Using an app to learn a language is convenient because you can follow lessons and check your progress anywhere, even if there’s just a few minutes. Below is a list of my favorite ways to learn languages from my phone.
Google Translate
Most of apps teach you a language through exercises and progressive steps, while Google’s simply tells you how to write and speak anything you run through it. Still, I think it’s a great choice for beginners. I like to learn languages with Google Translate for two main reasons: its long list of supported languages, and the several language learning methods.
Memrise
Memrise isn’t as easy to use for quick translations as Google Translate, but it is easy to work with, supports offline courses, and lets you learn a number of languages. You can start off simple or skip all the way through to more advanced lessons. I find Memrise to be unique in how it teaches new words and phrases. They combine words into sentences alongside words that sound similar in your language, which makes it easier to remember.
Busuu
Busuu’s app is user-friendly. You get to pick where you’d like to begin in the course. The words and phrases you’ll learn are especially helpful for beginners who might find themselves around people speaking a foreign language and need to learn words in real situations quickly. However, Busuu doesn’t support as many languages as some of these other apps, and you do need a user account to get in.
Rosetta Stone
Rosetta Stone is designed specifically for helping travelers learn basic words and phrases. There’s also a phrasebook with basic words and words related to restaurants, hotels, and getting around—all very useful for someone traveling. If you want, you can buy additional phrasebooks covering topics like shopping, colors, emergencies, and so on.
1. Which apps are suitable for beginners according to the author
A. Memrise and Busuu. B. Rosetta Stone and Memrise.
C. Busuu and Google Translate. D. Google Translate and Rosetta Stone.
2. What is special about Memrise
A. It is designed for travelers.
B. It has real-time translation.
C. It supports a large number of languages.
D. It has unusual methods of teaching vocabulary.
3. In which part of a magazine may this text appear
A. Technology. B. History. C. Travelling. D. Business.

Human beings have always been crazy about the unknown. From ancient myths to modern-day detective stories and crime thrillers, mysteries have held a special place in our imagination. Why The answer lies in the complicated workings of our brains, our evolutionary history, and the fundamental nature of human curiosity.
Our brains are wired for curiosity. When we sense something unknown or ambiguous, our brains naturally step up to seek resolution. This phenomenon is driven by the brain’s reward system, which releases dopamine (多巴胺) when we solve problems or make discoveries.
Moreover, mystery engages multiple areas of the brain, including the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for problem-solving and logical reasoning, and the limbic system, which processes emotions. This engagement makes mysteries intellectually stimulating and emotionally gripping, keeping us hooked from beginning to end.
The human fascination with mystery has deep evolutionary roots. Our ancestors needed to be naturally curious and analytic to survive. Detecting hidden threats, understanding patterns in nature, and finding the intentions of others were crucial skills for survival. The ability to investigate and solve problems gave early humans a distinct advantage in navigating their environment.
From an evolutionary perspective, mysteries also serve as cognitive exercises, sharpening our minds and keeping our problem-solving skills active. They encourage critical thinking, pattern recognition, and deductive reasoning (演绎推理) — abilities that have historically helped us adapt and flourish in an unpredictable world.
Psychologists have long studied the impact of ambiguity on human behaviour. The Zeigarnik Effect, for example, suggests that people remember incomplete tasks better than completed ones. This explains why cliffhangers and unresolved mysteries keep us engaged — we feel a psychological need to find an answer.
Our love for the unknown is deeply rooted in our evolutionary past, psychological makeup, and intellectual curiosity. By embracing mystery daily, we can keep our minds sharp, satisfy our innate curiosity, and experience the thrill of discovery.
8. What does the underlined word “wired” in para. 2 mean
A. Feeling excited about something. B. Not having enough of something.
C. Able to perform satisfactorily. D. Seeming to be familiar with something.
9. How did curiosity benefit the evolution of early humans
A. It reduced physical labour. B. It enhanced artistic expression.
C. It sharpened critical survival skills. D. It strengthened storytelling traditions.
10. Which of the following may be the most memorable
A. A list of birth dates of your friends. B. A fairy story written by a famous writer.
C. A lecture with a controversial topic. D. A case in which no killer has been found.
11. Which is a suitable title for the text

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS ) has released the highest -resolution geological maps of the Moon yet. The Geologic Atlas (地图集) of the Lunar Globe, which took more than 100 researchers over a decade to complete, reveals a total of 12,341 craters (火山口) ,81 basins and 17 rock types, along with other basic geological information about the lunar surface. The maps were made at the unheard-of scale of 1:2,500,000.
Jianzhong Liu, a geochemist at the CAS Institute of Geochemistry in Guiyang and co-leader of the project, says that existing Moon maps date from the 1960s and 1970s. “The US Geological Survey used data from the Apollo missions to create a number of geological maps of the Moon, including a global map at the scale of 1:5,000,000 and some regional, higher-accuracy ones near the landing sites,” he says. “Since then, our knowledge of the Moon has advanced greatly, and those maps could no longer meet the needs for future lunar research and exploration.”
The atlas used data from China’s lunar exploration programme, especially the Chang’e -1 mission’s observation of lunar topography (地形) and geological structures, according to Liu. Observations made on the Moon’s surface by the Chang’e -3 and Chang’e -4 lander missions in 2013 and 2019, respectively, helped to confirm the accuracy of the Chang’e -1 data. The atlas team also used data from missions such as the GRAIL and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, both launched by NASA, and India’s Chandrayaan-1 probe.
“Contributing to lunar science is a profound way for China to establish its potential role as a scientific powerhouse in the decades to come,” says Mitchell, a geophysicist at the CAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics in Beijing. With the update d atlas, scientists will be able to better understand the history of the Moon, find potential lunar resources and conduct comparative geological studies. Liu says the completed atlas has been put into a cloud platform called the Digital Moon, and will eventually become available to the international research community.
12. Why does the author mention the Apollo-era maps in paragraph 2
A. To show their hard work.
B. To praise their significance.
C. To stress the need for new lunar maps.
D. To introduce the origin of lunar maps.
13. What can we learn about The Geologic Atlas of the Lunar Globe
A. It is much more accurate than Apollo-era maps.
B. It reveals geological features of the landing sites.
C. It was mainly based on the observations of Chang’e-3 and 4 missions.
D. It provides data for other countries’ lunar missions, such as the GRAIL.
14. What is the importance of the new lunar atlas
A. It confirms the accuracy of previous Moon maps.
B. It helps scientists to learn deeper about the Moon.
C. It reveals the Moon’s history and geological features.
D. It is the only lunar atlas that opens to all countries.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Geological Studies of the Moon
B. China’s Lunar Exploration Missions
C. The Development of the Moon Maps
D. The Most Detailed Moon Atlas Ever Made

My mother influenced me a lot. When I made a mistake, she never turned a blind eye to it. She also helped me develop many good hobbies. In my childhood, reading books was one of my favorite hobbies. Especially during holidays, I often went to the library to borrow books.
One Saturday morning after breakfast, I told my mother that I’d go and borrow one or two books in the local public library. Then, I set out, expecting what wonderful books I’d come across. After cycling there, I was amazed to notice a new children’s book that I had expected for long. The book was from abroad and was beautifully designed.
Eager to go through it, I quickly took the book out of the shelf and hurried to a chair nearby. Once seated, I opened the book and turned pages. Suddenly, a terrible thing happened. Because of my finger’s too much force, one page was torn (撕破) by accident, which produced a clear sound. It made me immediately shocked and anxious. “If the librarians find I have made the book damaged, they may ask me to buy a new one, which can be expensive. And they may angrily blame me for my carelessness,” I thought. Soon, my face turned pale and my heart pounded fast. Just then, I noticed a librarian was walking in the direction of me. “Is she coming for me ” I wondered, with my legs shaking with fear. Afraid she’d notice the broken page, I hurried to close the book.
Finding something wrong with me, the librarian was concerned and asked gently, “Do you feel uncomfortable ” I shook my head, replying, “No, I’m fine. Thank you!” The librarian smiled |and then left. When she was out of my sight, I quickly stood up and put the book back. I had no intention of reading other books, so I left the library in a hurry, without borrowing any book.
Once reaching home, I breathed a sigh of relief. However, my mother, who was doing housework, stopped.
Paragraph 1:
She came to check what books I borrowed.

Campus Classic Recitation Activity
Last Friday, our school successfully held the “Campus Classic Recitation Activity” in the school lecture hall.
The activity aimed to promote students’ appreciation of classic literature and improve their language skills. During the event, students from different grades took turns to the stage, reciting classic poems and essays in both Chinese and English with passion. Their wonderful performances brought the beauty of the classics to life.
The activity received an enthusiastic response. Students said they not only had a deeper understanding of the classics but also were inspired to explore more literary works. It is hoped that more such activities will be held in the future to enrich our campus cultural life.
47. Paragraph 1:
She came to check what books I borrowed. But to her surprise, she noticed I was empty-handed. With a puzzled expression, she asked, “Didn’t you find anything interesting ” I hesitated, my mind racing to find an excuse for my sudden departure from the library. But I knew I couldn’t lie to her. I mustered up the courage and confessed, “Actually, I accidentally tore a page on a book I really wanted to read, and I was too scared to borrow it.” I thought she would be upset or disappointed, but instead, she gave me a comforting smile and said, “Accidents often happen, and it's important that we take responsibility for our actions. Let’s think about how we can fix this.”
Paragraph 2:
Then, I carried glue and headed towards the library. My heart was pounding with a mix of fear and determination. I knew this was a chance to make amends and learn from my mistake. As I entered the library, I approached the librarian who had noticed my distress earlier. I explained what had happened, showing her the glue and expressing my sincere apologies. To my relief, she was understanding and appreciated my honesty. With her guidance, we carefully repaired the damaged page, and I promised to be more careful in the future. Leaving the library, I felt a sense of accomplishment and a newfound respect for taking responsibility. My mother’s influence had once again steered me towards the right path, and I was grateful for the lessons she had instilled in me.
