Some 3,000 tern (燕鸥) eggs were given up at a Southern California island after a drone (无人机) dropped and drove off the birds, a newspaper reported in June.
In May, two drones were flown over the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve in Huntington Beach, California. One of them went down in the wetlands. Fearing an attack from an enemy, several thousand terns gave up their ground-based nests (巢).
Usually during June, the white birds would be watching their eggs. But now, the sand is filled with eggshells.
Melissa Loebl is the manager of the protected area, which is about 160 km north of San Diego, California. Last year, the pandemic (疫情) brought more and more people to outdoor spaces. In 2020, about 100,000 visitors came to the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. That is up from about 60,000 in 2019, she told the newspaper.
That has led to an increase in human activities, including flying drones, walking dogs, and riding bicycles. All these activities are not permitted. There has been a great increase in dogs, particularly those permitted to run free. She explained that this is especially bad during the season when the birds lay eggs. “The dogs run after the birds, and the birds give up their eggs,” she said.
Another problem is the development of multimillion-dollar homes near the protected area. The owners feel they should he able to use the land as they like. Officials, however, are taking more action and fining people who break the rules.
The protected area is the largest saltwater wetland between Monterey Bay just south of San Francisco and the Tijuana River Estuary in Mexico. Some 800 kinds of plants and animals live at or travel to Bolsa Chica.
4. Why did the birds give up their eggs
A. They thought their enemy was coming.
B. Their ground-based homes were unsafe.
C. They had planned to build new nests.
D. They hated the loud noise of the drone.
5. Which of the following might come from the pandemic
A. People needed more pets. B. People loved nature more.
C. People valued their health more. D. People preferred to stay outdoors.
6. What do we know about the people near the protected area
A. They try to protect birds. B. They care little about nature.
C. They build houses everywhere. D. They are against the development.
7. What can be the best title for the text

C. Human Activities Hurt Wildlife Greatly D. 3,000 Eggs Were Left After Drone Feared Birds

My son Leopold is a picky kid and unwilling to try new things. According to him, it’s because he has numerous fears, including heights and spiders. Last year, as my 9-year-old son and I were on a series of adventurous trips, I came up with a rule: We would say yes to everything as much as possible — including food and experiences, especially new ones.
In St. Augustine, Florida, we collectively said yes to a moonlit ghost (鬼魂) tour of the city’s famous haunted sites, where while others got scared and left during the actors’ telling of ghost stories, Leopold and I stayed until the bitter end and didn’t even cry out when one of the actors attempted to frighten us with a jump scare.
On that same trip Leopold tried his first spicy tuna roll and blackened grouper (石斑鱼),which he found surprisingly delicious, and regretted not having tried them sooner. In Long sands, Maine, I challenged myself to jump into the freezing ocean, getting cold and wet, but happy to be foolish enough to jump into the cold waters.
On the last night of our trip at an exhibition where cowboys showed their skills at handling bulls in Cody, Wyoming, my son did not hesitate (犹豫) but went onto the field to take part in this traditional event. Though coming back without any prize, he was laughing loudly, sweaty and excited. I knew it was an experience we would never forget.
And there lies the beauty of saying yes to new things. It pushes us to step out of our comfort zone and be open to new opportunities. Though it’s not always possible to say yes to everything back home, we’ve begun trying to say it more. By trying new things, we are developing a sense of curiosity and adventure, which helps us live life to the fullest with few regrets even if we do sometimes wind up cold and wet, sweaty and tired.
8. What do we know about Leopold in paragraph 1
A. He was afraid of the dark. B. He was a fan of travelling.
C. He was hungry for adventures. D. He was against fresh attempts.
9. What did the author do during their trips
A. He dived into the cold sea bravely. B. He cooked blackened grouper.
C. He won a prize in a local event. D. He told ghost stories.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The causes of being curious. B. The benefits of trying new things.
C. The importance of adventurous spirit. D. The influence of the adventurous trips.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To share a story of an adventurous trip.
B To present problems of living a full life.
C. To tell readers to enjoy new experiences.
D. To show difficulties of parenting a picky kid.

When I was young, I never fully appreciated why my parents signed me up for every music class. I viewed practicing the piano and the violin as a burden, or something that had to be done every day before being able to watch Disney Channel.
While the majority of my classmates would bond over their dislike of learning an instrument, I found myself gradually expecting to learn new songs, practice them and perform them. Maybe it’s because my parents used Disney Channel as an incentive, or maybe I just needed their early push. Regardless, I came to appreciate music as a form of self-expression.
Learning musical notes has benefits to language development and cognitive (认知的) functions. Studies have shown that the left planum temporale, the part of the brain involved in hearing processing and receptive language, is active when musicians are either reading and listening to music or comprehending speech. But, when non-musicians are listening to music, their brains do not process it in the same area as language—while processing language is a natural ability, music awareness is something that can be obtained through practicing.
Take Finland, for example, where the average person learns to speak three to five languages. This is a result of the country’s custom of early music training, in which children learn the fundamentals of musical notes through songs and games. In fact, a study reveals a strong connection between children who study music before and the development of higher IQs and a bigger range of vocabulary.
In addition, evolutionary evidence from Oxford University highlights how speech and language started developing merely 200,000 years ago. It’s clear that the neural networks of both music and language have overlap (重叠部分), and that our use of speech as a form of communication has its roots in the original evolutionary history of music. So if you’re looking to learn something new, consider picking up a new instrument!
12. What was the author‘s original altitude towards learning musical instruments
A. Cautious. B. Favorable. C. Uninterested. D. Unconcerned.
13. What does the underlined word “incentive” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Threat. B. Standard. C. Alternative. D. Motivation.
14. What does the example of Finland show
A. The use of foreign languages increases communicative skills.
B. Practicing music helps improve language ability.
C. Children with higher IQs have rich imagination.
D. Learning musical notes enlarges vocabulary.
15. What does the last paragraph probably imply
A. Language originated from music.
B. Everyone should learn an instrument.
C. The history of language is longer than that of music.
D. Learning music is more difficult than learning languages.

When our youngest sister was born, my little brother Tom was six and I was eight. I had always been the “Big Sister” and he had always been “The Baby”.
Our sister’s arrival was a complete surprise to both of us. In those days no one worried much about sibling rivalry (兄弟姐妹间的较劲), and no “experts” told us how to deal with another child in the house. We had wise and loving grandpa and mom, however.
I was excited about the baby and loved to hold her and help care for her. Tom’s feelings were quite different! He just looked at her and left, preferring to spend the evening in his room. When I went to his room to talk to him and try to get him to play games with me, he just looked away. “Why did they have to get that baby ” Tom asked.
Later that night, Grandpa came over to see the new baby. As he held her, he said to Tom, “You know, she’s a lot like the baby lamb I’m raising on the bottle. I have to take care of her and feed her often, just the way your mom does with the baby.” Tom said, “I’d rather have the lamb.”
Grandpa heard and said, “Well, if you’d rather have a lamb, maybe we could trade your little sister for it. I’ll give you a day to think it over, and if you still want to trade tomorrow, we’ll do it.” I thought I saw him wink at Mom, but I knew I must have been mistaken because Grandpa never winked at anyone.
After Grandpa left, Mom read to Tom for a long while. Tom kept looking at the baby, and Mom asked him to hold our little sister while she went to the bathroom. When Mom came back. Tom was gently touching the baby’s smooth black hair, and as he held her hand, she took hold of his finger.

47. “Mom, look! She’s holding my hand!” Tom smiled. “Sure, she knows you’re her brother,” Mom smiled. He held the baby for more minutes, and seemed much happier at bedtime. The next day, Tom and I spent much of the day watching the baby bathe, watching her sleep and holding her. That evening, when Grandpa came back and asked Tom whether he was ready to trade, Tom looked surprised that Grandpa had remembered the bargain. He began to worry that Grandpa would take our sister away.
She’s a day older now. I think she’s worth five lambs now, “Tom said. Grandpa looked shocked, and said he had to think it over, Anxious, Tom went to Mom’s room and held the baby for long. The next day, Grandpa visited us and told Tom he was preparing five lambs. Tom took a deep breath and said, “The baby is worth fifty lambs now!” Annoyed, Grandpa answered, “I can’t afford fifty lambs. I guess you’ll have to keep her and help your parents look after her.” Tom smiled, and this time I really did see Grandpa wink at Mom.
