Skateboarding has been my life since I was 8 years old. Before I knew how to stand up, I would sit on my cousin’s old board and roll down the hills of Caceres, my hometown in Spain.
When I was at university, I heard about Skate-Aid, an organization that builds skate parks for children in disadvantaged communities. I’ve always wanted to make a positive impact on the world, and if there were a way to do that through skateboarding, I would be there.
I got a call in early 2019 that the next project would be in Syria. I was anxious. We flew to Lebanon and drove from Beirut to Damascus (大马士革,叙利亚首都). We stopped at checkpoints every few minutes. I didn’t understand Arabic, and all the men I could see were armed.
Our destination was Qudsaya, a city 7 kilometers west of Damascus. Damage from the war was everywhere: roads were cracked and buildings were covered in holes from shooting, in which birds had built nests.
We were building a skate park in an area that had been largely destroyed, except for a small structure where a family of five was living. They’d fled their home in the north. The mother was so welcoming, bringing us tea and coffee every morning.
It took 28 days to build the park. We’d get up early and spend all day working. This was going to be Syria’s first skate park, and many people wanted to help.
The kids would watch us skating down the street and were so excited. When we finished the bowl, I put them on a board one by one, and they were amazed by the feeling of rolling along. One boy was a natural. He had never skated before, but within a week he was already skating well.
We stayed for two months. I kept in touch with the kids, and they sent me videos of the tricks they’d learned. When we left, there were 400 children going to the park every day. I’ve been to so many countries, but Syria was special. I’ll go back as soon as I can.
24.Why did the author join Skate-Aid
A.To make a fortune. B.To join his cousin.
C.To contribute to the world. D.To improve his skateboarding skills.
25.What unexpected challenge did the author face during their journey from Beirut to Damascus
A.Language barriers with locals.
B.Many armed checkpoints and poor Arabic.
C.Road damage from conflict.
D.Bad interactions with checkpoint soldiers.
26.How did the local community demonstrate support for the skate park
A.Donating construction materials.
B.Offering daily refreshments to the team.
C.Volunteering labor for park maintenance.
D.Providing housing for the project workers.
27.What is the best title for the passage
A.Skateboarding: A Universal Language of Hope
B.War-Torn Syria: Rebuilding Through Sports
C.Skate-Aid’s Global Mission in Conflict Zones
D.The Journey to Syria’s First Skate Park
GOOGLE and other search engines have changed the way we use the Internet, putting vast sources of information just a few clicks away. But Harvard professor of psychology Daniel Wegner’s recent research proves that websites — and the Internet-are changing much more than technology itself. They are changing the way our memories function.
Wegner’s latest study, “Google’s Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips,” shows that when people have access to search engines, they remember fewer facts and less information because they know they can rely on “search” as a readily available shortcut.
Wegner, the senior author of the study, believes the new findings show that the Internet has become part of a collective memory source, a method by which our brains classify information. First hypothesized by Wegner in 1985, collective memory exists in many forms, as when a husband relies on his wife to remember a relative’s birthday. “It is this whole network of memory where you don’t have to remember everything in the world yourself,” he says. “You just have to remember who knows it.” Now computers and technology as well are becoming virtual extensions of our memory.
Wegner admits that questions remain about whether dependence on computers will affect memories negatively: “Nobody knows now what the effects are of these tools on logical thinking.” Students who have trouble remembering distinct facts, for example, may struggle to employ those facts in critical thinking. But he believes that the situation overall is beneficial, comparing dependence on computers to the use of calculators in the classroom. Initially, math students were banned from using the latter, he points out, but “Now it’s gotten to the point where most of the time we are being tested with our calculators, to see where we can get with that wonderful tool in our hands.”
28.What effect has the access to search engines produced on human beings
A.People prefer to think independently.
B.People find it easier to memorize things.
C.People lack motivation to remember things.
D.People have lost the ability to remember facts.
29.In context, the mention of remembering a relative’s birthday mainly serves to ______
A.show close-related people share memories.
B.show how people developed external memory.
C.emphasize collective memory’s effectiveness and accuracy.
D.illustrate collective memory with a common situation.
30.The underlined word “extensions” can be replaced by ______.
A.delays B.additions C.lengths D.developments
31.What’s Wegner’s attitude towards the effects of computer dependence
A.Negative. B.Positive. C.Uncertain. D.Indifferent.
With the Earth at its hottest point in recorded history, and humans doing far from enough to stop its overheating, some astronomers and physicists are proposing an idea — create a huge sunshade (遮阳篷) and send it to a faraway point between the Earth and the sun to block a small but crucial amount of solar radiation, enough to counter global warming.
Now, scientists led by Yoram Rozen. a physics professor and the Asher Space Research Institute director at Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, say they are ready to build a prototype (原型) shade to show that the idea will work.
“To block the necessary amount of solar radiation, the shade would have to be about a million square miles, roughly the size of Argentina. A shade that big would weigh at least 2.5 million tons — too heavy to launch into space,” Dr. Rozen said. “So, the project must involve a series of smaller shades. They would not completely block the sun’s light but cast slightly diffused shade onto the Earth.” Dr. Rozen added that his team was ready to design a prototype shade of 100 square feet and is seeking between $10 million and $20 million to fund the demonstration.
The sunshade idea has its critics (批评者). They think that a sunshade would be astronomically expensive. In addition, a solar storm or collision with stray space rocks could damage the shield, resulting in sudden, rapid warming with disastrous consequences.
However, sunshade supporters say that reducing greenhouse gas emissions at this stage will not go far enough to relieve climate chaos, that carbon dioxide removal has proved extremely difficult to realize, and that every potential solution ought to be explored.
Dr. Rozen said the team was still in the pre-design phase but could launch a prototype within three years after securing funds. He estimated that a full-size version would cost trillions but reduce the Earth’s temperature by 1.5 Celsius within two years.
32.What is the sunshade idea mainly about
A.Detecting the amount of solar radiation.
B.Building numerous sunshades in Argentina.
C.Creating a spacecraft as a block to sunshine.
D.Launching the sunshade into outer space and blocking sun radiation.
33.On what basis do critics oppose the sunshade idea
A.High costs and potential risks. B.Technical barriers and heavy weights.
C.Variable environment and limited time. D.Inadequate funds and incomplete research.
34.What did Dr. Rozen and his team need most
A.Technical help. B.Launch a prototype.
C.Financial support. D.Official permission.
35.What’s the text mainly about
A.Building sunshade to fight warming. B.Earth’s heating problem solutions.
C.Scientists’ new project on space. D.Earth’s heat crisis.
Conversational running refers to maintaining a pace at which you can comfortably speak in complete sentences as you move. It usually involves exercising at 60 to 70 percent of your maximum heart rate.
According to Kristen Hislop, a certified coach, you rarely choose and achieve this pace because it doesn’t feel like a “hard” workout. 36 But even though it doesn’t feel especially challenging, low-intensity training is great for your overall health.
Doing low-intensity exercise on a regular basis is going to build up endurance (忍耐力) so you’ll be able to go longer and further. 37 And, compared to high-intensity exercise, which uses sugar as fuel, low-intensity exercise burns fat more effectively. Beyond physical benefits, conversational running can improve mental clarity and reduce stress by increasing blood flow to the brain.
38 While running, you are near somebody but not necessarily facing them, so there might be a little bit more willingness to open up. This is also a phenomenal way to break interpersonal anxiety barriers. One reason may be that running stimulates endorphins, the body’s natural feel — good chemicals. 39 A stronger bond with those you run alongside may thus be formed.
Joining a running club can strengthen these positive effects. Finding the right club that matches your pace is crucial. You know the club is the right “fit” after the first outing and talk about meeting up for runs later. You meet people you have dinner and go on vacation with. 40 It’s beautiful to be a part of the running group.
A.You are likely to become lifelong friends.
B.It’s often much slower than you’d anticipate.
C.However, its effect may not be felt immediately.
D.Everything around you starts to seem more positive.
E.You also recover faster and reduce the risk of injuries.
F.High-intensity running is thought to provide more benefits.
G.Conversational running holds significant social advantages.

They had been practicing for weeks, preparing their favorite song. As they waited backstage, Sarah was a bit nervous. She repeatedly tuned her guitar, double-checking that each string was in perfect condition. Her band mates, noticing her nervousness, offered words of comfort. “We’ve practiced so hard. It’s going to be amazing,” they reassured her.
At last, their moment to shine arrived. They stepped onto the stage with beaming smiles. greeted the audience, and launched into their performance. Initially, everything unfolded smoothly. The melody was enchanting, and the audience was clearly enjoying it, nodding their heads to the rhythm. Nevertheless, right in the middle of the song, disaster struck — a string on Sarah’s guitar broke.
Sarah was shocked for a moment. But she quickly regained her composure (镇定). She swiftly remembered that there was a music room close by where they might be able to find a replacement string. Her band mates, determined to keep the show going, carried on playing, doing their best to cover for the absence of the guitar part. Sarah rushed off the stage towards the music room. Once there, she found the music teacher inside. In a rush, she explained her situation. The teacher looked through the instrument storage but couldn’t find a suitable string right away. AI Revolutionizes Education
Recently, a heated discussion themed “AI Reshaping the Education Landscape and Opening a New Chapter in Learning” took place in our class.
During the discussion, numerous benefits of AI were highlighted. For example, AI’s ability to analyze data enables it to tailor educational content to individual students’ needs and strengths, promoting a more engaging learning experience. Moreover, AI-powered tools, such as instant feedback systems, enhance learning efficiency by providing real-time assessments and guidance. However, some argued that over-reliance on AI might weaken students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
From my point of view, AI has the potential to transform education, but it should be seen as an addition rather than a replacement for human teachers.
67.范文
Just when Sarah was about to give up hope, the teacher remembered that there was an old guitar in the back of the storage room. They rushed over and searched through the piled-up cases and boxes. Finally, they found the old guitar. It was a bit dusty, but all the strings were complete. Sarah’s eyes lit up with relief. She quickly thanked the teacher and carefully examined the guitar to make sure it was in working condition. The clock was ticking, and she knew her bandmates were counting on her. Without wasting another second, she adjusted the guitar strap, held it firmly, and prepared to dash back to the stage.
Sarah quickly took the guitar and ran back to the stage. Her heart was pounding as she heard the sound of her bandmates’ playing getting louder. When she reached the side of the stage, she took a deep breath and stepped back into the spotlight. Her bandmates’ faces lit up with joy when they saw her. Sarah joined in seamlessly, picking up the melody right where she left off. The audience, who had been on the edge of their seats, erupted in cheers and applause. From that moment on, the performance soared to new heights. The combination of their talent and the thrilling comeback made the show unforgettable. As they finished their song, the audience gave them a standing ovation, and Sarah and her bandmates knew that this unexpected challenge had turned into a moment they would cherish forever.
