THIS STREET IS OPEN FOR PLAY
Concerned about outdoor play in crowded cities Start a play street—a community event where neighbors close their road to traffic, creating a safe space for children to play. This initiative allows kids and adults to explore, create and socialize, which, undoubtedly, will bring the bonds between neighbors to a new height.
Compared to structured plays with strict rules and fixed procedures, a play street allows children to lead, establish rules and get involved in an open-ended activity without specific instructions, methods or goals.
Getting Started:
1. Host a meeting to discuss benefits and encourage involvement. Choose an event date and assign tasks to the neighbors.
2. Reach out to city councils for necessary permits to close the road. Ignoring this will lead to the cancellation of the whole plan.
3. Use posters, flyers, and social media to spread the word. Use these promotion means to inform residents of the date, time and activities planned for the play street.
4. Set up barriers for safety, provide equipment and encourage neighbors’ participation.
What to Expect:
·Game Areas: A variety of play equipment tailored for kids, such as jump ropes, balls, chalk for drawing, hula hoops and other outdoor games.
·Swapping Corner: A place where moms can bring unwanted items such as kitchenware, gardening tools or other household goods to exchange with each other.
·Arts and Crafts Seating: Arts and crafts seating with materials like paper, markers, crayons, paints and brushes. Children are encouraged to get creative and express themselves through art.
·Snack and Refreshment Station: Light refreshments like water, juice, fruit and healthy snacks to keep mixed-age participants energized. A potluck to share homemade treats and recipes.
1.What is the purpose of “a play street”
A. To prevent traffic jams. B. To strengthen community bonds.
C. To explore kids’ artistic potential. D. To involve children in structured plays.
2.What is a must to hold the event

C. Posting the safety regulations. D. Asking for authorities’ approval.
3.Which activity is intended for both kids and adults
A. Game Areas. B. Arts and Crafts Seating.

It goes without saying that hard physical labor wears you out, but what about hard mental labor “Influential theories suggested that fatigue (疲惫) is a sort of illusion cooked up by the brain to make us stop whatever we are doing and turn to a more gratifying activity,” says Mathias Pessiglione of Pitié-Salpêtrière University in Paris, France. “But our findings show that cognitive work results in a true functional transformation—accumulation of toxic substances—so fatigue would indeed be a signal that makes us stop working but for a different purpose: to preserve the integrity of brain functioning.”
Pessiglione and colleagues wanted to understand what mental fatigue really is. They used magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) to monitor brain chemistry over the course of a workday. They studied two groups of people: those who needed to think hard and those who had relatively simple cognitive tasks.
They saw signs of fatigue, only in the group doing hard mental work. Those in that group also exhibited in their choices a change toward options proposing rewards at short delay with minimal effort. Critically, they also had higher levels of glutamate (谷氨酸) in the brain’s prefrontal cortex (前额皮质). Together with earlier evidence, the scientists say it supports the hypothesis that glutamate accumulation makes further activation of the prefrontal cortex more costly, such that cognitive control is more difficult after a mentally tough workday.
So, is there some way to overcome this limitation of our brain’s ability to think hard “Not really, I’m afraid,” Pessiglione said. “I would employ good old recipes: rest and sleep! There is good evidence that glutamate is removed from the brain during sleep.”
There may be other practical implications of the findings. For example, the researchers say, monitoring of prefrontal cortex could help to detect severe mental fatigue. Such an ability may help adjust work agendas to avoid burnout. Pessiglione also advises people to avoid making important decisions when they’re tired.
4.What does the underlined word “gratifying” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Relaxing. B. Complex. C. Temporary. D. Rewarding.
5.What does the group performing hard mental work exhibit in the study
A. Fewer signs of mental fatigue.
B. Greater motivation and effort.
C. Higher efficiency in complex tasks.

6.What do we know about glutamate accumulation
A. It causes a sense of peaceful mind.
B. It enhances brain function in a limited way.
C. It signals the brain is emptying its mental energy.
D. It decreases the cost of prefrontal cortex activation.
7.What is Pessiglione’s advice for those overwhelmed by mentally demanding tasks
A. Remove them from the work agenda.
B. Reduce the complexity of all cognitive tasks.
C. Schedule strategic breaks to allow for recovery.
D. Apply technology to monitoring the brain activity.

This initiative allows kids and adults to explore, create and socialize, which, undoubtedly, will bring the bonds between neighbors to a new height.
Reach out to city councils for necessary permits to close the road. Ignoring this will lead to the cancellation of the whole plan. (2. 向市议会申请必要的封路许可。忽视这一点将导致整个计划的取消。)”可知,举办这个活动必须请求当局批准。故选D。

Jennifer Destefano answered a call from a number she did not recognize. “Mom, these bad men have me,” her daughter’s voice told her, crying. A man continued to demand money, or he would drug her daughter and leave her in Mexico. But while she kept him on the phone, friends managed to reach her daughter, only to discover that she was free and well on a skiing trip in Arizona. The voice used on the phone was a fake (冒充品).
In fact, voice cloning has far-reaching influences. A brief sample of a particular individual voice can be used to train an AI model, which can then speak any given text sounding like that person. The feature is to be included in iPhone’s new operating system IOS 17 to help people who may be in danger of losing their voices. ElevenLabs, an AI startup, offers users the chance to create their own clones in minutes. When generating a recording, the system also offers a controller that allows users to choose between variability, a lifelike intonation (语调), and stability, similar to a calm newsreader, both accurate.
With cloning coming, voices claiming to be someone may prove to be fakes. That disturbs financial industry (金融业), which uses voice as an important identification. In journalism, fewer people will trust news based on recordings. The opposite problem will arise when public figures refuse to admit their genuine recordings. Now, ever more people caught up in illegal behaviors will be attracted by the defence, “It wasn’t me.”
Creative industries could face challenges too. Voice actors’ skills, trained over a lifetime, can be taken away in a matter of seconds. The Telegraph recently reported on actors who had mistakenly given up rights to their voices, making it possible to clone them for nothing. But as the old saying goes, a coin has two sides. Val Kilmer, who has lost much of his voice to throat cancer, was delighted to have his voice restored for Top Gun: Maverick. And some others may be spared heading to the studio for retakes.

Is Paperless Office Really Paperless
A rising economy increased paper sales by 6 to 7 percent each year in the early to mid-1990s, and the convenience of desktop printing allowed office workers to indulge anything and everything. In 2004, Ms. Dunn, a communications supplies director, said that plain white office paper would see less than a 4 percent growth rate, a primary reason for which is that some 47 percent of the workforce entered the job market after computers had already been introduced to offices.
For office innovators, the dream of paperless office is an example of high-tech arrogance (傲慢). Today’s office service is overwhelmed by more newspapers than ever before. After decades of development, the American government can finally get rid of the madness on paper. In the past, the demand for paper has been far ahead of growth in the American economy, but the sales have slowed markedly over the past two to three years, despite the good economic conditions.
“Old habits are hard to break,” says Ms. Dunn. “There are some functions that paper serves where a screen display doesn’t work. Those functions are both its strength and its weakness.” Analysts attribute the decline to such factors as advances in digital databases and communication systems. Escaping our craving for paper, however, will be anything but an easy affair.
“We’re finally seeing a reduction in the amount of paper being used per worker in the workplace,” says John Maine, vice president of a paper economic consulting firm. “More information is being transmitted electronically, and an increasing number of people are satisfied that information exists only in electronic form without printing multiple backups.”
To reduce paper use, some companies are working to combine digital and paper capabilities. For example, Xerox is developing electronic paper: thin digital displays that respond to a stylus, like a pen on paper. Marks can be erased or saved digitally. Even with such technological advances, the increasing amounts of electronic data necessarily require more paper.
“The information industry today is composed of a thin paper crust surrounding an electronic core,” Mr. Saffo wrote. The growing paper crust is most noticeable, but the hidden electronic core is far larger and growing more rapidly. The result is that we are becoming paperless, but we hardly notice at all. “That’s one of the greatest ironies of the information age,” Saffo says. “It’s just common sense that the more you talk to someone by phone or computer, it inevitably leads to a face-to-face meeting. The best thing for the aviation industry was the Internet.”
12.Which of the following statements is NOT a reason for the slowdown in American paper sales
A. Workforce with better computer skills.
B. Slow growth of the U.S. economy.
C. Changing patterns in paper use.
D. Changing employment trends.
本文是一篇议论文。随着信息化的发展,越来越多的公司实行无纸化办公,但是,无纸化办公真的无纸吗
B 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“In the past, the demand for paper has been far ahead of growth in the American economy, but the sales have slowed markedly over the past two to three years, despite the good economic conditions.”可知,尽管美国经济状况良好,纸张的销售却显著放缓。故选B。
答案与解析
13.What does the last sentence in paragraph 3 mean
A. We have to look at paper consumption from different angles.
B. There is little chance that paper consumption will fall in the digital age.
C. Paper consumption will be greatly reduced in the digital age.
D. People are no longer so addicted to paper in the digital age.
B 句意理解题。根据第三段中的“Analysts attribute the decline to such factors as advances in digital databases and communication systems. Escaping our craving for paper, however, will be anything but an easy affair.”
14.The innovations from Xerox and other companies feature .
A. the intergration of digital technology with traditional paper
B. the change from traditional paper to digital technology
C. the combination of the use of computer screens and cell phones
D. a new type of computer writing and communication
A 细节理解题。根据第五段中的“To reduce paper use, some companies are working to combine digital and paper capabilities.”可知,为了减少纸张的使用,施乐公司与其他公司正在努力将数字和纸张功能结合起来。故选A。
答案与解析
15.What can we draw from the example of the aviation industry in the last paragraph
A. The dream of the paperless office will be realized some day.
B. People usually prefer to have face-to-face meetings instead of using computers.
C. More digital data use leads to greater paper use in the digital time.
D. Some people are no longer opposed to video-conferencing.
C 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“The result is that we are becoming paperless, but we hardly notice at all. ‘That’s one of the greatest ironies of the information age,’ Saffo says. ‘It’s just common sense that the more you talk to someone by phone or computer, it inevitably leads to a face-to-face meeting. The best thing for the aviation industry was the Internet.’”可知,信息时代最大的讽刺是我们正在变得无纸化,从而可以推断出在数字时代,更多的数字数据的使用导致更多纸张的使用。故选C。

Life at 16 took an unexpected turn when my parents decided to move our family from Texas to Arizona. In just two weeks, I had to say goodbye to my beloved teachers, dearest classmates and my best friends. I felt a sense of blame toward my parents for what seemed like turning my world upside down. I told everyone I’d be returning to Texas as soon as possible.
Upon arriving in Arizona, I made sure everyone knew I had friends waiting for me back in Texas. I was determined to keep my distance, firmly believing that I’d be leaving soon. The first day of school was a painful experience as I missed my friends in Texas badly. My life felt like it had come to an end.
Eventually though, things got a little better. In my art class, sitting just three seats away from me in the same front row was an outgoing girl with the most beautiful blue eyes I had ever seen. Her talent in art shone through her creations, and her lively spirit drew me in. I saw inspiration and connection in her that I so badly needed. Gathering my courage, I decided to talk to her. “Hi, my name is Sheila; what’s yours ” I asked with a Texan accent.
The girl next to her thought that I was asking her. “Emily.” “Oh, hi, Emily,” I played along. “What’s your name ” I asked again, focusing my attention on the blue-eyed girl. She looked behind her, not believing that I could be asking her for her name. “Jessie,” she answered quietly. “Hi, Jessie!” I smiled and returned to my work, awkward but satisfied. Little did I know that chance encounter would change the course of my life.

Her talent in art shone
through her creations, and her lively spirit drew me in.

As time passed, the pain of leaving Texas gradually disappeared. Jessie expanded our tight group by introducing me to their inner circle of more new friends where I found an even stronger sense of belonging in this new place. The memories we created together not only made me feel more at home, but also brought me closer to the people who had become a whole part of my life. Arizona, once a source of uncertainty, turned into a place I proudly called home, and it was all thanks to the unbreakable bonds I had formed with these incredible people.
