Think of a typical college physics course:notetaking, homework struggles and studying for difficult exams. Now imagine access to a tutor (导师) who answers questions at any hour, never tires and never judges.Might you learn more? The AI-supported tutor is surprisingly more effective. That's the unexpected conclusion from a Harvard study examining learning outcomes for students in a large physics course.
The study was led by lecturer Gregory Kestin and Kelly Miller, who analyzed learning outcomes of 194 students registered in fall 2023 in Kestin's Physical Sciences 2 course. Before the study, the team created instructions for the AI tutor to follow for each lesson so it'd behave like an experienced instructor.
The students were divided into two groups, each of whom experienced two lessons in continual weeks.During the first week,Group 1 participated in an instructor-guided active learning classroom lesson, while Group 2 engaged with an AI-supported lesson at home that followed a research-informed design;conditions were changed oppositely the following week.
“We went into the study curious about whether our AI tutor could be as effective as in-person instructors,” Kestin said.“I certainly didn't expect students to find the AI-powered lesson more engaging. But that's exactly what happened:Not only did the AI tutor seem to help students learn more materials, the students also self-reported more engagement when working with AI.”
The researchers found that learning gains for students in the AI-tutored group were about double those for students in the in-class group. The researchers believe students'ability to get personalized feedback (反馈) and self pace with the AI tutor are advantages.“In various in-class settings, students with a strong background in the material may be less engaged, and they're sometimes bored,” Miller said.“Students without the background sometimes struggle to keep up.So the fact that this AI tutor can be supportive of that difference is probably the biggest thing.”
“However,AI could also hurt learning if we're not careful,” Kestin said.“AI tutors shouldn't ‘think'for students, but rather help them build critical thinking skills.AI tutors shouldn't replace in-person instruction, but help all students better prepare for it.”
4.What were the participants required to do in the study?( )
A.Make a choice between two courses.
B.Instruct the AI tutor in learning skills.
C.Report their partners'feelings.
D.Study with different tutors in turn.
5.What did Kestin most probably think of their findings?( )
A.Valueless. B.Doubtful.
C.Confusing. D.Surprising.
6.What might probably lead to students'less engagement in class according to the text?
( )
A.Inexperienced in-class instructors.
B.Knowing the materials well in advance.
C.Feeling bored with AI's questions.
D.Their struggles with the teacher.
7.What can we learn from what Kestin said?( )
A.There exists the potential misuse of AI.
B.Researchers are more positive about AI.
C.AI tutors should develop critical thinking.
D.In-person instruction benefits students more.

(2024·山东日照模拟)
The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content.A small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling,a psychologist who works with youths that experience anxiety disorders.
Social media has a reinforcing nature. The platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even physical illnesses. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick?
“The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites,” Sperling says.“When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat.” To boost self-esteem and feel a sense of belonging in their social circles, people post content with the hope of receiving positive feedback.FOMO—fear of missing out—also plays a role.Teenagers hope to keep track of friends'activities.Missing experiences can create anxiety and depression.
The earlier teens start using social media, the greater impact they have on mental health. This is especially true for females. While teen males tend to express aggression physically, females do so by excluding others and sharing hurtful comments.Social media increases the opportunity for such harmful interactions.
In addition, social media puts a lens filter (滤镜) on appearances and reality. When there's a filter applied to the digital world,it can be hard for teens to tell what's real and what isn't,which comes at a tough time for them physically and emotionally.
We can benefit from social platforms to some extent,as they allow people to stay in touch with family and friends around the world.Still, the platforms have opened a “Pandora's box” as they continue to evolve more quickly than we can research their impact.
In addition to limiting likes,Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing.Regardless of how likely social media giants are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
8.Why does Instagram limit likes?( )
A.To share more contents.
B.To increase its popularity.
C.To ensure teens'well-being.
D.To reduce teens'online time.
9.What does “Pandora's box” in paragraph 6 imply?( )
A.Social media can be double-edged.
B.People benefit from social platforms.
C.People get boxes of gifts from social platforms.
D.Social media opens a door for people to see the world.
10.Which of the following does Sperling agree with?( )
A.Its lens helps teens to tell the real world.
B.Its unpredictable outcome attracts frequent visits.
C.It is helpful to teens with anxiety and depression.
D.It has a greater impact on female teens than male teens.
11.What will the author most probably talk about next?( )
A.Advice on users'controlling mass sharing.
B.Reasons for teens'posting addictions.
C.Negative effects of harmful interactions.
D.Ways of social media giants'management.

(2025·河南许平汝名校联考)
“We went into the study curious about whether our AI tutor could be as effective as in-person instructors,”Kestin said.“I certainly didn't expect students to find the AI-powered lesson more engaging. But that's exactly what happened:Not only did the AI tutor seem to help students learn more materials, the students also self-reported more engagement when working with AI.”
The researchers found that learning gains for students in the AI-tutored group were about double those for students in the in-class group. The researchers believe students'ability to get personalized feedback (反馈) and self pace with the AI tutor are advantages.“In various in-class settings, students with a strong background in the material may be less engaged, and they're sometimes bored,”Miller said.“Students without the background sometimes struggle to keep up.So the fact that this AI tutor can be supportive of that difference is probably the biggest thing.”
“However,AI could also hurt learning if we're not careful,”Kestin said.“AI tutors shouldn't‘think'for students, but rather help them build critical thinking skills.AI tutors shouldn't replace in-person instruction, but help all students better prepare for it.”

“The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites,”Sperling says.“When the outcome is unpredictable, the behavior is more likely to repeat.”To boost self-esteem and feel a sense of belonging in their social circles, people post content with the hope of receiving positive feedback.FOMO—fear of missing out—also plays a role.Teenagers hope to keep track of friends'activities.Missing experiences can create anxiety and depression.
We can benefit from social platforms to some extent,as they allow people to stay in touch with family and friends around the world.Still, the platforms have opened a“Pandora's box”as they continue to evolve more quickly than we can research their impact.
In addition to limiting likes,Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing.Regardless of how likely social media giants are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.

9.What does“Pandora's box”in paragraph 6 imply?( )
A.Social media can be double-edged.

Dear fellow students,
I'm Li Hua,chairman of the Students'Union.I'm writing to advocate for all the students to reduce the time of using social media on behalf of the Students'Union of our school.
Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of science and technology, bringing great convenience to our daily communication. However,it is not uncommon that quite a few students attach too much importance to their“virtual”friends on social media, influencing their relationship with friends in real life.Worse still, social media has occupied too much of their spare time, even their study time, doing harm to their academic results.
Please be aware of the problem.Let's use social media properly and limit our time on it.

Social media has completely taken over everyday life, affecting how society runs and changing individuals in ways that even they can feel. While social media can act as a platform for people to express themselves,it can also be overwhelming(令人不知所措的),especially for high school teens.
To teenager Bryson Lan,deleting social media helped eliminate a significant distraction in his routine and keep up with teachers.“I was scrolling (滚动) through social networking sites so much,”Lan said.“I was also starting to struggle since I entered my high school year. When school started,I was super overwhelmed, and I was just not ready for it.”
Most teenagers fear that by eliminating these apps, they will miss out on connections with their peers and feel a significant loss to their social life. However,Lan found he didn't miss anything during his time without social media.
Another problem with social media is the amount of“junk content”posted.People are regularly posting and updating on social media, and much of the content has no meaning to other viewers and is ultimately a time suck.
However, social media isn't all negative.Social media can be a place to develop passions and boost creativity. For example,Lan found his interest in photography blossom after seeing works from other photographers on social media.“Social media is a good place where you can have a portfolio (作品集) or upload your works,”Lan said.“A lot of people have photography accounts or art accounts. In some ways,I think it actually furthers your hobby.”
The vast audience that social media can reach brings convenience and effectiveness in the spread of art.Although some people might be discouraged by other artists'impressive works,Lan is inspired to produce better photographs.
“Thanks to this revolutionary development of social media,we can enjoy a world where everyone is closer than before,”Lan said.“But we also need to have the skills to make good use of social media, and that depends on each person's efforts.”

The degree to which you leave traces (or data) of your online activities is referred to as your digital footprint. 1 What you usually leave behind include the remains of a campfire, your dinner scraps, and the path you carved in the woods while hiking.
In some cases, there's a legal use for your digital footprint, such as website owners and advertisers collecting information about your online habits and purchasing preferences to better accommodate your needs. 2 Perhaps the biggest risk people face online is having their identity stolen.Besides identity theft, criminals can gather enough information about a person to target him for fraud (欺诈).
3 Here are some steps you can take to minimize it.
Don't use your primary email address when creating online accounts. You can create one-off email addresses to make it harder for someone to develop a picture of all the sites and services you use.Another step for you is not to over-share. 4 So you can restrict your social media posts to friends or close contacts only. Finally, don't let websites sell your data.Increasingly, websites are adding privacy tools that prevent you from having your personal information sold to advertisers or shared with partners. 5
A.You're leaving an“active”digital footprint or a“passive”one.
B.You'll need to look for these controls right now,if they exist at all.
C.You probably don't need your personal life to be completely public.
D.It's similar to the evidence you might leave behind after going camping.
E.In the case of your digital footprint, the evidence you leave behind is data.
F.It's inescapable to leave some sort of digital footprint after your online activity.
G.But the data can also be used by hackers, criminals and other immoral actors.

4.C [根据上文“Another step for you is not to over-share.(另一个步骤是不要过度分享。)”可知,空处解释说明不要完全公开个人生活,从而达到不要过度分享的目的。C项“You probably don't need your personal life to be completely public.(你可能不需要把你的个人生活完全公开。)”符合语境。故选C。]
5.B [上文提到了越来越多的网站正在添加隐私工具,此处是说要使用这些工具。B项“You'll need to look for these controls right now,if they exist at all.(你需要马上寻找这些控件,如果它们存在的话。)”符合语境。故选B。]

Steven's kids didn't live in the same state as him and could only send him a little money because they also led a poor life.Unfortunately,Steven experienced constant physical pain after doing hard labor jobs for years, and he needed to take medicine every day.The money his kids offered was only enough for food, and his savings were small.Realizing that he needed more money,Steven decided to get a job again. Finally,he found a job as a doorkeeper. At first, his salary was enough to pay for the groceries and the medicine he needed. However, due to his advanced age,he started to need more medicine, and it cost a whole lot.
To pay the growing bills,Steven began to take things from his home to a second-hand store to get some money. One day,as he was carrying an old radio to the store, his neighbor,Ben,saw him.“Mr.Green,it's so good to see you!How have you been?”Ben asked.“I'm doing great.I'm just selling couple of things I no longer use at home for some cash.Being weak is terrible when you're old,so take care of yourself when you are young, alright?”he said almost jokingly.Ben nodded.
“Thanks for the tip,Mr.Green!”he said before waving goodbye. That same day,Steven was cooking dinner when he heard the doorbell ring.He wasn't expecting anyone,so he curiously walked towards the door.

He then went to Ben's house.“I believe this is yours,”Steven said, showing Ben the check. But Ben shook his head and said the check was Steven's.Seeing Steven's confused face,Ben explained Steven had helped his mom a lot and that he had never had a chance to repay Steven's kindness before. Therefore, when he realized Steven needed help,he decided to reach out.Hearing those words,Steven was so touched that he hugged Ben tightly.
