(2025·湖北武汉模拟)
Each fall, millions of butterflies across the U.S.and Canada fly up to 4,000 km to central Mexico.Travellers can see the butterflies overwintering on the Western Monarch Trail,a 465 mile, road trip friendly conservation initiative that links over a dozen stops along the route.
Helping the butterflies
Organisers created educational panels in English and Spanish explaining the butterflies' annual travelling and their trouble. The signs also outline ways travellers can help the butterflies recover, such as by supporting chemical free farms and planting native nectar (花蜜) gardens.
Why butterflies fly to the California coast
Many stops in Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove and Andrew Molera State Park, are overwintering sites where, from October to February, travellers can see thousands of butterflies gathering in forests in areas with mild temperatures, dappled (斑驳的) sunlight, high dampness, and little to no wind.
Other sites, like the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden and Avila Valley Barn, grow flowers that provide sugary, high calorie food for the butterflies to eat.Butterflies settling here demonstrate how vital nectaring plants are to their survival.
How to explore the Western Monarch Trail
The butterflies' behaviour varies at different times of day and depending on the weather. In the mornings, while temperatures are still cool, step out of the cabin (木屋) in the Fernwood Resort where you stay overnight, you'll find many butterflies hanging together on the branches and trunks of trees at the overwintering sites. As the day starts to heat up—typically by late morning or early afternoon—you'll be amazed at the phenomenon “sunburst”—the butterflies start flying around in search of nearby nectar.Keep your eyes skyward.Don't grab your camera.Just be in the moment.

(2024·浙江稽阳联谊学校二模)
The sun near the equator is never ceasing, bearing down as I lead Elaine,a dark brown horse, through thick bushes. It's been a long day on horseback. My legs ache and our camp signals across a ridge of ancient folding hills in the Lolldaiga Range of northern Kenya,a mosaic (镶嵌图案) of twisted landscapes and communities.
Suddenly Elaine's ears flick into alert, and the muscles of her body tense beneath me.Our guide Nicholus stretches out a lean arm towards a bush just metres away.My eyes focus, trying my best to see what the others already have: two amber balls glowing from a shadowed form. It's a young lion, quick and strong,in the middle of the high grass.
A wild silence hangs between us.
Without the defensive hunting vehicle,I feel completely exposed.Peering into the bush,I'm suspended between wonder and terror; the distance between myself and the Savannah's most notorious hunter is unbelievably small.Usually,I'm the one tracking the lion, camera in hand. Now,the lion shifts in my consciousness from object to subject.I shift, too, strongly aware of the soft flesh of my own body.
Nicholus nods his head in the other direction,a safer distance away.He points to shallow holes in the dust.“Look, this is a big lion, and these are young ones, some cubs,”he says.“Probably a mother.”Paw prints marked the earth, each telling the story of more lions, moving in different directions.
It was time to go.
Horseback safaris are still the most immersive way to view wildlife in Kenya. To journey on horseback is to break down the walls—meant to protect, but also to separate us from the natural world. And as we're absorbed in the thrill of the experience,we're vividly reminded of the importance of protecting these wild spaces.
Out here your horse is your translator, responding to the low hiss of a leopard, the soft scent of an elephant herd, the cool morning breeze descending from Mount Kenya's glacial peaks.Your job is to learn how to listen.
4.Which word can NOT describe the author's horseback journey?( )
A.Thrilling. B.Tiring.

B.The author felt extremely tense in case of lions' attack.
C.The author suspected there would be a man lion battle.
D.The author never expected to break into a lion's world.
6.Why do people still love engaging horseback travelling in Kenya today?( )
A.Horses are much cheaper than vehicles.
B.Visitors will experience the wildlife anytime.
C.It is an exciting way to enjoy the wildlife.
D.It raises our awareness of protecting wildlife.
7.What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?( )

Standing on the South Pole at the start of the year with the wind blowing across the Antarctic, travel blogger Johnny Ward felt a wave of relief.
In early January 2024,he'd struggled through snow and ice to climb to the top of the Vinson Massif,Antarctica's highest peak.Years before,in 2017,he'd become the first Irish person to visit every country in the world.
Now,after decades of travelling and mountaineering,Ward could claim another world first—the Ultimate Explorer's Grand Slam (大满贯),which involves reaching the highest peak on every continent, and visiting both the North and South Poles in addition to visiting every country.
“I feel relieved,”Ward recalled as he slowly made his way back to his home in Thailand after climbing to the top of the Vinson Massif and then setting foot on the South Pole.“But also I'm aware I'm a normal guy,not a world class athlete,so I guess it was more about resilience and determination more than any ability.Although I met with lots of barriers,I overcame them one by one.”
Ward had previously devoted a decade of his life, between 2007 and 2017,to visiting every country in the world. The incredible journey saw him hitchhike (搭便车) a ride on a container ship from Oman to Socotra in Yemen, travel overland from Cairo to Cape Town and travel from South Korea to Australia by bus and by boat.
“It had been a huge life goal, over a decade of my life, and then when I finished that I was aimless and had no idea what to do next,”he said.“I started eating badly, drinking too much, putting on weight and I ignored my business.”
Ward decided that the best way to overcome this was to challenge himself again. He began running ultramarathons (超级马拉松) and climbing mountains, and soon found that with extreme purpose and direction,he was back to loving life again.
So where will Ward go next Space The bottom of the Mariana Trench, the deepest point of the ocean “All good things come after suffering, and I want to share that with people. So that's the next plan,”he said.
8.What did Johnny Ward achieve in early January 2024?( )
A.He climbed to the highest peak in Antarctica.
B.He set a new record for travelling in Antarctica.
C.He became the first person to visit the South Pole.
D.He became the first Irish person to visit every country.
9.What does the underlined word “resilience”in paragraph 4 refer to?( )
A.The ability to bounce back from difficulties.
B.The quality of being strong and honest.
C.The skill of achieving goals quickly.
D.The power to control one's emotions.
10.How did Johnny Ward feel after achieving his life goal in 2017?( )
A.Relaxed. B.Satisfied.
C.Lost. D.Excited.
11.Which of the following can best describe Johnny Ward?( )
A.Helpful and motivated.
B.Athletic and generous.
C.Proud and self centred.
D.Determined and strong willed.

A 篇(限时6分钟)
(2025·湖北武汉模拟)
Each fall, millions of butterflies across the U.S.and Canada fly up to 4,000 km to central Mexico.Travellers can see the butterflies overwintering on the Western Monarch Trail,a 465-mile,road trip-friendly conservation initiative that links over a dozen stops along the route.
Helping the butterflies
Organisers created educational panels in English and Spanish explaining the butterflies' annual travelling and their trouble. The signs also outline ways travellers can help the butterflies recover, such as by supporting chemical-free farms and planting native nectar (花蜜) gardens.
Other sites, like the San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden and Avila Valley Barn, grow flowers that provide sugary,high-calorie food for the butterflies to eat.Butterflies settling here demonstrate how vital nectaring plants are to their survival.

The sun near the equator is never-ceasing,bearing down as I lead Elaine,a dark brown horse, through thick bushes.
Without the defensive hunting vehicle,I feel completely exposed.Peering into the bush,I'm suspended between wonder and terror;the distance between myself and the Savannah's most notorious hunter is unbelievably small.Usually,I'm the one tracking the lion, camera in hand. Now,the lion shifts in my consciousness from object to subject.I shift, too, strongly aware of the soft flesh of my own body.
Nicholus nods his head in the other direction,a safer distance away.He points to shallow holes in the dust.“Look, this is a big lion, and these are young ones, some cubs,” he says.“Probably a mother.” Paw prints marked the earth, each telling the story of more lions, moving in different directions.

“I feel relieved,” Ward recalled as he slowly made his way back to his home in Thailand after climbing to the top of the Vinson Massif and then setting foot on the South Pole.“But also I'm aware I'm a normal guy,not a world-class athlete,so I guess it was more about resilience and determination more than any ability.Although I met with lots of barriers,I overcame them one by one.”
“It had been a huge life goal, over a decade of my life, and then when I finished that I was aimless and had no idea what to do next,” he said.“I started eating badly, drinking too much, putting on weight and I ignored my business.”
So that's the next plan,” he said.

When our expedition leader 1 we would make a Zodiac (卓迪船) 2 at Jan Mayen,a tiny island in the Arctic Ocean,I stepped out onto my balcony aboard our ship, 3 to find clear skies and calm seas. 4 ,I was met with a gust of wet wind and a view of mist-covered mountains in the distance.Jan Mayen wasn't on our itinerary (行程),and due to its 5 location and often unpredictable weather, very few people ever 6 the island.I knew the 7 weren't ideal, but I wasn't going to let that stop me.
In fact, the possibility of 8 adventures was one of the reasons I chose this small-ship cruise. So I 9 joined my shipmates in the mud room, where we put on waterproof clothes and life jackets before hopping in the Zodiacs for a bumpy 10 to a black-sand beach.Even the fierce wind and rain couldn't 11 our excitement as we 12 our way to the beach and hiked to a viewing spot, pausing to photograph little purple flowers 13 the volcanic rocks.
Our visit there wasn't about what we could do or see.It was an opportunity to just be—to exist in a brief 14 on a tiny, often inaccessible, volcanic rock in the Arctic. And that's something I never thought I'd 15 in my lifetime.
