A Dutch museum has recovered an artwork that looks like two empty beer cans after a staff member accidentally threw it in the rubbish bin.
The work, entitled All the Good Times We Spent Together by the French artist Alexandre Lavet, appears on first glance to be two abandoned and dented (瘪的) beer tins. However, a closer look shows they are carefully hand-painted and required a lot of time and effort to create. Their artistic value was lost on a mechanic, who saw them displayed in a lift and threw them in the bin. The curator (馆长) Elisah van den Bergh returned from a short break and noticed the cans had disappeared. She recovered them from a bin bag just as they were about to be thrown out.
Froukje Budding, of the LAM museum in Lisse, western Netherlands, said artworks were often left in unusual places—hence the display in a lift. “We try to surprise visitors for all the time,” she said. “We have now put the work in a more traditional place on a plinth (底座) so it can rest after its adventure.” She stressed there were no hard feelings towards the mechanic, who had just started at the museum, stating that he was simply performing his duties.
Sietske van Zanten, the museum’s director, emphasized the museum’s mission to encourage visitors to see everyday objects in a new light. “By displaying artworks in unexpected places, we enhance this experience and keep visitors on their toes,” he added.
Budding also noted the cans were unlikely to stay on their traditional plinth for long and that they needed to think hard about a careful place to put them next.
4. Why did the mechanic throw the artwork in the rubbish bin
A. Because it stood in the way. B. Because it took much space.
C. Because it looked like real trash. D. Because it looked strange in the lift.
5. What was Budding’s attitude toward the mechanic’s behavior
A. Understanding. B. Concerned.
C. Critical. D. Unforgiving.
6. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 4 mean
A. Make visitors ready for surprises. B. Remind visitors of dangers.
C. Warn visitors not to litter. D. Show visitors around the museum.
7. What might happen to the artwork in the future
A. It will be kept in a safe. B. It will be put in a selected place.
C. It will be sent back to the lift. D. It will be placed in a traditional setting.

Most of us are aware of “Is the glass half full or half empty ” test. If you pick the former, you’re an “optimist”; otherwise, you’re a “pessimist”. It’s not a black-or-white test, but it can measure how one sees life.
According to psychologist Lissy Ann Puno, most of us grow up wanting to be an optimist-a person who can see the good in any situation and can stay hopeful when facing challenges. For some people, though, life happens and they start to see the glass half-empty instead. Pessimists tend to see the wrong in every situation, and blame external factors and circumstances when things aren’t going their way.
Being continuously fed with bad news and disappointments can turn optimistic children into adults that are critical of almost everything. For some, the shift becomes easier, being raised by pessimistic parents. Others still remain optimistic, thanks to a positive household growing up.
“This is why developing optimism in young children is significant for their development as adults,” said Lissy Ann. If adopted at an early age, this powerful personality quality can help children grow into strong adults capable of handling life’s circumstances with confidence, courage, and hope. What parent wouldn’t want that for their
children
“Children are seen as natural optimists,” Lissy Ann said. They come into this world with unbiased (无偏见的) eyes and a pure heart that hasn’t been influenced by social expectations, life experiences, severe mental shock, or
authority figures yet. Whether a child grows up to be optimistic or not is part genetic and part environmental. “Childhood experiences, parent-child connection, or authority figures will all have some influence,” she said. Although optimism (or the lack of it) could be passed down genetically, it can also be taught.
8. What attitude do the people of “the half-empty glass” hold
A. Focusing more on the negative aspect.
B. Holding onto hope in every challenge.
C. Considering different reasons for situations.
D. Measuring life based on social expectations.
9. What is mainly discussed about the shift into pessimists in Paragraph 3
A. Possible causes.
B. Proper treatments. C. Obvious signs.
D. Common misunderstandings.
10. Why is it important for children to be optimistic
A. It guarantees them a trouble-free life.
B. It enables them to be incomparable in career.
C. It makes them mentally strong in adulthood.
D. It helps them meet their parents’ expectations.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Children master interpersonal skills naturally.
·
B. Genetic factors decide how children see life.
C. Optimism strengthens parent-child connection. D. Proper guidance helps raise optimistic children.
D
Sensory-based food education given to 3-5-year-old children in the kindergarten increases their willingness to choose vegetables and fruit, according to a new study from the University of Eastern Finland.
The researchers used the sensory-based food education method Sapere, which makes use of children’s natural way of relying on all of the five senses when learning new things. In the Sapere method, children are given an
active role around food, and they are encouraged to share their sensory experiences. For example, kindergartens can introduce different vegetables and fruit to children in hands-on sessions, they can involve children in baking and
cooking, and they can offer children opportunities for growing their own vegetables in the kindergarten backyard. Food-related themes can also be included in books and games.
“There are several different ways to do this. However, it always starts from sensory-based learning and child engagement. Doing and experiencing things together is also an important aspect,” says Kaisa K hk nen, a
researcher and nutritionist from the University of Eastern Finland.
The researchers compared children in different kindergarten groups. Some were offered sensory-based food education, while others weren’t. Children were offered a snack buffet containing different vegetables and fruit to choose from, and the researchers took photos of their plates to analyse their willingness to choose and eat these food items.
The findings show that sensory-based food education increased children’s willingness to choose vegetables
and fruit, especially among children whose mothers have a lower educational background. On average, children of lower educated parents tend to eat less vegetables and fruit. This is how food education given in the kindergarten can help even out dietary gap between families.
“Another interesting finding is that the Sapere food education method also seems to improve the eating atmosphere in kindergarten groups. This encouraged children who were picky eaters to choose a more diverse selection on their plate,” K hk nen explains.
Positive and personal food-related experiences gained in the kindergarten can help adjust dietary preferences in a direction that is beneficial for health. Dietary preferences learned in early childhood often stick with a person all the way to adolescence and adulthood.
12. What can we know about the Sapere method
A. It improves kids’ five senses.
B. It enables kids to read more books.
C. It supplies various healthy food to kids.
D. It involves kids in active food-related activities.
13. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The research purpose. B. The research process.
C. The research findings. D. The research evaluation.
14. What does the underlined part “even out” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Narrow. B. Identify.
C. Analyze. D. Examine.
15. What might be the best title for the text A. Benefits of eating fruit and vegetables
B. Differences in family dietary preferences
C. Necessity for kids to form learning habits
D. New method to promote kids’ healthy eating

Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree (疯狂购物) for her ” said the ad.
“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper, taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the
bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging
my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry (参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now ” he wondered. He didn’t have a present, and he didn’t have a shopping spree, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and curled his toes and

Why not make that his gift He carefully copied his description onto a fresh, nicer piece of paper. Then, remembering how much his mom loved the bedtime stories, he decided to illustrate it. He drew little pictures beside each special thing he had written. It wasn’t bought with money, but it was filled with his true feelings and memories.
The next morning, Jim handed his present to his mom. “Happy Mother’s Day!” he said, a little nervous. His

the kitchen. “Oh, Jim,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion, “this is the best present I could ever ask for. It’ s perfect.”
