This year I am living abroad in Germany and trying to learn as much German as possible. But one thing I didn’t realize
was how many new words I would face every day. I see and hear new words everywhere: the notices in the train station;
menus in restaurants; the local newspaper and of course from my German-speaking friends. New words are all around you
when you are in a foreign country.
At first , a lot of German words I didn’t understand gave me a headache. I kept on looking up new words, but by the end
of the day I had forgotten most of them already. It upset me. A month later, I went to a shop and bought a small notebook. I
set myself the goal of writing five new words a day into my little blue notebook. Since then, in my bag, I have always carried
an important thing — my little blue word notebook.
I don’t have any rules about which words I write down. Most days I write down words that I learn from my partners at
work, or words that I have read. I have also learned the names of many fruits and vegetables from looking at their labels in
the supermarket—a very unexpected way of learning words. And I have learned many words that I have heard on TV or on
the radio. If I hear a word that I even don’t know how to spell, I write down how I think it is and look it up later.
My little blue word notebook is now like my closest friend. We are like Batman and Robin; we go everywhere together.
Setting the small daily goal has made me feel much more in control of my language learning and I am already seeing an
improvement. I will continue to use it for the rest of my stay in Germany and also when I return to university at home in
September.

A. The high cost of living in Germany.

D. The unfriendliness of local German speakers.
25. How does the author choose words for the notebook

A. To show the notebook is as famous as superheroes.
B. To express her deep love and dependence on the notebook.
C. To suggest she wants to be a superhero in language learning.
D.To prove that learning German is as exciting as superhero stories.

Junior Atreyee Ghosh, a biochemistry and psychology major at the University of Rochester (UR), first heard about the
Brain Exercise Initiative (BEI) through a friend. Since her freshman year of college, Ghosh has been volunteering with
senior citizens in her hometown of Georgia. She wanted to continue this work at UR, so she started trying to establish a BEI
chapter in Rochester.
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disease that affects 55 million people worldwide and is the leading cause of dementia(痴
呆). BEI’s mission is to send volunteers to help older people with Alzheimer’s complete special brain exercise packets. These
packets have three sections:
Writing:Basic questions like “Who is on the dollar bill ”
Math: Quick math problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication) to do as fast as possible.
Reading: A short passage that the volunteer and the older person discuss.
Ghosh says BEI isn’t just about doing the exercises—it’s about making genuine relationships. “We want to learn their
names and listen to their life stories—it’s about being human connection.” Research show that doing these brain exercises
regularly can help improve the cognitive abilities of people with Alzheimer’s. This type of program is already used in over
1,400 care homes in Japan.
Ali Al Qazzaz, a microbiology major and the chapter’s Outreach Coordinator(协调员), joined BEI to bridge his school
academic interest on Alzheimer’s especially why it’s more common near the Earth’s equator(赤道). “As a premedical student,
I want to both study the disease and learn from people who have it,” he says. Volunteers get training, including role-playing
sessions to handle challenges like when someone has struggling with the exercises.
Recently, BEI co-sponsored Family Science Day. They played brain memory games with local families to teach kids
and parents about how memory works. After that, the group will do a practice volunteer session at St. Ann’s Community. The
chapter also hopes to partner with Brook Dale Senior Living. To stay updated on volunteering opportunities, follow
@rochester.bei on Instagram.

A.A requirement for her biochemistry major.
B. A personal family experience with dementia.
C. Her academic research on Alzheimer’s disease.
D. Her desire to continue volunteering with seniors.
29. What does BEI’s training for volunteers include

People are living longer, and because of this, many countries are making people work longer too. Denmark recently said
it will raise the retirement age from 67 to 70 by 2040. Danish workers will then have to work longer than workers in any
other country before they can retire. The Danish government says this new rule is needed because people are living longer.
But a union leader named Jesper Rasmussen doesn’t like this plan. He said, “Denmark’s economy is doing well, but now it
will have the highest retirement age in the EU. Workers won’t be able to enjoy a good life when they are old.”
Denmark’s decision is part of a big trend around the world. With better hospitals, more nutritious food, and safer living
places, people’s lives are getting longer. This is a problem for countries because there are more old people and fewer young
people working. Pension systems, which pay money to old people, are running out of money. So, raising the retirement age
seems like a good way to fix this problem.
China will also raise the retirement age over the next 15 years. The one-child policy in the past made the number of
young people smaller. Now, there aren’t enough young workers to support old people.
However, not everyone likes the idea of working longer. Workers’ groups are worried. They say jobs like building
houses or working in factories are too tiring for old people. Also, older workers may have a hard time finding or keeping a
job because some bosses think they are too old.
Economists think raising the retirement age is good for the economy. More workers mean more products and more
money for the country. And the government won’t have to spend so much on pensions.
In short, raising the retirement age is a tough problem. Countries need to find a way to help old people work and still
have a good life. Maybe they can give old workers training or make rules to stop bosses from being unfair to them. Only then
can countries deal with the problem of an aging population well.
32.Why is Denmark raising the retirement age
A. Because the economy is bad.
B. Because people are living longer.
C. Because the EU asks them to do so.
D. Because there are too many workers.
33.What was the main problem in China that led to the retirement age increase
A.People didn’t like the old retirement age.
B.Too many old people didn’t want to retire.
C. The one-child policy made fewer young workers.
D. The government wanted more money from workers.
34.What are workers’ groups worried about
A. Old workers will get less pay.
B. Pension systems will break down.

35. What solution does the author suggest for aging populations
A. Offering training and fair rules.

C. Encouraging earlier retirement.
D. Focusing on young workers.

How to Quiet a Complainer( 抱怨者)
Have you ever suffered your mother’s complaints about her aches and pains Lengthy complaints will ruin the quality
of your time together. But you may not be brave enough to stop her. 36
Change the subject.
37 If your neighbor is complaining about the phone company, tell her about an unexpected
call you received from an old friend. If your coworker is complaining about your boss, ask whether he met the new employee.
Just get them off the focus that they’re currently(目前的) on.
Summarize(总结) the complaint.
If your complainer keeps repeating himself, he may stop if you show that you’re listening. Ask something like, “Can I
tell you what I’ve heard and I understand how you feel ” Using “I” statements rather than “you” statements show that you’re
interested rather than trying to shut the person down. 38 Saying you hear their dissatisfaction gets
the points across.
39
When you have things to do, tell the complainer that you must cut the conversation short. You don’t need excuses such
as a work deadline or a dentist appointment. You can simply be honest, even saying you need to move on so the conversation
doesn’t bring you down – especially if it’s someone who’s complained to you many times before.
Have a heart-to-heart talk.
When it’s someone very close to you – your partner, sibling, or best friend – who stresses you out with a lot of
negativity, it’s important that you take steps to deal with the situation. 40 Otherwise, if you bottle
up your feelings and continue listening to repeated complaints, you may grow angry or start avoiding the person.
A. Try to be honest.
B. Challenge the person to talk.
C. Avoid saying the word complaining.
D. The problems start when complaining becomes a habit.
E. It’s important to talk about the problem with an open heart.
F. In fact, there are some ways to get a complainer to stop without starting an argument.
G. Some complainers will switch topics if you shift the conversation in a direction that interests them.

参考范文:
Dear Lucy,
I’m thrilled to share my memorable experience of the Mid-Autumn Festival last year, which took
place on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, when families got together to admire the full moon and
celebrated unity.
In my hometown, I joined my colleagues for a delightful dinner. We indulged in mooncakes with a
variety of fillings, from sweet lotus seed paste to savory egg yolk, which was fascinating. After dinner, we
went to a park by the river, where many people were releasing lanterns shaped like stars.
The Mid-Autumn Festival taught me that traditions have the power to bring people closer. I sincerely
hope you can experience the warmth of this festival someday!
Yours,
Li Hua

Text 10 17 岁少年创最年轻单人环球飞行纪录
M: Mack Rutherford is a 17-year-old pilot. He has become the youngest person to fly alone around the
world. He landed his small plane in Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia. That is also where he started his trip
five months ago. Rutherford turned 17 during his trip. He broke the Guinness World Record for the
youngest male to fly around the world. That record had been held by Travis Ludlow of Britain. Ludlow
was 18 when he made his flight around the world last year. Rutherford was born into a family of
flyers. His sister, Zara finished her own around-the-world flight in January at the age of 19. Zara also
set the record as the youngest woman to fly alone around the world.
To break the Guinness World Records, Rutherford crossed the equator twice. He first planned to make the
trip in three months. However, it lasted longer because of several barriers, including rainstorms, sandstorms
and extreme heat. Most of the delays were caused by waits to get permits and other documents
required for keeping with the flight plan.
On Wednesday, a huge crowd of people welcomed Rutherford and celebrated his achievements.
