Tsung-Dao Lee, a Chinese American physicist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 for overturning what had been considered a fundamental law of nature—that particles (粒子) are always symmetrical (对称的)—died on Sunday at his home in San Francisco. He was 97.
The theory that Dr Lee overturned was called the law of conservation (守恒) of parity (宇称), which said that every phenomenon and its mirror image should behave precisely the same. At the time he challenged the theory, in 1956, it had been widely accepted for 30 years. Dr Lee was then a young professor at Columbia, where he had been promoted to full professor at age 29—the youngest in the university’s history at that point.
In 1956, Dr Lee and Dr Chen Ning Yang published their theory in the journal Physical Review. A groundbreaking experiment by the physicist Chien-Shiung Wu involving the decay of cobalt (钴) atoms was performed later that year, confirming that Dr Lee and Dr Yang were right. They were awarded the Nobel Prize the following year. Dr Lee was just 31 when he accepted the prize; he and Dr Yang were the first Chinese-born laureates
Dr Lee had an exceptionally long and productive career. He retired from regular teaching at Columbia in 2012, at age 86, but continued to contribute ideas to particle physics research into his 90s.
Dr Lee remained fairly modest about the discovery that brought him the Nobel Prize. It was the product of insight about something that, it turned out, was hiding in plain sight. “Nobody saw it before because it was a mental block,” he said in the 2007 interview. “Nobody looked for it.”
1.What does the underlined word “overturned” mean in paragraph 2
A. Considered acceptable. B. Proved wrong.
C. Criticized heavily. D. Backed by experiments.
2.Why is the physicist Chien-Shiung Wu mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To praise her achievement. B. To share her experiment.
C. To present experimental basis. D. To prove Lee’s brilliance.
3.Which of the following words can be used to describe Dr Lee
A. Ambitious and productive. B. Intelligent and courageous.
C. Influential and cautious. D. Humble and exceptional.
4.What is the text
A. A biography. B. An encyclopedia. C. A brochure. D. A journal.

When you walk along the towpaths lining London’s 100-mile network of canals, a life on the water can appear idyllic. The boats dotting the winding banks look impossibly charming, romantic and colorful. Even better, they’re cheap to acquire compared with buying a conventional land-based house or apartment in the city.
“It’s so peaceful here,” said David Ros, who has been living on the London waterways for 15 years. “I wake up in the morning and open the side door looking out over the river, and the ducks are waiting for me to feed them. It’s a really nice way to live.”
He bought his current houseboat six years ago for £30,000. Dating from 1940, it has an open kitchen, a bathroom with a shower and toilet, and a double bedroom. It’s a nice setup, if a bit crowded.
Mr Ros says he’ll never live on dry land again, as he prefers being surrounded by nature. But the reality is, he probably couldn’t afford a place he wanted. Home prices remain out of reach for many in London, with an average sale price of about £508,000, a 50 percent increase over the past decade. Meanwhile, a two-bedroom houseboat will now run you around £190,000.
The option is almost too appealing—a new wave of residential boaters is stretching London’s canal support system past its limits. Boaters have been living on Britain’s canals since the industrial revolution. But according to the Canal & River Trust, which looks after the nation’s waterways system, the number of residential boats in London has ballooned by 86 percent over the past decade, to more than 4,000.
With all the new boats on the water, even this affordable living option is becoming less attainable. Mr Ros’s winter coal supply costs £22 per bag, and he needs at least 20 bags for the season. Prices for diesel and gas are also up about 50 percent, and the basic price of a boat license is rising.
5.What does the underlined word “idyllic” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Appealing and disturbing. B. Simple and graceful.
C. Fashionable and romantic. D. Pleasant and peaceful.
6.What does David Ros think of his boat
A. Old-fashioned. B. Far from satisfactory.
C. Well designed. D. Spacious.
7.Why does the author mention the Canal & River Trust
A. To show the affordability of houseboats. B. To make a convincing comparison.
C. To trace the history of houseboats. D. To confirm the present situation.
8.Why is a houseboat becoming less affordable
A. Living on a boat takes more coal and gas for fuel.
B. Overall expenses of living on a boat are on the rise.
C. The canals are filling up with residential boats.
D. Land-based house prices are continuously increasing.

When you think of risky leftovers, you probably picture days-old meat or moldy veggies. But there may be another unexpected food safety risk hiding in plain sight on your refrigerator shelf: rice. Thanks to the presence of potentially harmful bacteria, leftover rice can cause major GI upset However, 1 .
Below, learn more about why rice is potentially one of the most dangerous leftovers, and how to properly store it to prevent the risk of food poisoning.
Why Rice Can Be So Risky
Uncooked rice contains spores(孢子) of common bacteria that survive cooking. 2 . These bacteria then multiply and can potentially produce toxins that lead to food poisoning symptoms.
3
Given the health risks associated with rice, it’s important to be mindful about storage. 4 . If you stick it in when it’s too hot, especially in a closed container, the rice will stay at a higher temperature longer. The easiest way to cool rice quickly is to place it in a glasslock container and let it cool to room temperature.
The Safest Way to Enjoy the Leftovers
Once you cool and store it, eat your rice within a day. 5 . The potential for bacterial growth increases the more times you heat it up. If you’re unsure you’ll eat all the leftovers, start small: you can always heat up more separately if needed.
A. How to Safely Store Rice
B. When to Keep Rice Well
C. just keep it exposed to the air
D. Only heat up the leftover rice once
E. the risk level ultimately depends on how you store it once it’s cooked
F. If you leave cooked rice at room temperature, the spores can turn into bacteria
G. Because the bacteria thrives at room temperature, fully cool it before you put it in the fridge

After eight years of construction, the Padma Multipurpose Bridge in Bangladesh opened to the public on June 26, reducing travel time from parts of the southwest of the country to the capital Dhaka from seven to eight hours to as little as just 10 minutes.
The 21.5-meter-wide, 6.15-kilometer-long bridge built over the Padma River, the main branch of the Ganges, has two levels with the upper tier having a four-lane highway and the lower tier a single-track railway, according to Wuhan-based China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, or MBEC, one of China’s biggest bridge makers. Before that, travelers and goods were transported via boat or ship because of the vast width and fast-flowing nature of the river, and the tendency of the area to flood.
In 2014, the Bangladeshi government awarded MBEC a $1.54-billion contract to build the core structure of the bridge, making it the country’s largest infrastructure (基础建设) project as well as the largest foreign bridge project undertaken by Chinese companies in terms of total cost.
“The construction was much harder than expected as the complex geological conditions brought multiple challenges to us,” said Shen Tao, deputy general manager of the project. “The bridge is located above a river with banks on loose soil, and downpours in the rainy season often caused flooding, bringing us numerous difficulties we had never experienced before.” “During the construction, we had to adjust the design plan to adapt to environmental changes whenever necessary,” he added.
“However, through continuous learning and adaptation, construction teams have greatly improved their abilities including technology, communication and adaptability.” said Wen Wusong, chairman of MBEC. “They demonstrated the strength of China’s road bridge construction to the whole world and the bridge is a model of international cooperation.”
Over the past eight years, the project has created over 50,000 jobs for local residents, according to MBEC.

中的“the bridge is a model of international cooperation”可推知,这座桥向世界展示了中国公路桥建设的实力,所以 demonstrated 在句中意为“展示”,与show意思相同,故选C。
12.What can be the best title for the news report
A. China-made Bridge Opens in Bangladesh
B. Eight Years of China’s Constructing a Bridge in Bangladesh
C. Constructing a Bridge Creates over 50,000 Jobs in Bangladesh
D. Bangladeshi Government Awards MBEC a $1.54-billion Contract
故选A。

The whole city was quiet when my van (面包车) pulled up to a cafe. It was 8:00 am and the businesses wouldn’t be open for another three hours. When the students studying film production jumped out of the van and began unloading a ton of equipment, I sat in the driver’s seat reading.
I learned a long time ago that I was just the driver and was not wanted or needed on the set. These kids used to need advice and help. Now, as older teens, they were making their own decisions and helping each other. Anything else that I might be able to tell them was not required and unwelcome. Sometimes, that made me feel a bit sad.
Emptied of its movie-related contents, the van now became the place to leave personal items. My job, as the driver, was to stay within calling distance with the keys so that if anything was needed I could open the van.
Knowing that I could find a corner somewhere and finish reading the book, I got out of the van and looked for a place to sit down. It was early, but the California sun was already beating down, and I didn’t want to sit in the heat. Against a wall, in the shade, just twenty or so paces away, I saw a beautifully carved park bench. I noticed that a man was sitting on one end, but there was plenty of room for at least two more people. Walking over, I set my drink on the ground near the leg of the bench and sat on the other end.
The man looked at me oddly but remained seated. I quickly discovered that he’d probably spent the night on the bench. His clothes were dirty and his hair was messy. I soon smelled the unpleasant smell of sweat on his body. I looked at him and smiled, and he smiled back with a mouth of blacked-out teeth.
We both sat there for over an hour. I was reading. He was intently watching the filming. He then stood and walked in front of me. In a slightly shaky but clear voice, he said, “Thank you.”

Hearing his words, I raised my head surprisingly. “For what ” I questioned. He looked at the ground as he whispered, “Usually people won’t even look at me, let alone sit by me. Thank you for treating me like a human being.” I honestly didn’t know what to say as he turned, picked up a small, dirty backpack and walked quickly around the corner. I was shocked. I hadn’t done anything spectacular; I just shared a bench.
After several seconds, I realized my actions had truly meant something to this man. To me, I just wanted a place to sit out of the sun. We were no different, no matter who we were, what we did in our lives or where we laid our heads at night. Both of us just wanted to be treated like a human being.

After several seconds, I realized my actions had truly meant something to this man.

Thinking of the man’s sincere expression, I felt a wave of warmth through me.
