The Saint Lukas train doesn’t accept passengers—it accepts only the sick. The Saint Lukas is one of five government-sponsored medical trains that travel to remote towns in central and eastern Russia. Each stop lasts an average of two days, and during that time the doctors and nurses on board provide rural (乡村) populations with basic medical care, X-ray scans and prescriptions.
“People started queuing to make an appointment early in the morning,” says Emile Ducke, a German photographer who traveled with the staff of the Saint Lukas for a two-week trip in November through the vast regions (区域) of Krasnoyarsk and Khakassia.
Russia’s public health care service has been in serious need of modernization. The government has struggled to come up with measures to address the problem, particularly in the poorer, rural areas east of the Volga River, including arranging doctor’s appointments by video chat and expanding financial aid programs to motivate doctors to practice medicine in remote parts of the country like Krasnoyarsk.
The annual arrival of the Saint Lukas is another attempt to improve the situation. For 10 months every year, the train stops at about eight stations over two weeks, before returning to the regional capital to refuel and restock (补给). Then it starts all over again the next month. Most stations wait about a year between visits.
Doctors see up to 150 patients every day. The train’s equipment allows for basic checkups. “I was very impressed by the doctors and their assistants working and living in such little space but still staying focused and very concerned,” says Ducke. “They were the best chance for many rural people to get the treatment they want.”
4.How is the Saint Lukas different from other trains
A. It runs across countries. B. It reserves seats for the seniors.
C. It functions as a hospital. D. It travels along a river.
5.What can we infer from paragraph 3 about Krasnoyarsk
A. It is heavily populated. B. It offers training for doctors.
C. It is a modern city. D. It needs medical aid.
6.How long can the Saint Lukas work with one supply
A. About a year. B. About ten months.
C. About two months. D. About two weeks.
7.What is Ducke’s attitude toward the Saint Lukas’ services

In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.
As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now—several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.
Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI—the technology companies and world leaders—so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.

Rose had never imagined that she would live on her own at 67. She and her husband had raised one child. But shortly before her husband died, their daughter had moved to Australia. Now Rose was alone in Canada. Traveling to see her child was impossible as the trip was incredibly expensive. To save up for a visit to Sydney, Australia, Rose took a job as a window cleaner in a big apartment building.
Getting the job in the first place had been difficult because no one seemed willing to give a physically demanding job to a woman of her age; but Rose had managed to convince the building’s manager to give her a chance. It was a challenging job for her, but Rose wiped (擦拭) each window like it was a work of art. What’s more, she went above and beyond and always helped out with the residents. What she earned went straight into her savings account, but the money was piling up painfully slowly. Rose’s excellent work and warm heart did not go unnoticed by the building’s residents who would often give her tips and drinks.
One day, a conversation with one of the residents would end up changing her life. Rose was busy cleaning when Mrs Green walked in. And she asked how Rose was doing. Rose smiled, saying that she was fine. But Mrs Green could see that her eyes were swollen and red. Seeing that Rose was not all right, Mrs Green invited Rose to her apartment. Soon they were sitting with a hot cup of coffee. Then Mrs Green asked what was wrong again.
Rose sobbed and said that her daughter was having twin babies in July, but she couldn’t afford the trip to visit her. Her daughter and her husband couldn’t afford to pay for her ticket to Sydney, either. Mrs Green said, “I’m sorry to hear that, dear. But don’t close the window on hope; good things can still happen.” The chat helped Rose cheer up. After Rose left, she had an idea.

Obviously I would have to rethink of driving for the day. After breakfast I managed to brush off all the snow from the car and fortunately I managed to get it started at the third attempt. Before long, I saw an enormous queue of cars one behind another. I realized I was stuck right in the middle of a huge traffic jam. However, within five minutes the traffic was moving again and for the next two miles I was driving along the motorway at quite a good speed.
However, soon after, my car broke down because of the slippery road. There were still about 10 miles to go. Immediately, I called the car assistance firm, who promised to come soon. I also phoned the firm I was supposed to have an interview with, sincerely apologizing I might be a little late. Eventually I reached my destination at 11:30 a.m. The interviewers asked me some really difficult questions. I sadly thought I’d failed. But two days later, I received an e-mail from them, reading they offered me the job because I still rushed to their company for the interview in such cold and terrible weather and they saw my potential excellent qualities.

I passed around a piggy bank for donations at the end of each speech. My audience eagerly participated, not just by contributing spare change, but also words of encouragement. The piggy bank grew heavier with each passing day, filled with coins, bills and the collective spirit of a community coming together for a noble cause. It wasn’t long before I raised $2,000. With a good start, I began to visualize that statue up in the Rotunda next to the greatest Americans in history. My speech has captured the widespread attention since a TV station reached out to me.
I was interviewed on TV. The program caused a stir. Following the interview, more reports came out telling thousands more people about my goal. More supporting letters began to pour in. With joint efforts of people, enough money was raised. Excitement and gratitude filled my heart with so many people observing the relocation of the statue a century later. It was quite an experience to witness the generosity of people who are all inspired by the remarkable Susan B. Anthony, and keep the legacy of Susan B. Anthony alive for generations to come.(共20张PPT)

Mrs Green picked up the phone and began to call the other residents. She shared Rose’s story and proposed a plan to help her. The residents were all touched and agreed to contribute. Some decided to give cash, while others offered to buy necessary items for Rose. They also spread the word to more people in the building. Everyone was eager to do their part to support Rose and make her dream of seeing her daughter and the new babies come true.

The next morning, Rose went into the cleaner’s room as usual, spotting an envelope with her name on it. Curiously, she opened it and found a collection of money and a note. The note read, “Dear Rose, this is from all of us. We hope you can soon be with your daughter. Have a safe trip!” Tears welled up in Rose’s eyes. She felt so grateful and couldn’t wait to call her daughter and tell her the good news. With the help of these kind people, her journey to Australia was now within reach.
