(2024·江苏南通模拟)
We all know eating ultra-processed foods that make our lives easier—such as sauces, and frozen pizza—isn't good for our health.Studies have found they can raise our risk of obesity, heart problems, diabetes and cancer. They may even shorten our lives. Now,a new study has revealed eating more ultra-processed foods may contribute to overall cognitive decline, including the brain executive functioning—the ability to process information and make decisions.
“While in need of further study, the new results are quite compelling and emphasize the critical role for proper nutrition in preserving and promoting brain health and reducing risk for brain diseases,”said Tanzi, professor at Harvard Medical School. He was not involved in the study but he said in his book,“They are very high in sugar, salt and fat, promoting systemic inflammation, perhaps the most major threat to healthy aging.Meanwhile, since they are convenient and quick, they also replace fiber foods important for maintaining the health and balance of bacteria in your gut,”he added,“which is particularly important for brain health and reducing risk of age-related brain diseases like Alzheimer's disease.”
The study, presented at the 2023 Alzheimer's Association International Conference, followed over 10,000 Brazilians for 10 years.“In Brazil,ultra-processed foods make up 25% to 30% of total calorie intake. We have McDonald's and Burger King.It is not very different from many other Western countries,”said co-author Dr.Suemoto.Ultra-processed foods are defined as“industrial formulations of food substances containing little or no whole foods and typically include flavorings, colorings and other chemical additives,”according to the study.
“People consuming over 20% of daily calories from processed foods had a 28% faster decline in global cognition and a 25% faster decline in executive functioning compared to people who not,”said study co-author Natalia. Those in the study who ate the most ultra-processed foods were“more likely to be younger, women, white, had higher education and incomes, and were more likely to have never smoked,”the study found.
“People need to know they should cook more,”Suemoto said.“And it's worth it because you're going to protect your heart and guard your brain,”she added.

“I know when to go out,and when to stay in...”English rock star David Bowie once confidently sang in his hit single. When it comes to consuming food, the decisiveness claimed by the singer-songwriter is hard to achieve.I disagree with the statement and argue it's better to eat out than to order home delivery.
To begin with, when setting foot in a restaurant,we're immediately greeted not only by a server ready to seat us,but by a flood of physical feelings—the eyes take in the internal decoration of the place, the nose breathes in the pleasant smell of food and the ears pick up on competing sounds of customer chatter and attractive in-store music. To eat out is to experience an atmosphere unique to each restaurant.Something as special as that simply can't be reproduced by ordering home delivery.Eating out is,without doubt, the more exciting and thus a better choice.
Eating out becomes even more appealing when staying home proves too painful.Whether it is because we need a temporary getaway from our family or because we simply want to spend some quality time outside with loved ones, going out for a meal can be a break from the hard labour of domestic living.
We could take it as an opportunity for self-care—to treat ourselves by dressing up,arriving in style at a fancy restaurant and ordering a slightly more luxurious meal to refresh our weary soul.Ordering home delivery would only contribute to feelings of being penned in while eating out is an escape for the trapped individual.Food delivery app users reason that it's troublesome and less convenient to dress up and eat out.
However,it's worth noting we may not always get our food in the most satisfactory condition when opting for home delivery. There's a risk of receiving food orders with missing items or even entirely wrong orders that can't be sent back. What we sacrifice for convenience might just wind up being inconvenient.Consequently,it makes more sense to eat out rather than risk disappointment by ordering home delivery.

Chinese food is becoming more and more popular all over the world.Among the diverse Chinese foods,I prefer to introduce a popular food—malatang.
Malatang originated in Sichuan Province but it is so popular in China now that it's easy to find a restaurant with malatang. However, versions can be different from one city to another. It is a typical feature that vegetables and meat are served and customers are free to pick out what they like before cooking.Owing to the free choices, customers can definitely enjoy their favourite food.Another feature is its delicious taste, which is similar to the hot pot.By the way,it costs less than the hot pot.
In a word, malatang will live up to your expectation, especially for the people fond of Sichuan cuisine.

(2025·安徽部分中学联考)
An increasingly popular way of eating called reducetarianism may sound like a new weight loss trend. But that's not the goal;instead, reducetarianism is about cutting down the amount of meat you eat and making small changes that are healthy for you and the planet.“But the vast majority don't want to go vegan,”says Brian Kateman,
co-founder of the Reducetarian Foundation. So he has a simple message for us,“Don't let perfection be the enemy of the good.”Compared with a vegetarian, reducetarians take a more flexible approach that acknowledges challenges of giving up meat entirely but still limits meat when possible.
The opposite side of eating less meat is eating more plant foods.Animal products often replace fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, leading to lack of nutrients from them.A more plant-based diet can help lower the risk of health problems including heart disease, colon cancer, and obesity. And research shows the climate impact from raising plant-based foods is less than that caused by animal-based foods. This is largely because it takes much more land, water, and other resources to produce a pound of meat than plant protein, says Dana Ellis,a dietitian.
The type of meat you buy matters too.Grass-fed meat—from animals raised without antibiotics (抗生素)—tends to be the more sustainable options.By grazing, cows encourage grass growth and nutrient turnover in the soil, which may help offset cattle's climate impact, according to a study published in 2021.
Looking for local produce that requires no air transport and cutting down the food waste are also significant aspects of being a reducetarian. The message of reducetarianism is that you don't have to be perfect to help yourself and the planet by making small changes in how you eat and shop for food. And that's something we all can accomplish.

A Simple Trick to Resist Junk Food
You're tired and hungry. Then you catch something delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening. It is fried chicken! 1 A new research says that being exposed to the smell of junk food for at least two minutes can actually help you make healthier food choices.
Have you ever noticed that whatever appetizing treat catches your nose's attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it?What will happen if you're standing in line after a couple of minutes? 2 And recent science says that this is actually the right moment to walk away.
The results of a series of experiments show that extended exposure of more than two minutes to junk food smell leads to lower purchases of unhealthy foods compared with healthy smell. 3 That is why long exposure to junk food smell can be as satisfactory as actually having it in your mouth.
4 When the exposure to smell of healthy food was examined, food choices were not profoundly influenced. The reason for this is that healthy food is not connected with reward in our brain and therefore has little influence on what we desire.
So next time you're feeling you don't have the willpower to resist that French fries,it might be as simple as sitting there and smelling all that sweetness for just a minute or two. 5 .
A.But wait a minute before you order.
B.It's a response that has been researched.
C.Get the satisfaction with none of the junk food.
D.It isn't quite as irresistible as it was just moments ago.
E.However,it's not the same case with smell of healthy food.
F.The brain doesn't necessarily tell apart a pleasurable smell or taste.
G.It's the same as actually eating it because your desire to eat it is satisfied.

I worked at a local university and our office was staffed with a few student workers. One of the students was a member of an amateur soccer team that needed a player. She overheard me talking to another student about how I'd always wanted to play soccer, but never got the chance. The soccer player offered to let me come and try out for the position.
I was excited and scared.Excited at the thought of doing something I'd always wanted to do,but scared that I was too out of shape and too old to keep up with athletic twenty-year-olds.There was no harm trying out, though.I agreed to be on the field for practice.
My husband and children thought I was crazy but I didn't care.I didn't move much while doing my job at the university and I'd just taken up running to turn back the clock a little.I had all the mom responsibilities, too.Between my work and family responsibilities, finding time for myself seemed impossible, but I knew playing soccer with kids would motivate me to keep active.
I showed up with butterflies in my stomach and low expectations.I just knew once they saw how out of shape I was, they'd let me kick the ball a few times and then look for a younger girl.During drills,I was slow and got breathless easily, but my desire to do that made me drive forward.Maybe they were touched by my spirit or maybe they just needed a player—they let me in anyhow.
I couldn't have been happier! They took my shirt size, jersey (球衣) number and my team name.I chose“Mama Platt”because it was what a couple of the students called me,and I chose my dad's soccer number from high school:7.I still remember the moment I stood in a sporting goods store. Was that really happening?I couldn't believe it.These girls were actually going to let me be a part of the team!

In order not to let my team down,I decided to improve myself. I ran as much as I could around my neighborhood to get in better shape and improve my speed.Passing the ball was the most challenging part for me because I was not flexible enough,so I did much practice in private. When it was time for the team drill,I would always show up on time and try my best to cooperate with my teammates. After months of practice,I was able to do my part successfully!Anyway,I felt prepared for the coming games!
We won our first game, our second and our third. Some nights we played two games back to back.It was exciting, tiring and the most fun I had ever had in my life!We only lost once during the entire season and ended up winning the championship. It was the experience of a lifetime!I turned thirty-nine years old while playing soccer with college kids.I remember driving home after the last game and realizing that taking chances could open doors to opportunities you had never considered possible!
