A British athlete crossed the finish line of his 62-mile multi-day swim around Martha’s
Vineyard in Massachusetts last Monday, becoming the first person to swim all the way around the
island.
Lewis Pugh, 55, swam several hours a day in the 8°C water for 12 days to raise awareness
about the challenge sharks face as the film Jaws nears its 50th birthday. He wants to change public
views and encourage protection for these at-risk animals – which he said the film presented as
“cold-blooded killers.” “We’ve been fighting sharks for 50 years,” he said after completing his
swim. “Now, we need to make peace with them.”
Pugh said he expected the swim to be difficult because of the water temperature, the distance
and the fact that it was happening during the start of shark migration (迁徙) season. However, it
was the continuous wind that proved the most challenging element of all. “It’s been a long journey
– a very big swim,” he said. “You leave as one person, but when you swim for 12 days, you return
as another, with a new reflection on what you’ve been through.”
Pugh noted that no swim is without risk, and that extreme measures are needed to get his
message across: About 100 million sharks are killed globally every year. “I think protecting sharks
is the most important part of the jigsaw puzzle of protecting the oceans,” he said.
Jaws director Steven Spielberg expressed regret that viewers of the film became so afraid of
sharks. He later contributed to protection efforts as shark populations fell, largely due to
commercial fishing.
Pugh now plans to travel to New York for a few days to give interviews about the swim and
discuss shark protection before returning to his home in England. “Now the real hard work starts,
which is getting this message to policymakers,” Pugh said.
11. Why did Pugh swim around Martha’s Vineyard
A. To research shark migration.
B. To celebrate a film anniversary.
C. To challenge his limits in cold waters.
D. To change people’s attitude to sharks.
12. What was the toughest part of the swim according to Pugh
A. The long distance.
B. The risk of shark attacks.
C. The unfavorable weather.
D. The low water temperature.
13. What can we infer from Pugh’s post-swim plan
A. He intends to take some time off.
B. He aims to influence decision-makers.
C. He is preparing for another adventure.
D. He plans to team up with film directors.

Will humans someday live and work on Mars Many scientists think so. In fact, they are
already working on plans to turn Mars into a new Earth. Because of the lack of the three necessities
for human survival – water, air, and food – it’s not possible to live on Mars right now. So how can
we make Mars livable The answer, scientists suggest, is a process called terraforming.
Terraforming means changing the environment of a planet so that it is similar to Earth’s. On
Mars, the average temperature is about –60°C. So, one goal of terraforming Mars is to warm it up.
Most scientists agree that Earth is becoming warmer due to increased levels of greenhouse gases.
We might be able to create similar conditions on Mars.
One solution is to build factories on Mars that release greenhouse gases. The gases will
change the Martian atmosphere, resulting in warmer temperatures. Mars’s polar regions will begin
to melt (融化), releasing more CO2 trapped inside the ice. Rain will eventually fall. It may then
be possible to grow plants outdoors for food. The plants will add oxygen to the air, making human
colonies (聚居地) on Mars a real possibility.
Terraforming Mars will probably be a thousand-year project, starting with several first
surveys. Then there will be different missions, and each new mission will build more places to
live. These will allow future visitors to spend more time on Mars and learn more about living on
the planet.
Huge domes (穹状建筑) will provide climate-controlled living spaces, first for plants and
later for humans. It will take centuries to improve the rocky surface so that people can grow plants.
Even 1,000 years from now, there may not be enough oxygen for humans to breathe, so people on
Mars may still need to use special breathing equipment.
14. What is the main purpose of terraforming Mars
A. To enable human settlement.
B. To carry out scientific studies.
C. To search for food for humans.
D. To protect Earth’s environment.
15. How do scientists propose to warm up Mars
A. By growing plants outdoors.
B. By producing greenhouse gases.
C. By releasing more CO2 in the ice.
D. By transporting Earth’s atmosphere.
16. What can be learned about human life on Mars in the future
A. Natural air will become available.
B. Breathing equipment may be required.
C. Domes can be removed within centuries.
D. Food shortage may be the biggest challenge.

C
During NREM sleep – our dreamless, deep and most important stage – our brains move what
we have recently learned or experienced from our short-term to long-term memory systems. Our
brains decide which memories are fresh and important for us to remember. This raises the question:
How and why does the brain select memories to reprocess during sleep
Research shows that memories are more likely to be stored if they have a greater positive or
negative (消极的) emotional connection, as they help guide our future behavior. For instance,
people are more likely to remember a painful burn than a red car passing by because the former is
much more useful for survival – that is, do not touch hot pans (烤盘). Similarly, lines from songs
are fun, so we remember them. Gerry from IT isn’t that fun, so we forget his name.
Significantly, our brains prefer to store positive and rewarding experiences. Recently, a
research team at the University of Geneva conducted an experiment. They asked a group of people
to play two games, one of which they won. The results showed that people were much likelier to
remember the details of the games that gave them a rewarding experience of victory. It seems that
when we have pleasurable experiences, the parts of our brain responsible for the feeling of reward
are reactivated (重启) during our sleep, and so our brains store the experiences.
This may have practical applications for learning and memorizing information. For example,
if you want to remember an important date, try connecting it with a positive experience – like
eating chocolate while reviewing it.
But what about bad experiences During the dreaming stage of sleep, these are often
reactivated and more likely to be stored in memory. This means that when you have a night of
long dreaming, you might also just have put to memory all those sad, scary, or disappointing
moments of your day. So, sweet dreams might not be so sweet after all.
17. A painful burn is more likely to be remembered because it ______.
A. affects future decisions B. determines human survival
C. connects to a passing car D. results from negative emotions
18. What does the experiment by Geneva team suggest
A. Games may bring positive feelings. B. We should enjoy rewarding moments.
C. We remember better what feels good. D. Winning games results in deeper sleep.
19. Why is chocolate mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To explain sleep stages. B. To warn against bad habits.
C. To suggest a memory aid. D. To describe a brain function.
20. What does the underlined word “these” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Horrible dreams. B. Long dreaming stages.
C. Unforgettable experiences. D. Unpleasant moments.

Possible Version 1:
Dear Alex,
I hope this email finds you well! I understand that memorizing vocabulary lists can be difficult and boring. But
I’m afraid this isn’t the most effective way to learn a language. Learning words in isolation doesn’t help us remember
them well.
I suggest you try learning words in context. For example, read articles, watch videos, or listen to podcasts in
English. You can write down new words and see how they’re used in sentences. This will make the learning process
more interesting and memorable. You could also consider using AI to help you practice vocabulary interactively.
Remember, language learning should be fun, not a chore. Hope this helps!

Li Hua

Possible Version 2:
Dear Alex,
Sorry to hear that you are struggling with memorizing vocabulary lists. I totally understand how you feel about
it. But I’m afraid this isn’t the most effective way to learn a language.
One way I would recommend is to read simplified classic literature works that interest you. This way, you are
memorizing not just the words, but also how and when to use them, which makes the learning process more
interesting and effective. My second advice is to try using the words in speaking and writing. By doing so, you’ll
be learning the language in a more natural way. Slowly, you will start to use them without even thinking.
Hope this helps a bit. Let me know if you give it a try!
Yours,
Li Hua

听力原文:
听第一段材料,回答第 1至 3 题。
W: Hi, Charlie. How are you How is it going in Hong Kong
M: Hello, Miss Lee. Well, things aren’t going very well for me here. I’m in a new school, you know. I have no
friends and I’m always having arguments with my parents. We just can’t seem to get along. I miss you and all
the guys in my class back there.
W: Oh, Charlie, I’m so sorry. I didn’t realize you were so unhappy. Listen, it took me a year to settle into life here
in London. I’ve made some really good friends by joining a jogging club. You just need to give it some time.
What efforts are you making to meet new people
M: Well, none actually.
W: You were on the basketball team at the school here. There must be a team in your new school. Why don’t you
try out
M: I guess I could, but I’m out of practice.
W: You are into books, why not join a book club Go to your local library and ask.
M: That sounds interesting. I’ll do that.
Question One: What can we learn about Charlie
Question Two: What is the relationship between the man and the woman
Question Three: What club will Charlie probably join
听第二段材料,回答第 4至 6 题。
W: Paul, I heard you’re involved in the school’s talent show. How’s that going
M: It’s quite a challenge, Jessy. We have a wide variety of acts this year, from music to magic tricks.
W: That sounds exciting! Are you performing as well
M: This time I’m working backstage, arranging the schedule and helping with the stage set-up.
W: Managing so many different acts must be hard.
M: Indeed, especially I have to make sure each act gets enough practice time. But seeing the students’ passion
makes it worthwhile.
W: Absolutely. Are there any acts that impress you
M: Definitely! A band playing a rock song and a student doing a classical piano piece – both are wonderful. But
the classical piano piece left a lasting impression.
W: I can’t wait to see it. How are you handling the lighting and sound
M: We have a team for that. Most of them are students from the technical club. They’re really talented and make
sure everything runs smoothly.
W: It sounds like a great team effort. When is the show
M: Next Friday. There will be a final practice the day before the performance.
Question Four: What does the man do in the talent show this year
Question Five: What does the man think of the technical team’s job
Question Six: When will the last practice be held

第二节 回答问题
Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Roger, and today I would like to introduce to you the art of video
making. In the next school year, you’re starting a new course – Digital Video Creation, so I think it’s useful for
you to know how to make videos on your own. I can see that you all have a computer in front of you, which is good.
The computer is a very important tool for video making. In fact, most of the work for those videos will be done on
it. First, I’m going to send a link to your mailboxes. From there, you’ll be able to download one software that we’re
going to use during this workshop. The software is called “Video Excitement”, which we’re going to use to make
long films. However, the videos we’re going to work on today will be less than 5 minutes. Before 6:30 p.m., each
of you will leave this room with at least one video that is made on your own. I will also have a look at all the works
and choose the best one. Now, please turn on your computers. We’re starting.
Question Seven: What is the new course for the next school year called
Question Eight: What equipment will be used to make most of the video
Question Nine: What is the software Video Excitement used for
Question Ten: When should everyone leave the room
