UNIT 2 Understanding each other
Body language is an essential part of communication and can be just as important as our spoken language exchanges.Body language can be both conscious or unconscious actions,so it is important to make sure your body is sending the same messages as your words to ensure good communication. These actions can strengthen the verbal (口头的) messages you're sending or it can lead to mistrust or confusion—signs of poor communication and misunderstanding.
Body language can make interacting with others and expressing yourself much easier, but it can also introduce new challenges. Some non-verbal signs unintentionally communicate parts of ourselves that we don't want others to know. For example, bad posture or fidgeting (坐立不安) may communicate lack of confidence and something we may not intend for others to know about us.But body language can strengthen our verbal messages and solidify what we are telling others.Facing someone with eye contact or taking notes while someone is speaking can communicate genuine interest.Without these signs, teachers may not be able to assess a student's understanding.
When you're speaking sincerely,it's natural for your body language to respond to your words through gestures or facial expressions. We also use gestures in conversations to tell stories or describe objects, often using hand signals to show how big or small something is.These are largely unconscious, naturally occurring forms of body language.
It can be difficult to communicate confidence in your actions when you may not feel it internally. When you display confident body language, such as good posture or eye contact, even if you're making a conscious effort, studies have shown that it can lead to feeling more confident. When speaking to others, practice controlling impulses to fidget and planting your feet confidently to increase self-esteem.

C.To explain how challenging it is to read body language.
D.To tell teachers how to assess a student's understanding.
3.What does the author intend to tell in the last two paragraphs?( )
A.Hand signals are essential ways to make ourselves understood.
B.Naturally occurring forms of body language makes us confident.

Be yourself and always follow your heart.Never let anyone change who you are. This is the lesson I have learned from my childhood experience when I figured out I wasn't invited to a party.
One day when I got off the bus and saw my friends gather under the tree where the six of us all stood every morning before the first bell. The circle seemed tighter as I approached;the small white invitation cards being quickly slipped into backpacks gave it away.I knew well that Bridget's party was this weekend.Bridget was one of the popular ones and the opposite of me.She had beautiful red hair with fashionable clothes and fine make-up.Being invited to her party meant an honor.
“Hi.” I responded, but that one word already sounded empty with disappointment.
Thankfully, the bell rang and I hurried toward English class. But I couldn't concentrate. Why hadn't she invited me?My feet were too big? No.Maybe it's my hair.Maybe it's my coat.I tried to think of any interactions I'd had with Bridget recently.A few days earlier,we'd been partners during a sixth-period project.I focused on getting the project done, and she was absorbed in fashion magazines, sometimes saying,“You are so serious. You should smile more.”
But what does it really matter?Maybe I should smile and hug more but I just can't get into hugging people unless I know them really well.
Then the day before the party, three girls that had been invited to the party couldn't go.Then the whispers began, about who might be chosen in their places.
After school,my friend Becky found me in the bus lines.Breathlessly, she said Bridget told her at lunch maybe she was going to invite me to her party.I didn't know what she had meant before she ran away.

“Hi.”I responded, but that one word already sounded empty with disappointment.
At that time,I saw Bridget walking toward the bus lines, then stopping.

Bridget held out an invitation,“Will you come to my party?”she asked with a smile.

At that time,I saw Bridget walking toward the bus lines, then stopping. I pretended not to notice her and looked straight towards the street.I felt a hand on my arm.“Hi,”Bridget greeted me with her face a little embarrassed.“Hi,”I just responded unwillingly and perfunctorily. But no more words between us.After a while,Bridget said,“Do you know that I will hold a party this weekend?I'm so sorry that I forgot to invite you at first.”Silence again.
Bridget held out an invitation,“Will you come to my party?”she asked with a smile. I looked at the small envelope, relishing the moment. But my mind was a jumble. Now she wanted me to come to her party, but I was just filling a space.“Take it,”I thought.“You know you want to go.”I hesitated. But finally,I said no.Now that she hadn't invited me initially,it must be because I was not the right person that she really wanted to invite. So there was no need for me to please her.I just wanted to be myself and always followed my heart.I had already found the pleasure of being myself.

Here are four student podcasts (播客) that offer a glimpse into the minds of students and what they say about news concerning climate in their communities—and what they hope to do about it.
Behind the Scenes of the Mosquito Fire
In a 10-episode series,a sixth-grade class at the Georgetown School of Innovation in Georgetown,Calif.,shares stories from the damaging Mosquito Fire in 2022.This group of eight students asks two firefighters from the Georgetown Fire Department what it's like to fight fires and protect loved ones in their hometown.
Fires:Set Ablaze
At Chautauqua Elementary, the Vashon fifth-graders talk about the far-reaching and lasting impact of wildfires and wildfire smoke—and the direct effects on their lives, like waiting for the school bus on a smoky day.The students also interview experts and share their research on wildfire precautions
Flowing Through Time
In this podcast from Peak Academy,a group of eight middle schoolers reports on dealing with water shortages in Bozeman,Montana. They trace the history of their growing hometown's water supply, which has been dependent on mountain snowmelt. As that source becomes less reliable in a warming world, the students turn to the grown-ups to ask what they can do to conserve water.
Washed Away
The deadly flooding in eastern Kentucky last year forever changed the lives of high schoolers Ryley Bowman,Carolina Johnson and Hunter Noble. The three classmates at Morgan County High School in West Liberty,Ky.,share first-hand accounts of their own and their family's experiences during the floods.

Passive-aggressive (消极抗拒) behaviour can feel“normal”—especially if it's how we've grown up seeing others around us deal with relationship issues.Whether done verbally (言语上) or non-verbally,passive aggression is meant to avoid hurting someone else's feelings, escape conflict,or show disagreement without being outspoken in it.
It's a more common way of dealing with things than you might think. But why are we passive-aggressive?What are the signs we can look out for to recognise being passive-aggressive?And how does it affect us?
There are many reasons why someone might display passive-aggressive behaviour, including insecurity or fear of losing control,as well as using it as a way to handle feelings of stress, anxiety,or depression. It can also be a way to try to deal with rejection or conflict, because of feelings of underappreciation,or due to worry that any natural feelings of anger aren't the right response, and so it becomes an attempt to sugar-coat things.
We almost all exhibit signs of passive aggression from time to time, but when it becomes a habit within our relationships,it can become upsetting for the other person involved, causing a divide. And for the person exhibiting this behaviour, their inability to say what is wrong clearly can often worsen the issue as it isn't being dealt with directly.Ultimately, passive aggression prevents change and growth, leading to more negative behaviour, the breakdown of trust, and further relationship problems.
Admitting that you have a problem and need to change is not just good for your relationship, but also a huge help in your life.If you're struggling and aren't sure where to begin, ask yourself“Could I unintentionally (or intentionally) be hurting my relationship? Is it worth saving my relationship,or do I want to risk things getting worse?Would I be happy if my partner acted the way I've been acting?”
Change doesn't happen overnight, but, with time and effort, you can find new, healthier ways of communicating how you are feeling, and start to strengthen the bonds within your relationship.

4.What is the possible passive-aggressive response to displeasure?( )
A.Turning to rude languages.
B.Displaying violent behaviour.
C.Hiding his true inner feelings.
D.Coming into conflict with others.
5.What can we learn about passive-aggressive people?( )
A.They are sometimes overconfident in themselves.
B.They believe conflicts should be resolved directly.
C.Their passive-aggressive behaviour doesn't last long.
D.Their behaviour likely leads to more negative results.
根据第四段中的“Ultimately, passive aggression prevents change and growth, leading to more negative behaviour, the breakdown of trust, and further relationship problems.”
6.What do the underlined words“the issue”in paragraph 4 refer to?( )
A.The behaviour. B.The divide.
C.The inability. D.The habit.
7.What should you do to make a change?( )
A.Start with a self-reflection.
B.Apologize to the other side.
C.Copy how the partner acts.
D.Let time cure everything.
根据倒数第二段中的“ask yourself‘Could I unintentionally (or intentionally) be hurting my relationship? Is it worth saving my relationship,or do I want to risk things getting worse?Would I be happy if my partner acted the way I've been acting?’” 故选A。]
The Internet offers us an opportunity to know more people (without actually needing to“know them”),with very little effort. But are online friendships the same as in-real-life (IRL) friendships?
How people see online friendships and IRL friendships depends on their age. While digital immigrants (such as I) support scientist John Suler's belief that people“separate their online lives from their offline lives”,the digital natives growing with social media find differences between online and offline friendships more unclear.
The Pew Research Center (PRC) finds that 57% of American teens make new friends online. But,it also finds that most“digital friendships”stay in the digital space with only 20% of teens having met an online friend in person. It seems that real-time friendships are considered more valuable than digital friendships even among the digital natives.Best friends meet most often at schools and homes, although online meetings come a close third. The reason why online friendships are placed below IRL friendships is the absence of physical intimacy (亲密).
So,is the Internet bad for relationships?Obviously not.But for the net,I could have never kept in touch with or met my high school friend after a quarter of a century. But even if there is no physical separation, the digital native seems to find online interactions with real-life friends beneficial.83% of teen social media users believe that social media makes them feel more connected to their friends'lives.78% of online gaming teens (mostly boys) feel more connected to existing friends with whom they play games.
However, online interactions can have an adverse effect on existing relationships.68% of teen social media users report having experienced unpleasant feelings toward their friends on social media and 26% of all teens have had an argument with a friend over something that happened online or over text messages.
The Internet is undoubtedly an invaluable link between people separated by distance. But this link must be based on intimacy and familiarity and a balance of online and offline interactions will pave the way for better relationships in the world.
8.Which of the following may digital natives agree with?( )
A.Online friendships are long-lasting.
B.Online friendships just remain digital.
C.Online friendships clearly differ from IRL ones.
D.Online friendships are less valuable than IRL ones.
根据第三段中的“It seems that real-time friendships are considered more valuable than digital friendships even among the digital natives.”
9.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us?( )
A.Why many teens choose online friendships.
B.How real-life friends make online interactions.
C.The influence of online interactions on teens'lives.
D.The benefits of online interactions to IRL friendships.
结合文章第四段首句“So,is the Internet bad for relationships?Obviously not.”
10.What does the underlined word“adverse”in paragraph 5 mean?( )
A.Lasting. B.Harmful.
C.Decisive. D.Noticeable.
11.What opinion does the author express in the last paragraph?( )
A.The Internet is good for people's relationships.
B.Good relationships don't exist without intimacy.
C.It is good to balance online and offline communication.
D.Honesty matters to both online and offline communication.

Making Friends Through Letters
Aimed at helping us high school students make friends by writing letters,an activity was held by the City Youth League last week.
The activity was held among all the high schools in our city.It began with the participants writing a letter,in which they made a self-introduction and shared all the topics they were interested in.Then the letters were randomly sent to students in other schools. It's not hard to imagine how excited we were when receiving a letter from a stranger. It was with this traditional method of communication that we made new friends to share our sorrow and happiness.
All in all,not only did the activity promote mutual communications among students, but also it relieved the pressure brought by intense study.
