally hear in some of the repetitions,”she said.In this case, she said, the patterns revealed the economic impact of pollution on coastal Florida communities.
“With music,”she added,“you can start to sense with different parts of your mind and your body that there are patterns happening and that they're important.”“The world is going to see more and more of these‘wicked problems’,the ones that take multiple people with different types of training and backgrounds to solve.”
Now,a group of professors and students are working to bring together music and the environment in related projects, such as an augmented (增强的) reality experience based on this composition. The group wants to spread awareness about the algae blooms, data literacy (数据认知) and environmental protection.

Virginia's McAfee Knob is one of the most famous spots along the Appalachian Trail, offering a beautiful view of forests and valleys.Thousands of hikers visit it each year to take in the scenery.Recently,a new agreement was reached to protect much of this view forever. Two conservation groups, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and The Conservation Fund, have bought 850 acres of land from six different owners below the Knob. This area, now called the McAfee Vista Preserve, will not only maintain the view but also help restore wildlife habitats.
Heather Richards from The Conservation Fund expressed joy at the completion of the deal. She praised the cooperation between the organizations involved and the landowners for their commitment to conservation.
McAfee Knob is extremely popular, with around 50,000 visitors annually. It is so iconic that when Google featured the Appalachian Trail in the Doodle on their homepage in October, they used an illustration of McAfee Knob. However, this popularity has led to some challenges. For instance, there have been concerns about garbage attracting bears and the need for better management of visitor numbers and facilities.
This recent acquisition is part of ongoing efforts by the ATC to protect views along the trail.Over the past four years, they, along with partners like The Conservation Fund and the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club, have purchased about 1,300 acres from various landowners.
However, the funding for this purchase has raised some controversy (争议).A significant part of the money came from the Mountain Valley Pipeline project, which has faced opposition due to its potential impact on the environment.Despite initially opposing the plan, the ATC entered into an agreement with its developers to receive funding for conservation efforts.
The ATC also received support from other sources, such as the Virginia Outdoors Foundation's Forest CORE Fund and donations from members of both the ATC and the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club.

Coral reefs are the rainforests of the ocean. They exist on vast scales and are equally important havens(避风港)of biodiversity.Reefs occupy 0.1% of the oceans. 1 .
2 Without the protection which reefs afford from crashing waves,low-lying islands such as the Maldives would have flooded long ago,and a billion people would lose food or income. However, reefs are under threat from rising sea temperatures.Heat causes the algae (海藻) with which corals are living together to generate toxins (毒素) that force those corals to leave. This can causes a coral's death.
Research groups around the world are coming up with plans of action to see if that will help, such as identifying naturally heat-resistant corals and cross-breeding such corals to create a new type. 3 Without carbon reduction and a decline in local,coral-killing pollution, even resistant corals will not survive the century.
Doubters doubt humanity will get its act together in time to make a great difference.
4 Carbon targets are being set and ocean pollution is being dealt with.Countries that share responsibilities for reefs are starting to act together.Scientific workarounds can also be found.Natural currents can be applied to facilitate mass breeding.Sites of the greatest ecological and economical importance can be identified to maximize bang for the buck.
This mix of natural activities and human intervention is important. 5 Hard-core greens—those who think that all habitats should be kept unspoiled—may not approve. But when entire ecosystems are facing destruction, the cost of doing nothing is too great to bear.
A.Coral is useful to people.
B.But there are grounds for optimism.
C.And they host a quarter of marine species.
D.It could serve as a blueprint for other ecosystems.
E.Coral's global ecosystem services are worth up to $10trn a year.
F.This research can also be brought to bear on trying to save entire ecosystems.

(2024·江苏南通模拟)
Everyone can help their community in their little way, just like David did.
The young barber likes to give back to his community by providing free haircuts to residents in his community and sharing nice conversations with them.
But it was different when it was time for Lucy's haircut. The young barber remembered Lucy,a young lady living beside the community park, and how he watched her work day after day when he was younger. At the back of his mind,David always knew he would do something for this hard-working lady someday.
Armed with a chair and his haircutting tools,David set up a sidewalk shop and gave a free haircut to his neighbourhood.
While Lucy came to have a haircut, she shared how it had been hard for her and her family. She lost loved ones.Lucy was ill herself, and being sick meant not being able to work for almost two months.
To help Lucy and other residents in the neighbourhood,David gave Lucy $100 in cash and set up a GoFundMe account.
Lucy truly appreciated the behaviour and still got emotional whenever she recalled that memorable free haircut and cash gift.It warmed her heart to know that a young man like David listened to what she had to say and lent her a hand.
But this was not where the heart-warming story between David and Lucy ended.Ever since that summer,David has realized that he still had more surprises to give the neighbourhood, particularly to Lucy.
David had noticed that Lucy was hiding her smile whenever they talked. She didn't dare to smile widely because of her teeth, which, according to her, were kind of ugly.
Lucy shared how often she would get comments from her customers about her teeth. One time,a young customer just lost his tooth, and Lucy joked that both of them didn't have teeth.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
However,David decided to change that._____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Lucy had never seen a dentist (牙医) before. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2.续写线索:联系牙医——牙医愿意提供帮助——看牙医——更自信——感激
【参考范文】
However,David decided to change that. Although he regularly showed up in the neighbourhood to provide free haircuts to the neighbourhood,David had also been busy arranging for Lucy to receive a new set of teeth. He reached out to a dentist,Dr.Sofia Rodriguez, who felt it a must to help after learning about Lucy's past and current situation.David drove Lucy to her dental appointment and made sure that his friend wouldn't pay for anything to get her much-needed false teeth.
Lucy had never seen a dentist (牙医) before. So it was important for David to accompany his friend to her appointment at a clinic where they spoke Spanish so that Lucy would be comfortable. Now,Lucy feels more confident and doesn't hesitate to give everyone her new winning smile, which she is still getting used to.David understands the importance of gratitude, and he's so grateful to the people that have been supporting him in this little project to give back to the community.
