I’ve spent this week judging a video contest for which you made short films about life in Shanghai and your take on Chinese culture.Over the course of several days, you’ve taken me around the city, introducing me to new ideas and experiences. Moreover, this privilege got me thinking about perspectives. It’s rare we see the world through someone else’s eyes.
How would things be different if we were more willing to adopt a different point of view Living abroad in a foreign culture is the ultimate test of someone’s willingness to expose themselves to new perspectives. And it isn’t always easy, however much we love our adopted home.
Shane and I moved to China 12 years ago. At first, there were many things about the place we didn’t understand. But over time, we’ve learned more about what’s undeniably a fascinating country. Friends and family in England haven’t always understood our decision to live here. But when people did visit us, their perspectives changed. Meanwhile, a friend told me she won’t visit China. How narrow-minded is that
When you close yourself off to new places, people and experiences, you create space for misunderstanding and you make yourself ignorant. When we step outside of ourselves to engage with others, we create empathy and connection. A willingness to roll around with different perspectives encourages us to question our assumptions and develop a richer view. If we don’t, we risk becoming increasingly individualistic.
So that’s what you’ve taught me. Seeing our city through your eyes reminded me that everyone’s experiences and thoughts are shaped by their own storyline. When we are open to new perspectives, we see the world in new ways and are better people for it. Thank you who contributed to the “Shanghai, My City” campaign. Not only did I get to “meet” you, but I also learned a lot about the place I love.
4.What might the author act as
A. A contestant. B. A judge. C. A tourist. D. An educator.
5.What does the author think of her friend’s refusal to visit China
A. Understandable. B. Shallow. C. Unprejudiced. D. Tolerant.
6.What can we do to avoid being individualistic
A. Step out of our comfort zone. B. Stay away from misunderstanding.
C. Embrace different perspectives. D. Be willing to challenge our assumptions.
7.Who may the text be intended for
A. Foreign visitors to Shanghai. B. Viewers of the video campaign.
C. Friends and family of the writer. D. Contributors to the video contest.
Rock climbing has become a mainstream pleasure enjoyed by many. The natural world offers a thrilling adventure through beautiful environments filled with wildlife.
However, rock climbing happens in places that are generally hard to access and unsuitable for agricultural expansion and urbanization. As a result, they have generally suffered less human impact and the areas tend to be important sites for biodiversity. 1 With the sport booming, the amazing biodiversity sustained by cliff ecosystems is under pressure.
2 Giving nesting birds some place is what climbers can do. The presence of climbers at the cliff where birds are nesting tends to cause them to abandon their chicks to starvation. Climbers should check in advance if there are any bird nesting restrictions. This information is usually available on climbing guidebooks. 3 If climbers spot a nest, try to leave a note and find a way to communicate this to the rest of the local climbing community.
Some cliff-specialist plant species have very narrow ranges. If a suitable habitat is rare, they have few opportunities to grow elsewhere. However, climbers can remove vegetation and soil when establishing a route that has not been climbed before. 4 So climbers should keep the impact on vegetation in mind when developing new climbing routes. Even they can work with other route developers and conservationists to understand the potential impact on the plants.
The number of climbers heading out to these cliffs is increasing at an astonishing pace. It is essential for climbers to know what they can do for the protection of the cliff ecosystem. 5 Please help those with less experience and knowledge by sharing the information about climbing and biodiversity damage!
A. This can wipe out the cliff ecosystem that was there previously.
B. And some organizations have an online database offered to check.
C. Therefore, every climber is responsible for protecting the cliff ecosystem.
D. Even climbers can ask the climbing gym to organise a discussion about this topic.
E. Seemingly a straightforward way is to spread the word about these good practices.
F. These data can then be accessed by scientists to avoid environmental issues on cliffs.
G. For example, 40% of sport climbing areas in Spain are found in nature protection areas.

In West Africa, dancing is an important part of many family traditions.
An ocean away, in the United States, a German-Jamaican-American family has made performing those dances part of their tradition. Their family name is Von Hendricks. Six years ago, two sisters and their brother formed an African dance company. They named it “Keur Khaleyi”, which means the House of Children in Wolof, a language in the West African nation of Senegal.
The group is based in the eastern U. S. city of Baltimore, Maryland. Its members perform in local and national festivals. They also set up a school to teach dance moves to others recently.
At first, the dance company was made up of two dancers, sisters Jihan and Ayana, and their brother Shakai, who played the drums. Soon, two younger family members joined them. Later, a sister-in-law joined the group.
The family performs dances from Senegal, Mali and Guinea, but has no family ties to those places.
Performing together strengthens family ties and fuels creativity. Shakai said, “Our parents knew what they were doing. They put us into this at a young age to keep us together.”
The Von Hendricks family uses the dance company to keep generations close. Jihan’s daughter, 13-year-old Diallo, dances and plays the drums with the group. She started dancing when she was 18 months old. She says it helped her develop social skills and make friends. She likes everything about performing: the music, the costumes and the feeling of accomplishment.
The Von Hendricks share their joy and knowledge with their neighbors in Baltimore. One of their students is a 71-year-old hairstylist, Shakoorah El Sharief. She learned many African dances in the past, but says she likes West African dances best.

We explore large-scale training of generative models on video data. Specifically, we train text-conditional diffusion models jointly on videos and images of variable durations, resolutions and aspect ratios. We leverage a transformer architecture that operates on spacetime patches of video and image latent codes. Our largest model, Sora, is capable of generating a minute of high fidelity video. Our results suggest that scaling video generation models is a promising path towards building general purpose simulators of the physical world.
We train a network that reduces the dimensionality of visual data. This network takes raw video as input and outputs a latest representation that is compressed both temporally and spatially. Sora is trained on and subsequently generates videos within this compressed latent space. We also train a corresponding decoder model that maps generated latents back to pixel space.
All of the results above and in our landing page show text-to-video samples. But Sora can also be prompted with other inputs, such as pre-existing images or video. This capability enables Sora to perform a wide range of image and video editing tasks—creating perfectly looping video, animating static images, extending videos forwards or backwards in time, etc.
Sora is also capable of generating images. We do this by arranging patches of Gaussian noise in a spatial grid with a temporal extent of one frame. The model can generate images of variable sizes—up to 2048*2048 resolution.
We find that video models exhibit a number of interesting emergent capabilities when trained at scale. These capabilities enable Sora to simulate some aspects of people, animals and environments from the physical world. These properties emerge without any explicit inductive biases for 3D, objects, etc.—they are purely phenomena of scale.
We believe the capabilities Sora has today demonstrate that continued scaling of video models is a promising path towards the development of capable simulators of the physical and digital world, and the objects, animals and people that live within them.
12.What is the meaning of the underlined words in the text
A. The original raw video data.
B. A compressed version of the video data.
C. The process of reducing video quality.
D. The spatial and temporal dimensions of a video.
根据第二段中的“This network takes raw video as input and outputs a latest representation that is compressed both temporally and spatially. (该网络将原始视频作为输入,并输出经过时间和空间压缩的a latest representation)”可知,这个网络将原始视频作为输入,并输出在时间和空间上都被压缩的版本。因此“a latest representation” 指的是视频数据的压缩版本。故选B。
答案与解析
13.What is the main content of paragraph 3
A. Sora’s ability to generate high-resolution images.
B. The process of training Sora on compressed latent space.
C. Sora’s various applications in image and video editing.
D. The emergence of interesting capabilities in video models.
根据第三段中的 “But Sora can also be prompted with other inputs, such as pre-existing images or video. This capability
enables Sora to perform a wide range of image and video editing tasks—creating perfectly looping video, animating static images, extending videos forwards or backwards in time, etc.
14.Which of the following best describes the overall goal of the research described in the passage

根据第一段中的“Our results suggest that scaling video generation models is a promising path towards building general purpose simulators of the physical world. (我们的研究结果表明,缩放视频生成模型是构建物理世界通用模拟器的有希望的途径。)”和最后一段“我们相信,Sora 今天所具备的能力表明,继续缩放视频模型是开发物理和数字世界以及物体、动物和生活在其中的人的有能力的模拟器的一条有希望的道路。”可知,研究的总体目标是开发一个能够模拟物理世界各个方面的通用模拟器。故选B。
答案与解析
15.What is the author’s attitude towards the future development of Sora
A. Skeptical. B. Optimistic.
C. Neutral. D. Uncertain.

Jackson Merle was exhausted. He was in need of money because his wife was in hospital. He had been knocking on door after door, looking for work, but no one would even listen to what he had to say. No one wanted to talk to an old man. He stood in front of the biggest house on the block. This was his last chance for the day. Every homeowner on the street had run Jackson off, without even listening to his proposal, and maybe this one would be different Jackson rang the doorbell. Within minutes a pretty young woman opened the door.
“Good morning,” she said cheerfully, “What can I do for you ” Jackson was heartened by her sunny smile and friendly attitude. “Good morning, Miss,” he said, “I’m a handyman, and I’m here to offer you and your family my services.” “What kind of work do you do ” she asked.
“I do anything you might need, Miss,” Jackson said, “I do some woodwork, painting, cabinet making; I fix small appliances, some gardening, anything you need and my rates are very reasonable.” “Come on in,” the woman smiled, “I have a table with a wobbly (摇摆的) leg that needs fixing, and maybe you can paint my guest room ” Jackson couldn’t believe his ears. He walked into the woman’s beautiful house, toolbox in hand.
First, he fixed the table, while the woman—who introduced herself as Ruth—sat watching him work and chatting to him. Then he looked at the guest room. Ruth gave him money to buy paint so he could fix it up the next day. She also paid him twice what he’d asked for the table. “But, Miss,” Jackson protested, “You’ve given me too much money!” “No, I haven’t, Jackson.” Ruth told him firmly, “My daddy always told me to pay a fair price for a job well done, and that’s what I’m doing!”
Over the next few weeks, Ruth’s neighbor Jolene was surprised to see the elderly man coming in and out of Ruth’s house with his toolbox in hand. Everything in Ruth’s home looking perfect, Jolene didn’t see why she needed a handyman five days a week.

Jackson’s wife was ill, and their insurance couldn’t cover all her hospital costs. Jackson barely had enough to live, which was why he needed to work. Jolene understood it and praised her for what she had done. Then he asked why Ruth didn’t give him the money. Ruth said she’d rather give him work so he could earn the money and keep his self-respect.

短语为graduate from。故填from。
故填a。
故填However。
故填that。

Jackson Merle was exhausted. He was in need of money because his wife was in hospital. He had been knocking on door after door, looking for work, but no one would even listen to what he had to say. No one wanted to talk to an old man. He stood in front of the biggest house on the block. This was his last chance for the day. Every homeowner on the street had run Jackson off, without even listening to his proposal, and maybe this one
would be different Jackson rang the doorbell.
“I do anything you might need, Miss,” Jackson said, “I do some woodwork, painting, cabinet making; I fix small appliances, some gardening, anything you need and my rates are very reasonable.” “Come
on in,” the woman smiled, “I have a table with a wobbly (摇摆的) leg that needs fixing, and maybe you can paint my guest room ” Jackson couldn’t believe his ears.
“But, Miss,” Jackson protested, “You’ve given me too much money!” “No, I
haven’t, Jackson.” Ruth told him firmly, “My daddy always told me to pay a fair price for a job well done, and that’s what I’m doing!”
Over the next few weeks, Ruth’s neighbor Jolene was surprised to see the elderly man coming in and out of Ruth’s house with his toolbox in hand. Everything in Ruth’s home looking perfect, Jolene didn’t see why she needed a handyman five days a week.
Ruth smiled and explained she was actually helping Jackson.

Jolene was moved by Ruth’s kindness and thoughtfulness and spread her deeds.

Ruth smiled and explained she was actually helping Jackson. Jackson needed the work and money badly. He wasn’t asking for charity, but for good honest work.

Jolene was moved by Ruth’s kindness and thoughtfulness and spread her deeds. The next day Jolene asked Jackson if he had time to fix up his old garage. Jackson agreed and fixed the garage. Such a good job did he do that soon the entire neighborhood had him work. Jackson became the local handyman and earned enough to make ends meet. Even after his wife recovered from her illness, Jackson carried on working for Ruth and his other customers. Thanks to Ruth’s kindness, Jackson got the opportunity to earn his money with dignity.
