It seems every country has one major event on the annual calendar. Here we’ve boiled down the choices to the absolute top events to add to your bucket list.
Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland
This over 50-year-old good time held on the shores of Lake Geneva is the second-largest jazz festival in the world. It’s more than jazz, though. You’ll find broad-ranging acts from pop to rock and blues. And, best of all, a large portion of the performances are free, in keeping with the festival’s purpose to make music accessible to anyone.
Palio di Siena, Italy
Twice a year, the Tuscan town of Siena recalls its past in the Middle Ages with a bareback horse race. Each of the 17 horses in the race and each of their course riders, represent one of the city’s districts, adding to the roar (咆哮) of the crowd. And to make things even more entertaining, riders are allowed to do anything to their opponents other than pull their reins (缰绳), so expect as many falls as thrills.
Saint Patrick’s Festival, Ireland
Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated anywhere in the world where there is an Irish group, but there’s no better place than Dublin, Ireland. This four-day festival in March is packed with a program of music, performing arts, literature, tours and food events. Centered around the national holiday, this festival of Irish pride, achievements and talents will be well supplied with Irish cheer.
Harbin International Snow and Ice Festival, China
Harbin is transformed into a winter wonderland with huge ice sculptures across the city, decorated with lights and lasers, drawing thousands of artists and art enthusiasts alike. Ethan Peterson was a popular repairman of a village where I lived for five years. I often heard about mysterious stories about his late wife, Emma. There were also stories of someone who had got into trouble and needed a proper amount of money, and each ended on the same strange note: “Emma is in hock (抵押) again.”
I tried to talk with locals to solve the mystery. But at a newcomer’s spying curiosity, the villagers always avoided the issue like it was improper to talk about it, which left me completely in the dark.
Soon I began having troubles of my own. My son was in an urgent need of an expensive operation, but the money I had counted on didn’t come in.
One day Peterson came to fix my sink, which never worked well. Working silently for a while, he looked at me and said, “Word has it that you’ve been having a little trouble.” I was upset, but still opened my mouth. “Then it’s high time you met Emma,” he said decisively. I felt a bit scared and was prepared for anything, but all that happened was that he took out an old worn-out $1000 bank-note. What was roughly printed on it was: Emma.
“All you do is take Emma to the bank and put her up for loan for any amount up to $1000. You pay the bank their regular interest rate, and then Emma comes back to me.” He added, “Emma loved this village, and she wanted to keep on helping people after she was gone.” I started to understand why the town folk had been so secretive. They didn’t know whether I could be trusted with such a precious secret.
Though I moved away later, I would like to believe that Emma is still in circulation (流通). Emma strikes me as the kind of woman who goes on forever.
4. Who was Emma
A. A kind doctor. B. A rich banker.
C. A late woman. D. A helpful teacher.
5. What can we infer from the second paragraph
A. The mystery about Emma was hard to uncover.
B. The villagers didn’t like strangers in the village.
C. The villagers were very unfriendly to the author.
D. The author was not interested in the mystery at all.
6. How did the author get out of the trouble
A. By using Emma to get a loan.
B. By selling his house to raise money.
C. By getting a donation from a charity.
D. By borrowing money from the villagers.
7. What can best describe Ethan Peterson
A. Selfish and skilled. B. Caring and helpful.
C. Shy and thoughtful. D. Mysterious and serious.

Many years ago, people relied on the sun, the moon and stars to find their way around. Later, the compass was introduced. And now, we have satnav(卫星导航)systems to guide us. A satnav system uses groups of satellites to show the user’s location. They send information to a receiver, such as a smartphone, to show us where we are.
The earliest built satnav system is the Global Positioning Satellite System, which belongs to the US. Then there is Russia’s Global Navigation Satellite system, the European Union’s Galileo and China’s own satellite navigation system, Beidou.
On October 18, 2017, an ARJ21-700 plane, which was the first domestically(国内地) produced jet equipped with the Beidou navigation system, successfully completed a test flight. The results showed the performance of the system developed by China matches that of similar systems produced abroad, according to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.
Since its introduction in 2000, the Beidou navigation system has been increasing numbers of applications linked to everyday life, from shared bikes to farming.
When it comes to shared bikes, smart locks that support Beidou chips offer more accurate positioning than others, making it easier to find a bike.
Farmers can use Beidou-enabled tractors to plow(犁)the soil and use unmanned aircraft with Beidou to sow seeds, which can improve efficiency and make better use of resources. Beidou’s farming applications have spread from Heilongjiang Province to Beijing, Liaoning, Shanxi, Hubei and other regions across China.
With its many uses, the Beidou navigation system is even playing a big role in the Belt and Road Initiative(一带一路). “To date, the Beidou system has covered most parts of the Asia-Pacific region, as well as countries along the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road,” said Yang Changfeng, chief designer of the Beidou system.
Today, there are more than 20 Beidou satellites above our heads, and China plans to launch even more this year to expand the Beidou network to better serve the Belt and Road Initiative.
“As Beidou expands its overseas reach, it will be increasingly popular in the logistics(物流) industry,” said Miao Qianjun, Secretary General of the navigation services association. “Ships, for example, can use it to position themselves while sailing across oceans to European countries, no longer limited to Southeast Asian regions in the near future.
8. What is the purpose of the first two paragraphs
A. To compare some modern satnav systems.
B. To describe the benefits of satnav systems.
C. To tell us how satnav systems were created.
D. To introduce some satnav systems and their functions.
9. What can we know about the Beidou navigation system according to the article
A. It was used successfully in a new jet plane.
B. It is more powerful than other satnav systems.
C. It was introduced to China on October, 2017.
D. It wasn’t used in our everyday life until recently.
10. According to the article, the Beidou navigation system is already widely used for _______.
A. plowing the soil and sowing seeds
B. improving the efficiency of network
C. producing more smart locks for shared bikes
D. navigating ships across oceans to European countries
11. What is Miao Qianjun’s attitude toward the future of the Beidou system
A. Worried. B. Casual.
C. Positive. D. Doubtful.
D
Adaptation and innovation (创新) of traditional opera is an important trend in Chinese opera circle in recent years. In order to attract young audience of new generation and catch up with the time, traditional opera circle makes efforts to create new works. In recent years, traditional opera has come across the change of time and society. It gradually lost the main elderly audience and was not attractive for the young.
In order to find new opportunities, using modern sound, light and digital stage effects, China’s traditional Peking Opera, also known as jingju, is appealing to young people in a fashionable and innovative way, as the classic art faces an aging audience.
The centuries-old Tianleyuan Theater in Beijing has introduced fashionable performances of Peking Opera. The opera combines instrumental music, vocal performance, mime (哑剧表演), dance and acrobatics (杂技).
Tianleyuan has a jingju art experience section and fashionable performances. It has attracted more than 2,000 audience members, mostly young people, according to theater staff.

She was born into a family of jingju performers and has had 10 years of stage experience. “Innovation is good, but we must also carry on the basic elements of jingju,” another young performer Deng said.
According to Deng, innovation is perhaps the best way for jingju to deal with the problem of an aging audience. It has made successful attempts to combine jingju with local opera forms such as ballet when organizing performances abroad. “Innovation can help traditional arts go further. We are happy to see many young faces, and some of them even come twice to experience the ‘new’ art,” she added.

However, my eyes landed on the price of the dress. “That's too expensive and I don’t think I have that much money,” I thought to myself, sitting up on the sofa, “but I won’t give up.”
I began thinking of all the sources I could use to help myself. “Yes! Mum!” the very thought filled me with excitement. But how would I convince her For the rest of the day, my mind was full of the thought of how to persuade Mum to give me some money for the dress.
The next morning, I finally gathered the courage. While Mum was preparing lunch, I walked into the kitchen and spoke softly to her about how badly I wanted to buy an outfit for New Year’s Day. Then I took out my phone and showed the dress to Mum.
“It is beautiful indeed, Daisy, and I’m certain that you will look very pretty in it,” Mum agreed. Then she asked me, “Daisy, do you know the true meaning of New Year’s Day ” Noticing my confused look, she continued while clearing her throat, “New Year’s Day is not all about wearing new clothes. It’s an occasion in which we celebrate togetherness and receive gifts. But the essence is giving and spreading happiness.”
Then, she headed towards her room. She returned with some notes in her hand. “There you go, my sweetheart,” said Mum affectionately while handing me the money. “For me, nothing is more precious than my daughter’s happiness.”
“You are the best Mum in the entire universe!” I shouted, thrilled.

【47题答案】
【答案】
That afternoon, as I was surrounded by happiness, Mum’s words lingered in my mind. “The essence is giving and spreading happiness.” I repeated silently, staring at the money in my hand. The pink dress suddenly seemed less appealing compared to the idea of bringing joy to others. I rushed to Mum’s room, where she was packing decorations, and blurted out, “Mum, can we use this money to buy presents for the orphanage kids instead I want to make their New Year special too.” Mum’s eyes sparkled with pride as she hugged me. “Oh, Daisy, that’s the best idea! Let’s go online and choose something wonderful for them together.”
A few days later, the presents we bought online arrived. Inside the boxes were colorful toys, warm sweaters, and storybooks. When Mum and I arrived at the orphanage, the children’s eyes lit up at the sight of the gifts. A little girl named Lily shyly picked up a stuffed rabbit, while a boy named Tom eagerly flipped through a comic book. Watching their faces beam with happiness, I felt a warmth in my heart that no dress could ever match. As we sang New Year carols together, I realized Mum was right — true happiness comes from giving, and this New Year, I’d received the most precious gift of all.
