In 1835, William Talbot finally succeeded in producing a photograph of his country house. He declared that his was the first house ever known to have drawn its own picture. The drawing was formed “by the action of light upon sensitive paper”. Photography offered nature a “pencil” to paint herself through optical (光学的) and chemical means alone.
By the mid-nineteenth century, people no longer needed to hire a draftsman to draw detailed images because the process could be completed instantly with a camera. Advocates for the technology stated that not only was it more precise than the human hand—it was faster and cheaper.
The removal of human fallibility in the creating process was one of photography’s biggest selling points, but this also started debates about the new medium’s implications for visual culture. Could images made largely by a machine be considered art If so, where did human creativity fit in this process
As the twenty-first century becomes increasingly automated, more and more people attempt to identify where human agency exists in the technologically driven world. Images generated with artificial intelligence by companies like OpenAI are stimulating questions like those that emerged with the coming of the photograph. By typing a sentence, users can generate “new” images composed from images collected across the Internet. The result has been a flood of AI-generated images in places that are previously unique to human authors. Painting competitions, commercial graphic design and the fashion of portraiture (肖像) have all since collided (碰撞) with the technology in troubling ways.
The fine arts were thought to be a final hold-out of human creativity, but the surprisingly high quality of AI-generated images is producing deeper questions about the nature of originality. If the history of photography tells us anything, it’s that the debate won’t be settled quickly, straightforwardly, or by the institutions we typically associate with cultural gate keeping.
4.Why did Talbot declare that his house had drawn its own picture
A. To downplay human factors in the creation.
B. To investigate a supernatural phenomenon.
C. To show his advanced knowledge in science.
D. To demonstrate the beauty of his country house.
5.What does the underlined word “fallibility” mean in paragraph 3
A. Expecting a high price. B. Detailing the images.
C. Being likely to make errors. D. Becoming sensitive to light.
6.What do OpenAI and cameras have in common
A. They improve the taste of beauty. B. They advocate fashion designs.
C. They challenge human agency. D. They produce original images.
7.What did the author indicate by referring to the history of photography
A. Cultural gatekeepers will solve the issue as they did.
B. AI-generated images will go through a similar debate.
C. The nature of originality will be held in human hands.
D. The fine arts will include photography and AI images.

In the past few years, online learning has become a significant part of the university and college experience. 1 But are all online courses created equal How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you 2 We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses.
The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime. 3 “I think a point that many people lose sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule,” says graduate student Amanda Bindman. Before choosing to study online, consider whether you’re a self-motivated learner and if the material seems interesting enough to keep you going.
The tip that comes up most often is simple: build online courses into your weekly schedule, just like what you would do with in-person courses. 4 He noted that his online students usually end up with lower grades. It is so easy to let an online course slide, but your grades will suffer as a result. Be sure to schedule set times to watch your lectures, read materials and contribute to online discussion boards.
5 A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink, an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can motivate each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule in-person meetings with your professor to discuss course concepts.
A. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t deadlines.
B. Your motivation should be your main concern.
C. Do you know that online courses are also part of your education
D. Professor Alex Davidson teaches the same course in person and online.
E. The chief complaint about online courses is that they lack human interaction.
F. If you take an online course, what can you do to ensure the best possible grade
G. A survey found that 29 percent of college students registered for online courses.

With a quick look, could you tell the difference between a group of 20 dots (点) and a group of 30 What about 20 and 21 It seems like there must be a point at which you’d simply be guessing, but recent research suggests otherwise. Given enough opportunities, people consistently perform better than chance on this kind of task even when the numerical difference is extremely small, according to a study published in the Journal of Numerical Cognition.
The research team showed more than 400 participants dot groups for just one second. On easy practice trials such as 30 versus (对比) 20 dots, participants chose the larger group correctly almost every time. For 20 versus 21 dots, they were right nearly 60 percent of the time. And even in the hardest comparison—50 versus 5l dots—participants consistently answered correctly on 51.3 percent of trials.
“If you are asked to make a judgment about which of two groups contains more stuff, and you have a little bit of intuitive (直觉的) feeling that one of them is more than the other, you should trust that,” says study lead author Emily M. Sanford.
The researchers tested two mathematical frameworks for thinking about this situation: one with a hard limit on the fine numerical difference people can perceive and one almost without. They found their data fit better with the second model, suggesting that even with numbers as high as 100 versus 101, the task would become harder but not impossible.
“The implications go far beyond number sense,” Sanford says, “because the study builds on a theory describing perception across many different stimuli: the work suggests that when deciding which of two circles has a larger area, for example, a person wouldn’t be truly guessing unless the circles were exactly the same size.”
“We can’t easily tell that 5l is greater than 50, so we sort of forget that our perceptual system is doing that,” says psychologist Sami Yousif from the University of Pennsylvania. “I see it as a landmark paper in the sense that it really reveals some of the assumptions that have, in my opinion, troubled this field for a long time.”
8.Which of the following dot groups is the easiest comparison according to the study
A. 20 versus 21. B. 20 versus 25.
C. 40 versus 41. D. 40 versus 45.
根据第二段中的“On easy practice trials such as 30 versus (对比) 20 dots, participants chose the larger group correctly almost every time. For 20 versus 21 dots, they were right nearly 60 percent of the time. And even in the hardest comparison—50 versus 5l
dots—participants consistently answered correctly on 51.3 percent of trials.
9.Which of the following shows Emily M. Sanford’s opinion
A. Our ability to tell differences can be seen in many areas.
B. We can easily decide which of two circles has a larger area.
C. Our intuitive feeling prevents us making right decisions.
D. We tend to guess when it comes to spotting tiny differences.
以及倒数第二段中的“because the study builds on a theory describing perception across many different stimuli: the work suggests that when deciding which of two circles has a larger area, for example, a person
wouldn’t be truly guessing unless the circles were exactly the same size
10.What does Sami Yousif think of the study paper
A. It shows that our perceptual system fails to work well.
B. It proves that people always trust their intuitive feeling.
C. It leads to a challenging problem in the field of science.
D. It contributes to a better understanding of perceptual ability.
根据最后一段中的“I see it as a landmark paper in the sense that it really reveals some of the assumptions that have, in my opinion, troubled this field for a long time. (我认为这是一篇具有里程碑意义的论文,因为它确实揭示了一些在我看来长期困扰这一领域的假设)”可推知,萨米·优素福认为这篇研究论文有助于更好地理解感知能力。故选D。
答案与解析
11.What is the best title for the text
A. Tiny Numerical Differences Are Hard to Distinguish
B. We Have Little Awareness of Our Perceptual System
C. Most People Are Able to Finish Complex Perceptual Tasks
D. Humans Can Rely on Intuitive Feeling to Spot Differences
故选A。

As much as we like to think about nature embodying balance, the universe is actually filled with imbalance, too. Let’s take the supernova (超新星) for example. Two stars orbit each other. One of the stars is older, called a “white dwarf”, while the other star is a bit younger. Their mutual gravitational interaction (相互引力相互作用) pulls material off the younger star and dumps it onto the surface of the white dwarf. If enough material falls onto the dwarf, the stuff dumped on to the white dwarf begins to “burn”.
If the conditions are right, you always burn up the same amount of material that gets added. If the donor star is dumping too much material onto the dwarf, the burning runs out of control. It consumes not just the new material on the white dwarf’s surface but the whole of the dwarf star itself. So much energy is released so quickly that the star finds itself wildly out of balance. In an instant, it becomes a super-hot ball of unbalanced pressure. BOOM! A supernova is born.
Closer to home, a similar but different kind of process happens in volcanoes. Volcanoes are born when magma (熔岩) from deep in the Earth makes its way slowly to the surface through cracks in the planet’s crust (地壳). The heat from the magma builds up a massive pressure imbalance inside the mountain. It’s that imbalance that drives the BOOM, the volcanic eruption that rips a zillion tons of rocks away and sends ash 15 miles into the sky.
But here’s the thing: Supernova, volcanoes and all those other explosions in the universe are not just awesome sights. They are all essential players in cosmic (宇宙的) evolution. Supernova creates a lot of the elements in your body that are essential to life. No supernova, no you. And volcanoes are essential to evolution of the planet, including the cycling of greenhouse gases like CO2 that make the Earth habitable. No volcanoes, no you.
12.What does the underlined phrase “the donor star” refer to in paragraph 2
A. The younger star. B. The older star.
C. The supernova. D. The white dwarf.
根据第一段中的“One of the stars is older, called a ‘white dwarf’, while the other star is a bit younger. Their mutual gravitational interaction (相互引力相互作用) pulls material off the
younger star and dumps it onto the surface of the white dwarf. 故选A。
13.What factor leads to both the birth of supernovas and volcanic eruption
A. Hot magma. B. Burning material.
C. Unbalanced pressure. D. Gravitational interaction.
根据第二段中的“So much energy is released so quickly that the star finds itself wildly out of balance. In an instant, it becomes a super-hot ball of unbalanced pressure. BOOM! A supernova is born. (如此多的能量释放得如此之快,以至于这颗恒星发现自己严重失去了平衡。瞬间,它变成了一个压力不平衡的超级热球。轰!一颗超新星诞生)”和第三段中的“The heat from the magma builds up a massive pressure imbalance inside the mountain.
It’s that imbalance that drives the BOOM, the volcanic eruption that rips a zillion tons of rocks away and sends ash 15 miles into the sky.
14.What can we learn about the explosions in the universe in the last paragraph
A. They evolve as players. B. They create human bodies.
C. They are awesome sights. D. They are necessary to life.
15.In which section of a website can you find this passage
A. Profile. B. Science.
C. Health. D. Economy.
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“As much as we like to think about nature embodying balance, the universe is actually filled with imbalance, too. (尽管我们喜欢认为自然体现了平衡,但宇宙实际上也充满了不平衡)”可知,文章主要以超新星的诞生和火山爆发为例介绍了宇宙中不平衡的现象,这些爆炸不仅是令人敬畏的景象,也是宇宙进化的重要参与者,是生命所必需的。因此,文章属于科学范畴,可能出自网站的科学部分。故选B。

In the past few years, online learning has become a significant part of the university and college experience. 1 But are all online courses created equal How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you
2 We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses.
The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime. 3 “I think a point that many people lose
sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule,” says graduate student Amanda Bindman.
Be sure to schedule set times to watch your lectures, read materials
and contribute to online discussion boards.

I spent 15 years trying to make it in the music industry. When I was a teenager, I did any odd job to afford time in a recording studio. I knocked at managers’ doors and sent out demo (录音样带) after demo, but I got nowhere. In 2010, aged 27, I was doing a job in a restaurant when I wrote a song called Dream Goes On. It was a song about never giving up. I just let out all of my frustrations at the keyboard.
Over the next five years, the music career never materialized but I persisted. Then, in 2019, I uploaded Dream Goes On to a music-sharing website. I just wanted someone to notice my music.
Later that year, I received an email out of the blue from Music World from South Korea, requesting a license for the song. They had chosen my song from the millions on the music-sharing website for a theme tune for one of their shows. I was amazed and negotiated a contract for $5,000 for the use of the song and signed up straight away. I was pretty excited, but didn’t think anything more would come of it, so I focused on my job in the restaurant.
This February, Music World organized a musical festival in Seoul and my song Dream Goes On was also chosen as the theme tune for the festival. I watched on YouTube as my song was being played to a huge crowd of people. It was amazing.
After three days of the festival, I was contacted by Music World and they asked if I’d like to go to Seoul to sing Dream Goes On in a concert. They flew me out there the next day. I was welcomed like a celebrity—everyone I met thought I was a big name in England. I had to break the news to them that I wasn’t a pop star.

I had never performed the song live, and hadn’t been on stage for years.

After the concert, I had photographers and journalists battling to interview me.

I had never performed the song live, and hadn’t been on stage for years. Seized by a strong sense of tension, I stood on the stage, seeing the huge cheers and a sea of lights below the stage. I was lost at the moment, holding the microphone tightly. I tried my best to collect myself and began to sing my own song which I had practiced hundreds of times. Looking back on the years I had experienced as I sang on the stage, I realized that it is the opportunity that I had been waiting for the

stage, showing the best to the audience.
After the concert, I had photographers and journalists battling to interview me. With them around me, a long queue of fans were waiting to have their photograph taken with me. I was like a superstar and that night was like a real dream for me. I had knocked on doors for years, yet my moment came when the opportunity called me. Life can surprise you. It has reinspired my passion for music. This has made all the odd jobs and weekends spent in recording studios all worthwhile.
