Nearly a year ago, on a sunny July day, I drove to a nearby lake with my family and friends to have a picnic. I couldn’t wait to get in the water because I loved swimming. “Here I go,” I shouted, laughing, as I dove (跳水) from a boat dock into the lake. That was the last thing I remember. I was unconscious and pulled from the water with a severed spine (脊柱断裂), and paralyzed from the waist down.
After months of hospitalization, I was finally home. But things weren’t going well. I had to face many lifestyle changes. The gray sky outside my window matched how I felt inside. I sighed and turned away. Life had lost all meaning. I was impatient with myself as well as my family.
A few days later, I poured out my despondency to Jerry, a good friend of mine. “I don’t feel like I have a reason to get out of bed,” I told him. Jerry was quiet with his eyes focused on my mulberry tree. “Look,” he whispered. “There’s a cardinal (a kind of bird).” I saw it on that lower branch to the right. Cheer, cheer, cheer, the cardinal sang in a sweet voice. I’d seen cardinals before. Now as I studied this one, I realized I’d never really seen a cardinal. It was beautiful.
As I watched the elegant bird, something clicked The hope of life, like a light, was awakened inside me. After Jerry left, I wheeled to the front of the house, smiled at the sky and felt relieved.
I now take bird watching as my new hobby. I record interesting sightings in my diary and photograph every bird I meet. Besides, I feel a new kind of pleasure when taking care of the potted plants in my yard. Of course, I still face many difficulties every day, but when I look out of my window, I see birds. And when I see birds, I see miracles (奇迹). And I’ve found my place among them.
1.What happened to the author about a year ago
A. He fell off his boat.

A. Doubts. B. Expectations.

I love learning foreign languages so much that I learn a new language every two years. When people find I’m a polyglot(通晓多种语言的人),they always ask me,“How do you do that ” Honestly, my answer will be, “I don’t know. I simply love learning languages.” 1 They want to know why they spend years learning even one language, never achieving fluency, and what’s the secret of being polyglots.
2 And what do we have in common I decided to find that out. I went to several events where language lovers gather to practice their languages, asked dozens of polyglots about methods they use, and heard dozens of approaches. Everybody seems to have a unique way to speak several languages fluently.
3 All these polyglots talked about language learning as if it was great fun. They found ways to turn language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity. You should have seen their faces when they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards. 4 The methods are various, but they make sure it’s something enjoyable.
I realized it’s actually how I learn. 5 Then interesting programs became my choice. So all is clear. If you don’t like writing words down on paper, type them in an app. If you’re a shy person, apply self-talk at home. This is how polyglots learn languages, and the best news is that it’s available to anyone willing to take the learning into their own hands.
A. How can those with little talent be fluent
B. But people are never happy with the reply.
C. There’s no shortcut to learning languages for anyone.
D. One of them even made recipes in a foreign language.
E. That made me wonder, too, how other polyglots actually do it.
F. When learning Spanish last year, I was bored with textbooks.
G. Polyglots simply found ways to enjoy the language-learning process.

根据第一段中的“‘Here I go,’ I shouted, laughing, as I dove (跳水) from a boat dock into the lake. That was the last thing I remember. I was unconscious and pulled from the water with a severed spine (脊柱断裂), and paralyzed from the waist down.(‘我跳了,’我一边从船坞跳入湖中,一边笑着喊道。
根据第三段中的“‘I don’t feel like I have a reason to get out of bed,’ I told him.
根据最后一段中的“Besides, I feel a new kind of pleasure when taking care of the potted plants in my yard. Of course, I still face many difficulties every day, but when I look out of my window, I see birds. And when I see birds, I see miracles
根据第三段中的“His quick decision to buy the expensive gloves turned out to be a good one, which even promoted his social status on the bus, as poorer passengers stared at him enviously.(他迅速决定买这副昂贵的手套,结果证明是件好事,这甚至提升了他在公共汽车上的社会地位,因为较穷的乘客会羡慕地盯着他。)”
故选A。
第二段中的“At the exit, the cold wind reminded him of his gloves. ‘Now where are they ’ (在出口处,冷风使他想起了他的手套。 故选A。
1.B 上文“Honestly, my answer will be, ‘I don’t know.
2.E 下文“And what do we have in common (而且我们有什么共同点 )”用And引出了另一个问题,所以空处应该也是作者的疑问。E项中的“how other polyglots actually do it”是对其他通晓多种语言的人如何做到学好外语的疑问,与下文衔接紧密。故选E。
3.G 下文“All these polyglots talked about language learning as if it was great fun. They found ways to turn language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity.
4.D 上文“You should have seen their faces when they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards. D项中的“made recipes in a foreign language”与methods照应。故选D。
5.F 上文“I realized it’s actually how I learn. 下文“Then interesting programs became my choice.

Jill Wheatley was a PE teacher in Germany. On the weekends she competed in marathons around Europe. But life threw her a near deadly blow. While teaching a PE class, she was hit in the head with a baseball. The impact was so great that it left her with a brain injury and 70 percent vision loss, permanently blinding her in one eye. She spent 26 months in seven different hospitals, at times wishing it would just all end.
Desperately, Wheatley set out to find comfort and healing in nature. She travelled to Nepal where a friend convinced her to run in the Annapurna 100 with him. The power from that race changed her life and eventually had her looking up at the tops of the mountains. Project Vision 8,000 was born. And she began her mission to stand on top of the world’s 14 highest mountains, towering 8,000 metres above sea level, to show herself and others the power in choice and possibility.
Colours and touch help guide her on the mountain and she has never once felt too tired to carry on.“The only constant thing is change, so when the weather gets really bad or a storm is coming in, I know it is going to pass.”So far, she’s had few problems standing among giants, but she admits she continues to struggle with overcoming the “mountains of her mind”. Having already stared death in the face, Wheatley has great respect for the mountains and the mission she is on. But she’s not seared. The experience almost claimed her life, but it is now the driving force and fuel behind her success. At every icy peak, she smiles and takes a quick video with a breathless “so very thankful” whispered into the thin air.

I went to several events where language lovers gather to practice their
languages, asked dozens of polyglots about methods they use, and heard dozens of approaches.
1.B 上文“Honestly, my answer will be, ‘I don’t know.
2.E 下文“And what do we have in common (而且我们有什么共同点 )”用And引出了另一个问题,所以空处应该也是作者的疑问。E项中的“how other polyglots actually do it”是对其他通晓多种语言的人如何做到学好外语的疑问,与下文衔接紧密。
3.G 下文“All these polyglots talked about language learning as if it was great fun. They found ways to turn language learning from a boring subject into a pleasant daily activity.
4.D 上文“You should have seen their faces when they were showing me their colorful grammar charts and handmade flash cards. D项中的“made recipes in a foreign language”与methods照应。
5.F 上文“I realized it’s actually how I learn. 下文“Then interesting programs became my choice.

“Dear Jenny, I am really sorry to tell you that you didn’t get the position this time. The interviewers had a discussion about you. You have a very good experience, but you are not qualified for this position. The journalist we want is to communicate with people from walks of life, so you should be more sociable and more energetic. So, sorry.” Actually, such was not quite new to Jenny and this was the third time that she had been rejected for a job position after her graduation from university as a top student.
Overwhelmed (淹没) with sadness, she lifted her hands to cover her face. Her heart was broken with self-doubt whether she was never good enough to fit in with the highly competitive adult world. It seemed that the excellence she displayed at school was nothing but illusion. “Maybe I should quit applying for that demanding job,” Jenny whispered to herself.
Sensing something wrong, Jenny’s father, James, said to his daughter, “Congratulations on your graduation, and time to enjoy your youth. In celebration of your new life, I’d like to give you something special. Here is a car that I acquired many years ago. But before I give it to you, take it to the used car lot downtown and tell them you want to sell it and see how much they offer you.”
Unwilling as Jenny was, she went to the used car lot and they offered her only one thousand dollars because the car looked very worn out. With that offer, she returned back to her father and out of her expectation, this time her father told her to take this car to a pawnshop (当铺). Confused, Jenny went to the pawnshop where they should have offered her ten thousand dollars as her father’s car looked a little bit old to them. “Maybe it is a perfect deal!” thought Jenny. But then, the father advised his daughter to keep trying and go to a car club and show them the car. The daughter took the car to the club, and then, breathtakingly, something magic happened.

Ideas and questions came to her mind, so she asked herself, “How could the prices be so different at different places Are these guys out of mind to buy such a worn-out car ” Without any clues, she dashed back to her father and couldn’t wait to make out the truth. So she told James what had happened in the car club.
Wearing a satisfied smile, James said, “They identified it as an expensive car.” In fact, never had people in the used car lot and the pawnshop recognized the value under the broken cover. Patting Jenny gently on the shoulder, James said, “I want you to know that you are not worth anything if you are not in a right place. Don’t stay where your value goes unnoticed.” With moved tears in her eyes, Jenny understood she should know her worth and surround herself with those who could recognize it and that the true value would shine only when she was in the right environment. With my gloves on, I picked up the black bits of tin foil and glass pieces across the kitchen floor and wiped away water stains from the stove top. The cleaning process felt like penning a reflective learning summary. I understood knowledge without caution is a double-edged sword and that scientific experiments require precision and careful planning. I promise to approach future experiments mindfully, seeking guidance and aware of potential consequences.

Suddenly their neighbor Ms Ruby and her daughter Penelope approached their blanket. Ms Ruby, with her usual bright smile, greeted the Changs while Penelope examined the items displayed. Then Penelope looked at the mermaid palace Chloe was holding. Ms Ruby, noticing her daughter’s interest, told Chloe about how Penelope had always dreamed of having a mermaid palace but never got one. Chloe looked at her beloved palace and thought back to her mom’s words, a sense of happiness washing over her. Thinking of the happiness her toy might bring another, Chloe decided it was time to let go of her former treasure.
Chloe handed her beloved palace to Penelope. “I think it’s time for my palace to have a new owner.” Chloe whispered, her heart heavy but also filled with warmth. Penelope’s eyes lit up with joy, and she hugged the palace tightly. “Thank you. Chloe!” Penelope shouted. With a bittersweet wave to her old toy, Chloe finally realized the value of letting go and the joy of sharing. The simple act of giving and receiving painted a vivid picture of unity and generosity in this neighborhood.(共19张PPT)

“Dear Jenny, I am really sorry to tell you that you didn’t get the position this time. The interviewers had a discussion about you. You have a very good experience, but you are not qualified for this position. The journalist we want is to communicate with people from walks of life, so you should be more sociable and more energetic. So, sorry.” Actually, such was not quite new to Jenny and this was the third time that she had
been rejected for a job position after her graduation from university as a top student.
Sensing something wrong, Jenny’s father, James, said to his daughter,
“Congratulations on your graduation, and time to enjoy your youth.
With that offer, she returned back to her father and out of her expectation,
this time her father told her to take this car to a pawnshop (当铺).

People there willingly offered one hundred thousand dollars for the same car. Shocked, Jenny couldn’t believe what was happening in front of her. Ideas and questions came to her mind, so she asked herself, “How could the prices be so different at different places Are these guys out of mind to buy such a worn-out car ” Without any clues, she dashed back to her father and couldn’t wait to make out the truth. So she told James what had happened in the car club.

expensive car.” In fact, never had people in the used car lot and the pawnshop recognized the value under the broken cover. She knew clearly what to do next.
